This is microscope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program money during blocks and make a nonprofit organization in the Kelso Longview area called neighbors in need is doing great work. Would like to welcome Rick Perry she's the president and publisher of the daily news in Longview and spokesperson for neighbors in need to Mexico pirate. I hurry Gary I'm doing fine W. I'm fine thank you for having me excellent so neighbors in need what is neighbors in need. Neighbors in need. Is he charity to benefit local folks in the greater tell at this county area. And helped defeat them during this difficult time. And holidays when some folks just don't have a nasty heat up. And I'll you know this. They read any news found it about over twenty years ago about 24 years ago by their daily news and some of the employees here. And neighbors in need. Really is the day daily news well it seems to take some credit for the credit really goes to the readers because. Its readers of the daily news you know the general community. Who give the money. Two neighbors in need it gets dispersed a local church. And being that long view is a pretty small community a pretty tight knit community it's probably over a really. Wonderful thing that happens. It is so wonderful seeing you wouldn't think that a small community like pellets county in Longview would. Generate a lot of dollars but each year we generate forty to 50000 dollars we had some years upwards of 60000 dollars. You know over the course of the last 24 years has generated over a million dollars that has gone all back directly to the community. That is extremely significant that's fantastic. Intact and it really is a wonderful thing and well we view it is when someone gives scary. The view that they give the hundred dollars. And they ended a little coupon. To with the check. And they get to write little message in we published that message. In print and online and on mobile that's says. You know thank you for giving this a hundred dollars neighbors in need in honor of my. Grandmother and they give the grandmother's name for example. Who passed away. And so it really is sort of and time to think about loved ones they're closed space contribute and I also do something great for the community. How does somebody make a donation to neighbors in need. Very simple they can send it to Jack had to sit this for example there you go 77011. Avenue. Longview Washington 98632. X made out to end the high end or neighbors in need for any amount. And the daily news our commitment to this. It's obviously spend. Time money and effort to promote it. And to do every year to manages it is 501. C three or registered with the state of Washington has a nonprofit. And we complete all of a nonprofit paperwork tax work. Do all the transactional management. Of the dollars and distribute checks. Until they're beneficiaries. Being the Salvation Army in the saint Vincent DePaul here locally. And we do all that federal costs so if you give a dollar scary that pulled dollar. We'll go to the charity. So that's great great to no good news. What kind of neat are you seeing out there and at this time. Ten needed always significant. And it only seems to be growing. And and we've had some positive outlook and then in an economic community of lake. Folks are talking about how they're doing better. In terms of sales this seems to be few more jobs out there but there's still a lot of people who don't have enough Flutie can't. And so. They this charities that we we sponsor or we donate through to your neighbors in need. Saint Vincent DePaul and the Salvation Army continue to see five to 10% increases. A year in and year out with a number of families that their look and see. Hilly economy is turning around but it does take call it a while for that to affect everyone. It does it does then. It's simple as that may sound you need to eat every day. Since so. It's it's a challenge that these organizations. That affected Gary they do a wonderful job. In qualifying folks so they're not just how they're handing out food they qualified families this team. What the makeup of the Stanley is how many kids they have put their ages are what the appropriate. Amount and types of food are so that they're getting nutrition. And it's they're getting help and then they're just not handing stuff out. That in the end truly might not. He defaming the way they need to be said. So it's it's. It's some great programs that they do. Now who receives the donated money. If things than the ball and Salvation Army and we we write and the checked every week as the donations coming in. And regal cinemas. In partnership with the daily news is is putting on a night where everybody who. Who died. Popcorn. Soda pop they're yeah and other food items that money will go to neighbors in need. And what will do is once that's done all right checks do. One saint Vincent DePaul on 12. This Salvation Army and then they will use that money directly to us to either buy food. Or how to pay further things to go directly to these strokes in need to. So when is the benefit with regal cinemas that's a great question Jerry I think it's January 12 and okay and it say it's that do you have some new regal cinemas up there. They do they do in the community is really excited about it. There's been two different. Peterson's Peter locations in town three years. And now regal is opening up the new twelve screen at this Three Rivers small and can also which is right next to neighboring to Longview. And their communities are excited to go out and see the new Peters and go to the movies and and to be a part of this event that's. That's helping local folks as well. How did you say you said neighbors and he got started because of the daily news is that correct. Still it is it is some. Employees of the daily news got together. And decided that they wanted to try and put together. An organization. Or project torrent effort. They would help local folks. And there're a lot of different types of charities out there is you know. But now many did just focus a 100% of the dollars and all local. And and towards feeding folks through the holiday season and throughout the year and so. This team of people at the daily news did a great joke putting together something that blasted something in the last over twenty years is pretty darn good. Color your doodles I am all for over five years now. I've been the president publisher of the daily news for a little over five years and and just privileged and honored it's one of those things scary where you're lucky to be a part of that. And and I really no less. His neighbors and these are yours as volunteers. We are not looking for volunteers we're looking for the volunteers money. Source. We don't do the actual work I a saint Vincent DePaul in this Salvation Army do the actual work and I betcha they are always looking for volunteers. I've been down to the saint into the ball on many occasions. Casino volunteers it's a 100% volunteer run organization there's no one's. Individual who draws any okay. And it's so organizations like that really need of volunteers. Carrying and I can't speak for them but you know like time gallon Eritrean sorting potatoes. And do you know to moving food products around. Managing the warehoused. And it's just a wonderful place scary you would love it is just clean and neat and beautiful enlighten bright and the folks get to commend their in shop around for their food just like they're commercial restore. So is another that is handed to food Barkley here make something out of this they can actually do some shopping. That's strike they get a pick what they want and like. Alluded to before. They are given based on their family make out. Sort of require not a requirement but a list of things. Bid. To shop from a realistic categories to shop from drive better way to put it and so they go and they get meat and potatoes and and all your food groups so this so to speak you know fresh vegetables and what have you. And then they're told how much of all that they can have so the food doesn't go away so it's it's so wonderful. Wonderfully managed program as well as just being a great program in general. That's who they are really Smart way to do things because not only are you giving people stuff that they're gonna use but they're also getting to choose who. What they've what they want to eat. And it isn't some dignity as well. Well it does it does Spain they walk through it. We shopping carts and ticket type to cereal they want and you know with the food being so hard to get ten. So expensive. It's you don't want any of it could go to waste I'd hate to give via a boxer cocoa processing don't want them. Right down to the sound simple. And so they make sure that the folks are at least getting things that hopefully they'll leave and who use them won't benefit them and helped them. On the way to give moving towards being self sustaining. And no more productive member of society. This is all hoping local people all local that's that's their requirement the money comes from local people. Readers of their daily news local citizens. It comes to go local newspaper route then distributed locally. Two local charities to feed local folks and all these charities both the charities know. That that's our requirement that we're looking to take care of the people and tell accounting. How many people. Are you talking about that are in need. Full. Hey you know it always very that they give you some some round numbers. You know 700 did 12100 family. You know months for example just that this saint Vincent DePaul. So you know that's Stanley so that's you know 345. People in the family so it's it's thousands of people every month. You know cross ceased to charity. And as far as the Salvation Army goes is aliens does food come from their to a what do they do what sort of services the Salvation Army provide. Well only at the army provides all sorts of services. Quoting people. Helping them find jobs. Helping them to get there are better. Not just their Stanley says that they're they're lies could to get back put back together in general they also run a Christmas senator. During the holidays were families can can manage shop for gifts. And pick out brand new give us. And winter coats and things like that to get to their family. So the army obviously is huge organization across the world that does great things and and those great things locally here as well. They Mineta for awhile there David Harris they edit pearl on the in the as. You know the local board here does a great job. And so into it. All in all it he really couldn't ask for much more than what these two organizations do. So here are the brand new start of of the brand New Year's 2015. Sort of what your goals for this year had. Hard goal for neighbors in need is always to do a little bit better than the prior year and usually that puts us somewhere in the 50000 dollar range is what we're trying to. Trying to generate or or get to community to generate. Lee Enterprises which owns the newspaper here. Over the last several years including this year. Always starts the fund with a check for 5000 dollars. So we want to make sure their but he knows that we're in it which you and and putting our money where our mouth is so to speak it. So we. We would love to do. Anything over 50000 dollars the reality is this some years people seem to give more and some they give less. And has been at the end of the day this is a significant amount of money for it these organizations to work on budgets that are extremely well. So you know giving in or you know splitting up forty or 50000 dollars. Between these two organizations has just this huge significant. Effect on. Well how they can operate and how many families they can help teach you. How can people donate to neighbors in need what's the best way to do that. The best way to do it if if you're a local person. You can pick up. Copy of the paper and there's a little component there and neighbors in need to bond that we print. And they can ferret out and still relevant and they can put a little messages says. You know this is for my grandmother reform mind. Brother sister father or mother in memory or they don't have to give a message if they don't want to an attached jacket either dropped it in the mail. There's 77011. Avenue and long view the loss of 96 street to order up by the daily news secure her around town. Give other fund raising events throughout the year. Her neighbors in need we don't. We do fundraising events and fund raising a variety of things. Depending on big community needs him what's going on to try and help folks. Throughout the years we do that whether peace through writing new stories. Contributing money. We do a lot of things locally. I'm supporting the local schools. Where we work with our readers and write about this this they need that this school has. You know we it'd pose a two years ago Gary we had a local high school that it would shut that had no wood and so it's hard to teach to kids would show up when you don't have any award that's a little so. We work with our readers to help to get them not just good bits of apple would they needed. So we do a whole variety of things all throughout the year. We need to rise. That is great for you guys the newspaper to reach out to your community and and get support you have people rally around that's wonderful. Well I think we'll in their community. Bigger small. Will play some part in trying to help. Whether it's regal cinemas two opens up there and an inception date decide where they could be selling tickets and making money and you know selling food and drink and giving them money to local charity I mean everybody plays a part and it's just amazing. How giving people are it's seems like the higher the unemployment rate goes and the more difficult things seem to be the more money people yes. Little things. If it is it's just amazing. I don't know exactly why don't people. Over the last six years as we've experienced. Significant economic downturn. List super high unemployment rates. It's amazing just the absolute. Amount of money people. Has given in you know in the past years we've even been faced with people saying hey we want you to. You know I'll give you 25000. If you can get 25000. Dollars of matching or all match every dollar of tax dollar amount. It's it's just nothing short of breathtaking in it really sets you back. In knowing and understanding maybe what's more important in the life of other things. And during the economic downturn I think people could start to relate to what it's like to be without because that. And too many people didn't have any idea that there were going to be in that sort of situation. And in reaching out helping others that sets that's such a wonderful thing. Yeah also I think it's. He and Gary people feel like they just wanted to do something that they don't know what to do. Yes you know how to weigh help hide away I don't I do something and then they realize hey you know one I've got an extra fifty bucks. Or maybe don't have an extra fifty butterfly. This Friday do this better the other and and can squeeze my budget a little bit may be making I can afford that fifteen and some one else can have a meal for their Stanley. And though the economy is turning around let's all remember how good it feels to to give a little bit more. There you don't step up. You go well hopefully now from people who didn't have a job before have a job now. And and maybe they're getting that. Consistent paycheck we'll have. An extra fifty bucks they give. Could tell us a little bit more about the regal cinemas benefit. The regal cinemas benefit. Is is going to be on January 12. Then on the twelve they will be showing. Some movies that have been around and in circulation but at a branding failure to brand new location. It's really going to be exciting and fun event and if you go and you buy a soda or by some popcorn. All that money is going to be donated back to. Neighbors in need on the twelfth. And so you know if there's a great chance negated just don't enjoy yourself right and watch a movie and you know our good movie on a brand new screen and a brand new leader. And enjoy yourself new bit thing at the same time so and sounds to me like it's two win win situation. And movies or to reduce prices wells the correct. You know I believe so this is says urine from me in the movies or three books that make three back so I mean how cool is that. Yeah went to what what can you get for three bucks any such Erica but the well not a whole lot that I mean you can't even get a lot tape for three dollars. And some of our intercom radio stations are going to be there 92 point three kgo and 105 on the bus and then 95 the wolf they're all going to be there and support. Of those neighbors in need of the regal cinemas have three rules mauling Kelso how much fun event. Denigrate I think it's going to be a real a really great thing to regular great way of tick tick off the year and raise some recent good money for neighbors in need well and we appreciate it I'll look forward to seeing everybody there.
