This isn't it true scope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program I'm Gary blocks and never thought I have too much stuff they even need to donate something. We're store something. If you fall into one of those two categories this is the show for you to organizations that come together to help you out. I'd like to welcome Terry Drake and founder and CEO of livable and Roy swords interim director for the arc of Multnomah County you guys look Demitra scope. Thank spirit. The delegate martyred. Number and the Arkin noble have a great partnership but I thought we first get started today by letting everybody know what the article Multnomah County is where did you did you take that. Sure there for Multnomah County has been around for just over sixty years. We provides services also for families and individuals with developmental disabilities. And and that includes everything from advocacy helping people. Fine line to get benefits to direct services so including helping people's stay in their homes. And providing recreational assistance. Just a real variety assertions for people intellectual developmental disabilities. Start. Tiller who started was part of a national movement it's over sixty years ago. It's part of a group that was founded initially. As an advocacy groups of people with developmental disabilities. Sixty years ago in particular were treated. We were basically invisible on our society so people. Ban of the term it is not that the correct term boat people were referred to as individuals and mental retardation. And the only option if you were a parent and you had a child. With what an intellectual developmental disability was to send the child to an institution or keep the mobile home what you and so the institutional or truly horrible. I'm proud certain organs. Close to what has caused all of their institutions spent many years now since we've had any open. End of the art was initially was. Do a lot that extra work so there was. Consisted of parents who were working to keep their children out of institutions who were pushing for services so now. Bow forward. Several decades and we have. Laws we have that since no one considers it unusual to have a child with a disability. Going to school with other children and being integrated into the system. And institutions are close our community based services so. Today the arcs are focused primarily on delivering services that still do quite a bit at the could see a big part of what we do but Tom today at Portland and around the country. Most of our focus is providing services directly to people. And we need. Funding to do that which is why our partnership with where blue bowl a wonderful thing deceit coming on board. Absolutely so let me introduce a Terry treatments can founder and CEO of global. Terry tell us about livable what is livable. Question we are you ballet storage company Jan. Tell you that the word about it it means is we do the work for you. If you need storage. Initiatives you know being the people living in our and so. Very. Important so our burgeoning accident. Terrible development. Support. I mean if he'd walk all the boxes of that you don't walk and you won't Smartphone app to get photographed him and names that allowed you choose. To easily but treat them animal trick about the storm and deliver back pew when you're reading it. So pretty simple. Pretty easy to think about the credit bloopers storage or. Because that would probably will be used all of these days either. But it's that easy. On a map so you're very straightforward service. Catering primarily to allow the folks in power. So where when I when I checked my box is you come in to the morgue where you take them. So we store them it's silly. In. I beat the and so. Actually additional storage facility Extra Space Storage. The luge all right. Console are we would read you know the big unit there and then put our customers depictions. It's one of those units. We have organize them like to Wear out so we could tell where ones seeking to bar is set that bar BQ what backup catcher. Halloween decorations or something like that. We feel that brought it back up to. That's only an amazing service I have tons of stuff that I don't need your round I just need further blow a little bit like wintertime or or summertime. That you must have a lot of customers if that's what a wonderful idea. And I thank you very much and that is exactly it seasonal clothes and and bouts of machines are number one. Number two UST more. Sporting goods so will be at NY UK is that kayak or standup paddle sport after sport chi -- bad. Like the parade he's the biggest thing that's totally take a while the board plot just keys in addition to and then you know as you might imagine. No wonder why cumulative pre tax records we have law that blocks as people thought oh. The key and and then decorations no big tool that is surprising once a lot of people bought. Spent a lot of money buying themselves you know skill dog won't septa didn't seem to be willing to outwit that don't use very so. Pretty. And I assume everything is very well protected in the storage. In the end and we're very proud that we have never lost. Anything that customers order and trust we think that's one of us. Think he listens and then. We get we have very friendly folks who basically come get out there pure torture do it so option is trying to basically make it easy occurred the increasing number of people out. After Portland customers don't own car. And that's the future. You know everybody wants to walk and then play so should do it becomes more difficult if you need our site storage and so we just come here cracked or it could go to. In practical terms if I need my Halloween decorations right away how quickly do I get them for me. Full service is the next day. We only capture in circumstances where people. The same day we were able to accommodate all of arms but normally for the members are that word we're getting. And keep inform you saw that you know. The use it didn't immediate. You know we actually do quite a bit like delivery for the weekend and it's just kind of Osama where. Instead of leaving it in your call later hour or so when you're balcony. People will lead whether it and then when they're actually believes that they'll have to deliberate. You know that day you know clearly you know ski. And this kind of seem small by. Multiply that he's not people kind of treat it as an extension of their ought to and it's probably an alternative for a lot of them do get a bigger part of that. They're just so darn expensive these days that that people are out our chocolate I. Astle pencil and apartments in the end condominiums that the smaller living is getting harder and harder to find. Can you tell me how calm livable has hooked up with the arc of mobile account. Well we kind of hit because if people per. One is a personal thing actually. Has the city. I'm just past fifty years ago what developmentally chilled juice down center console. Will all my upbringing Al. She worked at slate very much like our coverage from Calgary. And Alberta Canada. And so all it is really easy for me too loud to embrace our. As in aren't completely. Understand appreciate it's. Support there. They're vicious. I'm outside in and plus he one of things that happened look you're here on. Why don't want the very first customer that we got actually absence speaks and donated items. Who challenges of living in the apartment is small and easy cheap to donate. Thanks and Ludacris who he had asked it is a Japanese yeah sure we're happy to and so we dropped to drop outs add to our local value village in Seattle and didn't get straight into a relationship with Saudi diligent all they are charity partners and that's actually how we came restricts you. Are we are. And the introduction commercial center Valley Village. Children are at a battle over the last people. Well it's very cool and introduce once again Roy soared C interim director for the arc of Multnomah County. Now Roy what does it mean to have a business like global booted giving you so much support. Well it means there may brought to us. So the couple things that it that it has so. Well it helps the community warm. When there so whether people have. People go to. In our society we go through a lot of things particularly clothing. There's a huge turnover and who work rather than that quoting knowledgeable Antrel. We're sure unfortunately it's a great deal with those code to. It can be resold so. The what do livable dozens when they get. Donations of clothing and other household items. Then they give them to us all we then do is strong partnership with the values villages. We get paid for those goods. So it's a source is a significant source of revenue for so. By working with that have been working with us we. Hope their environment we keep landfills. Less thrilled. And to provide funding to support the mission though they are ongoing. Can you tell us what so what some of the services that are provides. What would do what sort of some things you do. Or earnings were doing. A lot of these days is swore to what people just keep their independence. More and more individuals. Live on their own aren't they live with family members. And it just on her side just a little bit that help. They can stay independent so we have staff that work with people that. How often do grocery shopping help on what Serb. Finances. In a lot of cases. Get the mouth and do things were racially. Isolation and the big issue with people what. What developmental disabilities is so it's very easy their percent of all men and you get in front of the TV and not get out and connect with people. So keeping people independent and then down well over recreation club the beach couple times tomorrow. What shirt. People just the group decides what they want do they get out they go for walks so Supreme Court. Go bowling growth resumed go to movies. And so that's that's been a long term thing and very popular and would also do some specialized services are. We provide behavior supports. For individuals. That that need to. But it got. Behavioral challenges and we help them find a way to positively. Channels. That are motions and and end up and give them the opportunity to to be. No more active in the community here so just a few things that we do. So tell me about some of the challenges of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities facing our community. Quell the so I mentioned earlier that things have changed and and the largely. In the bigger picture has changed. For the good. And Oregon. Is fortunate to have some some very good service is provided to PR public agencies however. It's still. There's still a lot of challenges I think number one. The biggest thing that I hear from people currency is isolation. It is people. Are easily isolated. It is difficult to make friends. While we like to think cover so also are more open and inclusive society often are as people work with. Severe disabilities. It's easy for them due to be included in new regular. Things some things that we take for granted society. I'm just going boost for participating here sporting events. So isolation I think it's a real challenge so that's something that we want. A home the support of people with I think the other. Big challenge and something that we're looking at entering into with our service we provide colonel but it's employment. The unemployment rate of people with disabilities is. It's it's very very high it's it's almost certain it's it's like. 70%. Is the unemployment rates are home now that's normally if you flip it around. Four. Normal. Labor market economics. Arm that's how many people are usually working there's there's a whole lot more you know are you sure about unemployment rate the Portland metro area. I believe is around five and a half percent and and you look at the unemployment rate for people with disabilities it is. That's at least 70% so there's many many people that want to work. And the whose lives would be very different they had the option to the work. So those are just you're a couple of challenges that I think people face daily certainly in the unit in the Portland area housing in the challenge in all we're saying look. Cost of housing is becoming higher and higher and these individuals have generally a pretty limited income so that's also very secure. Challenge. What are some of the ways our listeners can help support the arc. Such. As well first of all they care and donate clothing and I think 10 what great ways they can support the his body. Working liveable so it's or what your great service and if they work with them and they have so items that they need to donate that benefits susteren well. So the other thing is we also operates. A couple of dropped all sinners. Thumb warm on the final period it is drugs so you want those on. Northeast all been so they can drop off. Clothing and household good to a 16929. North east are all big. Who and then. Also if there on the left side they can we have a drop off spot on Paris born. And that has torn area are home at northwestern evergreen parkway at northwest can road by the aren't the mobile store. Bill than they can do is to volunteer. Then again that they go to our web site they can they can almost. Look up. I mean they can apply for volunteer opportunities were always looking for great. Volunteered and certainly. Plumes certainly were always hope for donations loop for cash type. So that there are a number ways people can help us out. You would say you can check. Yes it is WWW. Stop the arc mole dot org when we saw that. CHE. A RC. And you know he got oh Archie. Let me introduce again Terry Drake and cope founder and CEO of livable now. We knew how did you initially get hooked up to have be helping out arc. So as I mentioned we have had. Apple partnership with people that I do that you operate all across the country an awful old number work well. Carter's that you should just took our. Sure until we came down to pull you look at the list could control creek at our schools so we are perhaps. So we give them that it something that Tehran that while we're talking. I actually have an idea we will we outsource cleaning up boxes so if you want to talk about out crude some important employment we shoot yourself why. That does beyond doubt that will be wonderful and it. And so so what we've always done this so it's a streaker got any time where customer's location on border well happily accept Clark and deliberate sheer facility. And so what we were talking about you know we we have we have the ecosystem so there leadership. And it's really you know there are so many worthwhile things to do to stop. But only one I agree it lets you keep inaudible and tell us more attention. And so you know for god. It's a natural and to be able to just you know picking up golf a lot to them back they shouldn't he stroked the two dollars nor is it on the residential areas and suburban area. Are there are donation box and people can drop stuff off. But that is what they did not intend you know entered in court and so what we found had been talking to our our customers. More than a lot of you know kind of you know sheepishly admitted that. That. Be alternative to giving it to us through the guitar which was often. Actual away and it can also terrible book that we need it so easy. That that there and so. So I think no I think that you were either come I'm talking yesterday. Naturally be open doors you heard who'd fit you know you've mentioned you've tried two different ways to. You're got to pick it up permanent and it's in the tout in a track that's where we are all the time so it's easier. For a that's very difficult that search for a world is what can we also provide. Sort of court pick up service. Which you can call or check our web site and information on that but. Accessing them providing. Pick up services. Or were. Just getting access to apartment dwellers has been a challenge for us to at this difficult if you got an apartment with sixty units and got. Want her to people that really wanna donate. Just the logistics of finding that person and leaving their stuff and everything it's it's so challenging that's how it's been a difficult. Group to to support so it's pretty exciting to have this opportunity to live ball. Terry do what motivated you to come up with a livable ecosystem. It would wanted to act. Saying you know all all just want to keep it out we'll show. I guess I have been around that this space you know they're release does the kid. Do you need to do with it and and it it always is great you know that there's so many items that people. If people aren't you think. Time that they intimate it makes a difference to somebody else's life. And so anything we do the parent you know Nikki here. Are you look at the had a war not been education you know also helping people. Can deal with there stopped it also looked at her word is well believe we've got all these other kind of funny ones where it's. You know will make it easy once you haven't won about oxygen inhaler and in our facility and you can just one click and basically. All that purse they are. I'm sure that your friends or bring it to strangers. Com or. Probably the onion he curious. You probably don't want those neighborhood. Car sales were. Everybody basically put us out in the end of the day. You're you are pretty much a lot of stuff but it's different. And and so we call us walking the dog I've got to block that random stops. That I and I am happy that you somebody else offer. Their cost of random stuff. That I can not trade happened and you've that I got in milk I got a new arbitration years sister that I can have a bit stronger. Put that's crickets I know somebody wants to use the little service services and how how they do that. You'd think it's just to go to our web site so that movable Portland got caught so L I V I DEL Eakes. Portland dot com and and I want to integrate and so I think it. Service you can use the web site she'd like to place your order or do all black the boat club shop iPhone iPad and android defined structure around you that it is really the no contract no commitments at the door to try and style. Actually it's sad is that it's not just look at that that. You were saying some some of the mode more common things or Lakeland decorations and bicycles and he used the tools. You believe destroy lots of. People I think I think we all have lots of stuff. The thing that wouldn't Perkins for a youth of armored truck from the apartment gotta love story about what five boxes were provided a fight. That most typical flu. Mixed. And what they'll tell us those that you know it is very small apartment getting grabbed my stuff on the play more than double their closet. It's cool to pretty you know down easy win. And that's about it when he tried dollar mark. I think so it's small it's not a big guys the big number but it makes a big difference that trickled up. A hole where stopped when you're better off the balcony. All answers to. If you're Livan and 500 square feet getting reform boxes and a bike is this a lot especially so hooked up. A lot of it exactly. That's somebody apartments being built some new apartment being built the Portland area now they're not they're not huge apartments in many cases so. They're great terrorist. And we're all trying to beat the Livan smaller will not maybe not all of us are still some those giant mentions everywhere. But in there are a lot of people are trying to live in a much smaller space. That's for sure. I suspected the next generation don't millennial really. You know they walk the walk. You know they wanna live and work downtown and wanna get a minimize their act. On the under so yeah that's probably error are strongest in the customers. Some of that generation. And there were they they they are monitoring and probably a little different it. On this sort of thought the worst story is that the people who do regular eat certainly US you know kind of cause an extension we have this summer cool winter you know we have here immerse all the get. Enter. You know clearly there are some things that it is not for awhile like my docket. But a lot of that is certainly active use not the kind of caught extension. In the last couple minutes we have here let me ask Roy you if somebody needs services from the arc how'd they do that. He beat a player here has just give us a call it we have person who can provide in taken and support there. And our number to call their's 503. 2237279. And will provide you know maybe some of the week can do directly or many cases it's. That's a matter of getting the person to the right place the suit so. The service delivery system for individuals to be very confused and we can help sort that out. I have put the right place where they'll get taken care of. The certainly sounds like an ideal relationship between livable in the dark they give to it's they just kind of go hand in hand. We thank you were very. Like to thank you both for being on the show today Terry Drake and founder and CEO of livable and Roy swords interim director for the arc of Multnomah County. They're bigger and here.
