This is a microscope and Entercom radio Portland's public affairs program under blocks. If your booty you're gonna wanna listen up because there's an all new bite of Oregon this year on the so this time we are welcoming Chad Carter Chad is the senior director of marketing and communications at Special Olympics or pay their Chad hello thanks for having me consulate things come and then. My pleasure were excited it's have a big event coming up and we're gonna talk about it yeah something that many people maybe don't realize Special Olympics organ in the bites. What's the connection yet doesn't really seem like you should be a pairing right but in fact it's been an amazing. Pairing for the last 33 years or are gone on our 34 edition of the bite of organ. And it's a fund raiser for us we own operate and produce the by each and every year which a lot of people don't really know. Ma'am for a long long time it's Dan now a mainstay down on the waterfront this year we've got. Some big changes coming most notably the location and the dates but overall the plan organ is a fund raiser forests and the money we raised from the event actually helps us. Produced the athletic competitions and events in fulfill our mission all year long so it's not just something that benefits people. For one weekend a really were able to take the money that we raise. And start to utilize it all year long four of myriad of different activities and programs that we run a Special Olympics organ that's a big undertaking. It is big undertaking. It's an incredible event and be for anybody who's. From here or moved here you've probably heard of it I remember going as a little kid and I and experiencing the in the manner of organ in. This kind of all that it entails. It's gone through a couple iterations in years past he used to be big music events but then. Portland's culinary scene really started to explode in Indian national attraction and attention and so we've been trying to make sure that we keep up with that. And so of the music at many years back didn't come quite is significant component we had some big name acts that we used to try and booking and appearance. The music is still very prominent net and a great part of the entertainment portion but. Yeah via Morgan in of itself is a huge undertaking. And it's something that we enjoy doing it's a big big. Amounts of work but in the end we think it's a lot of fun a lot of people love to come and enjoy it. And it's a great weekend just to kind of sit back relax have friends and family and enjoy some of the best food and beverages around town and this is a foudy tells. It is a duty tasks that we love the fact because people come out and they want a taste the greatest in the Baston what's new and what's hot. I don't know if you've heard powerful waffle. But it's this is if I remember correctly it's like this I think it's out of Hong Kong and it's imagine it gave waffled. Okay but instead of being a waffle cone is actually has air inside so it's kind of powerful party. I see turn that into a cone and then you stuff that with various treats the ice cream in other duties. And then EU consume the slate amazingly delicious treats its call awful awful and they are just exploding here in town right now. And and they're gonna be at night this year at Seton come and experience the awful awful crazed in addition to a lot of other vendors which noodles are making a little bit but the way you know we try and make sure that we can get some of the latest in the greatest in the most exciting and I culinary folks around town but then also this year one of our big themes is savor the seven regions. Organ is really kind of cut up into seven different regions and each region has its own unique. Flavor pun intended there and what they produce and what they create in terms of you know harvest seeing in growing and cooking and distilling and permanency all those kinds of things and so we really tried to bringing the flavors of the seven regions of Morgan all to one location let people experience it. All one time and I see the unique in different flavors from around the state that we have here. What are the seven regions of goodness okay so we have tested we asked the Portland yeah right we have land O'Malley. We have southern Oregon and eastern Oregon and central organ could river and the gorge. And then but sees that at six raid and I'm missing one. But nobody eastern orient Pacific coast to coast just doesn't forget so close tough but yes and the coast and so each one of those areas kind of has its unique. Set as soils and everything and so the folks who live there kind of create. Great food and products and beverages based on that so we're really excited to bring all of them to the bite this year the other day you never really tell where something comes from when you. Would like you'll Lemmon valley wine hidden four or obviously seafood from the ghost exactly Andy you know there is all that's kind of the unique thing about organ right in Indiana a lot of states might have different regions and stuff but. We're becoming so well known for our food and for our beer and our wine and now distillery is hard just becoming an of the next evolution in all of that. And so being able to highlight and showcase all of those and not just the end product but. A lot of the products that it takes to grow or to create those food beverages. Is really something that were excited about this year and and we're working really hard to try and make sure that. The entire state is represented and that when you come and enjoy the buy your also enjoying the best of what organ has offer. So what can we expect at the point this year with slip moonwalk in the front door. What's gonna attempt this first well I think you're gonna Wii U is currently you aren't ready or you're gonna notice a big changes and of course that's the new location. So for our entire existence we've been along the waterfront right there Tom McCall waterfront park but this year we are moving we are now at the rose quarter but so were in that amazing space between memorial coliseum and the Mota senator. Over on the east side and were really really excited about that most notably because. If we have a real big heat wave like we did last year. A memorial coliseum in the late afternoon casts an amazing shadow over the space so you get to be outside and enjoy a that army knots but you're still cool there's a nice little gentle breeze that comes on through and so we think that. And top of not having dirt on your feet anymore there's built in infrastructure for seating and just being able to really enjoy the experience. We are so excited about that so you first why in the gay you're gonna notice the year and an entirely different location the minute I have been transported across the river exactly and the not to mention we think they getting there's going to be a lot easier as well because. Does the space. Is that the confluence of buss tried that and streetcar and Max and streetcar lines. You've got par five dollar parking in the garden garage right there footsteps away from the entrance. You can watch you can bike or have I parking available for everybody. And with the development of the east side especially Deloitte center there's so many more people in that area that didn't used to be there is so were really excited about bringing something to them. And in addition to welcoming the entire metro area to the events we've really been getting there's going to be a lot easier than it has in years past. And so that hopefully will be something that people enjoy as well so obese in the General Electric different. But once you did on sued the very get to the events and start experiencing you're gonna need to get. A lot of great student restaurants there's folks like blacks are grill which was recently written up as one of the best in town it's a food cart. That is transition team are trying to transition into a brick and mortar and so they are gonna be on hand. Serving up their food city slickers as another through card that says getting some pretty big notoriety of dollars is a restaurant from eastern organ that's going to be coming over. I mentioned powerful lawful and if you've been to. Trailblazers game recently you might as hid out in 1920 sevenths Morse. So they are me and dessert that's inside the notice senator. And we've lowered down outside they ought to travel far but they're coming and they do these incredible. So more it's nothing I mean yes it's like they can't fire. But with some taste snake you just will knock your socks off the wire smaller so. On fire her I think her thoughts that a trick question I don't think sass than we can the we EU should as a great question and I think really has to do with simplicity. That the bringing you back to a time when you were a kid and and remembering that sound that just kind of communal feeling of being with family and friends and being able to bond over a bonfire but as you mentioned when we're talking about the coast to coast is such an ingrained part of who and what we are here and that feels people go to the Oregon coast and they experienced. You know everything that's great about that but. A bonfire and some mores as part of that experienced so I think so many of us can recall growing up in being able to do that so when we see somebody used creating match. Experience forest have been taking it to the next level. It's really exciting to see and I got a chance to taste than the other day. Very amazing and so I highly recommend you check them out among everything else could not to be missed not to be missed off and of course we've got all the great. Wineries and robberies and I can give you some of those if you want please okay so some of the white last year or this year there are wonderful to some of the wineries this year we have actor Val winery which is we can call our house winery this year we also have Lemmon valley we have art and wine maker winery in hard pressed to winery who will be there. And then just a couple on the beer side we have stream which I don't know if you're a fan but Freeman is amazing they make amazing beer. Out in the Columbia River gorge which is fantastic for George for re coming in from the organ coast. They're providing some stuff I called Arab during from central organ and we have ordinance brewing NN Portland cider company to have towns cider house and I just a couple we have probably a dozen more who are gonna be there. So you can go on tonight Morgan dot com and get a full list of not only the buries the exactly what they're pouring on site. So. It's just a great experiences you Connie get that full flavor of the states because of all these different breeze and wind reason and vendors that are coming in. And you get to kind of just put your taste studs and let them explorer for a little while. It's cool that that food carts are becoming part of this because in some of the food carts around our they're doing such unique things they are. And I don't think you can told the culinary story of Portland now without credit cards I mean we've basically gotten to that level I think that's what's really exciting. Not only for us but for. Folks who media and incoming to the byte for really long time and there are a lot of people out there this is like their summer staple every year and so we are continually trying to build some new ideas and new options for them and so the food cart story. Is something that I personally I'm really excited about this year because there's so many varieties of them out there. You have the traditional food you have to the the sweet slight 193 sevenths mores. And they all have a different kind of approach to what they're doing and so if it's food and if it's northwest based food they've got a unique spin on it. But if it's food based from elsewhere they're bringing a northwest feel to it so like black star grill. I remember correctly is like south African food so the spices and the flavors are just amazing life and so you get to taste I hear and it's coming with a small infusion of the northwest and so. I think that's a really exciting opportunity in the late ascend through cart story is now as much a part of Portland. As anything else. So it's it should be a lot of fun Denzel and loosen currency start out as of the small food Gergen and they become a brick and mortar to restaurant exactly agree store jet Alain it's in were seeing it over and over and over and there are couple who. Are on that path who will be at the bite this year. And part of their participation is that they want to help continue to build that. Sand base for that because you know the one. Our food cart situation has not food truck right we have those pods around town and you kind of date they're stationary for the most part. And so they know they're working very hard and mom are coming to the bite to help kind of expands. Their fan base and help expand cannon people getting to know them. And maybe lower than to their current pod but also help them develop that's a possibility of going into a brick and mortar. We're talking today with Chad Carter senior director of marketing communications at the Special Olympics orient. Who produces includes on the bike every year which is coming up very soon sort about the Dayton as the day for the boy yes that's Labor Day weekend this year September 1 through the fourth C of four days a common sample and taste and enjoy and set in just have a great time. And and so with school being back in session earlier than they used to be. We know for a lot of times people are gonna be now in talent and so we think that weekend is a great weekend for. Families and everybody just to get on out and come down you can come one day you can come for days and just experience everything at the White House offer. Is the Iron Chef organ competition coming back this year it. Certainly is yes we have a great competition this year as I remember correctly is the winner of last year is bringing his Su chef is going to be the winner for 2015. So we have a lake and a team to beats up up up there. And in fact that the competitors for Iron Chef organ this year we have Josh door tax from mosque he's the winner of top shelf at the Aslan culinary festival. And then we have George Morris. The boasts porous I think I hope I said it correctly but he's the winner of top chef at byte of bends. And then we have Al Hydro crews have no vote he won Iron Chef Eugene Nath who seem Eugene. And then Billy blue sure. Seven feathers is swift he's with seven feathers casino resort now they he's a last year's winner so he's coming back he's bringing its funny fifteen. A winner with tend to be is sushi asked and so it that's going to be some tough competition going on the stages of Natalee happening throughout the weekend Friday and Saturday. And then we also have the iron mix all just competition going on. Since you wanna see bottles flying through the air and bartenders doing spins and setting up incredible tricks on the stage. I mean I wanna check out the iron X dollars competition as well do people get to sample what the iron chefs and iron make cell phone to serve or creating. You know that judges do sell an unfortunate lead there just isn't a sheer amounts of food for them to prep than an hour so be able to city of widespread samples I do think they might be able to sneak a few out into the crowd thought or at least the NC might be able to do that. But primarily it's it's for the judges to sample and then award the winner but the great thing is is the chefs are so welcoming and accommodating a lot of times afterwards. People come up and say hey you know it did tell me how you did Dow lower some your tricks of the trade up there on the you know what was the secret ingredient how did you decide to use it in. You know so they're so approachable which is amazing out of folks really gets a walkway maybe not necessarily promise with a sample. But with tricks that they might be able to take home and explore in their own kitchens and they're so fun to lots old they are and you know it's it's hard core Leahy you've gotten your set amount timed in the you've got a secret ingredient and they're gonna use you gotta stocked pantry. And yet to come up with something right there on the spot and not only nine you're doing in front of a live audience outdoors and kitchen you're not familiar with for so I just can't delay on numerous layers of the challenges there but there are so amazing we've been doing it for so long and every year they just produce better and better results we're just really excited at. To kick off the event with fashion forward and again this year. Are there some more culinary events happening during the Leo we have a military throw downs of the Oregon National Guard is gonna be providing some of their chefs and they're going to be doing some fun things up on stage and a showcasing nearly a one it's like to cook in the military I am doing some of their personal favorite recipes or we also I believe have any food cart cut costs of some of those two carts are going to be getting out there and showcasing. How they make some of their favorite dish is in India will showcase he's there are great culinary techniques because. A lot of times you know they're back in their car ego window when you order you can all get to see what it is that they're doing or how involves. It is to make that dish and so they're going to be putting some of that now on display this year. I mentioned the army psychologists and we had a couple sued demonstrations that are to be coming up as well so. It's a great opportunity to see you kind of learn while you're consuming C go get your favored by. You can take up a few tricks of the trade they may be you can take home and explore yourself. How could we get tickets. Tickets I Morgan dot com. And their only they start at five dollars you can buy you a couple different packages if you want so there's like a date night package or -- doozy as packaged it comes with some not glasses a few extra tickets for the drinks. So you can do those online as well or you can buy a weekend pass for just ten bucks so ten dollars gets you in for all four days which is a pretty pretty great bargain. And again the proceeds go to Special Olympics organs so while you may think you're buying a ticket to the event you're actually just. Donating to an excellent Pozen a wonderful organization that benefits so many around the state tells about how the body does support Special Olympics Oregon or what's all involved in the sure solely a lot of times folks come into the eight. And they're excited to eat and drink in in bats what they do and that's wonderful that's what we want people to do but we also want them to realize that. The money they're spending is not only supporting the various vendors and restaurants and small businesses that are there that. A portion of it also does come back to Special Olympics organ. And we have thirteen thousand participants all across the state we have thirty local programs in the counties. And they are practicing trainer competing every single day we don't just have competitions once a year. But we do it 365. Or maybe 360 days a year from minus a few holidays an American. And I think that's one of the biggest step things that we like to educate people about because. They don't see the day to day activity. But what they're doing by a coming to Dubai and by participating in supporting and they are supporting those day to day activities because. For our Special Olympics organ athletes it's not just the athletic ability that they take away. We have a phrase a weeklong training for life. So when they're out on the field and there are learning skills about the sport but they're also work learning about teamwork the world learning about. Winning with grace that losing with grace the learning about. How to be responsible and reliable that they have a set schedule that they need to be there because other people and their teammates or counting on them. They learn about being confident and expressing their feelings and their emotions out on the field and and what is right and what is wrong and how to do it all together as a team. And what they then do is take all of that that they learn through athletic competition than than a translate in its into the rest of their life. So they take those skills and the incorporate them at home they incorporate them at school to incorporate them that worked and really becomes about inclusion because then they feel more confident. To partake in any things that you and I partake in and they know that they're gonna feel included in that and they're learning those skills to train for a license to be able to be a better person just like we're all striving to be. The other competition itself is important but the life lessons that come along with that. Equally as important absolutely and it's done through the prism of sports which is an incredible opportunity because. We have fourteen Olympic style sports that we do through the three seasons throughout the year we also have. Fall state games which are coming up in November we have winner state games is Jewish traditionally in March and in our summer state games and is our biggest. Competition events which is hosted in Oregon State University down in Corvallis. So they're using all of that to builds their self confidence which is really wonderful to see how to the summer games go. They were incredible it was our first year at Morgan State University this year we had that. Just not 2000 athletes we had 600 plus coaches. Family friends fans the organ state football team helped lead each one of the delegations onto the field we had our. Openings are game ceremonies inside research stadium. And so the football players were there we had several other student athletes from all the different sports helping to volunteer participate in other areas. And the community really turned out it was an incredible and overwhelmingly. Emotional experience not only for the athletes such as for the folks who were there to witness at all it was a lot of fun we can't wait go back. Who's in the ball games in the winter games are coming so yeah yours coming though right and yeah I'm not necessarily in the game throw style the winter is coming. So we ever fall games which are coming out in November and that is primarily our our fall sports are. Soccer volleyball bullying and clot expands so we'll be doing a lot of those who for a nano winner games we have of quite a few different snow sports including. Downhill skiing snowboarding snow shooting in a wide variety of other things so it's. A lot of folks either when reits are telling them about everything that we do they go well. I didn't know that. And so we're trying to educate trying to make sure that people are aware because Special Olympics is a fairly common and well known brand mobile and a lot of people don't understand also is that. We operate independently from the other states and so everything that we do here and organ stays specifically in organ. So the money we raised turns right around and gets funneled back into our local communities it doesn't go to a national chapter somewhere and then get. Distributed out. To others we do it all right here in self when we have thirteen thousand participants we know there are thousands more who could be a part of the program and so are always trying to you. Include more build the program so we can offer more and to comment you know really just to be able to provide for everybody who wants it. Tell how did you get involved in why did you get involved the Special Olympics are great questions saw in my former life I was in TV for well over a decade and IA. Was asked to you and see an event. Appetite of organ funny how full of the first things I ever did a special Victoria was the night. And had a great time with it really enjoyed it and so they kind of started reaching out a few more times. Asking would you be interested in and saying this or would you be interested in and seeing that. And I kept saying yes and kept saying yes and I just really really enjoyed it. And so I. Had been familiar with the organization for quite some time and when I eventually got out of TV and had kids in kind of smile lights started changing a little bit. I was looking for other opportunities and you had a great great thing going and then this one opened up and it's a mission that is so easy to get behind and it's a feel the impact down and you used every day. In some way get to see that that's what's really exciting about it. And so being a part of something where I can go and CE a the difference that's being made. Around the state feel let emotion and just be a part of it is something really extraordinary and just really lucky to be part that's sounds like you're you're getting a lot back from a I didn't after giving absolutely in. And I would challenge anyone out there food might have heard of us that never gonna part of anything that we've done. To sign up that SO OR dot org to volunteer and just come to one event and see. What it is and what happens are fun games and be a great opportunity. And you'll see the joy you'll see the excitement. And you'll see just the Shearer. Amazement that is our athletes experience when they get to compete and when they get to see their friends and when they get suit. Put themselves through new challenges. And meet and exceed the bar at every turn. It really truly is an incredible experience and I I would encourage anybody to it to give it a shot that's great so we have about a minute in the all the details on the all new vice this year the occupied okay. So new bike at the rose quarter and so you can go to via Morgan dot com you can get your tickets there tickets start at five dollars its Labor Day weekend September 1 through the fourth. I transit. All transit availability is there are some bus Max and street car you can park for just five dollars all roads lead to the rules were all roads zeroes in order this year an end so you can now bike parking is well you can watch we've got a lot of great exciting events or food and wine and beer and drink so will be there. And it's all about organ it's about savoring the seven regions of organ this year we couldn't be more excited and we are certainly. Excited to have everybody come and join us. The bite is always fun in in if you leave hungry it's your own fault or he didn't even in the right. Satisfied with the light that is very trail.
