This is microscope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program I'm Gary blocks of how does jumping into the fringe and Columbia River to raise money for the Special Olympics organ sound. Let's talk about the polar plunge. We're chatting on the phone today with lieutenant mark shrinking from the multnomah county sheriff's office and also Tommy came with Nike marketing and a Special Olympics Oregon board member welcome to Mexico guys. Thank you. Solo one big thing that's coming up very soon is the polar plunge mark tell us about the polar plunge. Or blinded a great event it's. Unique. In this area expression because we have the lovely cold weather in February. Where a lot of our community members come out to you. Raise awareness for Special Olympics and our athletes as well as student jumping into the frigid water of the Columbia River. Along with some of our other locations in ban Corvallis Eugene and Medford. I suppose the Columbia rivers in a little warmer than say during this Alaska. It would very much so I think they actually have to cut a hole in the eyes. To get in and plunged there are so I think we're very fortunate that we don't have to do you have to do the board clumsy and say Hawaii's that would be good spot. You know what they do I will find that I thought nothing that right now a bit of it. Syrians comics yes absolutely so low that it's totally a little bit more multiple plans when and where is happening with what beaches. So the report on employers gonna be here and brought speech just. By the Portland airport cop marine right there. We have a great. Event. Set up there and I think Tommy can talk about toll eventually Greg going on in our winner beach party that go on before and after that the actual plan yourself. Gonna drop right in their just stay east of the yeah games we've been a boat ramp there and it'll be a great time. Mark have you on the Portland before I've done a poor pines carrier that's been held up turn Portland while. Things going on your number nine if I recall correctly this is your number nine Tommy have you on the polar plunge. I have to Iraq Ryan I can't had a nine bidding could go five receptions. I think they just forgot of one or two million BP has. I regret COLT can block an outcry if you quoted him well this year so far winter's been pretty mild so might not be too bad this year right. Well I can't think he might just sit there on no that's not sorry about that I hope I didn't. The water still called the year round it's kind of interest being. Aspect of this warm outside. When you're standing on the beach ready to go in the water can be extremely cold. It is extremely cold wire stand on the beach the water's going to be warmer comparisons those kind of bad double edged sword there. On mine now it's all coming back. I thought I thought that all we if so tell me how this is the fund raiser for Special Olympics organ. We have a lot of different writers it's special tour again I'll let mark talk about this one specifically but we do everything from the governor's goal in the fall to. Two radio radio Tron. Just over the holidays. And perks to champion in the springtime so. Most of our activities. Are senator rather athletes there's stories and and our mission to deliver. Access to sports and did individual who's the intellectual disabilities and help them find the very best to themselves. So one of many but markedly health specialists and it. Do you met polar plunges is an absolute blast as warmer largest fund raisers. Center around it there are special they athletes it's a great time. I'm just a little bit of history of the law enforcement torch run that kind of a coordinated event that turned back in 1981 in Wichita Kansas by police chief Richard ammonia and it was simply grow awareness and funds for our athletes. And given the opportunity to have fun and in enjoy and embrace life and so it's kind of morphed to where we've gone not only from the torch run happened during the summer to. Events like this that are. Very large. So we're a lot of funds we have over I think it was about 15100. Folks that plunge last year's comic cracked me up I probably absolutely and it capsule is an amazing time. Or plunging V and watch large and it's fine in this during the winner unique we run and a 37 degree water. We do have a Friday event to go out throughout the year to raise that awareness. And I just wanted to touch based on those real quick please the other side of them we have our plane poll which is a great event for team's gonna pull a large aircraft across the tarmac. And that is always so much fun we ever have a cup events that we you know partner with propriety different restaurants including Red Robin throughout the year. To raise funds we have coaching opportunities that. Many of our staff. Won't Alter his coaches throughout the years to work with the athletes and prepare them for regional and state games. And then the last thing that is probably the most important in the most fun and have the most impact. On our folks including myself is when we get to go to the regional state games and and now metals. I'll tell you what the impact on the athletes. That that the athlete actually have a one that is truly amazing I can I cannot stress the importance of what our folks get from going to those events. It's such an awareness that such a fun time and it's so meaningful in so many different ways. I also a fine made dead as a parent of a special being in a board member our partnerships we've. The people on LE TR. Crushed Oregon is absolutely phenomenal and what they do for a stay in and day out let alone what they do force on the day when we're diving into the river to make sure we come out safely. Is absolutely Saddam also I just them take this opportunity to thank mark and and everybody involved. It's just amazing what they do for our athletes being in day out one of our if not stronger partnerships across the state. So we're very honored very privileged to have them alongside the list. Tommy could you tell us about your son Jack in hell world what a what what is his specialty is an athlete. He's well he's like that's fine so it's eight he can continue to fight sports now he's been lucky he's grown up in this Special Olympics program he's done. The Nikes games here on campus is how we got introduced to Special Olympics and then. He's played. Done a number of events is that as an individual athlete now and he's gonna transitions program at Portland state university in couple clues. Fellow student at Portland State started the unified softball team unified soccer team in the unified basketball teams so he's all in and we just. Just last night he went to the Portland trail which is game we members is of its unified team so it's just. Absolutely wonderful group. You know these are obviously the activities are fantastic for him they can't remove and keep them active. But it's their socialization and it's the fact that he's got friends we had him without intellectual disabilities. Just as equally as good as anybody. And good opportunity for him to its. You know. The a normal PSU student is absolutely phenomenal silk. Outside hospital and the kids. It's surrounded them. Especially in the unified sports programs. Telling the Special Olympics games happened kind of throughout the year and throughout the state is that correct actually. That's also some of the games that and when they take place. Well we have we have a lot of different competitions these guys. Regional competition that buildup to this summer games that mark mentioned earlier. That's really the crescendo of of our activities. Elton Corvallis last year it's phenomenal. Celebration of sport. Were athletes their families in the partners. All gather. It has complete obviously but as importantly competing make it to stay in the door take it to experience oh and Olympic village. Com it's it's just a wonderful experience and and what people. Don't see sometimes because the stake into very visible is speed the hours of volunteers. Coaches and local organizing committees. And people making training available for athletes to keep them moving throughout the year in preparation for those various regional competitions as we built this state competitions so it's. It's as he's had it's it's year round it's across the entire state it's been incredibly deep with volunteers did and didn't make all the possible. And you know obviously the competition is phenomenal but these. Interactions and so forth they're actually phenomenal. It must just make lifelong friends. Actually that's so great we're talking today with lieutenant mark trade but the multnomah county sheriff's office and Tommy came with a ninety marketing and a Special Olympics organ board member. Dark let me ask you again about the polar plunge what was the dating game for the polar plunge. The day for the one Portland here is February 24. And it's my understanding that both you and Tommy are super plunderous. Actually I am not a super plot hole Tommy he has got me beat hands down. One of our staff members from the sheriff's office is the polar plunder and do and it. Point four times in 24 hours. My hat is off to them all give you the past on myth and a couple years with a plunger in Portland. Bergen that's super plunged on yeah it's it's wonderful it's wonderful that I think the most important thing you have to do this do the super punch and be able to forget. A don't forget how little we were last year at 2 o'clock in the morning. I'm joking of course. We've done and it's it's an amazing. 24 hours we would some incredible people doing amazing things for Special Olympics. But most importantly last year we incorporated the athletes who were raising money deployed alongside of us and you know it was a very special occasion when you know an elegant sit at 2 o'clock in the morning when it was hard to it. Walked out of that speech and think about god and the cold water dish PR athletes and the enthusiasm they brought every hour on the hour. Was that truly inspiring so. It's fun it's a privilege it's an honor and I'm going to be miserable but I'm gonna make it true. So tell me what what what exactly is this as super plunger. No we plunge every hour on the hour for 24 hours starting Friday's. The 23. At noon and I'm not sure with a group is maybe fifteen to seventeen with some athletes and so. And will be who. Seem seem plunges everybody kinda takes couple pun using comes up to this seemed to try to break up the the monotony of going in and out of the river. I've mentioned are LE TR partners are in the water and around us the whole time taking care must make sure nobody gets. The big applause stay calm let's Tom and give all kinds of sponsors and support people that. Skills keep us happy and fetus and we played some cards and we had him last he tells stories. She ever quite a bit but it's it's a wonderful experience. Maybe a little bit of set I am meant in that 24 hour period. I don't miss a few times and then I think that's that's not a good idea but it. I'd I'd I'd I'd find that I'm not very good idea that I don't wake up very well. We have a good coffee sponsor. Melissa but a what is it though what do you feel like after 24 hours of jumping in and out of cold water. Released. And now it's it's it's a nice sense of accomplishment I've done it with the family a couple times. My oldest son is doing that do what it would mean this year I thought Brian Stokes. You know it's a great opportunity for us to remind our friends and family that. You know Jackson's Special Olympics in working we're. Making a commitment to sacrifices. Ahmet asking them to do the same thing to help the program overall so. You just say it's a great opportunity and a great reminder. Oh say 2 o'clock in the morning before roughly 85 o'clock in the morning but I get said the athletes especially last year made it all that much more. Follow me and and exciting as we. Kind of went through ritual 24. I'm a silver lining though the water temperatures pretty consistent 24 hours a day or. They tell me charter does it feel special called the preamble I don't believe them but yet. Mark tell me if somebody listening at once you have become a bump duke Portland to raise money how to do that. There's several ways they can participate first calling go to the web site at WWW. Plunged org and dot com. They can created team or registered plunges an individual. There is opportunity to locate the frigid water and Tommy may have scared away after the point for point does he does every year. As a super ponder bet there's a few chicken a client where they can just donate. Funding come down and join a winner beat party or they can come view a five K fun run or walk so with that option is there too as well. So yeah we've got costume parties we've got food we've got a beach parties we got there came and obviously the five K that mark mentioned. Color plunged two and the events. It's fun watching the team to come in in cost him and so forth so it's it's been advanced by Saturday afternoon it its full fledged. All in festival. Tommy do is do you dress up as your team dress up yet. Vote multiple times my favorite this Christmas oh yes I thought yeah he doesn't like Santa Claus and jump in the river. Our our board chair with 10 o'clock last year Greg and Greg listening now he will be Canaccord again this year. I thought. Whether he likes it or not yeah yeah okay the credit market that now what have you done actually the polar plunge at all. Yes I've I I've plunge every year and has been important alas this will be your number nine saw. We have a team the sheriff's office says the team. And volunteers. Eighteen. Then bailed very large team have we participate in bad and we go and our uniform ran right into the river. And have a lot of our staff earn the support personnel are out there making sure we don't get a lot the iPad. Met. We've done it every year it's a great event we raised a lot of money. And he knew him the best part about polar plunges it it brings together a larger family it's not only law enforcement. Fire professionals. Public safety professionals it's the community we have large sponsors we have teams from high schools. It's just literally see the best of the community at events like this. To raise awareness and have a great time and something that's nontraditional we have folks that come down area and they just wanna say they've done the port finally do it just wants. And then you get the die hard to say you know let this is so worth it and it's so much fun Tommy can attest to it that were to do this every year and we see this same teams over. And over again our numbers grow. It's absolutely the most fun anybody can. Have seen it if I may look mark said about the Keating is true of all Special Olympics events. The primary objective for Special Olympics is to create those opportunities to serve the individual athletes would. The intellectual disabilities and so forth but I will tell you as a family member. And as a member of the various communities that have been impacted and been part of the games and so forth. You're changed when you're in an in and around these athletes in these seats. You know procured Julie when they crossed the finish line whether it be very first they're very laughed it so it's a great reminder of what's special what's important life. And has as much of an impact as we have arms. Those athletes was individual athletes I'm sure were changing families and changing communities in a really positive way to Biscayne GAAP basis and apologies just. Last marks had a great example of great. A chance to experience that once spikes one spot. Really great that it sounds like a lot of fun. It's a great mother a mark let me ask you important law enforcement has been involved the Special Olympics for quite of quite some time how -- how did that relationship to place. Greg obviously. Going back to and keep the money is started at 1981 it kind of spread across the United States and and law enforcement inherently. When I started. Point seven years ago long port allows wanted to make a difference and help folks and this is one of those things just kind of dovetailed in what everybody wanted to do. So like Tommy said there's nothing more credible I think we've probably get more out of our interactions. Which are special Olympic athletes then they get from our interactions because I tell you what. I I'm actually afraid to compete with some or at least deserves get much better than I. And a unified sport they just bring up my level place so it's really good. As to do that and well again I've been fortunate I've been participating in law enforcement toward trend activities since 1997. About five years ago became mean one of the I'm on the executive council for the torch run. So I've got a little over twenty years and I'll tell you whether the most rewarding and fulfilling. I'm in my career to be able to do something reckon volunteered. And and have something that makes me grow as a person and to experience something unique and make see those miles this just contagious I'm I don't know how to quantify that. In a response but it's it's absolutely among them the best thing I've ever had the opportunity to be involved. Listen all I'll I'll probably I work in sport and I'm unfortunate pork and sport for over thirty years. And it's the very best the sport in my opinion and it brings out the very best in the individual the very best and communities of and I needed truly tested the power sports to bring people together and have them share something very special so. I grew the other disembarked. Do we need the games happen no around Portland. Yeah we have it's not our regional competition obviously all we around Hillsborough for regional last year. We were in new Burke for. Spout five years they think who would this state games themselves and just recently have we taken on to Corvallis so. Yes lots of activities locally. Building up his debt to the state games and in Corvallis at this point that. There were pretty active we had a ball games just recently. Most suited to Providence park. As an example. So cool. It's love everything about it. And absolutely amazing time we have our minds many college you name it Hillsborough all across this state there's opportunities. For people get involved with Special Olympics and into go to these events and share on our athletes and it's time will work spent. And especially if I had made special thank you do any of our volunteers and religion into this across the state you guys make this call possible. So thanks on behalf of the board in the parent do you guys do amazing stuff. Are you still looking for volunteers streaming events. I'm sure we are out our listeners I know we love to volunteer oregonians in general just we have such a volunteer community around here. We're very fortunate in that aspect. I'm mark let me ask you the vote or to law enforcement can raises money for Special Olympics throughout the years only about some of the other events that happen around the state. So like we talked a little bit earlier about our our. Or pundit on the format went across the tarmac can be quite a Chal is still hoping you're playing this lists well see that's the challenging part is I. I'm not sure it's much bigger than thought a Cessna. But if not the Jumbo jet that will finally go on vacations so camp somewhere between Clinton may be Tommy dog battle the better but I don't. It's it's heavy. Amounts and yet and it's not as easy to pull even across the level tarmac so it'd out. It's it is a fun. It is it's a fun time had vial that if a cup event again it's such a great time interaction with community. I coordinate those events say you know we have our athletes that are out there whether it's it just an excellent opportunity to do that in. And that positive fun environment. I think I've found myself for retirement. The job out there I guess I can be awaits step at a Red Robin or some other. Aspect of it bit. So between report finds the plane poll that tip cup event and then the torch run is where all started. All happened was a prelim up to the summer games summer's big games. And that'll happen all throughout the state every quadrant of the state has that pork friend. And that is where you'll see. Law enforcement and athletes running across. The very surface streets trying to create awareness. Having great times about in Multnomah County we do a tri county. Lay dead included. Dan Moore county wash accounting blacklist county. The last few years as. Concluded that echo park and tiger and we got him a large. Barbecue. For all of the athletes all of our volunteers all of our runners in it's actually an amazing time. The polar plunges coming up very soon in the end and getting people to jump into the cold Columbia River takes them incentives sometimes grape seed you guys have some stuff you're gonna now to get people they have to do this. Tommy tells about those incentives. Well there's a couple different contests. There's food for everybody that comes down to. To the B trot without. I'm not sure on the individual prizes this year but I know that every year we we we make sure people well entertained wolf says. And well rewarded for I'm sure they're creativity and their commitment. It looks like there's prizes for best costume which at that spewed one of the fun park to see what really dresses up. It is in its hello Larry and yet it's fun. A lot goes into the planning an open mind subjects on a payment the issue for the content as well under they're still trying to decide what they're gonna do. So some of the athletes do participate in the plant itself. Oh absolutely absolutely. Many of them. It is going to do to reduce individual market and the super plot. As you saw injecting them before all right well yes that's agrees with him but a so when people arrive in broaden beats tell me what they can expect when they get there. Close the beach can look like. The meat going to be fed up thank him and you're gonna be shuttled him because there's not a lot of parking right in live their locations so we have shuttle buses there shuttle folks then. The parking lot one half live. But rampart throughout the thing is fed up with that huge tent for the beach party and there's a lot of like Khatami is paying a lot of vendors in there with food and guess since wag bag and things of that nature. As well as music that is played north comic touch on that and then the beach is all set up with. Are changing and the super plundered and and it's it's in the outdoor vantage is this seven very nice as well. Well maintained in ready to go for the this have a cold water. Vents payday winter kind of water on the beach. Would applaud him between. Are there space heaters around. There are well that's good with a look at the September date one more time for the polar plunge. It is everywhere it point four. It's gonna be a great time and does not too late to sign operate. No it's never you can. Come down and register and sign up and they are right that day they go. If they wanna do and ended in advance. Mark tell me how they can in China open advanced. May go to WWW. Poll are shooting plunger orient dot com and sign up online creative team do it individually. Sponsored donate. Do Iran it's all there very simple. Get tons of information and look at the web so right now there's gobs of information of Brett available read your fingertips. Exactly and they have a date there for not only our local area but if it. You can't make it for this one's a short trip away they plan another event that might work form. Well best of luck to both of you doing the plunge and Tommy especially for you for doing these super plunging. Thank you. How many years Euro or you know be a super plunger. Did I invited. If the couple in between so this'll be like the fifth or sixth they've done but I missed one or two love these troubled past but it's fun it's fun. Yeah it's going to be very time. And we targeted they would lieutenant mark shrink with the multnomah county sheriff's office. And Tommy came with Nike marketing and Special Olympics Oregon board member banks real self. Thank you.
