This is microscope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program funding to carry flotsam and this time on the show we have an interesting one for you. We'll be talking about the healing powers of reiki and I welcome special correspondent Dave Scott from kgo in. Well thank you Gary this morning it's kind of an interesting topic we're gonna veer off into an area that may be hasn't been covered all that much but it's. And it's an important topic and it's of a topic though I think. Needs to have a little light shed on it we're joined by a Colleen Mannelly Colleen is a senior professional licensed reiki master teacher for the international. Center for reiki training. She is a contributing author for Ricky newsmagazine since 2005. And it is also an associate teacher for the lights on school of Chamonix studies. Susan p.s Bennett's is a licensed clinical social worker here in Portland Oregon. She's the author of the book the trauma tool kit healing posttraumatic stress disorder from the inside out. And as she too is a certified reiki practitioner and offers integrated Ricky therapy in treating PT EST and other related disorders good morning to you both good morning good morning good to have you here. Thank you for having us so reiki. RE IK hi it's it's maybe something that's our listeners have heard of but in cases not. Calling one to start by setting the stage into giving us a little background and a general feel for the F. The whole idea of reaching. Okay. We'll break he is a Japanese natural style appealing it promotes stress reduction and promotes healing. It was discovered in the 1920s by a man named peace who resent say through zen Buddhist practices. And it has become the healing practice here in the United States and literally all over the world's. Even in kind of random places that you wouldn't expect it to be. But it it is also being very well recognized by the way medical community and I was so I complementary therapy. That does help with stress reduction and that also helps win. I healing and to promoting healing. Is it similar to acupuncture does its affect the same areas the same pressure points is acupuncture well it's different than acupuncture it's administered by laying on hands so it's a a touch therapy. And it's similar to acupuncture in the sense that they both. Have work with the energy system of the body. But it is administered to certainly differently. It also has some ancient roots to it like acupuncture. And I would think that they would both fall under the category of energy medicines. So far I'm first time Ricky client. And I and I come to see either view to what what would expect to Lyon tables putt from a size and. Knew Diana as a massage table are fully clothed. Typically it's very comfortable and my sessions that say it's a very comfortable table where a plot to pillows and blankets and people drift off to sleep again at the technique itself has administered. Through hands on so there are certain hand positions that we use. For instance maybe our hands are placed over the years over the IA news. Over the throat media hand on the heart and hand on the app demand the knees the feet etc. And those sessions typically last about an hour. And the a client well often go into a very very deep state of relaxation. Sometimes they'll fall asleep at other times they go into a place we called avoid. Where there is set they're not really asleep and I'm not really awake but there's not a lot of thought either. Similar to being at the time. I haven't been hypnotized and you have to be able to describe it not only material. I think that's a little bit different because I think it's of a very deep relaxation state but there's not really any suggestions. Placed with that with kept it as there would be with hypnosis. And again I'm not very well versed in hypnosis to be able to speak to that. So Susan is also reiki practitioner from just what exactly is happening when reiki is administered that. Affects the other the ailment that these claims is coming to see before. While since my specialty is PT esteemed group of what I found is that a lot of common problems of people with PT SD have to do with not being grounded are fully embodied in their bodies. And this has been written about. Actually quite a bit lately especially in the last two years. Hustled and a Coke is one of the leading minds in PT SD and who's a psychiatrist. At Boston University has written about this kind of that. So on they're using a lot of their peace were coming grounding such as yoga and other things but when they found is that re Kean by working around people's feet. Really starts to open up their feet and re connect some. To the experience of being embodied. Which is really the only place so we can heal from because who were really not feeling ourselves and our body we can't we feel our feelings. And what's going on and to accept take steps to protect ourselves sports and move forward in our turning. Would you say the money is. Entirely capable to heal itself when given a chance. I would say that there are a lot of therapists out in the community tourists saying that you have to live with PT EST your whole life. And that's just because they don't know better. At Colleen mentioned the energy nature of this healing and in my book when he talked about is in the yelled a model we have five bodies. And come to some this mind body layers Richard there's two of those as a physical bodies there to this also this energy body layer. Which is well known to indigenous cultures and to the east. But in Northern Europe week recent loss of forgot that was dumb. And so does C staircase coming back like creaky that really address the problems in the energetic system on the body and I found regime to be very very powerful set up. So we calling your reiki master yes explain that. Well reiki is of course aimed at training that you go through and a break he class would consist of techniques that you learn but also reach he has actually passed on from one person to the other. Through a system called a tournament. And that tournament has been handed down from these dark he's sillier you silly sense say. In the 1920s. Through the current time. And it is tied to the class a search high as a reiki one would be beginning class freaky to would be the next level. Then there's an advanced reiki training and Avery can master class. And so a person. Goes through the training after wreaking master level. When you reach the reiki master level. Through the series of the atonement to actually are expanding your own energetic body. To enable the actual energy of freaky to flow through you so that you can pass on freaky to others. Signed both a reiki practitioner and iriki teacher. So I can offer wreaking sessions I can also offer wreaking classes and reiki training and administered via two months. So that the person that I give it to meant to. Is also able to. Practice reiki and have the energy itself flew through them. So this is something that's if I want to I could be a reiki practitioner absolutely in in a short of well I don't know short amount of time but not to. The very extensive length of time. It is one of the most amazing qualities of freaky is that it's very easy to learn. It doesn't require any particular belief system others. Although many people approach it as a spiritual practice as well as I healing practice. And there's no religion are required belief system around it. So people can take a reiki class and literally be given the attainment and be able to work with three key immediately. And the classes like a Rickie one classes a one day freaky too is the next state typically. And then that air teen master. Class is a three day class that's taken. Maybe six months to a year after the initial training for her people get used to it aired T advanced advance street retraining. Licenses required to learn to practice no because freaky doesn't cause harm and has so has no ability to cause harm that there is nothing I disagree. Can you explain that something that but. Then in Jersey you enter your system. Is beneficial but does not cause harm what is happening there. Well. That goes into kind of understanding what the energy itself is and the description of energy. Would have a lot of different descriptions based on a person's belief system. So what we do know is that the energy exists just like we have an energy body and we might call that out our life force them. Someone in science my column bio field. A person that has a spiritual background might call that spirit. In Chinese it's called she and and. I wondered if it was a related to achieve it is and in meditation I'm very very familiar with that the chi. The life forms so yes. It's the life force so that same life force exists outside of us. In my own personal perception of that I consider it to be a divine life force energy. Ray and key. Can be described as. Spiritually guided life force energy or universally. Guided life force energy depending again on a person's viewpoint. Break he works regardless of our viewpoint so it's a matter what we like to call written and how we like to perceive it. But the energy itself going back to the question of why it doesn't cause harm the energy itself has a particular consciousness of healing. And so it will only heal and as a person who is administering it. They have received attendance and that has to amend. Means that that person has been directly linked to the source or the energy of three key. And that when they administer reiki reiki is what flows through them. And the energy of three key just simply. It can't be. Haven't changed into something different we can't use our will our intention to make it be something that it's not. And it's only intention is to assist us in healing. So there is such a thing as a win win. Good only and I read this would be over in wind and yes Susan tell me how you and what's your experience was incorporating something like breaking into. You are practices a social worker. Yes well traditionally therapists come don't touch their clients come. But it was getting a lot of in their prompt saying if and prompting for my clients that they wanted some more sort of energy work they were they felt that I had healing. Ability to offer without weighing. So I was I was sort of casting around for some kind of modality I could do without violating my license. And I came upon making. Because you don't actually need to touch anybody to do making. There was no law against therapist touching their clients. But there is I'm a code of ethics that I it here too as a social worker. And there is spent a lot of problems with inappropriate touching and therapy. So most therapists are quite cautious about that and if it happens it's documented. So this way is if somebody really wants me to touch their feet for example in nineteen get a commission found them to do that. But it's not necessary reiki can get offered to the energy fields of somebody whether I'm actually had my hands on their body or not. You give me if you can an example of of a scenario where you saw a direct advantage. After using Ricky we're patient walked on what while I feel better yeah I've had some really powerful case studies happened in the last year. Because they just coming for a streaky attendant with Colleen here actually last April. So. Yeah one of my early clients. I been working with for a little while and I offered this to her and she was very eager to try it. She had been hand being very classic PT EST symptoms she was having problems her digestive system. She wasn't sleet being she hadn't really had a good night's sleep than three or four years. She was on dairy non functional in her daily life. And after the very first session. I got this email from her and a subsequent meeting that talked about this dairy dramatic. Response she had where she slept through the night for the first time I am. And I hung my name her digests a systems started working normal marine she started feeling a lighter mood and com was playful. For the first time in several months. So. And we've kept going with at and she just keeps getting fatter and fatter and I I've had several people sense and whose caddie is somewhat traumatic. Symptom reduction. Results capture even a single Ricci sash and I'm also and also what they see is this it symptom reduction is they just start feeling more hopeful they start. Feeling connected to their inner spirit. Or to a sense of the divine. And it just helps give them that sort of extra energy inches they need to push through into their healing. Com and can't. When people are suffering that much she really can't underestimate the value of that kind of hope and. I know that I invited you both here because I'm a firm believer in reiki and have been for number Beers in the thing. That it does for me personally is that really helps bring me back into the moment who helps me focus and be in the moment without my mind shooting here in there and everywhere. Colleen is that it is that they are common thing to hear from your clients. Absolutely and in my clients and to myself as I told you my mother is in the hospital this morning and and I had quite a morning before I arrived here and was able to really stay focused with her. Stay focused with what needed to happen stay focused with myself. And my mind didn't go all different directions and I was able to. Stay in an un stressed state. What I really see because streaky you know I've I've certainly had miracles happen. With reiki in and the work that I've done. But in addition to that as Susan was saying it really works with the symptoms. In the here in Portland we have the north west creek association. That has bridged the medical community with the reiki community and the week we threw it a system of volunteers. We operate key in five different compass oncology clinics. We also have a re cue program at the Providence. Physical therapy department. That in the house of physical therapy department. And what we've found by doing the intake form before. Before a person is receiving their chemotherapy and end in that setting they can be receiving chemotherapy in the reiki. Practitioner gives them reiki so they do an intake form in advance and ask the question. From any from one to ten of where's your stress and one to ten where's your pain. In 2013. They compiled all of those intake forms and found that there was a 93%. Reduction in stress in the cancer patients. And an 81%. Reduction in pain. And we're seeing this across the board in medical situations. And again also. In the what I I might call a spiritual injury or a traumatic wounds as Susan said often pot times. People do what's called to associate through traumatic experiences. And that is what Greinke does is it tends to. To bring up the vitality. Of their life force. And in that vitality. You know they're they're able to manage and able to reduce that stress and able to look into. You know. The beautiful world that's around them and focus on that more. Once again lady comes down to the the notion that the body can heal itself if it has everything it needs to maintain. Yeah given a chance given given the tools we. So my question is why his western medicine so hesitant. To open up to the other concepts that eastern techniques of acupuncture even now it's just beginning to be looked at seriously by insurance companies and and the like yeah why is that bias there and how long before I start to open the something like reiki. New I didn't actually thinking a lot about the status I'm reading another book about connecting to our indigenous gets an ancestor me. No other cultures so northern Europeans were really. Only culture in the world that kills offs ten generations of healers. During the inquisition and the burning times. And there are unbroken lineage is such healers in China and India. And any must hunt and other places. But come. But I believe that only did that it led in some ways I think to the rise of industrial civilization. And science and medical thinking. Which is not about thing I'm married to a cardiologist and not a science and I air. Com but we lost something too and I think what's happening now were just starting to seeking some of not act we have a lot of teachers here. In the last now that have woken up to this folds with stem path in coming public has something well and it. Also what I'm seeing is that western medicine is really starting to recognize the value of these programs and complementary therapies. And certainly reiki is becoming very mainstream and medicine. If you read any of the major illness web sites such as the American Lung Association or the MS web site or mesothelioma. They have to have information on three key as a complementary therapy. And in 2007 so really long time ago there were well over 800 hospitals in the United States that offer creaky. And so what you see is that the hospitals are now starting to open what we call either integrative medicine programs. Mind body programs. And then and so reiki typically falls into one of those categories. Occasionally like the hospital out in the Dallas. They have their re cue program in the spiritual care department. So in that department it offers more spiritual support. In the other departments such as that of Providence. Physical therapy department. They're offering more medical support are complementary support. The Providence child center for medically fragile children also has iriki program for these children. And it's been so incredibly successful. That they actually promote. There reiki program to other childcare centers in the United States. I also like to add that Tom and only training in the Harvard medical system and the current medical system has been on board with alternative therapies for decades I was there in 1991 and and was asked to sit on the first ever complementary therapies committee. With David Eisenberg who was the man the Doctor Who went out to make this big study showing how much money people were spinning out of pocket. For these alternative therapies. In the billions of dollars in there there's still a lot of people don't understand how integrated medical care. Is in the us hospitals and they even have fellowships. On an internships for doctors and complementary. Therapies that certain hospitals are. So I'm maybe on the wrong track tonight I've always felt there was kind of a bias in western medicine that. Well I have I'm in my particular. Training I'm able to offer continuing education units to nurses social workers family. It's spamming counselors. But as that term. Cameron parish can you know she anyway no I'm just. Is so. So. What we're seeing is a lot of health care professionals really are stepping into some of these complementary therapies. And not only for their patients but also for themselves because they're at their job and their work is so incredibly stressful. That we see it also from caregivers. So is there any is there an ideal case study for someone who's never tried Ricky before that maybe would benefit by coming to see. The type of person are there a certain attitudes or states of mind which would be better than others to come in differs reiki. Session with. I have probably every kind of person profession and believe sis done religious background. For Greece. Sexual orientation and you know every everything I can think kind of I really haven't seen a particular. Type of person that is interest in and reiki I think. Across the board all of us are looking for something that can help us manage in this world it's us. It's kind of a stressful world out there sometimes. How do you how do you deal with the skeptics that are there because they've tried everything else but they still have a problem and well I guess I'll go check out this this reiki I don't know so how you're there one on one what what approach do you take to help them was in commemoration. Well hey. Earlier. This system I dangling little leverage but I don't know particularly a lot of my I think my family members feel like what is she doing. I can shows they they might humor mean. And allow me to give them a reiki session just be due to be kind can be family and and then afterwards there was a that worked really won't help things and I come back. Well well now my mind is spinning so works on humans doesn't work on other things animals plants. From everything because everything has a life force. So everything with a life force can also have their life force and power and strength and and you know that's what I find that they're reiki really works with so often through life experiences. Our life force gets diminished or depleted. It can be injured just like you know for instance. An example might be feeling as if you've been stabbed in the back. Well flat removes that actual injury and what can heal that actual injury so. I think that everybody. Has some type of the benefit. And some type of an injury is it that can happen including animals plants a Saturn. And I. Talked a lot about the guide dogs for the blind. Out and boring Oregon and they have three key programs for their dogs going through the training program because the training is so stressful and strained US. So reiki for animals is becoming quite a popular. Complementary therapy as well. Well this this has been fascinating and I can only hope that somewhere someone out there has had their interest peaked and mab has decided to investigate. Reiki as a possible solution to whatever it is that there encountering in their lives.
