This is metro scope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program and three blocks of veterans day is coming up on Saturday November 11. And this time on the show we're going to be focusing on the company that is focusing their efforts on hiring vets. On the show this time I would like to welcome Ken Madden Kent is the vice president of sales and marketing for Madden industrial hi there can. Where are you I'm doing well so it did my understanding the U overseas sales recruiting efforts for Madden industrial sector wrecked that is correct. And in particular recruiting veterans which is kind of what we wanna focus on today. Sure but on a first ask you to tell us about Madden industrial woody is too. No matter industrial cross and it's and industrials staffing company we provide. Trades people are craftsmen to. To both construction and industrial manufacturing companies found throughout the Pacific northwest. And you're located here in Portland then you have offices elsewhere too right. Yes correct where are the main headquarters early founders of the company and Portland Oregon and we have an office and Shia groups. Erica actually Vancouver. Seattle and Everett. Okay here everywhere. Yeah how is recruiting going these days. You know once been a challenge. That you were always struggling to find good people and they and people with skills that down the fifth positions are we're looking forward. In this market right now it's. I know why everybody seems to have a job so it's. See the convincing somebody to. Make a change sure turnarounds. Move onto another position that. Probably fit them better for helping the ones that are currently from moving from position to position our job to job to help find them the very matched. To fit in. The U. Unemployment rid the Pacific northwest is particularly low right now isn't it. Cracked yeah that's that's very well come does that all work. You know it is. You know we recruit not just in the Pacific northwest but we will occasionally we'll recruit outside. The Pacific northwest across the country and it. And down my chair of the workforce board for the state of Oregon which is good governors appointed board. But that board allows me to meet with other chairs throughout the rest of the country for. You know for all the other states in the end I'm finding that good to be exact same pattern across the country special when you're dealing. Which areas that are skilled gap like ours are where people with. You know skill level that. Who's been in decline for the last several years. It's finding those people are getting harder and harder all the time. Telling a little bit more about them the job easier recruiting for what he is and what these people do be doing. Well we do everything from Reuters that construction and so we're looking for more car openers project managers have to meters. It all the way down to unskilled laborers or helper positions on the and then in manufacturing it can be had a variety of things from. From maintenance tax. No rights. Throughout our nation now positioned so well but. We also do welders. Machinists. And then down to light or industrial white laborers or per. Unskilled labor. OK that I ever know really says Maddon uses the slogan let's build something what does channel about. Well that's kind of world overall C Merck's commitment to not only the employees that we serve but. To our businesses we're this is clients that are looking for good people. And then additionally. We live in our communities and we we realize show our employees to. Not just Serbs are working staff and our officers but the employees that we put out to two different employers. And so we we really are trying to make a commitment. Overall turn over our community but we're also trying to help train the next four force. And also provide some of the best people form players. Don't talk about said he recruiting efforts around veterans tell me tell me more about that. Well veterans. You know honestly it's the right thing to do that we realize that as a company or something that we stories. Considered these people sacrifice for our country. Manage our way of giving back to that group but beyond that it's also a Smart decision because you're hiring some people lift. Not only some of the basic skills so we're looking for. But also the personality type that we're we're looking for a day they have a high commitment to work ethic. They're very are dependable. How reliable. And those are the skills that you can't normally find. Just by looking as somebody's hard skills. So. You know it's just that truly makes sense to have to look within that group brand and try to help them out as much as possible. Because of their experience with the military they are extremely disciplined rates mean that stuff and her what the military is all about. Yeah and that I think that's the nice part about it they. The military drilled into people. You know legacy of those soft skills are sometimes missing in the workforce. So you know blue recruiting within that area hopes to fill those skills. And helps us to find the right the right people for our employers. Any idea how many unemployed veterans are out there. You know not a good question I would I really don't. You know we mini. Yet if this is it truly is. You know I've. It's this segment of the population that they say they've they've committed there. Their lives to serving our country end and that's also a values based you know part. Hard to pass up quite honestly. Why should employers hire vets. Well again I think we're we're talking about some of the skills sets for the Commonwealth's top. With hiring a veteran has the discipline. The reliability reliability is sometimes understated down. Personality. Skills sat there and I think. But a lot of employers really needs somebody is show up and be a part of their company and we're not only be a part of the company but also. At times lead. When it comes to showing how little rational work force should should pray participate when it comes to working. So it's. You know it's. If it is definitely adds value to a company. And also I think it's just pretend it's the right thing to do. Was a good tour website which is Madden one of your web sites and we call Madden vets dot com. And there's so much information on here that that veterans can use tell me more about this what that is pretty awesome. Yeah it's it's so I would say that we created down because we really want and helped this. This group as much as possible we've. We've done a lot of things when it comes to. You know helping him that's especially when it comes the military opt how applying that we provide and that's basically a twenty fours. 7365. They hear. Advice client and it's really help people that are struggling with. You know from suicide all the way down to employment. Of finances. Our relationships. It's it's really there and help. And it in the gets quite a bit of activity throughout the year as well. The other military help line and that's an amazing thing. Yeah it is and they and we need we need help them do it because delegates said they. Are these people come back and are struggling and that's for saying we need their. To do is to let them suffer like that we really need to get out and help them as much as possible. We're talking today with Ken Madden vice president of sales and marketing format and industrial. Now until we can what is Madden so committed to supporting veterans. You know it it's it's served our country well America I think it also losers are our company what are. You know it. It really is a U well trained workforce. And it's it. I think it just helps our community and it's part of rural overall came I mean I think we are community based company. And these people are part of that community so we wanna help them. Do you play have the ability to help veterans when they come to you and they maybe don't quite know how did go through an interviewer how to fill out an application do you hope women in those respects to. Yes we do little more that's a big part of our our job that we feel we work for two. Bosses than you know when we pull what we're dealing with. Employees coming and those are people that we're working for as well as a client so we work for. So it's our our intent to help them secure the right job for them. It doesn't make sense put somebody in a position that they're there under qualified for. Or they wouldn't succeed so we we give them the tools to help them through that whether that be. I open them with a resume. Helping them through an interview process. And now we're moving on to another stage or companies to we're also starting offer. Registered a partnership programs as well. And so move in the military personnel would have an opportunity to move into those training programs in addition to. Some the other helps that we can absolutely help that we can provide them. But that's great can you tell tells more about the producer program. Sure here on the pressure programs are. These are registered apprenticeship programs so there will be registered with both. The state of Oregon and Washington week Carly were approved for a welder for Robert Kidder a partnership. So we're going to be partying partnering with C local community college and joining on the some of their partnership programs as well so there will be a wider variety of training program salute. We'll be a part of these programs. Well in addition to. Helping our employees skill offered get up to Bobble. Bill also at the end of these programs to receive a certificate of mastery which will be recognized across the country. So it's very similar to a college degree. It will be something that goes with the employee whom I helped them demonstrates your skill level to the next employees. What are the skills are men and women that are coming out of the military what can also specific skills to they have that can fit into Bertuzzi. Craftsman industry. Well all of whom have grown basic maintenance skills. Somehow found good leadership skills. There's you know back. There's a lot of soft skills against said that. They're really helped. What an employer I'm we get a lot of employers should say just get me so let it show up. Can follow directions this. Stand will be the rest from there and that's also why the reason why we are who we decided to offer partnership programs is because. I think that is the crucial step. If you can find somebody that's willing to learn wants to be a part of a company ends and build something. More willing to invest in them as well and I think more and more employers are starting to move in that direction. Are there recruiting efforts are doing our our most of those jobs local jobs. Yeah yeah on them majority of Omar. We do have a couple players that you know. We'll use. Anwar pleas on traveling programs both for the most part closely employment opportunities or local within their community. And that you have some pretty good success stories you can share oil what's been your experience of hiring vets. You know that that's been. And I just got an email from yesterday from one armed place I was extremely thankful. For the opportunity that he had come with a local contractor. He you know he we don't usually get those stories quite how closely. And so women complete. Takes the time out of his status send us send an email or letter thanking us for those opportunities it means a lot. It it also shows that we're doing arch operate because we've made a right match. But those are the opportunities when we see some short term this is an early in particular. For me that'll work for the military came out of the military and came to work for us. And showed that dedication to the job and just. What we acknowledging our efforts means a lot quite complex. Yeah for sure that's that's a pretty good pretty good testament to the work you're doing. Yeah yeah well then that. I wish we could say we get that all the time when we don't but. I think you know we are for the most part doing the right thing. And make direct connections with the would both our employees and our employers. As a union mr. Wentz I imagine vets dot com and there's a great video on there that you did to stick kind of celebrate veterans because rarer when approaching veterans day tell me about the video's pretty premium sound. We have out there video word extremely proud of it's called the best of us and I think that explains. Exactly what we're trying to convey. You know I chose. Well then videos fairly long led. But it's also we're trying to get a point across the point is that. These are the people that serve our country. But they also serve our communities. And they serve. The employers. That there were four and there there's from the people the U wanna you wanna put first nonetheless when you're looking at filling a position and so. It's our way giving thanks. To the employee. Both Serb earned. Our clients but also serve our nation. What do you tell hiring managers. About military veterans why should they hire somebody who's been in the military. Or you know honestly for the most part I don't have to tell anything. I think you have I think most employers. Understand the value of hiring a veteran. I. Would like to say you know we're trying to them a favor for quite honestly they're doing us a favor because of the skills such as they bring Cuba. To the companies and they and they they truly demonstrate a lot of teamwork. And camaraderie that. Bill to strengthen our company. Jimmy ally via an employer would not hire veterans. I I honestly cannot see reasons and classy useless yeah I know obviously. If they don't possess the skills. Well for the job that they have available and that's probably the one reason but. If this skill sets are close you're further person to be trained into those skills so it's I think it's wars. Take a look at that person I I think. You know again it's it's. It has value to the company and quite honestly Whipple would. Unemployment rate as low as it is you you cannot afford afford to. Not look at the people that come out of military. So good let's talk a little bit more about the military help line tell me more about that how do you get involved in in supporting that. Well it's it's one of those things. You know again. We realize people's sacrifice for our country and so. We started getting involved with helping. You know not just financially supporting him but also. Helping with some of those fund raisers and efforts that. Lines for life. Has put out and so you know live a life. In 2016. Received more than 73000. Crisis calls. And over 30000. Of which were dedicated to military crisis clients. So that you that you can see the need right there and we realize that pyramid at this was one of those areas that urban needs a helping hand. And especially if somebody's suffering through some type of crisis sometimes it's it's a matter parking assist somebody that's experience in that field. And these the people they answered alliance. Most of whom are armed trained in the military culture and our answered by veterans as well. Feeling about the about military help and real quick thinking somebody is listening in named in the needed or perhaps know somebody who needs it you can call 888. 4574838. They in his 8884574838. For the military help line. The most ignored them military help line dot org some really great information their feet in needed. And when you first started doing their career the jury in did you ever think the biggest start this career in the in hoping to help out vets are doing it just kind of happened how did you well how did you start helping vets. Well you know I think who we were there to help every one. Initially we we really are there leash so we're sure we serve two masters we've served the employees become and apply with us. Blue also serve our clients send in the two. I need just as much and as attention as the other but I think what really happened is that. We really started looking at the people who we're recruiting and when you start realizing one demographics standing out as above the other. Com that's where we start focusing her energies so we really started noticed. That to the work ethic. The skills that's. The ability of the person cute show up and be a part of what company was a big part of what being a veteran. Entails. I'd say this really made sense and really start focusing soaring usually energies within that area. So can let me ask you more about the apprenticeship program which sounds super inducing and then into getting some traction but there were some obstacles getting that going Tony about. Yeah correct. Until this year there was actually. Along that prevented us heard and interpretation of a lot I was actually called a bulletin. That one out through the department of labor's forbid staffing firms are leasing firms should be a part of a training program or registered training program. I work with the Department of Labor. Com or in the earlier part of this year and we are what make a change that's sad to reverse that decision and so now. Staffing firms can be a part ever registered. Training program are prevention program. Tom we saw that as an opportunity for our company quite honestly empower employees. Come so we're investing heavily into those programs and hopefully. We're not just gonna be employing the next workforce we're going to be training the next workforce and helping employers to get. Specialized skill sets within their within their areas and get the people trained up. Into not just for the starting job but didn't to a full time career. If that listening or are actually do listening to who we're gonna get more information about the crucial programs. Well we're nowhere in the early stages. What you call anyone over offices and will be able to help you get in more information about. So apprenticeship programs within our areas. We're going to be partnering with a lot of the Community Colleges so in addition to getting. This certificate of mastery once you complete the program you should also be acquiring from college credit for that and those college credit. Will be paid for in advance. There also have given up the your office and phone number and maybe a website. You always creatures on our web site and I think that's the best way to reach our offices because you can find the one nearest to you for our web site is. WW dot MIT I dot com. Yeah that's an awesome it's it's a gray went so I'm looking at right now and also one in direct people to Madden that's dot com to which is also. The great great website. Yeah we we. We did a special web site for the bench because I think they have some specialized needs and that's that's a great web site if you're a veteran and you're looking for. They also live programs so we house specifically for you I think that's a great place to go through. He is doing great work. I appreciate.
