This is microscope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program I'm Gary blocks. On the show this time we wanna talk about how you can be more healthy. And prevent chronic diseases like diabetes I like to welcome tiller Simon associate manager with the American Diabetes Association. And read hi can build a certified culinary professional and certify in modern herbalist welcome to Mexico ladies. Are. Absolutely so today we wanna focus on what healthy eating and diabetes prevention and diabetes awareness weeks wanna focus on those things today so Taylor let's get started with few. Give us some kind of low broad overview of some diabetes basics there several types of diabetes is not. Got yeah that is correct though it there's ticket for diabetes we call them cheap one and shaped steel. I type one diabetes is. I made this order we are. Do you let. Are not prop thirteen or use dean in planet don't wave that Dirk body block and kill. And if need be how is Bibi has an autoimmune disease or couple of different factors that basically your body stopped pretty Kean and plan. And when I talk about in plan I want you to imagine. I had that insulin is sort of the key and that he would. They pinch yourself and unlock your spouse to be able to use that energy that you're getting from credit. So without into play and you're not able to use energy that you're eating. To meet your body run properly. So type one minute by DDQ one thing got more of an autoimmune disease. Type two diabetes is similar to a pipeline in that it's had this corridor where intranet not being abused her produced a effectively or efficiently. But they're the couple different reasons why it might be lifestyle it might be hereditary it may be genetic they've bought to different factors that we Eric. You have enough and plan and you're not able to use that. Or your body simply not making an out and plan and it pretty systematic and water site a backseat are not able to use energy that you're eating properly. How prevalent is babies in America. They media is in theory prevalent and Ameritech. And keeping I mean I'm more and more prevalent every year as well. I may currently almost thirty million children and adults in the United States have baby eating. And it close I think 86 million Americans have predate feeds which means that. They air. When dean and torrents. Developing diabetes studied don't quite meet the diagnostic criteria that they are trending away and these numbers are astronomical. And then one point seven million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes each year. Oh. Yeah I brought it a lot. It is a lot and you know we're working hard to make sure that these numbers go down on and you know all stayed at least stay consistent because record that is being mad at me and some players at first I'm painting candy turn and it. In his say with pre diabetes that's that's him area where you can prevented or at least maybe turn it around but there is a two point is that correct. You are being what I like to say is that we can slow it and diabetes is a progressive disease. But we can't slow their duty as we can slow the progression to the point where we may not even noticed any symptoms. Or how blood sugar levels that would indicate. I had been pre diabetic or how mean diabetes. And this is guy and true. Pretty simple app for secular lifestyle change becoming more active really keen attention to what's on your plate. And just generally living in a while life. And so it that's that's insisting that you we can kind of turn it around I think that's encouraging. It is it's very encouraging and an empowering that does things that we can do you want to you know slow the progression of diabetes docked at all. Opt out. You know it doesn't required doctors that that's we can do that on her own by keen attention to upper well how are treating her body and not that exciting. What are some recommendations of the American Diabetes Association has four for healthy eating. Yeah that's built for healthy eating we are extremely. Happy and focused on healthy eating. Actually I think next months to November is that American diabetes month and our team this year is eat well. And we're actually going to be telling reading our first ever national healthy lunch stay on November 17 two. And organs being carried eighteen America had to eat healthy and incorporate bombing Vinatieri daily life. To do what it looks like can I do for eating healthier tracking healthy lunch would be if you could all imagine eats sleeps and if you drive turn straight line down and then you wanna still want happier plea with non starchy vegetables. And then you wanna fill the other half you want a quarter at and put one quarter what I'm certain proteins. And the other quarter with some sort of great and then you wanna finish off a healthy meal let me get Serbian at theory and a Serbian fruit and then a lot of water. So you know this method of eating as it's pretty simple and it require cal I mean it doesn't require measurement is just. This lighting your plate that's still up or veggies I can green and protein and then you know make sure that your hydrate and. But explain to us what a non starchy veggies is. You have Corey their non starchy vegetables. I had her out all start with Turkey Daschle also disparaging about smoltz would be things like. And petite error. Bikini. Either take this squash. I had those vegetables tend to be higher in carbohydrates. Dinner other actionable. The nationals that are considered non receive actual but it beatings like. Broccoli. I spent just at them. Most every leafy greens and things like. The ones that duke is hard to get to give Steve right. So I'd like to once again Reid introduced read a high compelled the arena you're a certified culinary professionals I'm assuming you know a lot about food. Well yes. I would bet they're all these years then and it's interesting what Taylor with bank to about. The play and the side that the played in dividing it it that really does make it easier. For us to eat healthy but I think which he said too it's all a part of educating. Our children and it starts right at home don't you think that Taylor. Absolutely. So so we should be teaching our children that there immediately ranked. Yeah and and with good healthy habits and so I think it'll which when you told a how many people are. Pre diabetic I mean that just stunned me and I think dumped. It's just our way of life here with all the processes. What do you think it'd I can give you my opinion. But it when I go to the grocery store. Taylor Potts and Gary boy if I read labeled on a box Europe are out bottle and it's just. Hyped up because there are so carbohydrate content is so high or at. Not a natural type of sweetener in there it's just this sort of boggles my brain so I think I only say if you can't pronounce was on the label in May not be good for you. I think that's a good recommendation there. So many things on the label eleven what does that word. Yet death and I make a lot of my own vitamin waters here at home. And I teach when I teach my students to about drinks then. Taylor still pretty jumping here to. I like to start out with a good quality water and then used fruits and veggies and herbs. To make an infusion and make it really healthy and high trading. And so delicious that it makes you want to break it up not just have one small glass of water. That front lawn and or Shaw. They're read is that something you blend or is that something you. How do you make that. I listen you don't even have to blended. Really really easy what I do I'll give you I'll give you an example. I make something called my thought water and at some vitamin water and you know vitamin waters are all over the store I mean is shelves are full of those that. I really they you can make your own at home in less expensive first of all. And then you know exactly what goes into it so what I'll do what I make a couple different times but my most popular and easy for my student. Is what I call my Bob vitamin water and I'll start out with. A good quality water about a court because you don't wanna use water right out to cap elect it's filtered or you could certainly use distilled water. And then the reason of course we start with water we know that it hydrates are body and it also balances the fluid though even if you were just drinking playing quality water. Our bodies are about 60% water so. We need that water for not only part suggestion. But it also help our our blood circulates and it keeps the blood flowing well not only to all the parts of our bodies but especially to the heart and brain. So we need water when people ask me what my nose up favorite drink is IL he start with water. But a lot of times water especially for kids. They just don't wanna drink it you know there's no flavor their says chase so what I do without at a couple of thinly sliced lemon. And I usually buy organic but here's the pitch for those people who can't find your a four organic citrus. What you can do that you can take. Some clear vinegar in some water of one to one ratio like that cup of beach. And you can just posture lemons you're part skinned fruits into that water and squish him around for a little bit. And then take the mouth rinse drain and dry them and what that does that remove all the toxins on the outside of the season. And as you both know. Sometimes. The toxins are on the outside so that we like into something. Bacteria goes into that product so. Backing up but the dollar had a couple of just thinly like lemon. And M when you do make vitamin waters with fruit or veggies I really say. Right and then return them up multi get lots of surface area as that that infuses into the water better. And the reason I use lemon. Is of course telling us that they contain a lot of vitamin C we know that's good for our immune system. And about three people since a fresh lemon juice. Get this about 70% of what we need every day. And it is water soluble so we we can't store vitamin C and here's the thing about the lemon in this vitamin water. They. Help that burn are carved more efficiently. We know that Lemond also kept calcium and fiber. One of the most important thing about lemon waters though. Is that dilemma and the vitamin C axes genital liver cleanser and kidney cleanser. So we got that wonderful vitamin C in there and by the way I know vitamin C is that that. But it turns the lemon turns alkaline in your body says that's the good thing. And then what I'll do tailoring Darius. I grow a lot of curves of course and I'll just throw and a handful of fresh peppermint and there. And what that does that not only at five but it helped our suggestion. And what I'll do it after I get the lemon in the mid in the water out take wouldn't that is sort of push it down. And what that does it starts releasing the policy toward a tile oil in the peppermint and also puts the vitamin C into the water. And I'll tell you what. It's delicious summit. But when my kids have always liked the sweeter drink and now my grand kids of course due to. So what I'd like to add to sweeten. Its media. And Taylor I'm sure you're familiar with the media aren't you. Yes my hand gas and been very I'm I'm assuming you are as. Well certainly heard of it yes. Yeah we'll see the other let me tell you a little bit about CBS if I may I hit some time here. Yeah it's an herb and it though. And here in the midwest we called the tender perennials. It's a native of South America and you couldn't I grow the plant in this beautiful green plant. But it's the sugar substitute and it's unnatural shows sugar substitute. Though it non caloric and diabetic date which is why I love you that in my vitamin waters. And because it doesn't build bacteria up in the mouth like sugar does this really a lot healthier. And it actually hundreds of times sweeter than sugar. Have this devious that I've by I have I like you natural thing you can get it and powdered form or. Extract or liquid. It's easy it's so I can put a little bottle of my person and go out the door. But you only need if you drop the devious to sweeten the whole court of this vitamin water. And I'll tell you what it makes against K so good that you are gonna find yourself. Warning to stay hydrated. In warning to drink more water. Beckon me find Steve via unisource only you grow your own is that correct. Oh yeah I wrote the plan but I'll tell you the plant I used depression and infused believed but yet the media is. It all over the supermarket now. Up until a few years ago that you couldn't find it I don't think the FDA. Allowed it is that they sugar substitute but now you can find it in the doors. At that they sugar substitute. Yet bill there's maybe a packet and there are there's all kinds of names. Attributed to it but basically at that says he via. It's from that plant that not Corey diabetic state. And hundreds of times sweeter than people show there. There are so many low calorie sweeteners and artificial sweeteners and and now natural sweeteners. Taylor let me ask you what that what what does the American Diabetes Association think about these low calorie sweeteners. Yeah until leaping to their agreed option and I had to lower Guillen out action occurred. In one diet whether you how GDP diabetes or not I have periods eating healthy is incorporating. I and or nine car Brady too much occurring near by comedian that I could low in sugar and we do you recognize that there are. Lots of different product out on the market and and we actually have a list as. I won't back at DA approved and generally recognized that seeks. Sweeteners on our web site diabetes dot org but we think it's a great way to fuel I can eaten food and drinks that can help curb your craving for something to meet. Are there some do not natural sweeteners out there that maybe aren't good for him. Ironic. Dear. That's that's difficult for me and Kara and. Jury's still out on some of those. Is the jury's still out on some of those. Hi Gary you know there's there's three thirds been dying. Everyday I and the new product on the market and Ali is the new products you know I am the lead generally just go buy a land bank I have hard. ER approved as generally recognized as safe and FDA approved and I go without. So many Britain there's so many people out with diabetes that are completely unaware that they have diabetes is a correct. That it cracked and Molson most of those people would fit into the type two categories and also correct. Yeah I generally tight Q it is a little bit less than dramatic day in Cape Wind. So maybe you have until some of the symptoms of diabetes that we should be looking out for. Source so different portrait for both type one and trade today beating spent. If you do you have elevated checker libel and milk which means that you are trending toward diabetes something that you money. Noticed is that you are extremely thirstein. I had that you're going to that act you're frequently. I you might be extremely hungry. And noted that general find some books for. And when your sugar levels are Allenby at. Now what causes those and those symptoms. I'll watch the different things and not to get cute tactical but in a lot of that revolves around our kidneys and hormone office stem cell. I had deer that mechanism called our regional trashed all and when that threshold is reached I have been. Blood glucose or blood sugar levels that are you hiding these symptoms start to pretty. Increased urination and increased thirst hunger and talent. How do we know our blood sugar level. Until you can know your blood sugar level I did seeing your doctor or nurse and and asking for is blood glucose. Or visit that very important conversation that you should be having very frequently with your doctor every time either to feed. Your doctor or your care provider after four. ED screen or a blood glucose cash it's extremely simple to deal. They're gonna either prick your finger somewhere on your hand it takes just a couple second then results are media. Our most doctors are looking for those types of things now. Is it because doctors becoming more aware. Not you know what that's also something that we where did you that this city is we need to make everyone aware of including her doctorate. So while most doctors are clear and you know asking Gil we want to empower. The public and everyone to go to their doctors and advocates for their health which means asking to be screened for something like diabetes. And he said November is diabetes awareness month you and then there's lots of stuff going until some things happening for him for diabetes awareness month. Yeah how great hill they mean can that be are celebrating not mine is eating healthy and meanwhile fell. Our main event that land is our national healthy lunch staying that's gonna be happy and I'm November Avant. And we have a couple great event happening that day they're all going to be listed on our web page. I had a long way to. National hobby lined stay all throughout the month or gonna be launching new recipes cooking demos grocery last. Try to eat healthy during the holidays and lots lots more and it can all be found I'm net diabetes dot org that forward slash AT and look. For American diabetes month. And how we ever learn to enjoy that act and eating healthy and celebrating American Diabetes Association month. And I tell you how you said the holidays are on the way. Could have a hard look at the book read that you have some but I agree recommendations at the bit about how to do how to do a good plate of food. Well as far as the holidays are concerned is. Just kind of in general you I think mid just having. A healthy life sell your round. And then flap of the way I grew up I'm Lebanese can we grew up on what is now touted as the Mediterranean diet. Of course we didn't know it back then but we ate very seasonably. And so what I think I guess I agree with tailored perfectly well as far as. Have a smaller site dinner plate first the ball. And then as far as making. Like the start she didn't eat meat starchy vegetables or even too much meat protein that Starr at the plate. Don't do that start filling it up with that she said the greens than non starchy greens the healthy whole whole grains. Like vocal leader he you know thinking well some of the greens that are aren't adored so quickly into your body. And then go with the starchy vegetables and the meat it doesn't mean you have to sacrifice. You get a pillar said basically you have this sort of re saying. How your plate look at what you're putting on it in with the kids when you said before. They don't like eat their greens are a that is so true you know kids often times. And Taylor I don't know how old you are but I am now Graham also I've got two generations. Stupid eaten at my people. And when my kids were little what we used to do was let them have a little pact in the garden or in a pot. And growth and healthy greens we can't like a salad garden. That that made them more aware and more interested in trying new things. But. Even it with a healthy greens you can. This guy is a whole lot of good things in Mac and cheese I have found. And I you know kids love Mac and cheese since spaghetti that you could. Generate some broccoli or some other good greens than there. And even some hail. And just don't tell them violate say they don't need to know that it's good for them don't say oh yeah others Kaelin there or there's some broccoli in the there's lots of ways but I think you have to start out small. You can't just you know bombard them with a lot of healthy food that they're not used to eating them. How the American diet changed over the years real. Oh my god. I think today were first the ball for a lot more aware of what we're eating don't you think that Taylor would be I'm more educated. Especially with things like diabetes affect me when I was a kid I never even heard the word people would say oh they've got that she has too much sugar. In her system and that's how it was described. But I think the awareness. With people like Taylor and in the American diabetes that association. Has brought into the forefront how to eat healthy and you know what little changes make a big big difference. And the thing about sugar is. I mean it's been just about everything so you can use substitute. The issue girl with sun media you know a natural sweetener. Again not caloric diabetic based hundreds of times sweeter than sugar you're gonna find your healthier. And you gonna feel better too. I think that's all water you were describing earlier sounds pretty fantastic. Quality is being you know I tell people what they don't have fresh mint what they can do that that they just take the lemon. And the media and the water and make healthy drink. Oh my gosh you're gonna do their body good and by the way people don't know this but you can read a lemon. And I you can freeze them naked after that there candid during the deputies set them or just freed them hole if you ever find them on sale in grocery. Freed them hold because the freezing process doesn't. Aspect of vitamin C contest he does but not freezing so long. I encourage all my students that the first thing you do that first drink the water that you have in the morning at least put the squeeze of Lebanon there. Let's agree recommendation a lump freezing women that's good. So Taylor in the last minute or so that we have here let me ask you if if somebody is concerned about diabetes where should they start. Yeah out of the great crash and and one great place to start is our web page we have a meeting resource says before. Eighteen a risky task and one of the first big deal you when you visit the idea dot org is our US Rex and it leads you real. There's very simple questions that you can end here on your own trying to figure out. If you are at risk for developing baby in half beauty that wrist tapped at a great time to give your doctor call and didn't see if you do need how to further discussion without getting screened for eight media's been getting your blood glucose tactics.
