This is metro scope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program. I'm Gary blocks of if you're thinking to yourself you know I wish I could put on a red dress go to a fantastic party can help raise money for a couple of very deserving charities. Well listen up. On the show this time I would like to welcome judge Kemp and judging is officially the mouthpiece. Of the red dress PX party can judge for a cup but for. And Gary I thought the mouthpiece how did you get that to that name. Well that's because there'd been around for so long. Couldn't. Affiliated with the organization since 2003. And a variety of capacities from. Just a volunteer volunteer coordinator. And I past president of organization. I guess technically I'm in that important a narrative. But this weekend marks the army the mouthpiece. Let's check in in an endearing lyrics. Yeah okay so though the red dress party is called Portland's best party tell me about the red dress party what is it. Well it's so it is and nonprofits. That is so Ron nick created organized by an all volunteer force. There's seven board member loose and committee members. Bad job creating it seemed. And build the party based around the three. For example this year's theme is we can read and so you can kind that they could that is. Because about twisted the sexy version. Where is sort of 21 where everyone to attend the party. Have to Wear a red traps. Everyone's. Everyone's so you'll see all walks of life for. All body shapes all gender. Non conforming. Primaries. All of that he ever trust party. So is everybody has to Wear red dress who comes to the red dress parties everybody invite and. Everyone is invited release separate one with 21 years of age and older. So is it's it's not do anything. Oh definitely not we have for you a large following doubt about. Allies income and support that they are. Their fellow LG BT friends and family member whose. I can tell you bad that I have pretty. Some great friends. Parents. They responded to actually yeah I gate and so they go to the party and support him. So it's not too not specifically eight tailgate party. But a lot of gay men and women go and Lotta straight men and women go. Yes how it's open to everyone. So wind and where is the red dress party this year. So they here's parties may nineteenth. And it is Indian memorial. Well yeah the lower level. That's a that's a big venue. It did so this is the biggest one so far. It's still larger space so far and so they have trouble womb there's going to be some interior stations. That's what some outdoor spaces. That will be utilized in this year's party. So as being billed as Portland's best party so what why is that tell me about what I can expect when you walk through the doors of the readdress partly. Chirp. So that you our lives for and we recommend that everyone take. Lipitor Cooper or light bringing all or any other mode to get to. Veterans memorial coliseum. Because parking is it's not going to be no more we don't encourage people to drive their car it's just not really convenient mode. So when you're wry view will be wished away distributor believe in any case. To be a red city. And you'll see coordinated you'll see a a lingering get any tornado completely take Cowell. All of this is what I understand. We really did fatigue chills up to be be secretive group two. Incorporate these ideas to bring them out to reality. Bend your life. Proceed on Q you've got an option to room. Within the first hour the party is the VIP not a portion there's especially entertainment's. Pool bar. Plenty of non alcoholic beverages for those that do not sure gives while. Their food included. Mrs. Ford general admission as well as south VIP. Food is included entry get concluded with the cost of admission. And then around 9 o'clock. There are six DJ its impact this year we're doing something different where we have. An all female lineup when it comes to DJ selection. I'm that will be spinning throughout the night. That's a leotard he's. Isn't it really of a lot of fun. You know for those. Those folks that are not accustomed to you wearing a dress they're kind of like an amount. That were like. Wear shorts underneath it's more of a normal. Create a bit more security for you and usually what happens is after the first dude when they get scared they're like oh. I guess I made up onto trucks about nothing and then they were like no one ever looked at me. That. This. Thirty bold step out yeah that's right and people got ballot and go forward. It's it's it's just a great organization. I have. Some of my fondest memory is really hard jets looking out on the crowd and seeing on this smile. And then you never you know who you gonna run into you and your colleagues. Your professors. Your mailman. They're using your letter carrier I guess technically correct these states this century or letter carrier. Can be male and female. But it's just so wonderful event and its supports more because in this. And this year's cause is our rock and roll camp for girls. And also the the bridging voices. And both of these organizations to support you. Bridging course since it is a LG BT. Non conforming choir form you. And Bridget horses he's been rock and roll camp for girls. Is. Or. Girl's two pursuit of musical endeavors so we're we are about. Encouraging empowering youth to be better people in the future which we typically news. So part of the ticket sales in part of the attendance above the sales of their tickets from people in attendance go to these two organizations is that correct. Actually all of the fun to go home to the beneficiaries. No I mean no one on board received any stipend or anything for about their involvement with the party. In fact one of the biggest compliment we often receive. It's the fact that people think that we are professional party planners. And that's factually not correct. So the red are already is all volunteer 100% volunteer. Correct. That's outstanding. Yes I think drew to an end. That the crew. The board and committee members do an amazing job of putting on this event. Is it takes. Almost it's almost like having the full time job on top of everyone's fulltime job. I'm evil. Here's what does it take to do this. Well that's actually really good question. As a beneficiary you actually have to supply. Volunteers to. Help put the party on can they are do you recipients up the funding or for the party. They and so you have volunteers that will help pay each. Bill Walton some of the pieces for the party. You have volunteers that are needed to pick up items for. For the party in addition to working the night of the party in three different ship Tripoli. And then of course the day after when it comes to. Breaking down the steps in and cleaning everything up a it takes small army of volunteers. Supplied by the beneficiaries to help get this party our ground. I've been to the red dress party and I can attest that it is no small feat all of this the decoration and everything is so elaborate. And all volunteers put that altogether. Correct that's that that's amazing congratulations on that. Thank you very much I tool won't accept full credit for something that might my fellow board members and committee members. Are diligently and very aggressively working on to get off the ground this year. We're talking to they would judge camp of the red dress party which is coming up what does stadium to remain nineteenth. May nineteenth 2018 that is Saturday evening. So I drive to and memorial coliseum. Two questions here one is why a red dress and win this get started maybe you can answer those both of the same time. Sure it's so good organization started. Diallo worked really an organization that time but the party started back in 2000. As a small house party in north Portland. And and so smoker for prince got together and they just wanted to do something different. For house party. And so we you know. I think the first year there was just a small group of about fifteen friends. And then they realize that no more people wanted to attend and by 2003. They realize that. We've got something on our hands so. To listen to a fundraiser. So by 2005. The organization. I mean it's 501 C three organization. And so that designation excuse me and that's really when we were able to start. You know. Donating money back to the community that at this point to a human interest parties donated over 350000. Dollars to local charities over the course some true you know this is your eighteen. But you know. The idea of deterrence really is about. Mobilizing. The playing field it's not masculine it's not imminent. If anything in the dressing symbolic more than anything else just to come to uniform. When you look at you see everyone is wearing red in the very Shakespeare out. And gratitude. Is symbolic question HIV aids education and awareness. So that's where do you red dress came from. In response to Y tres. Tell you about some of the people and some of them did dresses you've seen in the past what do what do people where. Well let's say that I have about three counting changeable you do during Viet Mario now. Like I can do around wearing the same thing all all the time but that I. We have seen it you know people come in all dragging your hair and make up all that. We have seen. Especially when it there's. A unique scenes such as Wiki read. People will. Created their own. Idea of what. You know something from the Whitaker. But in red which would be right. So you'll see sequel and you'll see glitter you will see you lots of Chinese materials. You sometimes see very skimpy dresses. Moment a variety of individuals that attend the party. It is you really there's no shortage of creativity when it comes to you. Dresses it. The only thing you'd have to be addressed. If you really listening need some inspiration go to red dress PDX dot org and there's tons of pictures on their you look at all kinds of what people are worn in the past. Some good inspiration. You need. The that's about its impact on our look at the photos all the time just to see elkington. To a one Arab you know resurrected transformed from from red dress parties to pass or should I go shopping or pumping knew he. Jim a special closet just full red dresses Jones. And loan without Jeff shell on notre rumor but a hypocrite. Yet so my partner and I actually because we have been attending a party for so many years we do have. The red dress closet. And so in my closet this probably about fifty entrances. He is swallowed some brand new dresses that we know which sometimes long now to our very good friend. Just because I know I know sometimes the city can get kind of shocked out. At the last minute we try to you know stock up on dresses when we can't we can share them with our friends. I was wanting to ask you about tended to Portland probably does run out of red dresses at some point just before the party where what he was assured by sunwear are finding good good red dressed for the party. Moral I would suggest goodwill or. And hopper readers reply each. And that works. But crude will usually the best place to far and we're addressing. Beyond their years that I went and wore wore red dress live on the last minute as goodwill and it was very from the well you know well but are you came Kerry might get a and how. How much of a red dress doesn't have to be like you have to be you know full read again owner can be partially reds may be some I mean come. I'm thinking like Doris he's probably can Meehan ridden white giving them a second or music in the past. I'm Islam YouTube it's like three quarters ready you should be in good shape no no you sure you know no skirts it has to at least resembled addressed. That's what it's all about and we also have another nonprofit organization called the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. They've been a great partner with red dress. You know PX were there as long as I can remember. It is they usually work but the work and so if you do not have forward if you do not pass the sisters. Retro check. You probably you'll have the option of you know looking in the collection of other real dresses to choose from for your entry. The schools are lean. Yeah number gift that. Yeah more on their sister so yet the best be careful you don't wanna get your hands smack. Are there volunteer opportunities with the red dress party. There are volunteer opportunities Gary thank you for asking. End. That they can be found it very easily by going to red dress PDA or. Doubt or cheap and then click on the tab volunteers. And then you've been will be put in the registry of volunteers and someone moloch reach out to them. Can tell you do you tell me you're a little bit earlier that the you've been DJ lineup this year is all an all female. DJ Atlanta that's pretty astounding. Yes I think so too you know Portland has big huge range of DJ and you know. One of her DJ himself stormy. I give props out to him for organizing this year's lineup. And we just thought that you know is this is the year where we empower women. It's so why not a highlight that access. To our new with our organization. It's really great. I'm assuming there's other entertainment going on no around the party as well. Usually in the VIP a portion of the at the party which is the first power. There'll be some especially entertainment happening. The rumor has it there may be some mutant magicians. Roaming the parity. I can't confirm or deny anybody on the that it all going to be a surprise. Well that's half the fun is you don't really know what's going on until you they're just put on your red dress and get ready to have fun walk to the front door. And actually. Where people get tickets to attend issues were addressed party. All there's actually several. Pop up events that are happening around the city some of the bars. He will. The host big grit trash. Giveaways. But probably the best place to get tickets is online it. Spread trust PX stat ORG. Do you expect the part of the sellout. You know it's a large venue. So I can't. There would be great if we did this. That would mean more money going to the charities but no no I don't think we've ever officially sold out important there's always the first time. And they say that again this is the news of the largest venue you've ever had the argument. That's pretty crazy imagine. We've had we've been and spaces up to 151000 square feet. But this time it'll be great at the party is rare because it's been such a central location. Two. We can build up the numbers are really. You know make a donation. To the charity this year's have been significant. Have you been involved with the rigorous party and what drew you to. I've been involved go through address since 2000 and Lee. And it was all action or been involved longer bad because it back in 2000 when I first moved here. Confirmed to mind. A lot of people later who became friends because of treacherous. Had actually to volunteer. To help or complete except the weekend at the party. And I agreed and pretty much have remained involved in a variety of capacities ever cents. You must have some pretty great memories from all the years of being involved with the red dress party the other memory good Cherilus. You know maybe it's good memories to me it. They're beautiful blur because that's been to so many of the parties. A smear read things he has been that's smear Brett. But one of the things I just remember mostly just. As I mentioned before looking out of the crowds and seen that the laughter it seemed this smiles seeing Indian Chu warned that. Now that he's such a great and powerful memory. Which really you know contributes to the success of the organization the success that. You know these volunteers it's such an amazing job of creating an experience. And that's really what the red dress party's all about we want to create an experience. That is different than any other important. And yet there it is definitely different than anything else Moreland has its. It is probably the best party I've ever been to. I don't know what what IQ and these are able agree with combatant back. I've been to Q parties so. Maybe a bit I may be slightly five maybe just a little. Do you people they come back every year. We do we were really do. One that they and I like to do is you know at the beginning of power is just walked through and kinda. Take that impartial. Surveys. How many first time visitors how many return home. I guess we get and the majority of the people that come to the party are. Return. I actually gas. You know returning attendees. He can't just go once you're too little more physical. Since then there's also readdress parties and see how older recruits parties and and various other cities but you know we'd like to think that narrow here Portland ours is the oldest. And then the most fun. So all the other so technically originate in Portland that's. Well we think ours is the oldest but you know bat. It's debatable depending on who you ask you Seattle since they've been doing their part of why else. Then you also have you know the red dress party in New Orleans. They also do your rhetoric round. So there's yeah there's. You know competing theories about who really is the original red dress party I personally think that ours is the open. We can take we take the the claims that. Yeah why not you know this is this is the agent here of the organization HE tear the party. And had you know. I think they get the you know when you're eighteen years of age it's almost be they official emancipation age. So the party has survived. And has squirrel home. Promotes small little humble beginning to do it but I can call that the sexy beast it's adding that it is today but that's a so how can people get involved and help out the red dress party. Well there's certain volunteer opportunities. And volunteers are bread truck that I think I'm I'm not American I've failed out of memory because I probably won't remember correctly. But still that our expert people to the website in their volunteer cap. That's one way of getting involved. There's also sponsorship opportunities for businesses that I would like to. Get their name up there. There's lots of FaceBook post the Golan there's lots of clutch. Benefits to being sponsored that. Lash the whole year it's not just poor bit of bad. That's a long time to put this all together it's not doesn't tell the week before but no it is not to unite the party really it's stopped. No did the physical part itself and so as like 2 AM between 130 into him. But you know really. That doesn't really it doesn't end there there's also beat deep deep grief that happens with the members and committee members and sponsors. And then yeah I think really there's probably a couple months where. There's no activity. In our agreements were covering everyone needs a bit of a break. And then. That next fall. They start talking again. That's great. If I get planned and so molest little bit we have here just give me The Who what where women my for the Portland readdress party. So the red dress party. This year's theme is which it rented may nineteenth twenty people at the veterans memorial coliseum. In Portland Oregon. Tickets are available Blair. Tickets are available online at the retro PX that ORG. So since the theme this year is we can read it's kind of a Wizard of Oz theme how many of wicked witches on the west do you think you're gonna see in the audience this year. Well you know you have to ask yourself what you did a good which are bad which you know and so there was a question unique factor into your. You're you're you're good thing that number which you don't see. Well at the very least give us your red dress and get ready for a good time at the Portland readdress party may nineteenth. Yes indeed. We've been talking they would judge Kim Dae official mouthpiece of the red dress he exporting thanks just. You're very welcome very tense or wrath but your child. Mitchell's go is an Entercom radio Portland public affairs program.
