This is metrostars and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program. I'm Gary blocks them. The children's cancer association or CCA do some amazing work here in Portland and actually throughout the country the this a momentous scope we're gonna focus on their music program. Under just go this time I would like to welcome back having guy or VP of brand for these CCA. And also Katie Moore she's a marketing director here at Entercom radio book to show latest high as a scary. So Abby let's concern with you tell us about the children's cancer association the CCA. A children's cancer association and was founded here in Portland in 1995. I family me his daughter had died pediatric cancer when she was Ivan how appears salt. All of our programs are focused on creating transformative moments of joy for his seriously ill children and their families so while there amazing organizations out there hooting research and looking for a cure. Our job is really to focus on the moments and how we can make a difference. For sick kids and their families break now. So for example our program's focus on music on French champ. Need shared resource says all of the things that are important to children and Cam Newton healthy worlds and become exponentially more importance than I am once they get serious pediatric illness tightness yes. How does all of this work early and do so many people involved great and then various hospitals in the city. Yes so our programs are all create charts on they are available and it Randall Children's Hospital at legacy and also anti American Children's Hospital. We worked directly. Didn't excuse me worked directly with social workers and child's life staff if you are the social workers on staff and hospital to support kids through their achievements. And we get referrals from them so we have four kind of core programs. We have the team up how mentor program which matches adult mentors up with kids who are in cheek man. I'm really giving them an adult friend who look forward to its inquiry for the parents and reduces. The loneliness and isolation kits in treatment feel when their confinement hospital. We have a beautiful home on the Horry can post called the carrying cab and where families extended family is really can go free of charge connect with nature and with each other and create memories outside a hospital environments. And we have a program content link. Which matches. Families waited essential resource so very unglamorous but very important things like. Tires and gas cards and hot water heaters and new reuse. Serious diagnosis says. The number on constant in currency in the last so there's a severe severe financial. On burden associated with serious illness and then our flagship program. Is called my music are Iraq's so we have a card in the hospital it's full teaching quality instruments ipads technology. And then we have changed music specialists can go room to room with a cart. And they play music for and wind seriously ill kids and their families so. All of our programs for children of all ages and all diagnoses and really. The benefits of the music program our charities stress anxiety perception of pain. And at the same time increase creativity self expression comfort and well being. So are teams were closely with the hospital staff to understand. Which kids are on the imperious floors throughout the hospital. If you would really be interested in some music and today. A lot of the older kids LT music lessons and all of the kids are able to check out of our instruments refrigeration. And can stay. We also have music in the children's emergency department at both hospitals. And then we have volunteer musicians can't at peace the program is called holly Harmonix and their just musicians are playing. In the lobby and the nurses stations through out the hospital which really infused the hospital environment with the healing power is. While I nap right. How that's not enough. How have you seen music changed the kids. A class I think. Anyone. His listening to invest and he listens to you on the radio regularly. I think has strong sense of the healing power of music and how it can transfer arm. A moment. It just coming into this interview actually I was in the lobby and there was song playing in the pretty much it can take you back you remember what grade you ran are your members that car that you're in New York who you are with Tariq. What else was going on in your life and you here's and we think that power to transform. Has a huge impact in hospital. Not only on for the kids themselves but also for their parents for that doctors mariner says hadn't. Just she kind of shifts that energy of wide is such a high stress environment and to really see it. And calm and I teach you some rounds. Know that they're picking up an instrument or having some to play music for you isn't fantastic distraction right. Absolutely and I think. Three do. Having done this program for 22 years we've really. Learned a lot I think that there's so little that kids get to be in charge when there are in the hospital so let. The way we describe our program is as kid prescribes that the kids get to really be in charge chipping action. They can decide do they wanna be an active participant can. Are they and healing more reserved and they sort of on sick can be played TU. And just kind of chill around in the way the human somatic you are watching me V or something like path that it's not. Being an active or passive participant isn't valued challenged one way or the other it's really upped the kids how to date healing in that moment. So there's an MITRE distractions there's a need for entertainment. I think with teenagers in particular repeatedly finding that there is also in need her purpose spray to have. Perhaps in deeper awareness of what is happening and that moment and younger child tonight. And so with those. Kids in particular there were really excited about the opportunity to do music lessons we've had several kids who learned how to play guitar. While they're in the hospital and that sense. A learning and skill building and purpose honest really. Gives them hope and optimized some. Even if they don't even if they're not aware of I'm not comedian mama. So that sinker. Super light and. Tournaments and how history. A lot of child psychology that goes into planning all this and how do you risk country come open these specific programs. Well how many are exposed really started I Regina Alice Hughes is founder and chief showing off his act. The children's cancer association that's really un retired now. And her family. Wind three extended hospital on honesty is when her daughter Alexandra we sank. That cancer and what they found to especially back and is there was very little arts and certainly no music programming in the hospital at that time it was really about. Surgery and Mendes and a lot of 20% in TV. And what was important to bear family. Was chilly and happiness and music and that they would take out there guitars and her mom cousins Arnett. Have a campfire and Alexandra metaphor conquest. Cannon fire and Alexander is random and what they found was sort of this hype Cyprus pact where. Other kids would come into their freedom but also families and doctors and hospital staff and me. Soft firsthand that power of music to bring people. Together and so that was really where. House to the Genesis of my music acts. A couple of months after and a contingent staff. We Tina Bryant and some other parents and dreamers around her kitchen table to really think about. What did a new organization who have chronic that would change the conversation. And re imagine what pediatric cancer care support services. Might look like for families like her. And so the idea of focusing on the moment and things like music and friendship and play them. That was really the Genesis. CCA. In is that Britain where our scum. That the end of the day Q is just wanna be too different. And they did not and it's pretty incredible. And to see. How resilient they are and even in the case of whether it's cancer wars cystic fibrosis or act serious car accident. How kids are able to still be cadence and how compatibility kind of comes three display content. It's Atlanta. Certainly what inspires me and I think what inspires our entire organization to do you. Now we're talking today with Abby dire with CCA and also want to reintroduce Katie Moore. She's a marketing director here in Montgomery he'll specifically for our station 947. And somehow 947 is involved with helping out CCA. Could you explain to us what's going on. Scary yeah this year and nanny for seven confirm a lot and really awesome shows we like to plan has many countries as we can't. And are you as always to put on the most fun kind of concert we possibly can. And do the most gay and that we can as well to sell it in about 2015. We start a crane met psychology and Asia and which if you don't know it's actually operate and and begun IA the members of Pearl Jam. And eight themselves really wanted to do a little mark dead when they were having their own concerts and start keen. I think they do a dollar per tickets sold to and any kind of charity they like they usually go through every year in and pick new charities each year so they can kind. Spread the wealth funds and bringing in money and counsel awareness to a lot of really deserving charities so. In 2015 we began Parton and and stern needed two dollars per ticket you are big summer shout every year we do one being some sham. And also artists in return member concert series which can have anywhere from five to sometimes fifteen under the theory that's a big one yeah we do as many as we possibly can. So our lab and yes so we decided to give away two dollars per ticket. Sold to those concerts to the psychology candy Shan and in Tony fifteen bail out of their friends to eat. And forgive my pronunciation. Epic demolished since below sacked. Partnership is the EB research partnership and that is for children similarly went back at life threaten mean. Elena says they have asking conditions that. Makes bare skin very fragile and it's really hard for them to do anything fun and McCain but do you think that's party now enter. Just claim their siblings. Sell them any went tee is back and nation that here. And then into when he sixteen me and supported the crohn's and clients and it's packed can't police this program which is for kids suffering firm. That allows them to be among kids that have seem reflection and and just have fun at a summer camp like all the other kids need county on. So this year. Technology foundation for what do you guys think about my music our backs and from being an important for so many years we were. Well aware and they get my carriers and children's cancer association. Especially the my music RX program having music we obviously love music and the they're at day seminar DNA and we we play it all the time whose cell added we patent they're wonderful and may be an excellent choice for this here's. Charity. To sell at too harsh for every ticket sold to our inspiration this summer. It's sad people go to my music Barack's and that is September 2 act edge feel to we have Foster the people and search sly. And it's funny mark faster for posture that people actually participated along ceased he spent stack music festival. What's Abby can probably attack a little known about and stuck. He act it's so cute without they have fat in artists will perform from their own bed and shoot a little video for. And days saying that they're performing in the air bag. For the children that can't get out of their own ads. So it's freely sweet and I noticed that market actually sent in 2015 may between fourteen in the first year in the first here okay. Sally it was just special to CNN Atlanta are performing artist has irony that apart and that he's TA program. And I think they had soft spot and her president. Program as well some. We used to lessen tickets available. But we did expect it to sell out in envelope so I would encourage you to this in 90% intact and get your tickets YUK and and I do you wanna take a quick minute to think some of our partners acts that were in Hebrew means. At a saner RC cola laughed and Aikman women and field and not keep his hands clean and instrumental in helping us and that's not the current. Very cool thing in the show is win September oh it sat Saturday September 2 cool it's adds field he had never meant as feel it's such a fun place to see it now. Summertime. That sun's coming down and we've got this beautiful blonde poll. And then she's a really special feeling and sound we expected to be quite. And we wouldn't look the like to have. Artists played well known artists like Pearl Jam supporting CCA in my music lyrics. It it's pretty amazing yeah and feel any better. To my music lyrics also has a digital program actually called to my music are ecstatic large and that's the program where we were close the part of the program are we work most heavily with art as snow. My music accent Horry isn't online extension of the bedside program knowing that our music specialist an hour car can't always be there. Several years ago we created this digital platform. And we have them. We on that website we have digital instruments he can watch. Videos. Music lessons and learn how to play popular songs that you would hear on the radio. We also have. Exclusive concerts on man and then the really cool thing we have is called song prescriptions. And those are short on cameras with artists where they talk about the music that always makes them feel great. And that sometimes they just talk about it the very best ones are they actually played the song and they're usually covers some other dance music's so. That's really clause so the idea. Fans talking about other bands music and they love and it's awaiting inching geez my music RX kids to new music that they. Most likely would not have come across on their own selves. We got to sound checks around town we go to music festivals. Around the country and film. He's on cameras with Argus. So we need a lot of amazing. Bands and artists outweigh and then re able to follow up with them during the year TC if they wanna kqed in popped in other things like that stock for example. On terrorism supersede pretty generous artists. Leave here in Portland Hugh have done and it shows four this for example. On James Mercer test last Friday night played what we college supper club Ceres where donors buy a ticket and it's. And dinner party in a cocktail hour and then intimate private concert. With usually a local musician. Very cool. I'm looking at the end my music lyrics are organ at such an interactive website gas click on so many things there's tons of pictures and videos and yeah Americans really think that. They GAO and we also have all of those. Song prescriptions are song our axes as we call them they all live on YouTube channel as well so UT dot com slash my music are racks and we are at over three million. RO complex process. For sure Camille Little bit more about bad soccer what some bits of videos little earlier yeah so cool bad second super fun now we are going into our forest here for and stock and is Cady said earlier it's an online music festival where bands played friends and as a show of solidarity is sick kids who are spending the holidays in their hospital pets. So this Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Has come to be known is giving tees tank. And it is a day of giving back after the mass consumption and Thanksgiving and Black Friday and small business Saturday and Cyber Monday and yeah is father Brad and none season different around. So we started this on for years now and in those he Tom the first three years we've had over a hundred bands participate. Most of the ants films them on their owns has sometimes it's just to cellphone videos sometimes they. Can't pretty awesome in creative and elaborately planned. We've had our headliners have included. I'm Chad Johnson he can and Sarah I gene changes in December NS four irons. Cheney earlier this war paint panic at the disk. Really just amazing incredible dams all playing from their beds. And then we also have kids in the hospital participate at the same time himself filming themselves without my niece correct specialists playing from that. And then we EU and have authors reading their favorite children's stories children's tax front. Bad as well. So. I'm giving T say all of the dance upload their performances T news there. Social media channels and invite their fans to join them and supporting my music are acts. We've raised over 95000 dollars in the a couple of years that we have in doing so. All the videos also lived and pets talked up comedy mean intact and on any time. And that's stocks this year is gonna be on Tuesday November 29 and Mary have and so am PD and special videos in the accounts have really let your guard to taking it content. Tina next awful this year. CC is just so clever and innovative. For kids that that's so cool we chant asked. It definitely shows. I mean we very much pride ourselves on and being a nonprofit that. Does it tested engine acts more like a business or creative. Shop we sort of understand that you need to build your brand to pillage your business and that everything we do at the end of the day is back hoping. Kids. We receive no federal state. Iron. And funding all of iron funding comes from. A little bit from foundations and corporate partners and from an incredible. Generosity average in owners and supporters primarily here important. Keller of the radio stations or 105 on the buzz has no Wednesday for CC and every year yes we've bridged with he guys for that a long time we have been lucky enough to be the beneficiary of the unity. Various concerts over the years holiday concerts Valentine's Day. But none concerts and we have a long time now partnership that he has been incredibly patient and there. Also great to be involved have you guys to. It's just it's of win win definitely. That's the best kind of went. Yeah how can people get involved with CC. If you are interested in volunteering. You can go to our website enjoy our acts without Warrick and there is an online form propelling out of volunteer application and you can move you know some people want a volunteer in a very kind of Frontline wants wanna waste have for example being a team up house. We're being hallway Harmonix music stand in the hospital. But other people want to volunteer and more of the social way maybe pull beer and Fastenal. And that sort of things keep on like to volunteer in groups to their business we have all kinds of Japan opportunities available. In the summer months in particular we also have tons of events I think there's probably an event every single week so if you want her inches did in attending an event you can go to. Joy Barack's dot org slash events and see a whole talent and the staying. Events that we have coming up this summer everything prime. Come. Dragon boat paddles with bridge city paddling goatee ten Mel is doing event if page and event for us. We have a concert coming up on August 27 out and it Penner ash winds signers. With just in towns are all. So it'd be an inch man. Concert in a wineries heading to tally paid leave will be on serving in beautiful dinner on. The and there's a spectacular. On fees of mountain high and it's pretty amazing ago. We have huge variety of events from golf tournaments teen who. On fund runs to you everything he contained where were really lucky to live in such. A community. And to send us apartment. The takes a lot of people to do that so volunteers does is necessary yes and volunteering on tour events is pretty fine actually yeah. And that it's a great thing to sign up with anger against Shaq. Cicada tell us more about the event coming up the money for seven of their volunteer opportunities there. I don't think that there any volunteer opportunities. For my if it is pretty content out early. Yeah. He can't still buy your ticket there rat 9% and got at them. And attack the content for its box to the people answers lie who are both so fun to me upstairs I expected these. Big summer dance party. It's during Labor Day weekend the kind that last crack it's summer you know last Barack yeah yeah for schools starts and went back to work. Yeah we're really excited Ed and I we said before we have two dollars per ticket sold going back to back touch foundation who in turn out he mistreat him my music directs. So cool what a great little marriage we have right. Yeah. But yeah. It is really fun to see artists like act like Abbie mentioned the secret is being and that stock so many of them are the ones that we played out tiny percentage. So it's great to announce that there as interested in doing good work when their own music as we are when we plan and shell. That's Superfund Superfund fee only go to the website to this this my music RX dot org is such an interactive and fun but they just to play. It's fun to play. That's the golf.
