This is metro scope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program and your blocks of if you're a treasure hunter you're not gonna wanna miss this huge media event coming up. It's the northwest's largest garage sale and Vincent sale and I'm talking today with Damon both on the owner. Hey there David how's it going. It's going real well we're getting ready for another. Big girl itself well let's talk about it tell me about and the northwest's largest garage sale invented cell when the coming up. It is coming up April 21. Unless Saturday the storm days sale. From. 8 AM to 5 PM these are current events that are the gigantic community events. It is getting bigger and bigger wherever the third bill to. While. So you're just into before. Yes we have expanded into our third building and we're starting to fill up in order everybody loves to come. So their stuff there because. They don't have somebody in docking you know try Asia bathroom. In no order you know when their house or whatever and in. Know a thing without being under per cent safe nowadays. What single moms and stuff like that they feel they're safe and in a good in that atmosphere. And there's plenty of shoppers don't have to waste all weekend in the rain in the coal. Yes it certainly don't have to kind of come up with the idea of having a garage sale this time of beer is a little bit daunting because that could be pouring rain could be snowing. It could be a cut but now over the you're having the big money inside the car count even senator. Yes. That's great so tell me about the history merger come up with this idea. Well in 2000 eighths. We had a business. And of course the economy crashed and it took our business with. Literally. Over. It feels like overnight but you know it was a couple of months we went from. Making good money to. Making six dollars or eight dollars so. We were we were Lugar analysts we were. I actually put a container. One of the big shipping containers that are church. In the back of it and that's my pastor a couple of my. Household goods and it because we're gonna have to move into an apartment. Because we're gonna lose your house and he. Just Austin that real life church set me down and we prayed. About. Things getting better and that everything would turn around and would. Beyond my side and looked out or. Some bless us then. From that day forward. It did. And we. Never put one piece of furniture and that container. Within a couple of weeks side. They have this site be. You know I grew up in Southern California. As a kid don't move to appear when I was fifteen so that appear forever. But there was no. There was no swap meets. Or. Outside. You know head outside so in California but he couldn't do that appears so. Trying to find a place to do it and it took us. Probably a year to figure it out next came up with Portland were destroyed itself and we started. Over import limits the Expos senator and we kind of grew out of that and move over to the that it Clark County events center. And that's. It's a huge complex that. Pool whole Lotta people Lotta people selling. Blocked a parking and don't have to ship a member. Read up lesser rather ever but. We just in only nine years ago we started this and it's my family still running the whole thing my two daughters and my two sort of loss. And and don't forget about him. Then of course the leader of the whole show is. My wife Kim and she literally put on. The whole thing. I work. Monday through Friday. 6230 is operating engineer at a mental hospital. So dissident. A million dollar. Process this was just something that community could do and we could actually. Afford to live in and move on so Tim runs this garage so I take off. The week of the garage itself helped set it up and no logistics that the that the complex there enough. But she contacts everybody. But arranges everything organizes everything in. And so as a lot of phone call with us. Let the on Kim's intentions are good when we keeper up. So let's talk 2009 or thirty years also so back into those nine was first started how many vendors and you have. We only had to when we started it was 200. I think we actually started. That. The setup day what was. The day before. We started with 200. And people were hearing about it and coming down what there are steps people we're losing their analysis. And so they were selling stuff that the sale I mean there was quite a bit we actually. Gave some free spots the people that we're losing their house because they didn't have any money that they were in the same position we were at the year before. So we we gave them some spots and we ended up. Filling up the whole hall which was spoke 270. Spot. Let's fast forward up suit up to the present day how many you can have this next to the next event on April 21. We're well over 600 wow cookbook not some pretty good growth. The other bra they brought in some food vendors so people will have to wait these huge lines for food. There's planet and we opened the third buildings so there's more area to walk around so it's not so crowded. It's it's a fun day we play fifties and sixties. Rock and roll. You know be exploited them. All that kind of stuff some people just walk around step in their fingers doing a little better than. Walken alcohol looking at items and in some of them don't even come in to buy they just like to browse you look good. You know it's a good Saturday thing especially if it's Raymond. And but there's a lot of good field. So there's all kinds of tools meant Kate's. Kids clothes. You know there's some some people like it's you know just like any other garage sales you know they mark their own prices they make their own money. All we do is. Put the event ought and so people can charge what they wore in your dealing with individual people so some people do charge. You know. What I call retail. And then some people are really really cheap and they wanna give it away and I always tell him at the beginning of the cell if you wanna sell something. You have to bring it down to approach somebody can buy it for so. We we have truly affordable things. Dollar fifty cent in order. You know there's also the antique and collectible. Dealers that comment and then they sell their stuff. You know they they know what the price of that stuff is I don't but. There's all kinds of stuff and there's. The re purpose people that buy stuff. From one cell and bring him back and re purpose that in this something totally different. That's kind of my favorite thing now is the watch people bring stuff into the I remember that of police. Around they want it left to look at this thing is unbelievable. And you know they put their heart and soul of that stuff and you know it's beautiful furniture that you know we thought and three or four items for a house. That's a great we're talking today with David buffalo owner of the northwest's largest garage sale invented cell which is going to but the clerk Kenny events center on Saturday April 21. Just live a very short time from now. But David tell me you re run the gamut right from people who are really just having what would be considered a garage sale. Up to some really high end of anti vendors. Yes yes there's there's multiple people. They all you know it's if that's what's great about this sale is you know you can see at all. If you drove around to ten garage itself. And got out of the car walked looked around. But I want it back on the car. And by the end of the day you spent twenty dollars and gas. You've got twelve things break a mature those twelve things really work. Where you come here it's six dollars to get him. And we have 600. Spot that people are selling stuff that maybe. Twenty of them you ain't gonna want it but you can blows but as rates through their spot are their space and go to the people that you're gonna buy stuff for. So it's like going to 600 different garage sales all the once. You know hopefully he's OK I'm into. I'm into it. So we are dug one thing I'm doing it for lately is unlike old vinyl records give many vendors that do that kind of stuff. Beaulieu the others. There's five or six guys that. They come out with some. Excellent. Vintage. Vinyl records and I have. Probably have about forty of them in Aurora I grew up about. Air bearing age in the last time about these nice Jeremy. Mets condition. Album and they still got my old record player so. We spotted around the level. But what a what a that's pretty awesome. Yeah. Then there's all kinds electronic games you know all kinds of the video games that. And our kids grow out of him other kids who want. And the real vintage cars last pharmacy in a pong game that's what it's been years with the ability. Think I was fourteen or fifteen what I what I've played pol. And that's a the other it's pretty unique to find that stuff now you know it is. Tell me about the military discounts are offering. Well we we support our military. We we actually have a future shuttle while it's going to be very that it did two tours in Iraq. School. We can't give them a it's sort almost to get him for them and police. And eat first responders that they have might be. We want to respect the men and say thank you so we church. Two dollars less to get him for them. And kids twelve and under are free but we you know we want this a family affair where you can afford to take the kids. It's just an all around fun experience for me we get emails. And phone calls from people saying we have the best time. There and just wanna thank you for doing such as you know an excellent thing and I have to say. They give it to him because she's more in this state in this forum my little idea in my head into. The big place that is validates. I can just imagine people coming in with their pick up truck emptied and leaving him with their patrol. Quite full. Yes there are people that there's people that come from. Wall. And they come every single time. And they bring it to you hole and they still that you all. Had they bring it back to wherever it there rat and I don't know what they're doing what purpose it's I mean the every single cell there there are. They pick up all kind of helpful purchase. It's amazing what what people find is treasurer's. And a great. Or they'll my wife Kim love this couple work. And if she is that they. Tupperware. She. Has way more Tupperware than anybody audit. That's certain things to us the fire in the field Tupperware and so while likes camping and fishing gears so he's out trolling that. We all love to shop too so we. That's what we do this so I don't have to go wrap around my bring everybody to me. Yeah that's that that's a good idea see if it's if it's of great benefit for you. So you don't have to undo the pick and drive enroute. That's right it stays heavily so we still go around to some sales you know it whether it's you know it. If we give out walking around for 1015 minutes of there's nothing there you want and then you feel kind of bad the other tellem. Thanks a lot didn't buy anything. Now. How about that early bird special receive got a special luncheon. Yes we have that early bird one hour you get in an hour before everyone else would teach you plenty far ahead of them. And it's. Seven until 8 AM. And it's. Twenty dollars. Beginning at that. And of course you can stay till 5 PM doing that. Well that's a that's a good deal can you then you get everything first. All right he couldn't come across. You know I've had people buy stuff and sell on eBay for 8900 dollars I've. There was some guy that went in their bottom old beanie baby and I thought if he goes can you believe this and that was just the simple thing. And he told me the next time you saw me. The that it will tell me how much utilities cities so that they any big for 12100 dollars. Larger cubic. Well I thought but Lyle. And I was like how would you know what they need as well I just kind of look on my phone for different things look good up and see where things go for. A solo while that's a good idea. Well besides the BB BB tele about some of the more unique things you've seen come through the garage sale. Well I've seen you know what. That's the bold trucks. That people. Turn into actual beds were full sized bed real people put in their house that was one of the really cool things. Being. The. There's all kinds of OR TP 2 am I it's cooler erred in ice chests. Where it opens up and you have from the topic near drinks. Let's that was cool. That is very cool that would be all right now Star Wars soul on fire. Yeah there's a lot of Star Wars guys that felt the seemed old baseball glove this. From the fifties. You know I like this locker room look at that stuff. I am personally button like an air compressor. With the air hose with that a staple lurk there and the they'll go and we're 220. Dollars for all of that. And it was the best but I mean that that they'll go alone was to earn tornado box. And now baht eight stainless steel huge. Guess bar BQ. With two tanks. And this thing is stainless steel with a drawers and all that stuff like that it was. But at least fifteen billion dollars no what I paid our knowledge work that's this deal. There was some that was good that was clever six filled back. There was also a summary missile that they had a couple of times they've sold. Cars that are they actually buy the spark urchins spot. And put a car and there in the special than 97 mustang convertible. That day. So that it Tuesday you can really you can find just about anything you want to find there. That's what the are there and do you still have more room for us to for sellers. We are about quote we have Blake. I think she said about thirty. 3132. Spot in the last bill would and then we're completely sold out. That's that's great congratulations on having such a gigantic community events. Policy it's a blast we like to help the the the community we have a softball team. That. Pollen stuff so when you that your hands for everything you walked by and you don't know what to do with that. We have these softball girls that are coming around what the wagon to put their stuff from there in the attack get there and it goes up store holding area and you just give a donation at the end of the the day and so you can just keep shopping you don't have the take trips out to the caller you know back and forth you can bring it all over there drove your car up when you're done shopping. And load it all up and if they're big items though the stats with a softball girls hope loaded up. You can't you can't beat that. Events that set a wonderful support for your community. Yeah really goes a long ways people really appreciate that. And we've we tried it we try to help out as much as possible and we actually had a vendor. Her husband died one week prior to the sale. And she was going to she's had to do this sale because they've in the ocean and everybody. To make it for the next month. She just called in the recent you know you don't have to do to those I really do you know. But. And what we did is this she ended up signature could do it should just it was it was just too rough is. So we have all the vendors. I walked around with a bucket and everybody donated into the bucket. Than me and Kim matched that we favor over 2000 dollars mile. Yeah as she was ecstatic so we completely willing to take care of the the family and we call one big family that. That so there you know your part of the family when you come out there we try to treat Cilic family. You know we've we try to make things as easy as possible. It is to get in and out. You know load your stuff in and buys stuff but. All the things we candidate. If somebody's. Having problems please come find me. Not RS format now OOP as much as possible as I came into. To get the items you want to order you know you're having problems where you can't walk or whatever it is. We try to do it but you can bring wagons carts. Not huge carts they got to be able to walk down all in the run into people. Shopping carts as if people brings shopping cart buys stuff. But the back back Kim. You know intro stuff like that's kind of beat this. To me about what's unique for sellers when they've come and enjoy in the north whistler describe cylinder and tell what you need for the sellers. Well. We have them come in the ninth there the day before they have all day the day before the setup there's stuff. And they're little we called a boom. There are spots. We have all day to bring an end and set it up. Then we supply you with it over 7000 to 101000 people to buy your stuff then it'll. One of those persons that 101000 go out something you have so I've seen people at 1 o'clock come up. And say I sold everything is so well I guess you can go home. With them do you ever get a full war and chief. And all that that happens a lot they just go out you know in there ask a good deal when they literally. Go out but I want to clock him there on their way home and that's good. In my reading this right that all of your sellers keep 100% of their own sales. If you'd every dime they did they just were on the spot from us that's 55 dollars for the spot. And you know there's a lot of advertisement. And all the other stuff but we've spent a lot of money on advertising here. And we put aside and they'll all over. The city and pick them all up. When it's done so we don't leave any. Garbage out on the streets. Then we supply them with good music. Just a great time in a fun time. There really sounds like a pretty awesome event. We try to make it that way. And any duties if you Duma couple times a year tolls but the other dates that you do these big sales. So we do it to every April July and November. April 21 learn excel in the July. Seven. Is going to be the next one after the and then November 4. So when it gets cold needed some Christmas money. You know that's what a lot of the vendors that are sellers walking around they're buying in basic premise is just the blast when we'd do this. So day. End up getting a spot. And we actually take pre rinse it raised just relations. That the sale and for twenty dollars or hold your spot for the next sale be it. July here November but we just keep doing it over and over again we have a lot of repeat. People that by itself would bring an Acela. Let's go I would imagine some vendors probably command to sell stuff they sell a few things and they also by a few things so they're actually leaving with more than they brought him. They are asleep. A lot of room bring a lot of stuffit whom they literally with a lot of stuff but. You know there. There. Happy we just try to make this just so fun community event where you can comment. And get bargains and deals and you know maybe I and then see if that's where you wanna be you know. And nowadays with the rustic look. All I kind of stuff they. We have quite a few vendors making stuffed or about. Well David in the lessons few minutes 300 to still assuming all the details about what I need to know about the northwest's largest garage sale invented cell when where and what time and. Both the northwest's largest garage sale and did so and I called the liquidation. It's April 21. From. It AM till 5 PM seven to 8 AM is that early birds and you can get those tickets right up there at the when you get there. And we have. It's six dollars to get in its. Four dollars for military and in the first responders. It's that the park on the events that are 55 exit Marion only fifteen minutes to cross the bridge to come from Portland. And now we know we have 600 plus spot that people are selling their stuff for. He deserves a great time this is going to be bigger and better than ever. This is all you know we every year it gets bigger that's awesome every year well congratulations.
