This is meant to scope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program and your clocks and still looking for some exciting high school basketball action and do you wanna check out the less club invitational which is coming up just right after Christmas I'd like to welcome John McCallum the president of primetime sports too much just goaltender Don. I don't know what I'm doing good how about yourself. Do great about this is a kind of a busy time for you because you've got a big tournament coming up at the end of the month. Yeah you'd ever visited that times are definitely in full swing per twentieth. Year of the tournament. Well well before we talk about the term until so what is a prime time sports. What primetime sports is there were local sports. Marketing management company that really focuses. On the high school athletics we've really tried to bring in. Top. Notch players teams. Whatever might be around the ice squandered spirit in both basketball. Football a little less trouble put on an all star game and we do stuff with Nike USA basketball public key hoops Summitt. Which focuses is on top ten high school basketball players against the top ten. International. Players all you know it's percent of them are going to go play in the NBA if I'm time. We do to make a global challenge in Chicago which is to be international event as well featuring the top. Forty. US high school players against four different countries. And in addition to day lush called an occasional. Presented by express employment professionals that we do other stuff with at charity golf tournament and things like that. While throughout the year. A year the tour with some pretty elite sell young athletes. Yeah we. From different events that we've put on. Every year or deal with future NBA guys you know future of tall guys. Those type of height in. Young athletes. You know guys like cardinal Anthony Kevin Durant. And a couple of other events you don't read Ted Okafor. That got drafted the number three overall flash your U countries are different event. In addition to you don't like that from the NFL guys that have come through you know our football game that's just through our state. That's amazing we have some pretty great athletes are under. There are there are kept clear so the next big one coming for you was the twentieth anniversary of the lessor of invitational tolls about. Yes so maybe it's pretty amazing that word and coat tie implies definitely but twenty years. The critical basketball term and that was originally. Created. To you to please help organs school. You know in their preteens and he'll be deemed that they just going and playing you know whatever city. Tony miles away. To guys NIC Robertson Gary Adams both long time. Pitt finished restoring and in great coaches throughout the state of Oregon I think. Could drivers and number two all time a coach and number three all time in but it wins that's. A different schools. But they had the idea of like it would start a basketball tournament because you don't work trying to go play games. And really this state tournament is the ultimate goal to win. But if you go home plate turnabout ball it is different then and in fees in tech game weekly point gain on Tuesday when you're on a Friday. You know state tournament is every single day fourteen in a row. In how do we keep kids ready for analysts do something in the pre season that all loudly would the old double A and he'll have the ruling words if they played four games in a tournament setting. Then you only count two gains against third there's schedule to allow two more games so obviously it's great for coaches that. You know get ready for the season by doing something like that but also show them how to played tournament style basketball and that was the goal behind it. When I first started obviously twenty years later it's turned into a national. Recognized tournament USA today that were probably number two. From the ranking wise as far as. He'll tell verge of playing there that the teams were getting. And it the amount attendant that comes out so it's a very very good thing that just happened within you know a twenty year span. Yeah it's pretty concentrated four days of basketball. Yes it is to get 32 games or those four days so if you want about a ball effective place to be. That's what I see you're selling tickets you can attend the whole thing if you want to. If you can't peaking at all 32 games and it's funny there's. Probably about ten to fifteen individuals I know they have gone to every single game since. You're one and they just had marked out back and is being basketball junkies and then. You know captured your Q your three Dick there really seen that we interpret anything outside school they feel whole different kind of round. And so the they by other senator pat weighed advance into preserve their time for. We'll schools are participating here. Locally. We have to make up 3:0 Jesuits central Catholic David Douglas park rose Bieber ten. Clock commit liberty. They can some one more locally. But the entity the big the big ones are we have a number one great Oak Hill academy out of Virginia coming in for the number one ranking in the nation. They have picked up at seven kid and very kind division one scholarships so there are very very good team. Number five ranked team the nation the map at a Washington DC either a legendary program as well and the numbers six. Team in the nation Garfield out of Seattle which up a lot of NBA did come from putting. Text later Brandon Roy as his school. But also some big big names come in and. Yeah I would definitely big names and were excited you know dispute when he here we have three teams ranked in the top of the six. So that's a very very yeah hard feat to do so obviously there were articles out there that an and an equality of players that come from there. So we're very excited about that. What's the selection process. Well it it's twofold one that we use that kind of committee that will lecture. The local school. From it and you covered seats expert about all the perks being coaches. Or people involved in the game to understand the teams not players. And then pretty national schools. We use our partnership with Nike to help bring in bill to the schools you can't just call up Oak Hill and just say you're gonna about the tournament. You know you need to have partners that will work with them Q get a Mac here just because you ever birdied. They return rather want that team to play form. So this is the twentieth you're bullish or be invitational I'm assuming there's been some changes over those twenty years tells about those. Yeah that's pretty funny you know tobacco we first started in year one we are. They can and how to make this agreed org events so it helped that he parked my fault too but we decided we were gonna play at three different sites you can groom lake. Obviously that's. When you get into it it's. Operational nightmare trying to. Played a pregame skate team back and forth her down at Salem where Buford then. Greta wetsuit first opened up it you're trying to get people all over the place was just. Very very it's difficult to do so we changed it we did that like let's find one place to go to so we went out pollute and Clark College. Played the whole terminal there. The attorney Randy if you didn't know it's become that popular that we you were told well by day you know 11 o'clock in the morning for a an evening game. Screwed so we decided we needed do something. The LBO world gonna go to which UP. Plated their play at the coliseum. And then into dealt before we actually went and and moved it up to the pre high school which is brand school and liberty Jim is actually the biggest jam in the northwest as far as. Seating capacity. So we've been out percent and it's been a great partnership. Through their just because the amount of people can come out there and instead they got so keep that. Political atmosphere being high school. There were pretty close to the court there's not a bad seat now. But still you're getting thousands of people that are able to enjoy the games. The other scraped the to pull off something that big you've got to have a lot sponsors and multiple smaller sponsors who. Yeah absolutely obviously ill let Schwab there's very good company in this state that does what they do from maturity aspect. And so we first created tournament there the first one to thought of just because a third support from not just high school athletic but just in there and every community. You know doing the right thing in just being a ball. Around it and so we don't were were. So so grateful to have those guys the supporting your partner you know from they want and you know they supported. It like no other so it. Just love those guys to death from all the stuff that they do. Nike obviously being the probably number one the other sports apparel company in the world you know having their. Partners has been great and then expression plant professionals. You know the staffing companies they're just like less Schwab they'd go through there and every single community. Around state to work and they understand the importance of giving back to communities schools. In different. Things and so we went and pitched in the idea they were on the work from the very beginning just because they understood. The importance of what did you what it is piggyback communities that purple and. It's great to have those those companies get really involved in the community just it just feels great. So tell so bullish on invitational at a benefit schools and communities outside of basketball. Sure well we do we actually from the beginning keynote there's the turn passes that. Told they can go to every single game. Around what we do is figure the schools that are involved in the term and we give those passes to them to sell to anybody want to and they keep our and the money. Enacting go to duke. A program can go to a club they can go to school can guidebook it's really up at the school look at when he used that money they make fourth. So it's been very very. A very good thing made over the twenty years I think we've read couple one point four million dollars. It's penal to whatever school and balls you know liberty being out there we are at their clubs to you know. Due to staffing part of it just because we know it goes back to that he could cause. Vs you know going out to let's separate vendor payment directly so those two things have been very beneficial. So what things so what kind of special things are going on delicious tournament. Well it was great it for years so we are we have a for history here around there Rick accustomed decking and fencing and other great sponsors the event it's coming out there. Putting up three TV either I think about ninety engines each double one kind of showing in history. Since you won all the way you know to the top forty years collage of all the great players that played in there. You know just different pictures things like that. Now we of one TV the TV you'll be showing you know NFL games. Ball game you know obviously it's four days are slaughtered and I spent a lot of time in the gym. We try to do other things with its so that'll be playing out there in addition to streaming from the games that are going on inside. And we'll have video game set up. Around but they're really really nice. Displayed at Rick does so we appreciate them doing that being a partner for the event. I Nike's gonna come out they you have plans to do something grandiose on the concourse itself at the gym. Kind of showcasing you know and I determined that athletes are Balkan and they're tougher products. So we're excited about the type of things and they'll do a you know kind of bowl walk through hall of fame if you will. Shall feel like educating players. Team that won it in the past you know just for the next forty year history piece they'll be critical look at. It's nice to kind of look back over those twenty years. Yeah it is it is. Do you have some of some highlights of most when he hears it like to tell us about. Yes it's it's been there since so many good game Tony give players come through. Bit because standout really is part of first and then Oak Hill came. Bewkes who we didn't know what really. We had fifteen hocus. Beefing about this is seventeen years ago. We cannot know what was going on the West Coast basketball wise that we bring that Steve has Nancy Reagan had an NBA players and they're a huge deal whole another level athlete. So based group crowd liter to 360 dunk during games you know to put highlight. You know. Lot of highlights and the word got out really fast in the system portals media spreading you know is really just word of mouth. The next they'd show up that Interpol behind you know how could the world weight advantage as we watch these guys. Military could you can't compare to like watching our uncle Trotter split in that help people were feeling about it. And then later on you know just the number of NBA players we've had you know it's great having Carmelo Anthony play in high school Kevin Durant you don't pylon and Brandon Jennings. A lot of great players you know Kevin Love Kyle Singler you know locally. That you'll really before they made it big in college NBA where there go and they came through here and he'll. Our fans got a champion DL before they made it big so that was a great thing. And then you know we had. Game Sonny ESPN is akin to you that. We don't NASA broadcast so he'll sporting kids are now being shown nationally and on TV play against other great schools. So we'll draw positive great things great memories. Pretty new tickets and will Schwab invitational. Working at the tickets for live from the tournament. Tickets yet you buy tickets online. Let's Schwab invitational dot com right now or you can buy it at the door of an obvious spirit a lot of games different questions ago to help. We don't go spot whatever people want to do there'll be available. Well. Yeah so we're definitely hoping president semi finals and finals. It's really intercede because we have so many games every day you know there's a constant influx and you know people come and and people go out. The post those night game is really you know it's maturity it's the winner time. People wanna come in there aren't really can be our schools. Compete against these outlets schools you know whatever ranking at number one of her five numbers six. And you happened to be a local west planned jesuit David Douglas park roads and your plane. That team that's won out a lifetime memory Nate you're gonna have split there's been upset that happened before you had. Four different team. That have come in ranked in the top three then I'll walk here and it to Oregon school just because there are so well coached we have kids appears that this. Play very very. Hard nosed. Basketball so it's it's a lot of fun to watch. If you tell says some of some of the local guys that are going to be plain to highlight some of those players. Yeah we have I mean obviously we have to be coming up the four time state player of the year paying Pritchard you know he's. Trying to go to war and and you don't he's better opportunity. Ahead of them then we've had teams come in in the last two years that you can that last second shot to knock mops soaked. That's a really really. Great player you know the very intelligent than he could handle the ball execute the ball you know to great grab for Hugo and he has an opportunity to access. Become four time player of the year. Support plan that a rogue state champion itself. We were expected him to do some damage with indeterminate. Just got a great team Terry porter's son mouth importer this honor and a great player. And then you have other field maybe not. Yet known. Names but they will be big and solid greatness turner meant you know because a lot of college coaches and head coaches that are attendance from division one school. That are looking at guilt whatever got a cap and recruiting. But they indicate they get noticed that that's like somebody doing you know pregame in a row it's put up point five points or add. Staunch defense rebounding doing ever. They make a name for themselves well in May have opportunity to maybe. Play at the next level just play how they perform against top level competition. Most seniors. Now they're all where we have fresh complain all the way through senior. So then this is you say this is pre season so they're just getting started. Yep and that's the deficit to great opportunity to be noticed because. Go with the outside. Talent we have coming in and no number kids that are you know rank in the top TP. Players that the nation mean you don't build college coach is coming into recruit them and you don't watch him and being noticed. They said there's been kids from Morgan at that have been the noticed. And you don't consummate radar and eventually they got their own scholarship because of what they didn't tournament. It's a great place to get discovered me to show off a little bit. But we'll Sony most excited about this year's tournament. Well just being twenty years you know really excited. To. The majority thing has been amount of alumni were called the come back and watched. The deal they've come through Nate yeah ironically in this in 2001. Played Carmelo Anthony or play in 2000 Tyson Chandler that was. Built the best game ever played in my life and so I like come back it's great scene. Both players you know coming here just to appreciate you know I looked at what they had and understand going on and come back in. And seeing the the next realm. People do it but then just. You know having three teams ranked in the top six. You know during the twentieth here is great and then. Coach Smith of Oak Hill he's gonna get his talent when you know it's a very very rear beat for any doubt spoke ocean make that. You'll get it out when if everything goes as planned for them obviously upset happened but it maybe by their second game playing. And so it'll be really really need to because you're all Hilton. That'll be different time back. And you know just having him a part of it and that it team departed it's been great and then if you could doubt when there'll be a natural. Ceremony. And that's pretty impressive. What. Added opportunity only has like 65 total losses while it took a that the it's a very good record. That's insane. And so we have some awards and it being handed out determined as locals what those. Yeah I will do it'll in addition we give up scholarships Flesch rather than mr. hospital ward that will be a scholarship to us as student that displaced. You know sportsmanship. Don't more than just speed old basketball talent just that all out hustling and see every lush Walton you know. Employee running out your card that's a good scholarship. But it will do all tournament team you know and our alternative TV can go on much rather occasional dot com and really. He's the type of players that we had so if you become a part of that group your ears something's special. So John tossing once again where we can get tickets for the last Robin additional. Yeah you bet let's fall in case some dot com and you can buy term path there that's good for all 32 games you can see every single game. You can buy general mission tickets we have eight total sessions. Every production is broken up before games the first morning session starts at nine general and at three. Immunity evening session we tip before I go poetry tend to go for fourteen. First section to get a lot about all the duty to go into recession. And then the evening we do you general mission and reserved tickets. So if you happen to wanna come out you wanna watch you know the first game in the session that you're watched Dirk for gaming you recruited by Peter. Go hang out in that there Rick's custom decking and fencing. Displayed you can and making it back to the same exactly do you had so there's a lot of options out there you're taking cholesterol it's become dot com feed all or. You buy all tickets at the door. All forties to the event. And you said this earlier in the interview that some people actually do come and watch every game. Yes they do it's amazing. You know it they'll probably applications because it is a technology news it's so hard bench after awhile blitzer. Yes. That would bleacher that we we keep it back in the route so. They don't bicycle. Event shall we go at it should be around that but yeah it's. There's a lot of basketball lot of fun to be had you know a lot of commotion in between so. You know how can you catch teacher you know could Nike product could be given out so a lot of things going on. And as slam dunk contest to. Yes expression point of personal slam dunk contest. Which will be Tuesday at 3 o'clock come out of that one I mean. Culture media it is that event right there is word at all blows up he can go on to. I think elected to have a contested three dead last year's that a kid want it jumping from the free throw line. You know we've had multiple guys jump over people they know. Ball being thrown from rafters coming down and being dunked. Very very creative kids from all that and highly athletic so that's one of our favorite events around that. Analyst rob invitational second place at liberty high school we're toe and maybe if we don't know how to get to liberty I saw how we get there. Sure we're gonna have from just go like five outs you have a 26 and keep going straight he'd take the Corning has passed saying that it's right there off highway 26 you know basically across from Hillsborough stadium. You take that first exits to corners past and it's our right their immediate left. So it's very very easy to get it from anywhere especially during that time not like traffic is being. In between or after Christmas and the before New Year's so it's very easy to get to burst upon in a parking out there. You know it's great treat placed to what article about ball. And jealousy in the dates and times civil Schwab invitational. December 27 through the thirtieth. Wolves tip off at 9 AM on the 27 in addition every single day and we'll run game all day all the or April 10 PM at night. Awesome to be great tournament.
