This is microscope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program that I'm during blocks of the mission of health care for all or again is to bring equitable affordable comprehensive high quality. Publicly funded healthcare to everyone in Oregon and the United States. Portland music legend Norman Sylvester is hosting the seventh annual healing their healthcare blues festival Norman is here to talk about the festival today with our own Steve Pringle. Well we are here this morning with my good friend to end a long time longtime friend collaborator yes indeed mr. nor are many many years will be canceled us or are you doing come go around and bullied kid is here to save me -- me out to use Steve was up and a singles. If you let it float my friend all right well you have got something. Very unique. I would have to say 125 years and I've been doing music I've been doing radio and a part of the community hum. With musicians a lot of times and I have to say this I don't mean to beam Blase about it but it's a lot of love me. It's a lot of what what can I get what am I gonna do true but brother you with this. Healing health care blues is truly you looking out for everyone that you come in contact with. Tell me a little bit of what the human health care blues is all about. Well the only healthcare blues is some campaign for health care foe Oregon to get universal health care on the Balladur on 20/20. It's just health care is a human right we tried to make sure that. Musicians and small business and people across or getting housed affordable health care because I think that. Myself as a musician I know that's for sure that a place so many benefits. And then of course celebration of life. And then problem BM lack of health care the lack of redolent examinations. In no desks that's a human right I think that. That's why am in this assists for the future of people in the community and my grandkids. And children just to keep their stress off their shoulders because. A lot of folks are only. One doctor's appointment away from bankruptcy you know you read and it's truly a sad situation there yet. So was this a seed that was planted by someone else is this just an idea of viewers that culminated into something that we've been doing for the past seven years well this just look the inner city both Cecil start out 1988. As an example Jesse Jackson when he was running for president. Here in Portland that's rule Esquire. In Iran for awhile and then it took a little time off but. Bob gross and can cropper who wore on that first committee. Met with health care for all or again seven years ago when instead let's get the band back together yet in this put dispersal back together before and universal health care so they call me. In my wife and now we've volunteer how we planned this thing from October to April. And we she does to promo for helps me. I'm book everything in its you know it just comes together the so community amino committee of about twelve people. In everybody's got to strand near the end we just let let let people go and do what they do it and I'll come together. This year specials on April 21 time and we got that in north Portland right all year dreaded no poet the other north pull an Eagles. Right on the corner of life extender and north Lombard. I think in there go I know exactly where he lived on the corner of west Baylor at Lombard has tons of parking am glad swab is donating part of did a lot for extra part and we had. 780. People and in last year. Excellent. What you know when you kind of think of different communities musician community. I happen to know quite a few musicians that's they just can't make it a part of their career. They have to have another career just so that they have the health care where you know that no cliche don't quit your day job right don't quit. With a guy as a musician granted none of these is voicing out worked the 25 years the team stand a streak end. Of course I had great health care because you know doing that time mom before reaganomics. The unions whose real strong also I was doing real well but a play music on the side raised found that played music sold over the BB king and as darlings this Holland 1987. Outback down a drug company the next day. Amazing you know Osama if you fly answer film. Down here cruise control helicopters that worked at. Oh my well you know that's one of those stories that you're going to hear quite often just like I brought up yet you've got to musicians that are keeping. You know it would be nice to. What's. Are you asking folks because you say you're trying to put this on the ballot so there's going to be signatures gathered right. Well you know what this is this is the health care for all Oregon Educational Fund. In the Educational Fund it educates people about you know what. Universal healthcare is is really a big boost to single Payer universal health care. Oddity is this piece that's the government state. Taken over. And it probably will get the expenses from taxes. On. Constituents. But big pharma money and big insurance money is fighting against this and I can see why. Out of all Mendoza last countries with the biggest and we're highest health care rights you know and asked not really coup gossage doesn't trickle down this. It's kind of like beat. The council. With a moat but going back to that. With the drawbridge. The crocodiles and immoral and we got here. In a drawbridge never comes down you know so that's what we've trying to get get away from that I mean. At as a look back upon delay and Janice in Orlando and bill postal. On ovals people that far you know health care you know is just over my lifetime and music have a plan for forty years. I just see health care deciding. A lot of things yeah you know even in the professional. World right now if you went. To work as a my Sega good news and bad news. The bad news is where your job is going away. But the good news is that we got to know employees. 5000 miles from here somewhere. And they helped get that is really good. Now somebody will move it sure didn't even if have to hear the wage here. But if they sit held guilty or you get out for the kid comes with it you gotta go yeah you know you decide. Well I kind of like your analogy with the mote thing is those alligators have a lot of money to keep that there are British are coming into the culture alligator would money yeah alligators have the money and so. I would have to say win. I hear federal. Talking about let the states handle it let the states handle it whether it's health care or whatever they want to regulate. Do you think or again. Has a better chance in the rest of the country. At seeing this because I I think our state has a little bit of an open mind in the way that. We see other people in our communities and our neighbors it's a good. Tasks state I think we can do it here that's right because I think or Californians. A really liberal minded open minded thinker Chanel. And if you notice and then you won't see any and you hear health care all the time right. But they're not saying that solutions so what to do four or whatever I just think that this in a city boost hustled us trying to get. Used to lead vehicle of music. And danced that song. To open up their minds. To. This concept and get the word and you know yourself that music is a universal language picture you can get it. Get the word out through solved acai wrote a song called heal the health care blues. I don't care what party you're in independent and nonpartisan I don't care what party you're in. Gimmick can craft a Republican. On the healthcare blue this only way we can win. And that's just that's the truth we got to come together. Well do it Ali is also just kind of taken a look at all the other countries that do it with less money than we do ya you David David vest. Went to camp under the federal relating Canada. And dated this. Not that he had it is people's bad news. But when I did see him a year later I noticed right away that he hit his grill was just pop it. In my hand. Good many outsourced call might eat Deb do you have some of weren't not Arianna faithful. In Canada. You know also Kamal. We heard the stories all the time somebody hurts themselves across our line and goes over to Canada and says not happened here. Happen here. You know and people don't want to literally Canadians that live on the border they don't wanna travel over here suit to vacate. In relative to have a vacation only because if they slip and fall fell into it becomes. Well sometimes. Life changing it up to a point where you you don't have it's really funny watches documentaries and a Brigham is the name of Michael Monroe sickle if your my more sick yeah you know you watch that show and you see these. Folks coming out you know just had a baby you know maybe had to have extra of surgery with a childbirth and everything. They walked out there that without a bill moment you don't worry about it it's not gonna change your life it's not going to debilitate you financially. Will take care of it. You have got to follow this mission is basically to heal the health care of blues in Oregon. You know lying on get on Medicare. The year after I went on Medicare the deal went away in the vision went down. And when do you need demo and when you get older one of the field and start to shrink into. They need me the peanuts and the break to tease you don't hold these animals like. So I think that this festival is just the magnificent festival for. On the platform that would on and get the word out there and keep educating people about health care. How can join the movement to campaign but we really need the young people because a lot of the young folks you know when I was young I thought I was gonna. You know being immortal. But we have to plan for a future Saudi young people have to get in and fight for his health care thing for the. Or future I think that young people also have to know that a lot of their employers are not going to be holding their health care in the same way that. Hours have been true or of course I never understood why the companies and corporations that are required. To hold them health care for its employees why they've never gotten behind it instead. You know. It would be. Lessen the burden upon them. If that government could come in but we've always we've always just taken it put it on to the company's. And the companies have always is can live with that and through the years they've backed off because the prices have skyrocketed. So they backed off and what. I mean I might go to my grandfather all the time everything was covered with him yes he had a pension and he worked at one place right over here off the yield on. At Penn Walt for 45 years. It just doesn't happen anymore. Or not they're not gonna have to continue on the job and off you know it it's community partnerships like me being here today without. KH UN you know is just. That helps him on one and we seeking community partnerships to help with this that. Is it bodes well for the future the health care movement who's involved. Who's up and get the word out so well in this boat together. And would bailing out with a little bucket to know who working together but I think that doesn't have a light at the end of the tunnel in this festival. It's just to create the energy and a train going on that tray. Down that tunnel red light. To help. Get the word out then. The NC boo Cecil. You know we've we have food there we have a body curious this year we have of dancers we health. Blues country and led tree jazz. And tab dance in name are you going to be doing the history of roots music right I would do that it they overrule. All that's coming up with Albert wrote so let's talk more Saturday twenty. Of the 21 time we get open doors like what 5 o'clock in the last 5 o'clock OK he had the first that this these chess pro he's doing country blues. And then we got him reunion would no Briggs oh Biondi the guy and I. Reggae band become an on oh good and then we got to keep king Louis in court it would LeBron to steal Tim massage junior and Bill Rhodes delta blues. A guy by the name enormous disaster here plans some blues. Local Altria which is Brazilian dance and they don't come to an a procession. The kings and guitar which is pita pita Gammon. Michael Osmond Kenny Blu-ray. They don't blow and slowly. It was an eyesore that's tonight Michael's the he's phenomenal didn't sit alongside the look for all the easier as he did yeah he was a bonsai Jolie look different it was as they want an all in this chair rob don't acoustic blues. We'll close out without. Candor OSHA to. I thought bogey jet would be close and has been avoiding you get home early well you know one. Every two years old I got to be I panicked I know you cannot say I don't I don't think. And I figured out about a civic leaders also to plan a festival like this I book it. And I do know. A benefactor to donate. And I must say that. This happens every year that donate my whole music budget for me. If you're just donation comes seen it yet that's due to me. And this just a wonderful. Wonderful person I really appreciate that but. You know I'll be breaking down tables and you know I I try to support most of the backed by clan out of my ban. But stood died she comes in and does this now stooge comes at a good for him he met that man he's the CNI will work together on Gooden who had for many years excellent death. He comes in and does that so my wife and how we break amount tables and then got bill and let you know is just a village work and together man it's just a wonderful thing you know you have you always have had well I mean it's Norman Sylvester in the family bit. Anybody that knows you feel as a part of your family I know your family's extended -- it goes off to a mean you've been where if rob now cents 3033 years oh my goodness you know tiger rob Shoemaker is bass player to some of the people around him the Rhonda you were the first to find her when she moved here if you will to Johnson who she moved here and she was shot. Yeah and just look at announced six. She's a flower and sees these. She went to. Health care as crisis. You know she's of a cancer survivor. And that's a vessel we're here for a week here to help musician does not have their stress people. In the community not held as stress of DNA in a hospital bed. Well going to the hospitals have to shell out. Mind that they don't have to say the mortgages and stuff like that this just. You know and it's outlet on singing the blues song now without my guitar but it's truly important that we. All pooled together. As a community to go to a different level because. Most politicians held the golden fleece plan and bill health insurance and benefits for ever. You know also live this this stance that they they is no chance they don't get sick they have no idea and I get taken care oh right so you know you got to identify. That's an upper level they have to dignify it with us on the other side here of that mold. This is what's happening right William once again effort a thousand times this gives which you have well all be happy yeah I just I think we should go back to the the old days where. When the community came together for the personnel mistake you know is just the neighborhood that you know that field of community to where. You can just reach out. True the person's standing next to you believe an age of fear and all that but. Health care shouldn't be a part of that stress. In though. And in the way you're helping is is phenomenal I mean this is. Like you say you go back to. You go back awhile but for this one being held the healing health care blues are we in the seventh seventh 77 figure and if it's new Sokol doing the ribs is humorous one and only guys. Video does Cason donor reels it's a good friend of mine and I met him through. Hunt that well done lady owns the tattoo company what's called demographics. And she rents the quote a spirit now but back and they human. Oaks park. And the oldest would feed the masses never run out of food and and we couple pool poor barbecued ribs chicken and the whole thing so he'll be there good good good. Anybody else you gonna tell us about that's going to be helping out otherwise others in the music you got you gets rid you get. Just volunteers to does anybody do you have a number any. Contact information to somebody would like it was him I would like to volunteer 5034197093. Final 34197093. And I would direct you to. The person to. Help you with volunteers ship we always looking for volunteers. We'll have a community village which is just tables of defamation. For the community ought community outreach tables will have a silent auction. And a small raffle. Yet and to take a tomato is talent on the ticket say so is there anywhere anybody can donate if they're not able to make it on the 21 which is a Saturday night right right is there any kind of liner information that I guess I can donate go to health care. Thornton was a C a old dot org and there's a donations. Option on that site. And just donate to the health care for all Oregon Educational Fund. In their awards so up for the inner city blues festival. In Korea. When you first come up when you're in Oregon when you shall appear 1957. October 1957. On the union to assist existed don't. Oh my goodness and I and when a road open at Vista don't come into those canyons and CN mountains you know coming from Louisiana and I was going to another planet man coming here as with different it is. Mean it looked so different muscles tonight. Was funny story about that is that. The Afro American supporters. Came from Portland to Denver. And then it Tehran embezzlement we got to Denver. My dad was already out in Oregon and isn't this brother so we got to do and drop the porter's new Sylvester Shaughnessy or use our relatives of services and Portland we see you know oh okay coo woo would be happy to see you so when everybody was finished. Eating and stuff. Supporters would come and get it's multifamily. Take us back to the Pullman car. To the state can dictate this stuff like that somebody in his welcoming we do we do no way in through union to Union Station myth that's good memories men as soon as lust and community to Whitney did when got to give back to. You know they probability that the 1% in line in nine you know and ask quite a spray it. I could almost deal with. Fifty feet deep. Oh yeah. I don't want to sit and mining math. That's a big pesetas to have a difference men and understand what when they say the 1% also owns 75%. In the you know and then the rest than 99% gets to show and share they other 25% yeah it's not a lot of left forests you don't want they'll buy the that we although grow up to be older people in and I thought I saw my dad. Put on his black sued million times. And leave the house and and I and I am I am my dad now. I'm putting on my salute you know at 72. In unborn to celebrate his life and I'm going to have to feel good. They're devastated thing is some home have been long illnesses in the spammers have been devastated would health care. You know also besides the loss of a person. Goes to debt. You know somebody's got to take coming out of that hospital and not knowing if you have a whole year olds who loves going back home has been taken if they vote to. Retirement home the home has to be. The test by the state right or mortgage against it so then. The widow of the would erode. Ends up not being able to keep the house so. Is this just. Really really a wonderful festival would get the word out bring people together to dance and how fond. But when they leave there this humming. Hewitt and healthcare blue and so that's that's a win win yeah it is gives us on the same. Button. We have to take this first step that's first step is to do something. You know one of them you know you're injured are. Are for doing this product is we also at our store is my son. System. Excuse me just came up five years he's 21 at the age sixteen and that his self some lymphoma. And so he what you can't tell me if I think to myself everything that I put my 55 year old body through. And my son at fifteen in its cancer and in so then it was the next summer after that my wife with breast cancer. So. Once again from our not come from Micah it wasn't for the company yes you know if wasn't for the company I would. Have lost my house yeah I would have no idea how is going to be paying the rest of the bill. For either my son or my wife and I am so as to something that I've always felt this come this country is rich enough. To help its citizens deficit this is hungry so it's just something that's. Is near and dear to my heart so I love what you're doing I appreciate it.
