This is a microscope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program on your block so. The American Heart Association is the nation's oldest and largest voluntary organization. Dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. The month of February is heart month and my guests on the show today have some great information for us tonight to welcome Michelle why isn't bogged chairwoman of the 2018 go red for women campaign and the president have keybank Oregon and southwest Washington and also hiding Stewart 2018 go read real woman and a heart disease survivor but the ultimate scope. Think you think you thanks Meehan on Michelle let's get started when you think you. You are the chairwoman of the 2018 go read when I go red for women movement what does that mean. That means that I am that chairperson entrance say go red for women movement we have that an annual campaign in which are seeking to raise money for the American Heart Association. In an infant and particular in support of women's health. And we're gonna call me late in an event in September. In which we celebrate the success that we've had over the 2018 campaign awesome it was just getting started for 2018 since were brand new in the year revenues is just getting started absolutely. How did you get involved in this. Well it's important to me to be involved in the community and I think as I was looking for an organization to support or missing so is really focusing on is. You know women and how they can be successful and and really pay attention to themselves it think it is an Al businesswoman as a mother. As you know a friend in a person his you know active and busy. We are somebody who eat typically puts ourselves the last. And so I really wanted to have something has said put yourself first butcher health first in really pay attention to things that are gonna make QB healthy and thrived. NB and I agree remember as our society mare you know contributing and I'm being alive and healthy and while. That's always a good thing. So Laura and our young boy isn't important for keeping to be involved in the calls that go red key thing is really looking at and focused on how we have thriving communities and telling you think about today the mission. Go red for women in the campaign that we're supporting it is about how would you be. I'm healthy how you pay attention and how you strive and so it really fits in well it's our mission and as writing communities and how keeping can support me again partner out on the market. What if we say go read tell me about well what you're encouraging women to do. We are encouraging people she knew I had to Wear red and support and the campaign but also to know your numbers. In to be health are Smart about your heart health and to really understand what is it take to help prevent heart disease. And a bit at the beginning of the year a lot of people make New Year's resolutions it's a good time to have. Get on board and and make yourself healthy you keep yourself well and absolutely it's a good time to really start thinking about you know what he wanted you to be your healthiest dealing 2018. I really turns you you are the American heart association's go red real woman what does that mean. Chill or some means an awful lot to me especially but. And you know it nationwide there are eleven of us this year representing. And what that means to all of us is simply is just a platform you know we've all been talking about our stories and the importance of being aware of heart disease for a long time now each of us individually. Within our communities but to be put on a national platform. Gives us the opportunity to become. Even more passionate about what we were already passion about and what I mean by that I simply that. That platform allows us to reach people aren't a whole another level than we ever thought possible. And with us and our stories. Mike I so that means an awful an awful lot to me especially as a 23 year old young woman that means a great deal. Like to share with us your story. Yeah I would I would love to complete isn't sure so when I was eighteen years old I had been any competitive swimmer for about ten years. And like to think goes off again I think I have been listening Garcia freighters high schoolers teen capped an ex had had been swimming club swimming before that. Imus in the best shape of my life and really honestly thought that I was Wonder Woman and so. Come February 12 of 2013. I was walking down Hollywood. Some friends of mine from school. And I began to feel myself pass out. And I had been told I had you know anxiety. After reading several tests in Latin markets then diagnosis that I was given. And so I thought I was nearly having another anxiety attack I had been going through fainting spells it setter for awhile. So I walked to this close a school office thinking items can pass out those send me home and a BP did mar. Now I open up that office store and collapsed. And I missed the copy machine and I about an inch it's my hand and I am. I was a part my heart beat her ten minutes. And administrators humor thankfully I think our nearby right. And performed CPR for ten minutes and they checked me three times with an ET. Good heavens yes so I am after coming back from that and I just decided that. With this second chance of life that was impossible really. And I was not not gonna take that for Graham and and so that is why I asked citizens to use so many of these wonderful platforms to my advantage because. I don't want nothing more nothing less than to save lives. Be given that opportunity what was your diagnosis at the time source so. I am after going into the ER they performed several more extensive tests and discovered that I had they really very rare heart condition. I'm found mostly in athletes but it is genetic. And it is called risen genetic right ventricular displays a slash Carty on my apathy or air VT slash seat for a short. You said that without even looking tripping over you know what that those words on how to react early episodes began at the very impressed by being the only be remembering all those rights now. So what is her life like now. You know it's different. I can honestly say that. I do you still. Go through rough times and rough periods where it is difficult to think about how much my life has. Flipped a complete 180 cents I was in high school and since that event happened I mean I can no longer do Carty activity. Which is not something they hear about you know we're always told that to prevent heart disease you mark out maintain healthy Richmond things like that. I was in the best shape of my life. And you know since then it's been very difficult to have to try and do things differently. You know I'm went from an extreme athletes nothing at all. Ian Sonata best I can do is walking. A lot of the code and it's wonder fire you know there's nothing bad with walking but it's just different you know on being a 23 year old person. I was in college students like oh yeah you know I'm just gonna go work out after rape this whole pizza and I'm like OK but many you know not a whole pizza and I'm gonna you know I just can't karma then my regular life. It's stiff frank and at all I am you know like I said each day presents a new challenge. And this heart condition is by no means and predictable. Every day is a day when new challenges and new opportunities through my heart to do exactly whatever it wants it and I have. And pacemaker defibrillator. And I've been shocked by it three times I was in college and went through surgery at Johns Hopkins but. At the end of the day my heart is still going to do what it wants to do if it's going active it's going to act up but what I am. Remain feeling confident and has my doctors the American Heart Association all of really you know funds that they put her out three search. And NIC confident and in my device and then my medication and whatnot and so. He ended the day just keep living my life to the fullest in writing and it's really on who you. That's a pretty great yeah it's pretty wonderful you can really really dressed like they do any good thinks congratulations. So the heart diseases is the number one killer of women and not a lot of people know that is that let's truce to restrict. Today a lot of people think it's a man's disease why why is that why do believe it's a man's man's disease as opposed to a woman's disease. I wanted to. I think a lot of times people here's a stories. You know heart attacks or various. And physical conditions in so it has gotten a lot of press and you Younis CN depicted in movies and think Italy think women substance. And you win assistants are much. More subtle in different. He and it is something I think can often be misdiagnosed. Or be in Oshawa says. I am anxiety or indigestion and her things so really what we're trying to do is to get says the message out about how. I'm heart disease studies show up in women the fact and it's 80% preventable. You know with the right kind of awareness and treatment in diet and exercise but also to recognize he's a winner you exhibiting the symptoms that are indicating that you have an issue that needs to be dealt quest. And fortunately. You know for high eighty. You know she didn't get the right kind of treatment and is living a very beautiful and enrich wonderful life. And that's really we want people to hear and to not think that it's just something that I am impacts the men in our lives. Feel like you were saying earlier that a lot of women ignore symptoms of things because they're busy taking care of other people frank. So it's it's a good time to be listening to your body. It's a great tiny be listening to your body it's a great time to really understand and know and the I am a physical health. And she knows the numbers that are impart in teen what is your cholesterol what is your thing I think we often pay attention to just what's on the scale. And not to some of those other indicators that are really important for rested to be paying attention to and take some strains to make sure we do. The right thing to keep those other numbers under control and and not just cannot fit into my skinny jeans today. If it's very good experience. Advice there he's so let's talk about these these little Red Hat to guys have in front of you tease her adorable to literally Lauren hats and they. Our girls are key link is thrilled to help the American Heart Association and this year lunch. The little hats and big hearts and efforts. In coming up in the month of February it's an opportunity for the community to nix our crew Shea a little hats. That will be delivered two babies born in our hospitals here in Oregon and southwest Washington in the month of February and paso around the rest of the country. And then it's American heart month in services a way to celebrate fat. It's also an opportunity to create awareness and for new parents every hand congenital heart defects which can be won and it am number one issues that can show up as is issues in babysit so we want they're going to be. Informed and to be knowledgeable. And I also think these hats have just been really great way to bring communities together. Is there are looking to make these we have established December. You know lunch knitting circles at. 300 hats that were I'm contributing. And it's been an opportunity for my mom and I take to get together inning gauge Indy Sam. I'm making a pats ourselves I think Sheen I've done a couple dozen or so far between the two of us in me get a chance to visit tin. And Doolittle Chris Cheney meeting on the side. So anybody can make these hats anybody can make these hats we even have men in the opposite are showing up saying I teach me how to make these patents. While also recommend from what where all over the state race. They are coming from all over the stayed and we have time one and says the gals that works in our office her mom lives in Medford and she has been sending us a shipment sent hats. I'm from Medford to make sure that we get in my appear to get them you know wash stand. And packaged and be ready for delivery. And me in the month of February and I know they're going to be delivered throughout the state in partnership with the local hospitals in our communities. What's what's your hope with these Hillary apps. And each newborn gets one throughout this we hope that each newborn gets when throughout the state. And that and we get to see a lot of pictures and some really cute adorable babies with these hats signed. And at that I am weak tree awareness and additional I am education are around heart health for our families in Oregon along as this campaign and going home. Two years here in Horry again it ended this is as a first year they keep Pincus is partnering the ways this and I think we're gonna have a really widespread effort this year and delivering these shots out into the community east. They'll of these and you're having a lunch circles at the office were really it's the other nets are courses we're having lunch circles and we have gone through a lot and brand yarn that the how are the stores are depleted or they and they are not depleted I was at I'm Fred Meyer just this weekend and buying a mentor to continue making my hats for these little babies here in our community. I suppose. Like lunch you can get together Novo a winds circle right let me move and that's with a console and read that here is an event. A heart healthy. Absolutely. Thank you look at our list is involved and help out with this campaign. Listeners can get involved to man I volunteering needing her cursing some red beanie hats and delivering him to the American Heart Association. Our office impart lend by the end eighteen you wary. Yasser looking for volunteers to help wash in packaged these task as he wanted to ensure that there clean and ready to go is their delivered to those new parents for their new babies born in the month of February. Other specific guidelines to making perhaps we have to follow a pattern or anything like that. You don't need to follow a pattern and I will say I have seen some very treat is and very adorable hats made it. And we do you have some restrictions around attacked the yarn that's fast for a newborn baby east. That any pattern really will do Anderson simple patterns and details on the web site. Parts dot org slash little hats big hearts. Ideally mean that you neither person. You know I Don I'm pretty awful lot of attending college and it's not my it's time I think I enjoy you know helping package that parents and seeing him deliver an end and I think it'll be really fantastic to see. Some of the photos that people take with these adorable little babies and their red hats and we do encourage every wine TU and share photos that's really important to us. That and our selves as well as all of our social media followers get to see all of this these adorable babies to look. And you asked that they. That the hash tag width of the photos that says and little hats or again so that's little pats OR I missed the hatched. Thanks so called limit and a new parent must just love the fact that this red hats on the baby yeah. Mean it's February you know he's there. New born child gets a little bit of that Valentine's days you know slash heroine never had to go with the holiday that they're just happenings in coming to expel. And raise awareness for the newborn about Maya about partisans or is yes that's pretty fantastic there's something else coming up in February its national Wear red day tell me about that. So national Wear red day is February seconds in it isn't opportunity each year ended by 8 am are in the listeners and and your communities to Wear red. On that day and it is being done to promote 2 am awareness and I'm an American Heart Association and heart health. It's a pretty important day I think we were we were written around here at the radio station on I think you could we're going to be wearing a red. I'm all over key we have Ayman we're today Franklin well. He main key is he's gaming going a read on February 2. And we're encouraging all of the folks in our offices to you to Wear red and we encourage our our listeners in the businesses in the community where rent is filed. Michelle you're the president of keybank organ and southwest Washington but what does it mean for your bank and organization to be involved and in the American Heart Association. Is it me sit that it's an opportunity for us TUR and get back to the community. To be engaged in something that we think is critically important. She knew our employees to our our clients to and then neighbors that we were within our communities. We really our focus on spray being communities. And oss sir round Adam. You know wellness and really understanding your numbers are obviously is a bank we talked a lot about your your financial wellness Summers. It is a community partner we are some aren't folks attack about and be aware of and there are numbers and there and their house. They're who what is your blood pressure what's your cholesterol levels. What is missing CE can be dealing to really BS ranking member of that the Big Ten acre community in Oregon and southwest Washington. I didn't return do you have there's a really great web site set up for women to get lots of information about heart disease tell us about. Sure so there is a website and it's Carlo to go red for women dot org. I'm in I'm there I didn't mention you know how I am one of eleven national spokeswoman for this year twin seventeen through 2018. And I think it's really important to that and you know people are aware that my story is just one of millions. Billions of stories in the nation. But if you are interested in hearing and learning more about. Let these other ten women have gone through when it comes to heart disease and even stroke. And how they advocates for knowing your numbers and how they advocates for living healthier better stronger lives. I think it'd be really fabulous if we keep it is you know not many people CU. Via that website as possible because there's stories are absolutely phenomenal and I just and got. Constant inspiration is so important for people today so. I'm again I would say I was go red for women got bored and you can see my story on Paris well. It looks like there's tons of information on looking at the website now there's tons of information on ups though like knowing your numbers and. Oh yes momma craziest part is all of us are just women like any other woman in the nation. But these things happen to us and we were just grant this huge opportunity of the pop formats as mentioned earlier and listening to their star races. Breathtaking and he'll take your breath away self. How did you get chosen to be the national spokeswoman wasn't one of the eleventh she had so and as. Sophomore in college as a transfers in that's really when I first began creating relationship with the American Heart Association. Was while I was attending the University of Montana. That the time was actually one of their grassroots location so this is little interest and to be working with such a Smart tough location but and and the woman that I Wear to when and Sarah stay out she was incredible she mentors me a lot through the process but. After hearing my story a million gazillion times. And you know she. Secretly nominated me. And and national level for this opportunity and then she came to me at one of our. Weekly coffee meanings and said oh by the way he should be receiving a phone call here sooner going to be talking you know about this Nash national saying you know it's just nothing yet and I freaked out and see. And in person we spent three days together and I kid you not we made our own little sorority. Is just absolutely. Incredible and getting tell me famine purse and their stories are wonderful on video but meanwhile bring into tears and per cent and all of these woman women have you know it's going to be so cheesy. I only Islam and have these heart problems but me and I cannot tell Leo. How big their hearts are there are just the most amusing moment I've ever met and NASA at the time. 22 year old. You know I've always sad day and my fits a huge blessing to be able to inspire and be inspired. And Spain who will babe they keep me fighting everyday so it was incredible. And to be a part of that and you know I've been given so many opportunities through the Portland American Heart Association thus far and I still stay connected with the Montana American Heart Association and have worked with the Seattle American Heart Association and I'm my gosh the amount as opportunities I've been granted just within these last couple of months have been astounding and really like you said just breathtaking. With the amount of you know people that I've been able to meets and seeing the impact that my story has had and being able to know that at the end of the day. I stories saving lives that's really I couldn't transfer from my second chance. That's fantastic and when you go off the plane you were immediately best friends of these ladies because. You all can identify with celery you know they're probably like yeah one of the few people you can identify with cancel directly. Now that's fantastic instant girlfriends I've got ten other big sisters. But she's so great and keep in contact probably every day.
