This is meant to scope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program and during blocks of the boys and girls clubs are safe positive places for kids to enjoy fun and engaging programs at an affordable price. The clubs provided written programs to use cloned powering them with a sense of belonging and security and the boys and girls clubs of the Portland metro area have a brand new club opening very soon. And really hear about that this time on microscope on metros go today I would like to welcome me money Mohammed. You money is the senior director of programs at the boys and girls clubs of Portland metro hitter money. If money the boys and girls clubs have been in the Portland metro area for how long now. Especially in a video port also 1940. They. It started as a boy's club and men around the seventies or eighties we Adam Baker wrote into the neighbor and allowed for have him come to the plan and the mallet but boy you got trouble Portland metro. A little over seven years. That's awesome doing such amazing work too. So. What is the mission of the Boys and Girls Club let's let's familiarize everybody with what the bush can work you guys do. Absolutely I'm so far in how many people at sea bed the logo of the hand up an hour. At rec bring the boy I think broke up a America. I mean yes we are hard at the national brand. However we are only charter we are old enough I don't want C three nonprofit. On the city of Portland. I'm an hour mission if they power our young people especially those who need it the most to govern their cool book and show it carried engaged. Responsible community members. I'm in so we knew that by. Incorporating five core program married that we target. And some of the cure your. Some of the corporate primary care your leadership education and career health and wellness. The art. I'm sport business than rank and so as we. Provide after school program summer program me. Specialized program he seemed programming all of those things. We really are. Encompassing an inquiry in a broader perspective of what it means you. Who really regional people and allow them to. Realize their full potential. That we have you know the game room happy are probably happy contact room we have the kid. And all those. Physical locations are. Really helping young people working with caring adults to really. Bring out the best than them. I like the thing that we provide a social I think environment for young people. You really learn how light you know how to navigate with your peer groups and I don't that we care about them so there's a lot of things that happened in every club and I like to call it where the magic happen because. We we didn't do more than academic and it's a few more than just sports we need to do the wrap around and kind of the holistic approach to working with young people out. How many kids do you guys held out. Well. You know every year it at a very open it up this year where we're targeting around. Four to 5000 youth every year. Our club yet seven. Faculty club who won what fight for a total seven program than they range from Hillsboro. All the way down to oak grove. The north Portland in northeast on the course the rock where he's county area and our poor light is they'll never know who district Margaret got. And so. You know and all of those areas and communities we serve around. 4000. Not for 4500 you've done it every year. How were those locations chosen. So differently. You know Boys and Girls Club. I go into communities that we would that we got to determine. How I need it. But I need to won't necessarily always mean economic. Don't always me. That underserved I mean I need to be I'm looking like Canon city and how the city has changed over the years so for example. The rock we community isn't very we need community. How gentrification to Clayton north and northeast. I'm mini spamming moved out east county. And what we have found the day is that. Rock would area in the county area has the highest population of young people. And so for. Than anybody the history of how we even got kind of engage in this community of the rock would community which the border between Portland aggression. But because we author Bob there was a high need it you know. Folks out here that it necessarily how that happened. I don't know what that they had been there wasn't a community thinner there wasn't a place that kind of brought young people together. And so that may think avoiding the club in the city impressions I don't work out. You know partnership and really bring forth a throw up. Here in this community I'll begin all of our loved cool city of Portland and you know hopefully serve who later serving niche in everyone and their communities armed and really again providing young people and families a place to go. And did say but also hit resource group that we provide. So the Rockwood club is not quite open yet great. It is not people. It slowly coming along with. Buried them in several weeks that we will be opening. And we're really excited about it. So tell me about the Rockwood club that what's what's gonna be exciting that's happening there. Yeah outlawed when they met. I mean is is the partnership than in then that the community itself rock which community and well many nonprofits in the area I mean we have. They're outside and their new avenue for use other open. East school and don't anymore and so for me. It would be honored to be that director on site. I I I really gave it excited about partnership being excited about how can we all come together. And provide program and services for family unit. Under kind of how the Boys and Girls Club until. I'm couple things that make our club here rock we unique. One that we have a separate teen center. Martina weighing in my colleague at the west wing. That will strictly be for our teen population we should never brain and up. And that's unique none of our plan. Right now have eight but he teen section of the club if you will. I'm mark Bartlett to have a team room. I'm so that's unique is that we've actually designated an entire spectrum of mark for the teen population and begin speaking to the rock would need of it being the highest youth population. Community and in their region. And I Italy. You know with the partnership we also have a they convention remarks level Al they'll be leave without by new avenues for you. And they served a very best lies youth group homeless youth. They do what I'm used that have been exposed sex trafficking. And that they bear case management and there work that they do is very specialized but also very much needed. As a community partner and and being able to provide those wraparound services for all you and that there are on the night without it well and then. Right behind our building right next door is open. PPL a alternative high or charter. Part of public people however they've. You don't have really created a very I think that's rate of graduation rate up but again there. Population. And what you know people Italy was underserved or. Maybe war that people in that traditional. Sports betting that have come to open even have been released that's what does that fool. It seventh through tenth break right now so again. Literally within a hundred feet each other we have all of these services available for our youth and family there but that bat right there. Is what makes Iraq would club. Very unique and also. My aim is to really show how true partnership can happen in the community and how nonprofit come together. You know I worked together at the end of the day help families and enable them should be noted that buoyant and get all their hearts that they need. The rock club since pretty amazing is that one of the larger clubs in the city. It is that the liberal. Under. Housing feet I think it is that I compared to the blazer Boys and Girls Club on in okay. However it does look bigger people and that's just I think due to the bench the high billing. In the game I didn't everything but yet it is bladed glove in Iraq would our neck and neck you know in terms of the largest side. And windier and windier expect the Rockwood club to be opened fully. Yes we were opened October 9. That is our official programming they were children will be in the club and we're really excited to be able to service. You know on the community I would even add new and their note to this community we we serve. About for a wee bit in port district the school district that we have Reynolds. Than any of Gresham Barlow. PPS and I believe David I live. And that ball in our surrounding areas themselves. Three hour we've we are excited you know October 9 that about half and we're gonna have children in the we're given a high fives in. Really making them feel. Well them and making sure that they know that this you know this building belongs to the community and belong to them. Sosa like a big event that's happening to the community in the community is really embracing in Iraq would come. Absolutely I mean and the history. Before that. Became you know alliger groundbreaking. There was the Powell since they're the police athletic league. Off the white that in effect inning to leak them. And that's what. Mean nothing closed for at least four years now know that the community hasn't had. Bad backs community you. You know organization where children can come and it. Eight you know not Bergen a backer come in and issue who looks. You know on a consistent basis and does that. Yet we're filling that void and were. You know hopefully hopefully you know people in and families and partners we're Fiat doesn't after that and then the at bat that addition to what's already been happening in the community. You know to change. Some of the trajectory of our young people. We're talking today with the money Mohammed senior director of programs of the boys and girls clubs of Portland metro should tell money tell me how kids get involved how kooky kids get into the clubs. Sheriff. You know basically. Walked in the door to the that it comes to our. Our club during our program hours we will be opening for youth of from du thirty that the 230 Monday through Friday. Parents we'll come in before those hours or half full time staff on site this lineup. But then I think candidate claim deed note that. To be a member of our planet's 250 dollars a year. We do provide. Scholarship and payment plan. As well we don't ever want finances could be a carrier. For children and our family to be apart so. That they really conversation. With the club director or are you can tell me they're the manager. And after becoming a member. All of the programs and activities that happen in by the club bark free. The only additional. I Kot that would happen what we call our specialty programs so. We will be offering and our athletic programs out here and that he springtime. Spring of 2018 are here rock lynch mental goes with. You know athletically and things like that have an additional feed to it. But again 258 year for. A child be a member and I will say that you know we always are looking for additional don't donation there to help. Two. Kind of the climate scholarship fund that we can't car ride on our club in our club we experienced two members that may not be able to afford. Back I. Tell me about the typical kid becomes or do they come like in the couple times a week every day of how often do they are they come into the clubs. Yeah I mean you know. I mean my previous glee club director and though. Kind of pulled off that history because you know our Rockland community. Will be new cut that well economy in that bad but you know it ranges you have. Five time you know a week. How come everything what day date for three hours. They are good ideal club member they are here. Anyhow more open and then add as you know you get older. Typically high schools they they cut their attendance drop off a little bit but but we prepare for that enough. Hello we look for our maternal the teen population they get busy they're sport they have you know. Different classes but there and and though the teen population kids look at maybe a couple of times a month that they come out. But. What we don't have a attendance requirement and that's one thing about being a member of the club at that you know what you're remember you're always remember. And so. You can sign up and you can have fact that we once the land quite the year meaning it really. Is dependent on the family in the child so but we will have. I am sure we will have a regular event that are here every day. I think they're gonna make those connections with art back in support of the bill and you know really. You pick eleven and bill like this is their home. Can you tell me what sort of impact the boys and girls clubs all over the metro area among youth and on the families as well. Well what else I I tell people I used to work for more than gut level Portland everyday and that is that. I'm not a cliche that does that. A real statement I. Border raid in Portland and I have seen. You know young people come through our doors and whether they're here per year whether they're here for eight years. You know just putting a mile mile per will face some of the small things that we overlooked as. You know my development I'm week. Given how they'll buckle life but what we get to see everything holiday as a young person. You know being happy when you walked in the door it you know we we have a bit of belonging that would provide young people they get a club card when they walk in the door. Not serve you know member card and so they feel like you're part of something. You know and then as big as providing team. A job their first job they are used for 17 march program that we have. You know we don't know the whole program called you can the year where we collect. I would do. And they be termed out of their club representatives and they become act state representative and hopefully your regional representative until we highlight. I'm working through leadership programs and so I mean there's there's so much that. Boarding your club offers. And I wouldn't summon up and say that you'll be a member of the club. These young people get opportunity. And again we're not. Where. Zain that you can't get those opportunities at another organization but what we are saying is that. If you count the Boys and Girls Club you're getting it. Unique opportunity to explore you know lighten do you feel trip than have. Again I can't stress than empathize with. The staff and how carrying our part time in four times that far. The young people think eat every day that we interact with them so again. You know not to say that other program don't do that let the long lasting effect that we have over seven years in this city. You know lot. I think it's appropriate domain what I can people that we meet that are. Yeah border is important and probably walk through a club door at some point. And had no memory of being a part of the boy's finger out leavened. I personally never attended a Boys and Girls Club but I started working here when I was eighteen. I'm and the athletic you know I'm love what we do and I love. You know possibilities that we can produce young person's life. Money can you tell us about some of the programs of the boys and girls clubs are they are the programs the same at all of the different clubs are there is each club a little bit different. Cheer you know our government and here we have we have the basis of a corps americorps program areas that all of our club. On bit programs understood in the care your leadership education and career out of London. The art and sports fitness won't wreck and that we haven't seen programs all of those. It's been our core program areas. Are happening in every club now how that plays out in every last can be different for example. I'll eat the blazer club had de partnership with an outside martial arts school. So that. Lebanon and I just felt at all. The march art class due they've Thursday if you know dropping to a program that does not necessarily duplicated at every club. We hit rock live. We are in conversations right now with you have news reviews. And revelations don't wet. Do you have restorative justice track within arm. You know implement it here at the rock looked up to that doesn't that's not necessarily happen in an every Lebanon but it. Can't be eventually felt you know every every club has that when the economy but. Based on the community that is third baseball community partner. Ink can act that different form that programming you're out my partner. I'm also going back to our national brands we have access Q. Kind of curriculum and programs to our national connection to be CA. And opened a working program. Are unique in the universal that happen in every twelve. One in particular car career watched. And I mean that's helping young people you know spoke with a career what it what are some other injured there in what are the things they like. And that. Happening every trial if they have a teen population. There is that we have universal program that happen everywhere in any game. Allowing they plan to release for a lot less than their community and also youth boys you know most of our plans allow the use. You determine another programming home. You know why can't all the drama club because there were three members that just wanted to do drama in the clutch spells. Great they created drama club so. Again and that's the beauty of aboard the yacht club being able to have these young people feel like this isn't. They're home that there club that they need treat their own programs and Bernie out my ownership of their experience. Can tell by your staff and they must be kind of uniquely qualified to do what they do all the clubs. Absolutely. You know we are part time staff. Some of them you know art college it will as well or have another. You know part time job in some some of our Baffert. You know we hire teachers bank account. Kind data with the regular trash regiment of teaching and they wanna do is they'll give back and its young people M. Dark art I'm staff buried across the all of our club and our full time staff. You know add my kids we want you know degrees in math here than all of that which is very helpful in this sport that we do. Experience goes a long way in almost the but have you know teen years of working with youth. Our youth development. I'm. Close to twenty years working in need development. Hopefully I didn't share my age. Yeah. It's our secret. Yet. But. But yet on our staff that vary in in you know I think we're also. We enable it to recruit. Folks from other cities and states because. The good work that we do. On a national level in a regional level as well. If somebody listening to this program right now wants to get involved with the boys and girls clubs how'd they do that. Couple early bird I would say to go to our website at BGC. Portland dot or. We ought to have a very strong web presence or social media present they'll follow us on Twitter. In the Gramm. And none of the others that I don't remember the yep BG the Portland. Yet in our rock would let that particular there's information on there as well as an hour also. We have an email that is strictly for Iraq would so if you have any questions or you wanna ask me anything here maybe you just. Feel like. And I don't like change in work for the class. To email rock would it info. At BGC Portland about Oregon well. And the rock political will is opening a very soon you wanna talk about some of the partners and donors that that made this club happened. Definitely on the birth of honor and I if credit. Here kitty aggression. May require that I can I think location for an and so we would not be here without their partnership. Nike. Has helped out in and actually built against Brad though that is. We're thankful for the actor shared it is nothing charitable trusts Precision Castparts. Late day note charitable trust content data organ. As well. Has provided by any and then I do wanna make up about eight the court. We have a matching grant that we are working without them maybe they'll Clark McDonald foundation are funded in me. Although any donation and I thought to 5000. Or lack. Will be matched by the end of the year so. Yet so anyone I want you help out and again. You know there are plenty of ways that people financially you're in kind or just. You know wanna come in an armed volunteer some time can help out so to visit our web site and but Barack lid and that's how people can get ball. In the last minute or so we have here can you give me the details on when Rockwood going to be open maybe finally opened garbage are excited about the school. I laugh because we are they into the day regardless. I know overnight. And I would say well when you build a building of course it's not like building that's how they go out this is a major BL OB EO and so court. We how our internal timeline dinner at the construction time line and then there's the weather. You're the only thing that play a factor in new you know when we can officially open our doors so. I mean now with the utmost respect with that's opening in on the on the night content. That would happen each other and be in that club at 230. I didn't even mention Portland Timbers. I've donated. The football court that we have a football port rather crop. From a parking lot as well in the bad dedication. Will be September 28. Here I don't buy it as well. So many exciting things happening in a brand new club and Rockwood also. You must be super excited. Yeah I don't know what I have no word of that excitement. That's what I am. Married whatever you can tell me that that that's what I am. And I'm anal and I'm humbled because this is left with is not an easy. Catholic paper around and knowing what this club means that the community is. You're beyond. When I can imagine and thought it would wanna make sure we open it right I wanna make sure that we opened it. Very intentional. And make sure that we welcome all those that want to come to pick up. Full and absolutely congratulations on doing that. Oh we've been talking to day with a money Mohammed senior director of programs of the boys and girls clubs of Portland metro thanks again money it.
