This is metro school. They never come radio Portland public affairs program I'm Gary blocks and the company and named sleep train to become synonymous with helping Al Foster kids. And right now we're in the middle of sleep train Foster kids toy drive. I like to welcome Gena Davis vice president of marketing for sleep train to microscope hygiene. Now. So how are things going with toy drive it's that time here. It is that's nightmares of their biggest drag for the entire year it's always an exciting one. For an in the community. And you're raising toys are bigger but how you toy drive. For what reason. In fact it's her first posture used in your area so we're basically asking for a Neil team is totally and you know electronics for teenagers who came guess that your children are. Because her nephews or you know 2000 neighbor header asking for re wanna make sure that. At a posh account has a a little something special the holiday season. And sleep train has been working with Foster kids for many years current. Yeah how overt over ten years now actually and which is super exciting and and that it's always been an annual favorite. It's actually the one that brings out the most media members that we have the highest number of donations that ultimately find a lot of companies in churches in clad in groups and Girl Scouts cents. Shelter and that hold their own drives and then you know it donate to this program went to prepare after so it's one that really. A lot of people get in Boston. Well thought Tammy year everybody feels good about giving something. Yeah it does play I'll you know you can run and as you can find that you know although they integrate that with your kids they have like made irritation Mac then again. Trip down memory lane in you know it's it's fine you can hit those failed Thanksgiving. Weekend then and you don't get even more different it can out. Yeah that's a good time to buy because things are on super sale. If you tell yet and you know up an icky cute looks at the deals Acadia have a specific I am really unique presence for. Infant all the late teens boys and girls so every everything gets put to use there's. You know. A lot of children you know over 20000. And just in our area alone that are in Foster care says there is no shortage as we need to do to help us. The season. Why loosely trained in so involved with Foster kids. Well we originally added a lot of things for a lot of different. You know nonprofits in different areas and we decided we just wanted to focus herself when we wanted to puke. Focus on one thing and really put all of our hearts an effort to making a really big difference. I meant that we were doing a little bit here in the air in one of those things let's Foster kids and they're really not economic pie isn't. And look around it as he'd like nope didn't actually talking about that nobody's talking about these kids they're young there's thousands of them. And they needed huge there's you know. These children taken from their homes by no fault of their own. Some horrible situation endorsed sad situation that even just be attacked and the family and there's no one have to take them. But either way they've you know they're they're taken from everything they are now in an according to a new environment which could be stressful for for anyone. And often times they come in just clothing on the back especially if they're coming from a humpback has drugs and how ordinary their belongings are contaminated. And still coming with just the clothing on their backs deuce close ties to go to school their shoes you know. You know police is something of comfort and PJ. Costa parent have to concentrate and to provide everything they need from scratch. So we really hot pot pot when all of our stores across the entire region which we would have a quite a few. We have warehouse facility they determine employees we you know we average height and have a lot of connections in the neighborhood. That we felt like we could make a difference that we can be champions for these kids. And sometimes some many these kids say this happened so quickly for them that they are taken from what I know in two and they're put into Foster care. Yeah a lot I a lot of times they get and pulled from the school day or they get pulled you know just what analysts just which usually grab a quick and just for the safety of kids. And and that can beat you know traumatic and to make sure that the parents are prepared. And despite the map Foster parents are actually paid comes. The way sort of actually covering an average cost to the child so parents struggle all. To provide everything they need especially when you have to provide everything instantly with very little noticed that your receiving these children. But even if you had a child for awhile to get to corral ray you view by the news and they might be got a baby data for a month later. And we wanna make sure that these kids feel good about themselves that they're able to focus and school. That they feel at that that there you have it good sense of war and that somebody caring for the on the somebody's looking out for that men into thinking of them. And that's I think especially nature around the holidays this smear really had time for costs easily from their siblings it's. Where the family that they've known or just not knowing you know it can't get behind me and you know our job is cute you can't tell little extra help. And make sure that these kids around taking care. The other threw us a train toy drive comes in. Tell us a little bit about the secrets have part of the toy drive to. Well the baby you can pick got to play it now aided and again and that you're keen employees and girls. And you know book. Totally movies gift cards and you can actually donate online and they give this topic will be done for the child specifically wanted a great way to do it. You can host a drag we also had a little contest going where if you take a picture of yourself I am making your getting sent. You can upload it on and get them or enter to win on our FaceBook page and we'll suitor random winner that like an iPad mini note there's a little extra Christmas gift that you can't. But I did use and if you wanna participate in that way. Hello good to you told me in the past that so many global every one of your employees. He gets really involved in the in every charity event at that sleep train does how to how do you how the whole gang get involved. Yes it thicker after it is you know always been neck and current app for it kind of become over the years the heart of our company. And we have a saying it called it's predicated on that and and it will do whatever we can't attack it for these kids though. You know the drivers pick up all the donations and they have the huge job of sorting Manning getting them out the nonprofit. And from our warehouse crew our sales team you know get all the donations and how that community members then it's. And you know interact with all of our donors every day in. And our corporate teams you know there today accounting team is cutting chapters of nonprofits but I'll online donations come in and the advertising team make all of the materials. And everybody in our company can donate two days at paid days a year and he carried HE. And many of them choose to focus on the Foster care program that it's just becomes. Come part of our everyday life sit at the nice little break to see your efforts to change some on site. Pencil that would be that person gets a dog and go shopping. And I do on that team with a. Yes but and we are real we're all donors are felt that we you know we make donations that the stores Reebok that you can actually set up for re occurring donation online and be don't have time to think about it and then you know each drive you're actually helping. Kids' spirits though and we all believe that you know frak you think we need help we've got a ticket BA beat big part about it while. How can no business or even an organization holds their own drive. Now we kind of companies that participate a lot of protect but I say this school supply drive and the strides. At the Twitter is specifically are they get it and plead not I I think rockaholic a lot of companies want to play it. Yeah out of Christmas tree in half buried their employees coming down me. And and you can definitely do about you know did you we actually have a collection now let's say they give you a poster and there's ample FaceBook. But pose an example email to make it easy for you. And that you just you know act for the donation you get them going dropping off part two are any of our stores. And and we we do that. You know hard work at getting an activity just for the holidays. Out. It's tight we we have all the donations coming to our warehouses each week so that we can sort and count of certain talent we gave several distributions just because. You know that there one of the dread the had a hard day ahead. And our driver officially and on now and December 13 so we have enough time to get an item about before and before Christmas. So the earlier you donate the batter and that we we get donations are always apps even at up to Christmas than even past Christmas. And that donations mechanic come after best and they can't get re purpose towards sports they get some things like that that are obviously Petit is. Possibly. The putter is going on right now to throw appeared sleep train has its all kinds of drives that helps help bolster its tells us some of the so if you do throughout the year. Yet we have at the beginning of the year right after the holidays Steve Scott at the gym drive which is that it agreed to part one make sure that can don't have them. You know peak of comfort and warmth and are going to sleep and with that issue drag which gets to head out. Active and you know you don't know hold their comfortable they feel good about themselves speak about the clothing drive which is a big self esteem booster make sure that they. If you can't bomb around again and you know have that this thing is that they need you to feel well and and you know just an essential. And the schools abide drag making sure they're ready for school and and then we go back and accused ticker and I and I we have Erica gamma ball in rebate money. Where you Campbell in your PGA. Yeah I and it raises money for extra curricular activities do you tickets can give piano lessons and sports thing can happen you know all the little experiences that can make a big difference in a child's life. So all the drivers we have coming up throughout the year now would be a good time to shop for all those are. Yeah I think he did drag coming up in January that upon you know that the pilot deals on pad down under for the holidays. That it'll definitely get but he we actually accepts donations and any other donations all year round. And they'll always gets you cater only thing needed me make sure that those kids you know all the donations Qatar Foster partners and and poor is particularly focused this. On. And the best place to if you do we'll go out participate in and get a toy for child. You can drop off at any sleep train stores and right. Yep anything change story that it became dot com to find the story lines you can also go on to make it online donation and or. You can set up. An online campaign we could actually email out and posted FaceBook or Twitter into Graham when every used to encourage other people's. They don't talk. And and it has to try to information and there's. We also usually have a different offers throughout the year with there might be special offers if you have a donation like discounted tickets to trans Siberian orchestra at coming up. And or gain in our hands and kind of turned their season there's discount to affairs say Tony check and he that there has gone on. Do you know some of the hot toy is open this year. What are what are the what does what does it really want. Well I have a five year old an eight year old thank you speak to that means our leader Ali that get what it's like I've been there are again bands and electronic for teens. You know and keeping players and things like that are always really popular movies around why can't we get that we get a good portion of bike which is streak at those kids active. To do hers. You know it's Star Wars movies coming out I'm sad that's going to be big hit this year I am definitely not the toy expert. Pat and I think he had that way or at electronic rally even just you know teens like clothes and makeup and things like that and you can't go around there's so many capable will match up to their Atlanta. And I think here it's a pretty safe bet to anything that has Star Wars on it is going to be pretty up. I think. I predict that yeah I think Star Wars character is well and that remember that they're toddlers than. And you know in an excuse oh yeah some of the book and and little the baby technically am definitely come into. Play QB is yell we want to make sure that you know there's something to be bad for owning something happier outlook. And to have no possessions can can really help him you know he hurt somebody else forests that have this thing that is. Bears the vacated you know in Iraq what can take quick and even when they moved on to a different faster how much it would definitely happens. And we wanna make sure that one need kid to have a positive memory something you know signed in public forwards he wouldn't you know that. That glamour article can get in their eyes around this time Riviera just the hope and what could be you and me we wanna make sure we. We have we're able as a community to make sure that these kids how that went. Really helps these Foster kids still loved and cared for. Totally act and that's actually really great opportunity to see your kids how to get back at you about to take out those I tried but your own children rain. As paid yet take after the toy Allen and so that you're not I'm not thinking what you would want but you know. It gear you know there's an eight year old boy doesn't have to choice what he thinks he could watch you know he'll create you know community members that will learn to get back throughout their life. That's a great way to instill in them in your children. The idea of charity. You have to completely and you when you drop off that plane that the store ice cream on my own children I don't think she's all all of the guys that particularly that's why it's. And their faces as they're making this donation daylight. And they you know they get excited and it salespeople do a great job. And our stores and making a big deal on these kids come in with their donations and do it on over the donations than you know make them feel like. They've made a big difference because because they had back. Just teaching math skills to children at number really important he left the company. There really feels good to get. The of course cats I mean you can you can imagine that they've played being opened yeah on Christmas morning in the reaction it can get Al. There's there's no there's no that involves that she is pure joy. Leo we don't we all remember the excitement of Christmas morning that's that's that's a big day today. If somebody is unable to undo some toy shopping and make a donation that way they can still donate online but with the monetary donation right. Yeah it is donated became a comment you pretty easy just click on the botched its page click on donate now you can at a very occurring donation if you wanna donate a little bit each month that. Every dollar makes a big difference you know there's so many of athletic community we all donate you know I dollar five dollars. We we have people that donate huge sums of money. And it it there's so many kids we can also make you know make a really big impact. And you make donations throughout the year how how is that dumb. Donation news. It's not it's used for what ever drive it pat you know is happening during that he that he's been so if you get dating it's. You know in January it could be stripped pajamas and security in April academies do prefer clothing and really those donations to events. Cents Q are nonprofit partners to. Are then able to shop for our our work with the parents are shot for the items with the kids specifically lots that's. Give the app posture and had the ability to shop for themselves which is also when. How many Foster kids are in our area. 220000. And you know. It is basically in our area and there's over 400000. And then in the country on any given day wishes. Commotion on incomprehensible. Number yeah. Yeah it's it's it's a crazy number of kids think it's coming in Medicare every day around sometimes become Medicare. And you know several times throughout their lifetime and I'm semi remaining carried her whole life and and they may move three times Jamie Ernst and Amy Luke fifteen types depends on the out of the circumstances and at which homes they're kind of landing and connect individual circumstances that. No matter we kind of take that position has no matter how kids and it happened careless situations they came from march. You know what Foster parent they landed when they all knee issues that they all need to feel good and parents again any clothing they need to. School supplies we wanted to succeed in its core that's the first step preferred them to be able to really make an honor Allen. We want them to have positive memories and show and feel that people care about them not talk about them especially. For the holidays which is a very you know part time for people without their families. And so it does end the game. And during the Tamil boy you know having those life changing moments where you learned musical instrument instill confidence to even make a difference he. You get self confidence with your first home Branyan all of these things they they're happy that they can means so much more to a child that does not. Haven't I. Don't sing the praises for a moment of the Foster parents out there. Yeah people. Definitely that I mean there. We we Alabama load testing these aren't just. Children that are entering cared either children have. You know faced abuse and neglect and have trial mind you to get over. So we don't need Foster parents struggling over fighting machine that should there be we need them focused on helping these children had just. And deal with the situation that they get an. And they've got a lot to overcrowded and with these with the kids city and they deserve our support. And they do receive some help us aren't just opened. Gather at a bank and paid Q Foster parents in the amount depends on the need of the tiled whether it bears special education they have different medical means. And over 50% that's posture you'd actually added has at least what chronic neither injury or method. So there's things in the next that we don't even think about it. And but the average bank then Pedro Foster parent comes significantly shorts have meetings with the average cost of a child so. Speaking. You know things like. Joining the baseball team prided lessons or things like outages so far beyond their ability to do its. And if you also think about the the that the talent they're just providing for one child they might be able to provide for one extra cab but what if that's attempt to cap they perceive here. He you're from Italy to go so far you can only you know. And many of these are single component is around met most Foster parents are. To have at least one stay home parent. And it you know because of all these issues pertaining to overcome with these kids so I you know. We need to be there for our Foster parent they need to show these Foster kids that we care that people are thinking about bands. And and there's just so many wonderful community members and so many wonderful Foster parents. It has been a privilege to be able to keep this program you know grow it year after year after year even through depression and B I donations increased. And they give you this story is coming through. We have attendants at ten year old girl that we just to duke got a story back back quick where. She'd actually hosting her drive on line she's got her own hash tags he went distorted pictures for her own campaign typical home Gillick a little marketer in the making. And and still many kids get they get their birthday gift and instead of having an act and asking for gifts for their birthday they're asking for donations for Foster kids. And every every week as outdated maps so. You know it's just. It's heartwarming. Yeah let's just about the sweetest thing ever heard. While so many give us some ideas that maybe it's new ideas for groups out there how they can do their own fundraising. That's geared at age you have an op says that you want to get your having a Christmas party coming up you don't ask for people to bring a donation. And you know like you're doing it you're in an offense terrier and Calabria a conserved. You know think about you know including the detonation Munich court collecting two later posse expert collecting books for Foster youth. You know I have to do you you'd be surprised but just that simple request tonight and I wrapped box. To an accomplice then eight people look at just give them the opportunity. Yeah absence for sure now it now say that somebody didn't collect a whole bunch of toys at their business or with their church or their group. Is it is intensely trained to do you have the opportunity to go pick things up. We can't give that rather large stagnation and you can just reach out satire I think the page or. By the pay to have an which has the contract everything on and we can arrange I pick up or you can donate at any store that's near you. Lots of people have done pride in their coal companies and taken a picture they all troops down there they wanted to make a donation as a team and I think that's wonderful. And you know hi every you want to get your critics credit EB EB surprise that what a team wrapped around it cod can do with a great team building that experience. Oh yeah for sure I've done that with my friends before we had a Christmas party nobody brought. Donations it was a it was a fun thing to do. Pat I mean it's you read Ebert and everybody bringing a bottle Weiner you know it's something that you. You know like delta get the people were used am ever again having having it make you have such a big difference can can be wonderful. And during toy drive you're looking for toys for helping kids of all ages. Yeah impotence which means and I think teams had a hard on because it's it's fun to hit. You know little kid to play action and would be definitely still mean to beat a ton of those kids that think about what that teenagers. My wanted to while whether that's even he has quoting her make up our electronic or dvd and the people donate laptop ten. And I had the data in you know Nigeria what every your level of compatibility with these will definitely get matched to the children not that almost in giants. Are there any anything that mum we shouldn't buy. No we I mean meet people take you know are to their kids of all ages all different mikes so. If you think yes I can't aircraft hit those are all wonderful wonderful get ability to me after that you don't wrapped them. Because we don't know what's inside Norris matter not to but now that's the W wrapping it we will unwrapped it and they're deliberately them on rats did little. Will make them to make sure thing gets to the rake it. Do the toys get wrapped before they're delivered to the kids. We have unwrapped for the nonprofit to that they cannot imagine tickets but they definitely get you know rap didn't. And Christmas tree everything else like that. I'll have some wonderful. Yet so what are the dates for for toy drive it's going on right now it out to get it okay. And we can make donations at any sleep train and I I dare you anybody out there listening to not know were asleep training as he goes everywhere. Gates issued the edict amity you don't ally and you can you know honestly can didn't do Glenn you know given the Agassi could go to the trade are commonly about all the stores at a store let it air race there on the top of the page speedy access. To kinda bad am. There's there's should be like where you are. Experts are saying it now it's around the corner. And the slipped into we have this is the fun month. This is that this is the problem throughout the year. This is definitely definitely a fun one there's so it's Yeltsin. Drew real live your memory lane need allies there's. Care bears are back at my little pony is that aberration or K kitten you know detective game mild to this is some of the final game of monopoly at RE Ian.
