This is metro scope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program under blocks of one of the great organizations in the Portland community is Albertine occur. Albert Jimmy Kerr has been around for many many years helping people with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges drive this time on the show we're gonna talk all about Albertine occurred and the race for the roses that like to welcome -- Beatty longtime volunteer with. Albertine occur hi how Lauria a great thing Q thanks for having me sure so you're a long time volunteer work how how long. I can volunteer Albertine anchor for nine years and yes this thing this now since 2007. While what drew you to Albertine occur. A virtue occur really spoke to me because of the vast number of programs they provide for them or in community. That's a foundation and that started here in Portland to and serves are the unions and has to end. Doing amazing things for over a hundred years so that really really spoke to me. Now. I think all of us have heard the name Albertine occur but maybe aren't super familiar with what. You guys do what health Telstra what Albertine occurred us. That's a really great question number teen occurred just so much in action meaning he found they really stand for. Providing programs to help strengthen families come. And communities helping children and adults with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges through a variety of programs. I'm include dean say gesture care early childhood outpatient services. Supported Levine. Told group homes inflame an Indy services. Youth and adult group homes it's really really a broad number of programs that provide. One there were really excited about is the Park City program. Which actually builds. The medals that we give out at race for the roses and mania of health. Then members of that community will be participating in the race this year that's very cool. So. That over to occur has been around for quite Suisse that over a hundred years right yes and there are actually you know is Cheney is Mason's parents are most people are familiar with the courage ours and that's actually part of Albertine anchors history. Nano who have a kind of threat during that you have to go to Tibet. That's really great so since 1907 that's a real that's a really long time very very long time definitely how many people it does help team occur serve. Is in the Portland area. And children and adults in their Stanley server over 2000. And has started very small. Many years ago but has grown significantly. And there's a number of volunteers. Involved sounds over 73000. Hours are dedicated by volunteers. And sit and there's over 6000. Generous donors in community supporters as well. While that's a that's a lot of people lot of volunteer hours that's great and no the only thing I know about Portland in southwest Washington this whole area. People just love to volunteer love to help out definitely definitely are you still looking for volunteers there's always more room for Roland. Absolutely Kerr has a lot of opportunities for volunteers one being the race and we'd love to have volunteers out on the course helping us support racer is and walkers and runners. You can go to Albertine now. Occurred dot or ink. And click on get involved in the air as the list of all the volunteer opportunities there's things that are. Just one game there's ongoing volunteer opportunities hold hands faster array of ways to get involved. Near a super volunteers who you know you know how to do it I mean I love to volunteer for our look at the so you come middle looting at race for the roses when is that coming up recently roses on April 17. It begins and I act or in convention center. It's an amazing race because we have three distances so really anyone can get involved there's a five K ten K and a half marathon. Runners and walkers are welcome. If you bring a stroller that's welcome in the five K only just for all racers safety. Hands were really looking forward to how mean is many people come on as possible this year a 100% of the proceeds for the race go directly to programs here in Oregon to surf the populations even talking about. And the thing that's amazing about her is how efficient the organization is 91 cents of every dollar go directly to programs. So it's a very efficient organization in terms of freely provide lean. Every dollar towards service that's amazing that's that's kind of than usual were really really proud of definitely. How many races are you expecting this year. We're hoping for 5000. That's a good number yeah I really comfortable number of the thing that's really awesome about our races since it starts and finishes at the organ convention center. It's a dry a warm place to warm up and leave your bag and have the ability to use real bathrooms which is a real especially for racers are used to and part of parties. And we really love that fact it's it's a really fine racy can run you can walk can be really invite you bring your friends and family. And your team from work. And just get everyone and everyone out there participating in it's it's a good run. Great race and an amazing cause how do you sign up for the race. Sign up for the race by going to Albertine encourage dot org and you'll see you race for the roses there and you can also go directly to the race web site. Raced for the roses dot org and you can sign up there. Yes we can send them directly there and we really love the fact that race for the roses as a pro and tradition this is actually her eighteen year. I am and that course is really beautiful running throughout downtown parlor and one parent love about the half marathon is that you get to run down Broadway. So that's really unique a lot of racism parliament not Broadway which sank here a lot of the book about claiming they amount should never ending pill but running down in his don'ts on the much better than. And I it's epic. And yeah like I said a special part of this traces that a 100% of all the proceeds benefit local pro and nonprofit Albertine her. And she found that your 21 an older at the finish of the race you can in the most Celek has a really fun lane a celebrate and that's a nice little finisher absolutely in addition to your mettle of course and your rose. Grapes. A little bit ago you mentioned that bringing a strollers OK I know import owners love their pets how about dogs. We prefer not to have dogs for the safety of our tracks that make sense completely. Now you're runner. I am which which part of the race for the Rosen you going to be doing this. So I did the size came last year and every year before that I've done half marathon sitting imminent mix it up this year and try to attend K decided to experience. As well. Actually you are on the same day is my daughter's first birthday party so I think hey Aaron. He would be good said run that and hands get home and celebrate with her her middle greens actually rose and my due date last year was on race day so has the scoop her second year participating I think she's gonna do the five K with my mom this year. So you did the five K on your duty last year and yes and it. You are dedicate that yes that that's why you're homeless super volunteer for over either Carter thing Kia I have to sit. Is there anything else we need to know about the race. I think you need to know that it's the race not to be missed their registration is still open we'd love to have every line come out and supporters are really really good cause and be a part of the great race. In his still looking for some volunteers for the race is absolutely yes we'd love to have more runners and more volunteers cynic and you can go to our Bertini occurred dot org and click on get involved to find out about volunteer opportunities that's great that's that this is the bill big fundraiser for a which can occur yes it is absolutely. Last year. Reese and the race raised to more than 200 need thousand dollars again and went directly Albertine anchor NASA significant amount of money that helps a lot of people in the area. And he is and when you think that. 91% of all the money raised goes directly to services that now proceed occur provides yes something that every racer can be out of a part of him. That's pretty great it's talk about some of the services that over to occur provides. Sure some of the main services thicker offers include short term residential care and so that's something usually around much since two leaks. And also Tony for accessed some mental health professionals and not for children with urgent mental health crises. And I am pro works hard to stabilize children in crisis and provide effective mental health treatment and then ultimately return that touts of their home. Or less intense on health care. There's also occurs Stanley resource center Aaron it's a place for families and our community raising a child with mental health and behavioral challenges to find support. Answers to questions they may have been gathers together for our activities and events. And there's also intensive community based treatment. Now would be some theme services for children ages three to seventeen. Our risk of being Manning a city in their home or in school third due to the mental health challenges that there working math. So those are just a few of the things that occurred sinner in our area are really important services. And then some. Some I guess. Inpatient and outpatient sort of things or some group homes and somewhere you can just come in and and have treatment over just a few days that's right exactly. I'm so what are some of the challenges specifically that people with developmental disabilities thanks. Really find mean. In insertion into the community enough it's another thing that occur help so it employment opportunities and and that's a part of their race that we're really proud of is found that part city mild curse programs. That provides. Time to work environments for adults. Dealing with a nominal disabilities and port city creates all of the metals that each tracer will receive. I'll last year was our first you're doing and it was a great success so we're doing it again this year. And several members of the per city team will be participating in the race this year as well. The let's make them super excited and yes definitely I was I was there last year visiting them as they are treating the metals and it was really really amazing to see the price and I am. And really dedication they're putting into trading almost medals nine they were going to to be awarded toddler racers at the thinnest. You say about 5000 racers look scored a few medals yes yes that's that's our goal this year excellent where where is port city. Chris city is in north heartland on Williams. So as the kind of a workshop is that it is yes it's an they did make a lot of really beautiful cutting boards. Which and they sell and the members pan am of the meaning that build them get to keep the percent of the net of the proceeds this is our son so there employing yes people absolutely. We're Camilo is cutting horse that comes from average city there's actually a little shocked they're okay now there's another. Really cool program called them art from the heart. Where other her them. Mem members of the anchor can needy. Are able to create beautiful art pieces anything from 1918 to this church. And then those are also sold had our from the heart which is on these Broadway okay. The thing over can occur really is trying to give purpose that's exactly exactly that they do. Yes it's really really amusing really empowering people that are dealing with tangent situations tell overture alliance. What if somebody listening it is maybe has a family member or know somebody who might need help how to how to they reach out number two Kursk's. They should definitely go to the website there's a wealth of of information available there are phone numbers to call directly. I would go to Albertine heard dot Clark Kent. Rick how did you get involved insert first volunteering with a over can occur. I heard Albertine incurred through volunteer match and I working sneaky. And make you really encourages the volunteer opportunities so I found her in there and I started volunteering in 2007. And I was dedicating my tying and and group home for girls. And Saddam was really amazing upper teens just to get a chance to come. Be a visiting friends and have an opportunity demands are so many young girls there. And then from there I John leans then race committing. It was the perfect opportunity to really get involve. Them in a race. And so lol I've been working in the Marcin Adam on the marketing committee for the race for the roses ever cents. Mountain. But this thing about the group home that is really Amy is seen as a lot of girls there haven't had as simple childhood like a lot of us have so it was. You know really enemies seen an eye opening opportunity to spend time with famine and just really build trust and get to talk to them about life and challenges they were having seen and provide emotional support. Unser just treating friendships with them. This really really meaningful to me and really really mean my passion deep for car. If it's through some lifelong friends to a felony theft money and you know one thing and we talk about a lot with race for the roses that. Katrina neither racist together stands together in her extremely grateful for all the racers and all of the volunteers to dedicate their time entire race. Kirk couldn't do all that crucial work in our community without. All those people dedicating their time and and dollars and we really feel that those who stand together with Karen are really helping us empower people. With developmental disabilities and mental health challenges and they're all members of our army the angels. It's truly a community of partners. Can really challenge the norm to create a society that has no barriers. Decision. In the last year more than 2500 children and adults and families receive services from her. And seek nearly a thousand volunteers dedicated a total of 65340. Hours tablet tinker. Significant yeah that's pretty amazing to think you should be very proud of nationality. Definitely do you think society is changing the ways they treat people with developmental disabilities as opposed to. What country you're certainly years and years and years ago but even in recent past. I hope so I think that there's been a lot of of awareness. That's that's come into the for a friend but I think you know sometimes it's hard to know how to help. So that's where I think you know dedicating time and donating dollars to her can be a part that you can really help your local community. The guy that I have. For me I don't have somebody in my family or media. Friendship circle. That has an issue and saw your name I feel a little bit out of touch him but getting involved developing occurs a great way to. Understand it and learn. Absolutely absolutely. And sometimes you know it's it's hard to know where to start and if you do wanna get involved so again I really encourage people to visit Albertine that. Her dot org and click on get involved and on the website you can learn about all the programs that there's something that really. Is meaningful to you in your life her. You know someone. That is. You know really being challenged swift. With Saddam on disability or mental health challenge and something if you wanna sign an opportunity that really. Billy speaks says that part of the organization. All the information is there now. To me more about the group homes are there several around the preliminary and so they're they're a group homes for youths and they're seventeen neighborhood group homes and there's also group homes for adults. There are 38 neighborhood based homes and all of those have 24 hour support an individual growth opportunities for adults with a nominal disability is. So in the group homes shares closed 200 children being served in in the adult homes entered into when he sects. There's also really fun program that we have that you means scene down by the wire friend called curb makes. And that's bike rental sir rest if you are down at a waterfront and you know within your friends mantown are you don't have a bike. You can rent a bike down there. And trees around the waterfront in the summer. And that provides jobs for teens in the area so we have come home 44. Terry youth volunteers that that spend time down there. That's pretty fund and a spring is here so it's still it's random hopefully go to red bike they know I'm holding it exactly. Live which part of the rivers that again. So that's a brain down and I aids. It's that time called waterfront so right down hair braid tying that giant neon rose. Yeah really things fountain or raped there. Well let that's really great in helping other Albertine occur all the same time all the same time excellent source talks more about race for the roses again it is coming up. When the weather today tourist who was raised in the roses on April 17. And and we have a five K ten K and half marathon. Teddy Teddy sign up for race for the roses. You can register for race for the roses at race for the roses dot org registration is hope then and until the day before the race. They're really great cause an increase race and it's it's a fun event we welcome everyone to come join. Our. Five K ten cane half marathon are all open. Even if you haven't changed you still have almost four weeks. So this poignant time to get ready for that I've case even if it's your first race we welcome racers of. All abilities and you could walk to run you can yes I clocks for the first time last year. It was actually really fun because they had to really take my timing pan. Enjoy me. Intel and sites and really cheer on the other runners and a toll but the route is that it to downtown Portland. Yes so it starts and finishes at the organ convention center Aaron on racers start out running over the proudly prints. And then as the roots are different based on the distances. It's mostly focus on the downtown Erie in half marathon does run through. Northwest stand on Nino and an up by barber. And then my favorite part of half marathon is getting to run down Broadway which is really beautiful and definitely beads and running cupped it. Rates in the middle of them yes they do the heart of downtown it's a wonderful parts. So it's great to have two duo a walker ray served something like that or they block off the streets for you and you get to do things that you don't normally carry into de L zero. If you're coming down Broadway you're going the opposite direction of our tax credit usually would be doing so it's completely different view. The return yeah I was really funny experience. I think in Iran mending parliament's tying down harrowing cents there and as critical path and people out on the streets and Barrios off how many times have you numerous. Anti and the race. Nine times. Yeah. If you're trying to convince somebody that they should come into it how how would you convince them and convince them I just telling them a little MR about car. And I contend today. I think you know a lot of learning racism participating in races is definitely something that the prank mean he gets involved went and I think knowing that. Ninety cents of every dollar they spend on that registration fee is going into programs. To serve community members that they share your city went Israeli really meaningful. And really leading them to have richer lives so typing knowing where. And in addition to that knowing that the entire. Community that puts on the resell all of us on the race for the roses committee here all volunteers. I think is also really meaningful that we did just because we need love the event and we love. We love friend even though we really love Kirk. Well it shows you you speak very fondly of occur to me how I really am really feel them and really strong Canadian organization I'm really proud of the work they do. Sears super policy. Think that you keep going into them and comically that forever I noticed it but but gave your part of the army of angels I wanna know more about the army of angels well. The army of angels we believe is what makes this community so army's scene it's the cleanest hands together and curt cannot do the crucial work without the broad community so part. Those who stand together with Albertine incurred to empower people with the non around disabilities and mental health challenges all are members army of angels. But she really used to the community of partners who challenged the norm to create a society. That has no bigger ears. If somebody wanted to become part of this. Really awesome army of angels how do they do that knew and what kind of opportunities are there. There's a vast array of opportunities from one day a volunteer opportunities to uncle lean you know similar to what they did with the group home he can be visiting friends. You can be a part of our race to needy. And so I really encourage anyone who wants to get involved to go to Albertine occurred dot org and click on get involved. Yeah I distill down and there's there's tons. They're the ones and and in a fire something for every well I'd I'd just clicked on as a bully on the home page out and elegant yet again there is anger. What I recommend. Well I recommend sit and gain an exists. To move the organization by participating in the race that's coming out on April 17 and demean the 510s or half marathons. Or if you don't feel like they seem volunteering ninth day in really getting a feel for the organization in the keep. Engulfed that's great he says about 5000 participants in the race. Which is really significant number raising tons of great money for Albert and current yes when you finish the race we alluded to a little bit egotism a most of us. Well see given across. So if you're 21 hair on her be sure to bring hearing dvd you have momma says for all finishers. In addition to that every racer gets our race team which you get at packet pick up. And once you finish the race he can't metal which is created by it our friends at Park City. And you hit a beautiful rose. Very nice and we also have great snacks and in music kin and are really fun environment after the race inside that boring convention center triggered party before and after. Yes second to none. I think south I think everything about it is the really really meaningful experience. I do think the weather's going to be perfect well you know it's funny this'll be my main here. And I'm knocking on my and it's never rains also in the within really really fortunate. Some hoping that's the case again this year and but if it does seem. It doesn't matter parlance is still beautiful beautiful place to run and it's a beautiful costs. No matter what the race for the roses going to be beautiful you will be maintained that the and we hope to see all there. We were talking today with the re debating a long time volunteer with a Albertine occur thanks real thinking as a pleasant.
