Very safe for kids to ride their bikes and walked in their neighborhood. I'd like to welcome to the show Leann Ferguson she's the safe routes to school director other Leann. Now before we started this interview it's gonna marine meeting here in Portland is again Durham man do I take the public transportation to work as you couldn't rent a bike. I realize dries billions having an aunt died and by the tragedy that thing. Also wanna talk about today is bicycling in essentially giving exercise for kids around the Portland metro area. So what is for every kid. Per every kid is a had cartilage and meteoric unity in all of her. Over at 3000 people. And at city's school districts all working together to do lab makes safe at the school for every kid in the metro area. We're fighting to make walking and biking to school reality for every kid I married in because too many neighborhood lacks faith I thought. By Cleveland crowd blocks. And we know that when it's safe convenient and fun to walk and bike or catch ended with a Glock our kids act healthier and antique and they are. And you can't find out more information about our coalition at our help these streets it's dot org and but the fire as a pretty an active group of people are really trying to educate its. A decision makers about it as political. And encourage them to do find funding to help to help make those. Street safety improvement that we need around school. How did you get this organization started. And that this is a coalition and actually work for an organization called that bicycle transportation alliance and I coalition authority to college informed about. A year and a half about two years ago. When we started holding at community meetings there around eight out of school are asking folks what there at safety needs or are. Really trying to figure out some gold around it out to schools or our kids. I and we found a lot of our coalition members and senators and community meetings just the right off the bat Adam. Opal environmental justice. Upstream public health that community cycling center Oregon walk. An whenever I am. At Maine partners that as well as the is the American Heart Association. Though. Others. Coalition leading that we've met through the community meetings in the coalition has just grown from there. Adding he's he's like beavers and forest grows laterally and at. And Milwaukee and the political stakes about almost half of the school districts around the metro area. Are all. Nine under coalition. What do you mean by what do what is safe routes to school. Think the school is a program. That that combined education and encouragement as well as safety projects around the school. So education programs might look like locking pedestrians. Safety classes like second and third graders. Bike safety classes are reported that is dictated. Wind didn't actually walking on the street or underscore our bicycling on the neighborhood streets around their school. Combined with encouragement programs like lock them like physical they are locked in my calendar month to protect some of that. I encouragement program and we each. In Oregon and am then as each school community is partnered with this city or town mean whoever isn't. Tired of the roads around the school to help identify what I paid the barriers to walking and biking to school and oftentimes it's. It's crossing that needs to be am. But in a crop block or act gap inside Iraq that's really important that would open up a whole new neighborhood to being able to get to score that that's that's tied up with spill then. And getting those projects are done within the one mile radius of the golf. And we know when those briefings happened altogether or you can we generally see about a 40% increase and kids that are walking and biking to school. And I think as physical as really a combination of passes with. Programmed and it. Safety improvements that allow all but that allows you can still access the school by walking and biking and that take advantage in that. 40% increase that is really significant. Yes that's very significant one that puts. Then we're back in world of transportation funding. That that you that we would beat that kind of behavior change around around a program is is that pretty it's pretty wonderful I'm pretty great. So some neighborhoods and assuming are pretty good for getting around and some are not so good what are some of those other problems he said live across talks could be a problem what are some other problems. And as well a lot of a lot of areas and don't necessarily party have a walking and biking infrastructure. Like those things like I boxing crowd the box and bike lanes and it's. Now what are some of the steps that your organization is taking to try to get this going. What they found the school can do and asking them to dedicate their funding for things as fiscal specifically fifteen million dollars. And that the decision making bodies that we are working with is that match up count full and then aid transportation committee that decides how we spend. But some of our regional. A transportation funds that come they come into the military and and we are looking at that at those funds to be dedicated to this say about the school. How can our listeners help get involved. That is a very good cook then they'll. This is a great time to get involved beach. Public comment period so that's out of an independent talking about is starting in January 15 to February 15. And we are hoping to do a show a lot of support for safe practical during the public comment period. You know we have are planning a rally on January to when he ethernet and an eight school. And we have these really great colorful public comment cards that we are asking. Anybody can do two to pack up their friends and neighbors to their coworkers then it's are going to get 5000 of these comment cards. Don't go out and and then at a rally on January Tiffany April. Would love that they've streets remain near ahead and we would like to show our decision maker is that the safety and health are important to all of us. And now at the time to do it. NN we're gonna have information about for every ten and what they've as the school is are gonna have come cards to fill out there. The collecting comic hydrate now and then wolf dropped them off at the rally and then the following month we'll pick them to metro council and the transportation committee. So we but some some neighborhoods or does not as bike friendly as they could be or should be. I think we always do I think we can only be better. And some of them there are inequities in our transportation system for sure and we want to make sure that everybody is. Based on artistry that's there waiting in many and preventable. Death but I streets every year on and we would like. Frankly he could be a priority. And we. No. We would like to see some of the infrastructure that has and implemented and in the Portland area we would like this he's that done. Done better and moved higher and expanded. And all of the other cities around the parliamentarian to. To increase there there levels. Sidewalks and bike lanes and it's really strategically let let's make our streets safe for the people that need most. That certainly is great when you're going to go into any revenue to seems so room friendly like some bike there's bike lanes there's cross walks that's. It just makes you feel a immediately safer. Yeah one of our coalition partner is that without a fair deal and he works in Irvington and he talks all the time that being. Also PayPal that the only valid they're kids and lobbying and making around then accessing all the things in any event that and then you think she goes home to do fair deal. And she looks there on until late why don't I don't I have ethnic I want to block him like what might to dot AA is they don't like that like what I see in Irvington and and it doesn't and it and it seems like and it it it seemed like an inequity that walking and biking being able to access your community. You should be should be a right and that and we shouldn't have. How do own car and Peter act and how all of those other expenses we need to have other options other choices. So that increasing our capacity for people to locked and they completely is is increasing the choices that people have and they get there around town. And I think that that's really important that people should have options to get waiting to go safely. And whip and what it. With the tunnel that they have. I did you bill Bloomberg on the unity you said there was like in the fifties people used to walking and bicycle more. And remember when I was a kid may be when you're a kid to a bit but it seem like we've played outside a lot more. When I think things changed and why do you think they've changed. A really interesting element quite there like if I get at you and you watch them make that's going your kids to. Is I did. I didn't immediately I did not very op then. But and whenever I lock into there room to talk about it as critical op and one of the great things that I add especially at that people in the room are. Our all our all of an older generation. And and most of the time at least 50% of the people raise their hand and then I also like asking did he take public key and it's your first job at because most people had jobs before they had kept it light and I did he take everything propaganda difference does your group by and then. I did they vote again and I picked up and and that's. To get people thinking about what it was like when they award Ted because I think have a completely. Has really changed like they are more people and not in the metro area there are more people using the roads. That. There are more their mark aren't there there's more of a lot in this popular viking it just there's just more of every pain it's and ire. There's been any shift and people. What is really. So I don't think as physical as that it combines the education and encouragement apparently took a safety improvements so. Do you have any kids. And it's and it and it he'd like to get to the top story but I you know I don't think yet I can't type that could want them sediment and they'll let me swim in the deep end of that community pool because I got a patent that says that no blood and look them in the deep bench. The bicycling classes that that education portion of these threats schoolteachers did at that created. And vita and the usually feel more comfortable in them now bike in their community where it out that class that that comfort level would have never happened. So. To educate and encourage them programs. Combined Linda if safety improvement I have really where you can keep it heated and the that there are doing is it changing or are taking in this story that we tell I felt. And they they picture evident that the more about that outside walking and biking and taking the pulpit hatred and they beat everybody. So that should be that could be our. Our commitment tech community is that. And that we want apparently wanted to change they want to our community to be stronger and perhaps more than the other night taking care of each other. And I think that we can do that this is something that's absolutely achievable. We get definitely need to prioritize is bad safety and I transportation fund. And I think we be a lot healthier to. Put the healthier mayonnaise help Samsung and healthier communities that don't. But I was saying would be healthier in our in our own bodies and healthier in our own communities to. I have absolutely. Whenever Iowa is an. And whenever I was younger I was Pinochet as a kid I was other it's fairly and in in the insomnia activities. Just took a high anxiety cartel I don't know lack as the anxiety. I realize that they got old match. That exercise their. It's sort of my name. My main. But then again this thing ready that if I wore myself out during the day. I couldn't sleep at night to and being in cape town and the community that prioritize those. Walking and biking and allowed me to get an hour's worth of exercise every day just built into my day. Is a really in the city it's far from me the other on its normal level. Without having the U lake Griese anxieties and dumped out. I'm a product and all that I think that the threat from me that's really really important and I see it enact hits. Being this and all the time and not really having any any way to get an idea out. And we need to be able to provide them the opportunity to go out item played an access. Places near their houses that there that. That Japan might not be able to take them to. Mean if if if if they can't get a ride that they can't then there's so many barriers to getting places that we can create these streets so that Adams. That our kids until they can access the world around them. And a healthy and a healthy and they play. He's organization looking for volunteers little. Yes absolutely I had and it's our coalition is looking Vermont did the helpless and it's. I opened are rallying I'm on January 28 as well as. Getting did the word out about our comment cards and it's. That making phone calls and talking to people are saying getting folks generally excited about they've cut the school. The more people that we have that are excited and vocal about the press at school the more chance but has to get that dedicated funding for these. Really necessary program. OK so what is nexus three big questions so boo what is next for safe routes to school. I know I'm as big as the school not only. Is that typical not just aren't that bad metro area and many of our partners are are in this for the long haul we think that every hour we know that every need an aura again deserves. To walk and bike to school and access candidate school. The know what I plan is that not enough but the metro area at that. Every every category indicate that we think we think that this is really really important. Is a kind of a Portland fingers that isn't kind of everywhere. I think for the good actually. Me at a national movement. There was some dedicated funding at the federal level and 2000 antics it's. That started a lot of big fronts fiscal program there around and around the United States Oregon being one of those as states that that is it best fiscal program. And overtime that funding has gotten smaller and smaller and so now we're looking for action. Now local advocates like it's targeted coalition are looking for and local funding to help keep it. Very very necessary program going. And I know. Several other organizations around the United States and are also working dedicated funding that they trust the school including a pregnant in the state of Washington and and Illinois a I just I think someone sitting in that. That there are growing mountain. Growing movement in places like Louisiana Minnesota asks. Also. In Oregon is definitely not just a violent thing. There are safe at typical all either partial think about the school programs are bits and pieces that they present what's happening all over the seats. And and bend and Redmond to end next. This game is and tiger and Eugene in Ashland it's. In Albany Corvallis like many many other bad. Of the cities and Oregon are all working towards. China makes it possible for every Ted. And as an advocate Rick seen that Adam that. Dedicated funding for think that the school is really how did that to happen and that's where that. And that's elite seed really viable program but a lot that they hate it seemed happening.
