This is microscope and intercom reveal Portland public affairs program under blocks and and the fourth of July is just around the corner. So that of course means that the Saint Paul rodeo is coming right up. I like to welcome sue Coleman she's the association member and volunteer with the Saint Paul rodeo enhance initial and holds. President and CEO of the Justin cowboy crisis fund welcome to microscope links. Thank you think you're exhibiting it started for the review this year. I this year do you we start out on June 30 let these professional or riding tour. And then make our right and you are rodeos July 1 through the forward. It's always been around the fourth of July is. Yes the hair every hair okay what can we expect this year the single rodeo. I'm wearing we -- it but got a great show it very family oriented as bad. Do we. I'm have also regulate them there and we. Be a lot of fun activities along the way we got a Great Britain after every show we kappa group fireworks. I would have to have a terrific at hurry that happens every year. We know big about to join us. This brings a lot of people to live relatively small town of Saint Paul is merit. We helped to put 50000 people live there. Our community. I each year and we are counting up the only 330 people. If you put the so that's quite quite a lot of folks come in an attempt. Yes we depend on our volunteers enough. I certainly am a volunteer with in our community has. That's led it's amazing that you know a mini camps and have the other products just a terrific shelf. How long is the same already human know and on it's it's one of the older ones around his net. The fully or sixtieth year. Are you marry eightieth year. Previous year while. And how long have you been involved in the same already. I then a member for well I. I grew up in Saint Paul and now I've been helping out the rodeo in my entire life. That's fantastic. Like to once again introduce Cindy some holds the president and CEO of the Justin cowboy crisis fund either Cindy how do you guys fit into these people rodeo. Well I got a call from Cindy lists from the rodeo one year and she said that. They do a lot of fund raising night there and a lot of special promotion and and her son competed in professional rodeo and she got acquainted with the testing cab I cracked front group. I'm her son and she wanted to make one of the night. I'm benefit suggesting Catholic crisis front loaded. Beyond the boot Knight was born and this year is Wednesday. July 1 and they give a dollar from every ticket for that performance. And they raise money and a lot of other different ways and that's what is she had that followed the program say they do a drawing for them. Bring our national finals ticket that there. Trail ride day. In that packed courtroom lawyer and what's if you haven't been there you have to partake in that it's here over 21. He's made. Has the celebrity bartender Ben collects a lot of hip and they don't they have a bit of adjusting capital cart farm itself. That's kind of how we got involved so I come up every year and visit with everybody there and then we have the whole night that basically dedicated test not only to just be terribly crisis and that the Japanese sports medicine program. Just all around to help cowboy and that's what they're about. So what is the just and cowboy crisis fund. There's nothing public crisis under the private C three nonprofit. That help in your rodeo athletes with they're living expenses. Not their medical bills but they're living expenses. So if they go to school rodeo and are injured. Traveling to a former rodeo or at the rodeo. They can apply for it's it's it is just a cowboy crisis but they have accident insurance through the professional rodeo cowboys association membership. But unlike. Professional football players and basketball player they don't get salary so that they have a torn ACL Laura. You know on the shoulder injury or something and they're out next month they don't have any income coming yeah it's so. 25 years ago John got in with Justin boots and you're shouldered great rodeo champion came up with the idea of let in backhand got injured rodeo athletes. And it's not really a matter of if they'll get injured it's win they'll get injured as Eric. No that's what they say in the sport of rodeo definitely has not come land but how bad. And most of the times thankfully come. They injuries you know they either have to rehab and he'll adapt or some third period that pat is saying that I am. That's where we work really closely with the Japanese sports medicine in school also beyond by app. Saint Paul and they'll have orthopedic dark and fort Madison trainers and it's important bars therapist then. You are a lot I think paid being any number of bangs and then if need speed they can you know get an optical worked with ambulance crew that I suspect. You know any statistics on injuries I would imagine there's got to be of 2 o'clock on an annual basis. Yet I don't know the exact number but I I can tell you that the most. Common injury would be to their head and face and birdie oh and that's about 60% of so injury. And then Beckett are knee injuries you can imagine the era where. Some of those and then that's followed closely by shoulder injuries right now I have my vote. Popular and everything to be rotator cup and that was a lot of I've era lawyers felt proper order and he broke was right now that are rehabbing from rotator cuff surgery. And obviously. The bull riders are gonna veto while back. Have about 49 point 77%. Of the total injuries. And then second place would be 20% or bare back crackers that. Better than a lot as. Repetitive. Injuries were with their upgrading elbows shoulder that type thing. How many injured rodeo athletes has the you've just until we crisis fund helped out. Well we just this affects my pick here any distance. We were incorporated in December of 1990. And we just. They're past seven million dollars in total it's it's it's just that month so that there is a pretty big milestone for us. And world we're working on almost 11100 injured Dario athlete that we help. And this is throughout the United States. Right. And and we've had some from Canada. Apply help well them so. Professional rodeo athletes do is what is the do we help and they don't necessarily have to be members of the RCA. If they were injured to a farm going to learn from or at an event artifact that's. Through their participation in professional rodeo they can apply and our board make all those decisions based on how long they've been in the works. What percentage of their income comes from rodeo on a number of different things we have a very active board of directors that my father. There's so many rodeos that happened throughout some real well mostly year of the year especially during the summertime throughout the United States how do you have that many people there to help all of these these cowboys. Well we are headquartered out of professional rodeo cowboys association not one unique thing about the debt and capital practice on that Justin but it pays. A 100% of the administrative costs. So if you give ten dollars for the death in traveler card and all that money goes directly in response to helping injured verio athlete. And I'm wildwood got import medicine he can't be at every rodeo. There act about a 145 rodeos and they also have. They work with. Or the Viet dock that might be at some of these other rodeo and then there's ambulance crew than that but I think it aren't already. And all of our membership understands that there in a position that they're gonna be out probably more than two months or something like that. They called here the opposite talk to me and I will get them an application and we worked through the process. Forgetting them that's then. I'm a lot of them are you know trouble is very proud and sometimes they don't you know apply on their first injury. And the neat thing has a lot of them paid the money back we had. And then apart bull rider who played. 10% of the earnings for the next year so the crisis firm then he made it to the national finals rodeo in. Just his earnings at the national finals Mario he paid back 5000. And then we had a world champions era where that was injured. And we helped him a couple of times. And he and his family put on our what they called against my party. Can't brown party in Bridgeport Nebraska. And they all came together lock step final round of the national final birdie on the late 30000 dollars to get money back for the so. Its the rodeo industry helping the rodeo industry helping each other and and it's it's pretty great fun to be involved with the. Yeah pretty great guy isn't there. Absolutely our our sport of rodeo has the best people. I'd put him up against any other group of people in any other sport they're really very caring we take care of each other. It's one big family. Where does the Dustin Keller Chris is funded your funding where does that come from. It comes from our fundraisers all over you know what when we're talking about. I'm Saint Paul there's a number of other different rodeo the alternative temple Fedora again. Well our largest party committee donation comes from San Antonio they've been putting on our. Golf tournament down San Antonio and they're very 35000 or so I'm Saint Paul raised in excess of 101000 every year. We have a luncheon that we put on any conduct but the Wrangler national finals thirty others them. Lady that get together and do that and they've raised one point four million in the history of the fund so. We we have these fundraisers all over the country. And a lot of rodeo they do it and then there's a lot of memorial donations people within the sport of rodeo. When a family member after the way they designate the fund as from memorial in and we do. Hit a lot of fun that way. Divert your family wants to get back here and leave a legacy. And we do have authors then. Don't like that we put on file auctions them. You know it's it's never ending but it it's great he and if you have a lot of foundations that give they really like get to the the unless they are met a lot of money is going to go towards administrative. You know it sounds like a pretty awesome deal. If it is a great yellen. Can't say enough about Justin bit and what they have done to him. Make the careers are ready our athletes longer are with these they're preventative medicine with the taping in the races and all these different things that they do. And they have a computer system the cowboys can go to the trailer is great hall. They'll bring up their record. And whoever are on duty there won't know. What they've you know been dealing with the past. That month or year or however long I've been in the system. So I'm Justin has definitely shown. A lot of there toward the rodeo athletes. Let's bring him to call again she's a volunteer for the Saint Paul rodeo. So what does it mean for your organization to don't have the Justin cowboy crisis fund they're on site and in supporting the in the cowboys. Well you know we went have a rodeo without these professional athletes and so does this just they've already owes so. Please that we can get back to these athletes. First date trying to show that they're putting on our. What kind of events are happening during the simple rodeo to raise money for them the a couple of crisis on. Well we're going to be having outer hull came. Barbeque. Auction but we're gonna auction off some items to raise the money. Four B I just think how they crisis I'd bet that. Then on our Arab and we hope we can all come out on July 1 floor are beyond the bit night and will contribute a dollar. For every ticket that's purchased bat I hit it doesn't Catholic crisis front. Can work and be able get tickets do you biking by Ayman advance certain keys give him at the door. I'm pleased vitamin advance that's the way to get your best seat and go to www. I already know dot com. And you can buy your tickets right online. What kind of events happen at the simple rodeo this year. We have para you know it's. I we have the barrel racing battle brought team roping bear bear back writing steer wrestling bull riding and tied down roping. So there all the traditional rodeo event that he'll be we also have some great entertainment. You know he's he's got the other bit of family at that. We have a grade I rodeo clown that we'll be there a special react. So it is that it is just as a desecrate two hour show so we help peaking come out. And this is one of the beer rodeos in the state of Oregon business. Paul and our little town of Saint Paul I love that he says how many. Well we hope we have we wanna fill every seat needs for garment called the at least 101000 people. So about 50000. 50000 people that we're gonna bring in our community. Then we're girl these people stay DF camps I think that's what practiced. Imagine cowboys can the sleeping wherever they can find a place. Well that's you know the great thing we're only 45 minutes from Portland Oregon you know but let the dust you can take nice drive down into the country. I'm can watch the performance and you can drive back home but we all they can. What neighboring communities of neighbor it would bird have played with this stay for the night. Gadhafi even say down a chance sweetheart so. I'm way off though. Nearly a tremendous. Parking abilities so there's lots of places to park. And it our whole community get the ball so. You know it's there's other organizations that are also hit right parking car then you can come and get some Arabic community barbecued chicken and there's just what does that other organization nonprofit organizations that benefit from Bolivia. He's from all your little. I will take all of us. We you know we always and it takes a lot and a lot of people in need and it's sometimes beyond it's beyond earth but at least I get a lot of people let. Even help me out. That are not a rodeo association members so if you do have an interest you know we have our. Are. The 800 number 80237. I nineties there help give us a call and let them know that you'd like to help out. Cindy what how important are the fund raisers like the ones happening during the same bull rodeo. For the just until the crisis on. They're they're dissident anyway we would be able to help the number of rodeo athletes we do with Al. Birdie at such as Saint Paul stepping up and and like he said knowing how important it is. To help the rodeo athletes and to give back stand during the fourth of July especially important. To have the justice for none of the team on site because it's what they call cowboy Christmas. And over that weekend or are there might go to and rodeo. So and it's by the middle of the season they've been brannan hard they are swayed but it does that in fort Madison trailer and and then if they do you have an unfortunate injuries and they cannot fight for the weekend. We can help them out but the birdie a committee vote will go off phone not only the professional rodeo cowboys association back. But I'll burger got in Albuquerque on. Toward the some of the people that help wildness in the medical with the medical teams. Where they come from our. Doctor candy Freeman is the medical director or. Just in sports medicine. Scene and he is out of Dallas Texas and he's got to travel to some rodeos. But a lot of cowboys will fly to Dallas to have sparked the three then work on them it's the kind of specialized. But they. Rates they bring in doctors they have a meeting form every year Eric I our national finals and they talk specifically about. Rodeo injuries and forget preventing birdie on your injuries and helmets and all different number of issues that. Sports medicine trainers and doctors that work at rodeos. Would be interested in so that the whole network across the country that he's very uplifting kind of depend on. And admire and almost all the rodeos have some sort of stopped here onsite bat that can help stop. Pepper cowboy is in need of some assistance one of the process of up how'd they do how they get the assistance they need. Again they can go to our web site Justin cowboy crisis fund dot org. And there's information on bear or they get caught PR CA office then Colorado for. Caught up so I'm either way and enough that the cavalry know. You know how to get it passed without setting and it it's kind of a long process arm like after our board of directors is is very. Active. We have Nolan Ryan. On the board of directors we have Charlie Daniels we have some celebrities but they're also. Vote on every case they've read every case. And yes I'm I'm like no one would understand sports injuries and that type so. Very active board spokesman Justin boots happened. People on our board. So we're constantly we have to face to face toward me every year but we're constantly deciding cases. Through email so we can get those. Kate sit down then and we've given out almost 200000 dollars already if she felt. Can you give us more examples of of how the just economic crisis fund has helped out rodeo athletes. Yeah there's any number of different ways that can happen but generally it's a monthly back and that's well. And that's giving want to qualify and bill they're they're the fight page application. And they must turn and a doctor's know where it comes to our office. And there will decide whether you know it they need according 500 dollar lump sum or. If they're going to be out six months they may need it right and every month and that the fans thought their family or just the single and you know it it. We have in the past we've helped. We're vocational. Training or someone that had a career ending injury we we've spent a couple of guys a collared. It has spinal injury that work to be able to ride again to help them get a second career we've outfitted with AM. Most of it is then. Monetary assistance to get them through until they can get back competing but I'm generally a good guy. That has maybe scored a fight that at the last birdie owners are going to be able to compete for six months or you're torn ACL and had to have surgery and so you know apply and if you qualify with all of our qualifications will send him a monthly check until they can get back on its feet to back birdie on board who work either. If he happens to have another professional. And this money doesn't help out with medical expenses right. No we when they started the fund that they they decided it would just be our. Living expenses that helped trigger Branson our car payment and auto insurance and all those expenses that we also. Just imagine not having a paycheck I'll with the and I 'cause we are affiliated. With official charity of the professional rodeo cowboys association and run out of their offense most of the folks that apply. Our professional rodeo cowboys association. Athletes and they you have an accident insurance policy through their membership. So there he. Oh a lot of their medical field will be covered that way and I'm quite a few of them probably than most of them anymore have a secondary thought they are so. So we're just helping with the living expenses. Tell us against about some of the fund raisers that are happening during the Saint Paul rodeo to help out the Christmas Fund. Yeah it then really aren't very succumbed to the radio every year we got a boost so people can get or formation about the arms. I'm that you have a current coming up where they will have a darn what he said yes. And then. They they just started doing an option that part of the proceeds they've been doing their box and that they have carte of them going to the Japanese public art fund and it's. Student gathering some really item and will help get an item for. And then if you go to the rodeo bitterly and you're when he want you to go into the cat bird stolen or not always a lot of arm. And our. They donate all the best for the Japanese Khaled crisis fund so that's been a significant amount of money there. And then again if you and the rodeo on Wednesday night. The first bat I hit a one dollar from everything it will benefit suggesting tablet are. That's pretty great. Preceded wonderful you see this is going to be some celebrity bartenders right. Yep I'm not certain parts of the and they added they never fails you're pulpit there gallery of folks that have a great time and then really Barack with a paper and and I'm aware that didn't quite he had kept from that from my room it's pretty amazing how just even tipping a couple of dollars can help out too every dollar helps. It it really isn't and when you gather all together whole community already a committee like they are. That hasn't really dedicated themselves to giving back into burial athletes. You can really make a difference then I think it was thirteen thousand last year I think we get my craft. Forty or 50000 from when they started doing so absolutely it's made it different than a lot of injured athlete in the family. Other some other ways that say you're trying to raise funds throughout the year without them being at federally. Absolutely. Again you can go to get public art fund dot org there's a lot of different ways. That Pendleton round up recently. Started their own credit card and you can apply and get your credit card with the panel can round up bucking horse logo. And they have designated half of all the fun. Raised by that project to go to the Jesse Kelly current is fun. We are also giving a way Polaris ranger at right where national final birdie oh we have information about that trying out our web site also so. There's and we had no information we have we all third certain other people that donate a portion of the proceeds of. All the things that are among the things that they sell. And the eagle on Amazon smile at Amazon.com if you go to their Amazon's mile you can designate the skeptic have a crisis are major charity. And it will automatically donates a portion of its sales that you. Have when you're shopping online it is just think now like I. That's for agreed. Aren't aren't so well words hope and everybody gets out of the rodeo this week kicks off sued do say kicks off on the for the thirtieth which is Tuesday. Okay he goes through that goes through the weekend. So that the foreign. And registered Marion all of it already has designated as a Wrangler million dollar chair rodeo which means we get about prize money. Approaching 500000 dollars so that means we really attract you know these top professional rodeo athletes to our rodeo you're gonna see some great. Great people competing. But these top the top prize money and and does have a great time and as I. I everytime I come yeah I get done you know what I'm ready we did you feel so good and it just warms your heart at such a great family of that. I mean and it's it's it's a very patriotic night as well each night is. So I'd please come on out.
