This is microscope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program I'm Gary blocks and one of Portland summer premiere events is on the way this next weekend it's the bite of Oregon and this time on the show I'd like to welcome Kathy give Lee vice president of corporate sponsorships for Special Olympics organ and Laura Kirk general manager for the bite of Oregon to microscope highly these. Hi Gary so the bite is coming up this next weekend August 12 through the fourteenth. Yes the very quickly at Friday Saturday Sunday. Right there in the heart of Portland on the water front downtown. Might as one of the summer times best events do you think. I like that thinks so elephant Everett and offer you this exclusives. I'm lying. Give me variety asks so Laurie is there is there a theme for this year. That being is Monday on an important Soledad Oregon and I usually. We've got a perfect lineup for a great summer party down on the waterfront that. We've got a good music. We've got them delicious food. They've got two great lying. Patterns and liquors. Even do fighter and a lot of beer. And prince tribute band Friday night. So nice. The scenario. We've got the act is called erotic city at the print distribute ban on Friday night Saturday night we have all vaccination. I'm really fun funk dance band. And then followed by the new labor which is an eighty's band on Saturday night and then Sunday. We close out strong with a crazy eight. Oh blind date global music and some project and she's gonna get down there and get funky. Then that's pretty good lineup of me of music along with great food and wine and beer and everything. But what does all of all the food and wine and everything is that all they are all organ type foods. We are very restrictive especially with our line is all of our wineries are from Oregon. There's some wonderful Larry isn't all over the Pacific northwest that we are very particular and just stood featuring a lunch from Oregon. The other is pretty awesome wind just right here. Yes and film institute for we have nineteen wineries this year. We had seven distillery. And then we have to beer gardens. Packed full. Eighteen to library with two different flavors each site different site area. And then we how sorry. Nice very nice so let's go 3030 year for the by an organ. Thirty dirty air is bad it literally is an institution and Portland people anticipated is. It paid. Culinary tourism attraction. The one you give me the history of the by toward that come from. I started what actually you know 3333. Years ago. And it was a concept. That was developed by one of our board members at the time. The Special Olympics organ was founded in 1972. You incorporated here in Oregon. And shortly after that there were several people that we're restaurant tumors on the board and they put their heads together and that love is something. It will benefit Special Olympics but get within our industry about how it got got got got started so many years ago. That the CI did not know until just now that the bite was actually started by Special Olympics organ. Yes they've been always been produced by and benefit Special Olympics elegant. Well I know how does it benefit Special Olympics or can. The proceeds from bite of Oregon go into our program for athletes and those programs are. I'm not only export program but also. Health related programs we have a program called Oregon team while Lynn. We have foreign activities and competition. That benefit people with developmental disabilities and intellectual disabilities. All year long so every week every day every month. There is something going on at Special Olympics we have 34 seasons which are all winter and spring or summer season. And we offer fourteen Olympic style forward pure athlete so if you are. An athlete and Special Olympics and you decide. I wanna go skiing. We will make it happen trio and I athletes never page complaint. So. If you want to. Be involved I think on the golf team trio local program local programs are county based. And they are the one that actually provide because Sheen. That sport equipment the venues. They uniform. They won't they won't get the athlete got out and trained for eight weeks to be able to compete in that particular sports. So open all the money they come into Special Olympics is going into the program to make sure that our athletes never pay to play. America so great about the buy it because when you're coming down. A 100% of the gate fee goes right back there a couple other bases for a 100% of the group did go back like our ice cream boost our volunteers were on. Also our average this throughout. All of our vendors can reverse engineers sales stay back a Special Olympics the organ as well as the boot he's a big pain. Oh it's a really great event and it really benefit this great. Absolutely that is pretty phenomenal and everybody kind of gives back. You know the old at the whole thing is about. Yeah bed when you're an athlete and Special Olympics organ we will provide you with no matter what your family's socio economic. Conditions are we will provide the athlete we're uniform code Sheen. Meal all transportation. Training and everything that they need equipment is if they need equipment. To be able to be successful. In that sport. Then when an athlete does compete in the Special Olympics where those Olympics take place. We have Gary we have competition. Regional competitions and invitational. By county to count me in that regional games that happened in each one of our sport season. And so they're they. Odd. The county may compete against each other and then they have their regional games which leaked out that wraps until culminate into a state game 14%. And move her around the state so light read that just recently we had our Summers big games in New York. In July. Now do they go on to nationals to. I think here there are athletes that depending on how they played. In a particular sport will be considered for a world game he'll let say games yet that's exactly how the process works. That's only maybe spring summer season has kind of wrapped up is that correct. It is an hour looking looking forward to our offbeat time and it's only a truthful. All would be we're going to be having heard all eight games at Providence park. And I did a good sport that are offered for the fall season are swimming. Volleyball. Soccer. And at bowling. Very nice. Definitely wants to get involved in Special Olympics however they do that. They would simply call our office and we would then direct them to a local program. Against the county based and these are all volunteer driven program. And that the athlete with deadbeat. After propriety medical if they're not able. If they cut for whatever reason don't have insurance or something like that. We also provide health screened for free so we can we don't want to ever have any boundaries or obstacle to participating in Special Olympics. Look at the benefits to the athletes get firm. For competing in just being in sports in general. Al hunt. Got sick from what I've seen it they speak up across accomplishment. For all good. Similar reasons that anybody would produce big board there they're training hard they're working hard they're learning how to be it he made. Sportsmanship. I he sent an accomplishment. And I won't tell you that you see eight. Absolutely. A huge surge of confidence in the athlete athletes that participate in the Special Olympics. Our. Much more suited to hand it in a position. You go on and be a valuable member of the community. For instance. Because that there sports training and they are confident learning how to be a good team made and how relationships with other people. They're much more suited for employment. And or going on. Further in school. So go do some of the we call it tool for life. So I think the benefits are endless. They're the leader unless they absolutely are like there's so many. Intangible things that sport provided somebody. And have the friendships do. Yet these cougar. Leader like friendship why would kind friendships that are maybe they may might be from different parts that they. But this is one of the it. The areas where our athletes talk I think consistently. They feel like they belong they feel like they finally belong. To count being that important that makes them feel OK and date. You know there excelling. Really fantastic. And it's all benefited by a bit attending the might this year which is coming up this next weekend laurels talk about the by tomorrow you're making me hungry. That's what the what do what I want to negates what are what Tennessee expect. If you think back at our idea being that you think back then Oregon restaurant. You think back to Oregon food cart. You can sample from her very. And Oregon bounty shot cable. We partner with an organization called Persia or again. Who uses organic agricultural products to create these high dollar play. That our attendees can improve and try one of each. They are diligent they're cool rate currently excited to. How little that our stomachs to go around and try some other slew. And there is to be here curtains throughout the festival. You can walk around I would see your beverage of truly. We have a giant. Lying and civilians. And block has different library is firm order again this specialty culinary products. And we have of course our chat stage the dining out there nor flash update the better I deterrent to the America. Our most popular program on the hot seat I would say it Iron Chef or did competition presented an orca grabbed trial. We have four different around where's Shaq who have won the competition from all over the state of origin. Face it head to head. Ahead into Leonard troopers to round than they see China each other and then the winner from that round basis last year's winner. To see who will win the title for this year. All the popular on that stage of the competition it started cheers that long ago called iron make college it. And it just like it counts we've got our tendered. For our local bar that there are slim drink. And being into the judge's. And B per day lit the match point at these times page presentation. At east of the ingredients. And a couple of better. Bad things get bad down drinks bad Dave. They offer competing against black peers. I would apologist champion credit here's titles I heard balanced popular since the. And it sounds popular and I want to know how you become one of the judges could very glad to get to sample all that food and drink that would be awesome. It is a lot of fun we've got two great judges sit here I'll. How to promote all lot of different restaurant. As we've got Shaq they got the bloggers did and her car radio personalities. It it's gonna be inquiry. Great competition to watch their retirement colleges. And the Czech Oregon presented by or that natural. The selling because there's lots of beer and wine in and some other liquors around is it open to families. It did open his family we have eight kids area. Nathan's Famous hot dog is their present team. They've got to Coney Island style game. They haven't told car and it hasn't. He ball and they need to hear. And are handling their little hop docs. And we haven't hit stayed over in that area within ninety shaded area preparing to be able to sit down. Get a little break while they're hit flash and entertainment on that stage. So the alcohol must be in certain zones were you have to be 21 to get into those areas. Not true not true very your alcohol around the event. Even more later came to playing T ball moved. So bring the whole thing and yet he how do you get tickets for the lights. You can go onto our web site I don't Oregon dot com. And after the top of the page you'll see a link Woodward ticket is. Could comment. And you can check out all of be different packages that are available for sale up until the day before the bites. Police team high eighteen will be again. Free to come on down with either you or capture credit card and come on it. And looking at the web say right now and is of tab that says volunteer you still looking for volunteers. We absolutely are our volunteers are imperiled U. Creating an event they work at the gate they work where I creamed if they help out at the shaft table. They're all over the place married. We would love to have our volunteers that the great way to come down the festival support Special Olympics or again. And get to enjoy me some of the fun out there. We're talking they hope our legal hit. Are volunteering is not limited to get the leak into the fight we have volunteer opportunities all year long it takes we have approximately thirteen thousand volunteers throughout the year. That makes Special Olympics what it is today. The evidence you've done an organization that of any kind can't survive without volunteers. Al volunteers are the lifeblood. Of the organization and many other organizations. We're talking to they would Laura Kirk general manager of the bite of Oregon and Kathy Gigli the vice president of corporate sponsorships for Special Olympics organ. I Kathie let me ask isn't the bite is a benefit for Special Olympics org and what kind of programs benefit from the bite this year. This year the benefits will be TUR sports programs and also to. Programs that directly benefit the athletes such as Oregon team wellness is paid self guided. I health and nutrition. Pay program actually cited health and nutrition program. And so they it. Proceeds from the bite of Oregon's. We'll go directly back in puke. Lodging and everything else for athlete. That wanna participate in Special Olympics. It's really takes a a lot of time and money to put all the stuff together that's it's it's great. That's so nice to see that that that in of an event like the bite can be of such benefit to a wonderful organization. Absolutely this year we currently have over thirteen thousand. Produces the Special Olympics so you can imagine that by providing everything that they need it kind. It doesn't cost a lot of money it's not the least expensive model. They had an organization can do you think we eat. I love what we do we love the athlete and it worried every ounce of energy that we have to make sure that they have a good experience. So thirteen thousand participants throughout the state of Oregon. There are JPMorgan weird daylight. Well so what kind of events happened throughout the state we've talked about some local events where else to happen. We also have a bird hit that. Gary you and I talked about the polar plunge before we we have five different venues by different site that I would polar punch it and we have regional competitions that happen all over the regional sport competitions an app and all over the state of Oregon. We have our governors Cold War. Which occurs in Portland in October. We also have. Do you think of our other we have our grips city's three outreach turnout which just occurred debit. That hosted by the blazers. So that just Kapanen and of course but I get worried. End. And it. Every day they're competition in our counties. Nothing like this and knowing all the time but we'll keep you busy. We are very thick that's such Cathy no longer even the Special Olympics organ donor but over here. That's also NC probably have some good stories to telecommute can you could tell some stories about some athletes that have just cheered you up. I have one in particular date when they first feared that are. Winter games that were open act out of mount bachelor. There was I was doing I mean in Corky being down at the end of the ill and one of the athletes that they received. He was coming down with all of course and Steve. Active mitigate that we had to get up and go back around the gate. And it flared it. He lived in the rule. No one can get up a coach cannot. Pass the athlete and get him back on skis and it has to be the athlete to get back up obviously you can go around it gave. And we were down in the end of the court and there with a crowd gathering ever count at all that people screaming and hollering and after an athlete have been down for you minute they are disqualified. But he did not quit this was absolutely the upturn in the Special Olympics. He was so determined. To get across that finish line bid. He would try and try and finally he got got back on at ease and came down and crush the premium finish flying. And we had probably a hundred people down at the end of the finish line he it was ten minutes or Hewitt. Disqualified. But we were in tears because Steve cross the finish line. And the crowd went crazy and the crowd went great. So that is an awesome story thanks for sharing now and it won't bow really nice. So live the bite of organ which is commute this next weekend starts on the Friday as ever learn. Correct you there at 11 AM. And eight inquiry into put the code to the great seafood down there. We've got some theater just tripled Kraft company. Did not live off the bat to that exceeded their going to be down there. Simply move their oysters. And he'll have and there's. There's just a lot a different kind strategies. But talk Booth. The German. To. Two years two crates we have creeps down there we have. We have just so much variety and again it at all or again working age under. And then of course we have the opt. Who commissioned the agricultural commission that will be providing product for would be shelf stable which is presented by pro Catholic and yeah if we had some amazing that Oregon blueberry commission that we have out of Rhode scary there. We have are going to hit that Oregon potato commission we have Dorgan seafood commissioner nor could be helpful. And it's just amazing created created that the organs shut stables. You know it's not any wonder that a lot of people are moving to Oregon. And we've got all this stuff going on is just it is fantastic here.
