And more specifically how you or someone you know could entry into the tech industry. On the show this time I would like to welcome Hannah Paterson and any content both with the tech academy here in Portland look into the children's you. So let me let me first start with you could you tell us what is the tech academy. So that tech academy is a coating boot camp which is essentially training program. To teach people how to develops software is twenty to thirty week program. And teaches someone who essentially knows nothing other that to the point where. They know how to pattern develops software. How to make web sites and then we helped me get a job. So coding what it is coding programming basically sounded just yes so basically it's its away for a person to tell a computer what they want to do. I would say that pretty much any time you open your phone or computer in your using it to do anything a developer program to it. Using computer language to tell the computer what to do and not software development apps cutting. So you mean the iPhone doesn't think on its home now here's the absolutely that we loan. A lot of physical but it's just a machine it doesn't think even artificial intelligence it's never going to think on its own without someone else cutting program it to do something. So what kind of students come to the tech academy. Basically people who are looking to either make your career change into coding. Or who are looking may be there encoding her like earlier on about wanted to freshen up their skills and wanna learn the most recent technologies. But is essentially people who do want to attack have a career and suffered development. And belies the very beginning it's may be people that have never done before right now brand new to it. Yeah there's there's a really wide range of students which which is finally pat you know eighteen year old who are fresh out of high school and I just always known that this is what they wanna do when they're starting their first career for the first time. And then we've had people in in their you know early sixties I can't retired pastor who is. In and so it sometimes has people who coded decades and decades before an end don't know any of the new technologies and sometimes it's people who who. Are barely and they're just familiar computer users have no background in in development and all. That's the must be super instinct is it's all walks of life that are common to hear that gap really is something that the and you have the tech academy is called coding boot camp what is what is coding boot camp. LSU. Yeah how we we call it cutting you can because it's sort of an intensive our program. We're unique in network self paced so. That link to time it takes a student varies from student to student but it's typically twenty to thirty weeks program. And it's supposed to be as immersive as possible. I am sorry that beginning ten and swear to take you from happening no background to being a well rounded junior developer gets ready to get hired right away. And that's that's been a boot camp part of that comes from. And what do what do you mean by intensive as if like 24 hours a day or you do those on the weekends or is it can never and he never get some sleep. It's a pretty flexible schedule can be the initial concept of a developer group Kim comes out of San Francisco and that was an extremely intensive you know eighty hours a week you're sitting in turn your computer and meet. In the much more relaxed approach then that in students control their own schedules. So it's about twenty weeks long if you're studying forty hours a week. We've had students who pretty much just slept eight and studied and got through it really really fast. And then there's people who hold down full time jobs and are just studying on you know in the evenings and on weekends and you know parents who are were Keener on their kids' schedules that sort of thing tip. Is that something that you do you would you come to leave tech academy or do you do this on line. Yet is a few different options on you contended the campus and downtown Portland. And that's the that's the preferred methods of instructors there and help you guys are going through gallery questions answered right away. I'm by the entire program is available online. We develop our own custom learning management systems so. You can literally you know beyond vacation in Hawaii on the beach you know settings are for developmental and if you programmer. The previous antithesis of what you're on vacation I am happy I'm on vacation so I can study he she thought that if you want yeah if you yeah. So I knew each of you been at the ticket Abby had lost in the first. Ivan the tech academy for about a year and a half now I started right after Labor Day into when he sixteen and what is your role that can be. I'm the vice president for outreach site overseas. Sort of community outreach and marketing strategies both of those two things. They mean about you I didn't detect enemy for three years. And I pretty much done everything. And non technical sell thorough yeah yeah I yeah I haven't really surprisingly haven't had selected code. I helps you know you know hundreds of people get jobs once they do finish the program. You know and all the administrative you know sign out. Hiring people firing people eat you know you name it. And is this is a start up where you you know you where a lot of different hats that. Did any ice talks about how when he started he he made the coffee every morning that's like. As an Angel out of the school but Danny's a coffee maker yeah graduated from that. He's the only other things now to that they rely on you still for coffee mill that I could see that alive it pretty good stuff yeah. That's okay to have your student studying you gotta have good stuff right yeah yeah. We definitely trial by Italian aria. Yeah so I would have the idea for the tech academy come from stimulus Cuba. I'm so yeah anything he'd been involved in technology essentially his whole life combat a few years ago he essentially was. I'm working as a senior suffered developer but was taking on contract work. And realize that there was a lot of work that he didn't necessarily need to do himself you know a lot of simpler tasks that any junior programmer could could could deal. So he he started. Teaching people he starred in taking a few students under his wing. Teach him how to had a code that have I think in. Because he couldn't find any team. Anyone around who you know who already knew enough to be able to do that so we ended up teaching people himself. And then when they basically his son came home and was I dad don't do I wanted to do a software boot camp. And Eric was but but is that right the but I found out that this is a thing ringing out intensively teaching people that develops software and he realized that he was essentially doing that with these. Houston is that he had working form. And so he decided to head turning it into an actual in actual school. Aamodt got. Essentially that's very Jack came into play Jack standings are other co-founder who really brought the administrative. No how incident into the mix and really put an actual school there. And they have dated a row earnings of the office and now how to pattern around a company essentially. They were together in and build from there. And the rest is history as right as I thought Kerry are dead. How could be open this up to both of you how important is the tech industry to the Portland metro area. Analyst at the first it's essential and it's it's growing rapidly I feel like everything in the city is growing rapidly right now the definitely be the technical element we have. You know. Of course there's mayors in Talbott there's lots of other large technical companies here and lots of startup tech company is in Portland that are are quickly growing so it's it's definitely essential and then on top of back. As our lives become more technical. These skills become more essential in every industry. We we've had people go through our programmer start our program that. No don't necessarily wanna leave the job that they're currently end but that these skills are going to be more and more essential I I had a student yesterday say. These guilty just gonna really help me help my eighteen. And she she works in education. And she just knows that. That Audi in. The ability to develop software to her existing tool kit is is gonna help her no matter what she'd that's. Get technologies can if you're a stay right after that except. Then what can you either one of you speak to the fact that there's a lot of companies that do burden. Initially based in the similar to store the Bay Area and they're kind of moving north but there's they're kind of a migration come in this way. Yeah I definitely say there is. I mean this city of Portland you know I've lived here my whole life I say we have a lot to offer here. Let me yeah I definitely seen him BM many different companies to start the Bay Area have migrated up here. You know that obviously it's it's a lot more affordable appear. There are a lot of perks to living up in Portland. So yeah we are we are growing from from that direction up here for sure. Yeah I was I was talking to a technical recruiter yesterday who's talking about how there was the huge boom in San Francisco and how anchor leg Krejci and then not happened in Seattle. And now are really seeing that happen in Portland. On that it's kind of sweep weird they might be the last of the three to join not party but at the bloom is starting to happen here as well yak. While some more traffic is coming. How badly I felt sad face on it. Reality it's it's the U I live in Portland for probably close to 25 years and it's definitely changed over the time it gas that's there's a lot more people here. Yeah plumber exciting things happening in this beautiful city. Pretty awesome news I'm. So I don't ask you to sell me on injuring the tech world what what are the benefits and what are all the great things opened that that I should be interest event. At that the biggest thing has really come down to. Just finding a job when your dot coming into the tech industry there's a lot of high paying jobs and those jobs aren't going anywhere. At. We were looking not a statistic yesterday that something by 20/20 there's an estimated. When one million unfulfilled. Tack jobs that you know computer science graduates are are only going to be filling a small percentage of what the industry's gonna need by Tony Tony. So in coming to tech industry there's going to be jobs and those jobs are going to pay really really well because there's not enough people to do them. And and I think about the biggest reason coming into it that's. You really quite surprising that there's some there's going to be so many unfilled positions gas in the industry. How come. None not necessarily how come their unfulfilled but how come and there are so many jobs. When we look at our lives I think even even just in my lifetime or even if I look back ten years to attack how much technology was in our day to day lives in Howell. How much it was used to get from point eight appoint be here to communicate with somebody to where we are now. And some of us can't function without our Smartphone pretend and it senators you know how what I how I know where I'm telling her how what I tell someone amenity five minutes late like those. Those kinds of things and it's it's just. Immersing into more and more aspects of our life and I think receipt act continue. Yeah I did I can't imagine it ever. Reversing right where we don't have the ability to text. Right in here can get in in as technology. Expands and grows in and we can use it for more and more things to make ourselves more efficient or to make our lives easier. Someone is do we know where to make the technology do those things and and that's the developers. Let me be devil's advocate a little bit and say you know what what more can my. Phone do what more can my laptop do that a dozen or do you think of so fast already then. Oh I think that things like I don't yet you think well is this kind of this has slipped since that I think. Those things all the time like how how could possibly do more but the things it does now I wouldn't I wouldn't have thought about my own I that I would have never would've occurred to me. That. Phones could do all they're already daily. Yeah to think that that your telephone is more powerful than the computer you had ten years ago yeah it's pretty phenomenal. So what's on the horizon what do you see coming up. In terms have technology itself turn terms yeah I guess in terms of technology and and we just kind of what's on the horizon of. And there's. And there's so many things I think artificial intelligence is is definitely the direction a lot of things are moving in on you know why it. What will these robots be dealing in and how limit our lives easier and how they make them identical to end at. So that's definitely. That encrypt their currency is on that he does where that's coming out of blogs chain and what it's capable of is it's gonna open it a ton endorse. Yes and yeah acrid their currency with. ERR did our currency is becoming electronic it is becoming. You know numbers. Within computers. That in itself is is is huge impact that night. You know that started me in a number of years ago over ten years ago. Is definitely within our last year now is becoming a huge factor in. There's a lot of involvement in it lot of our students are getting very interest in Manhattan and learning more about it so that's another. Thing maybe it's. Anymore about what crypto currency will he be bankrupt a currency so electronic. Money. This is essentially that the root of it at a currency that is not controlled by any particular government or and anything like app that it's it's open source and. Yeah essentially Adam is is not controlled by any government is something that is. That you know is. Its. Yeah how would you. It was like it's kind of there's there's the technical aspect and how how you do that hurt her but then there's the then there's what we're of their ramifications of it. But yet essentially. Yet it's not it's not owned by any any any body is is something that day you can you can it has value because of its own. Self generated scarcity. That net you know yeah how he created it. It's interesting because I mean self Farley look at things like they quite and we just see extreme volatility and Hamas and like all I don't know why I want it. Keep my money in a place that I don't know it's gonna be worth tomorrow or. You know why would a business one ticks accepted payment when that the value of batten down of a bit coin could could change in two days and there's so many questions but. I I think that all of those questions exist with each type of new technology. I think that when we first saw Smartphones introduce people were like well why would I want a phone that can do all of those things I don't I don't need a phone can do I just need to call people. And now those people are using their Smartphones to do everything cell. You know overtime in and I think that we'll see that volatility calmed down as soon as it becomes more widely accepted but yeah I mean it there's just so many questions around. Cricket currency and in the block change in general at this point but I think that it. Those buzz words will become more and more part of our lives. Ever watched a little bit of bitcoin in its early goes up and down a lot yeah. Isn't exactly something a little tentative about getting involved in. Yeah as I use all four of them. I mean I think it's going to be inevitably part of our future and I don't see anywhere around that. So yeah I mean we we have you know some are staffer very involved and it very very interest in week BB you know given talks about it at the school. So I don't think there's any magazine and no using avoiding it I. Things are critical technology is still in. And for what it stands for you know like the idea that is not controlled by any. Government or anything like that is also in in my opinion pretty cool concept. Yeah I think that you know in the future gonna see it. A little less used. For it strictly investment purposes and more like Yemeni go to the store and you know use this many big decliners theory M two and or fractions thereof to can't print what I want to net. Yes I I definitely don't trusted Lafayette and I am personally pouring my life savings into it now no definitely not a black man. But it's it's interesting it's fun to to watch yeah it's out there. Yeah it's it is interesting doesn't have to see it yeah NC with a does have a school Denny let me ask you what. When people graduate from the tech academy where you've seen them being placed what kind of jobs are out there and have you followed people along to see what their path as. I definitely I'm Suzanne is actually rated different jobs do you think. It's not necessarily that you just jump into you know sitting nine to five writing codes. Are writing lines and lines of code. All day long. I'm did the number of different jobs that you can get when you know software is very very wide like for example. I am some tough for companies you know with there. Newer developers will start them off and customer service type roles where there. Where they are manipulating contracting code. You know as type of customer service. In it you know you know maintenance type of activity right. And then name may move into more of full time developer temporal. But there's things like that there's things like. Yeah testing the software out. Quality assurance. As well as just in out years starting a software developer. You can be developing web sites you could be making. Industry programs to helping business. Manage their inventory. The at the this spectrum is as wide as technology itself says yeah. It's kind of never ending BI itself there yes you go and what kind of barriers DC to learning software. So I'm the bears signing software. It is same barriers like. Like you say you wanna go to college right that's one route that he can go about learning software. You're gonna have to figure out the time to do it I mean again have to figure out the money. To go to college. So those are the barriers to getting in any industry. But then I'm. With South Korea repair. You know an existing barrier where you have to break in this industry which is where you have to show that you can you can. Develop things you can make web sites you can you know do your supposed to do with. But of course you don't necessarily have experience doing it professionally see you have to some figure out breaking that barrier of out of having to have experienced before you can gain experience. Sort of speaking you know an inner real job. Bank you know I say that it's it's it's learning to do what your resource is regaining go. You know it begin at pianist steady up. By yourself you know just there as they you know tons and tons of online resource is you learned. Time or you know are you India boot camp which is a bit more of a controlled directed approach to that. Picture that sounds like the the way to do this is fully immerse yourself in it and and probably find out alone that way if it's really something you want to do pretty. Yeah absolutely. Yeah we've had because there's this tech academy is it a little is different from a lot of boot camps and that. You it's a full stack web development meaning. You will develop that you can learned about not only web sites that also way back on the back end that stuff he never even. It's sheer org source users not hurt us yeah yeah yeah I use the irony about that he hit out at the time. But you know you learn you learn the whole array of it. And so you know the result of that is someone who's done a tech academy knows. A bit more of the though wider variety of technologies and you know from there can either go like gray I want to be someone who who works on all of this you know entire stack here or. I want actually just focus more on you know the front end user expansive unit developing web sites that type of thing. And he said earlier that suddenly you've you can run the gamut of aged group Trey from fresh high school film sixties and seventy year old gap is there a particular personality that fits into. The tech world better than others. There's. Eight yes and no I mean we've seen him because there's such a wide variety of scenes we've seen a really wide variety of personality types and and skill sets and aptitude that. Do really well in this industry. I would say it consistent thing that that people should like to do is. Worked with computers. Which sounds kind of funny but there's there's some people who just have no desire to look at a screener be different of a computer and made it probably won't do very well in software development. And then it's possible that logical and exactly there is there's a lot of problem solving and Tony and there's a lot of doing something that doesn't work and having to figure out why doesn't work so people who like puzzles people who like problem solving. That that personality trait does really well. And then on top of that I. Think this this misconception that code areas to sit in front of the computer by themselves all day. There's you know there's the running joke of the stereotype of the guy in his mom's basement like eating chips and drinking now and do NN that he he works by himself and and doesn't get along well people. It actually that personality type doesn't do very wellness industry at all because. Truly a software developers working in a team almost all the time we say that starting out cutters maybe spend 20% of their workday coating. And arrested that is in meetings is looking at things with your team is sharing with your team and discussing what you know what he commuted to make it better those kind of things. So really the ability to work with others is super important. At seemly would be very collaborative yeah at all I think you can not one person develops the app that does something right and if they do it. Probably isn't gonna work very well for most people. And how breaks back part of a collaboration is everybody's brains working a different way to make it. Yeah user experience even that much more fulfilling yeah that's part of why the diversity is so much spot in this industry is different people think differently and approach problems differently and noticed different things about the problem and how different ideas of how to fix it make it back. So what so what he's gonna see in the future for jobs in the tech world with what's coming up. Oh I see a lot more jobs coming you know a couple of reasons for that one just because software you know cool apps on your phone and you know different. You know software companies coming up with cool ideas to make life more finding efficient and easier. I'm that's one aspect of it but the other aspect is pretty much every company. Nowadays has an IT department has. Is gonna need their own website or need their own. Computer program to run their data today business in order to you. You know keep up with keep up with their competition are to be the most efficient and effective that they can be. So I am not only you know not only jobs in suffer companies that also you know other companies that aren't software that have large. I T departments. Who're. Who are building now on software. If the the future is very bright I think for the tech people yeah definitely added that. Less than we don't anticipate it slowing down in her life and he's okay but I'm not anytime soon.
