This is a microscope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program. I'm Gary Clarkson in on the show when I can I like to feature smaller nonprofits and our community let's talk about the keeps you grounded foundation. Plummet to go this time I'd like to welcome highly cold Kiley is the founder of the capes and crowns foundation I think I would be caring. The kitchen crowns foundation I had you on the show before it's been a couple years that reminds us again what is the key to grounds foundation. Vacation consternation and Dane nonprofits who where we provide photography services for kids and families of cancer or serious illness and special links. While Abbott has a special thing to those kids it as absolutely and and the families can definitely it's something that's as soon asphalt and so many lanes. How did you start this. I actually started about three years ago I had a neat photography business where I did superhero and princess photography for Britain parties. I saw the impact I had on won this one particular little boy and news that it was something. Meant for so much more and he had healing circle minus what you stressed that the store and for him to see himself strong. It was an absolutely incredible gift since I am. And so I a couple of later rain turned into a nonprofit in an all phones a place and here we are three years later. That is so great so wow I've a little kid to your first look at just love that and absolutely he is doing great now. A good you know it's it was such a testament to everything he'd gone through. Tell me about how many families you were targeting the photographing these days well. Had. Demand somewhere and Oregon and we have been doing. About forty shoots every three months or so while. And which is quite the increase in the last couple years. And we've been slowly building up in the first year we did about 25 year in year two we did 65 for the entire year. We've already almost knocked out of the park. Six loans and sell. And we've got a lot on the docket this year through high demand we are and in going national it's a really going national to boot wow when you do and I. Well we actually have started already we have our national too are coming up relenting in June. And we will be going to Denver and we actually did twelve chickens on her in February can never beta test and not went so well that we just we had to keep going our national tour launches in June. I'll will be going to ten different cities in a twelve month period. That's a big undertaking it is and slightly terrified us even more excited. Larry you do this you can have your own idea and I am very supportive husband and family in an area and they're the ones that. Nick assault fossil plant accumulated a genuine rock star on tour good. We just gonna tour bus in delicate yet to tell me about this process how how old is Stanley it given to to view and would come just to me about it. Yeah that's of interest and show. Our main sir wrestler called inspire such and that's similar mostly known known for and and if a failing wants to do and inspire session where they get to essentially stacked into their imagination. And if a child gloves saint back manner Superman or. And mermaids are princess says they're zombies or Star Wars where that is and if they want to. Get all dressed up a costume and have this unforgettable photo shoot experience. They would just go on our website and apply and are we doing here and organ Wiehoff fourteen shoot day's schedule from here to the rest of the year. There's plenty of opportunity for them to do not hear an organ but if they are. In a different state will be going to ten different cities so they can just gone on site and apply for whatever city their closest you. And who wants not seen the suit being issued a national tour rolls around that states and we would be in contact with found women. Schedule details and that's totally freaked. Freeh who counsel frank how do you do this country. With lots of support from the community you know the sheets are fairly extensive wish. Now says for example Captain America is shield is not cheap food and then have to. You know the shoot sometimes it rains one kid to kids I have kids without issue with eleven people are firm you know. Parents and all the siblings. And so. It's a very important for us to be able to include the whole family and showed the shift can get fairly expense of once he got in all the costumes and props that. And the prince that they get off to words and it's. We could not do if we didn't have donors and sponsors. You brought in a book and it has some of the most amazing pictures and and and you say you don't tell me about the photo shoots and cells can sometimes these shoots or not. He wins it's a superhero in like a big Gotham city's new thing but that in reality is not in Gotham city how to. How is it or not it's it's very unique because these kids. They're all going to something really difficult whether it's cancer or serious illness special needs sometimes they don't have fun. They've restrictions on mobility. On they can't leave their house they can't leave her hospital room. And so we essentially take confidence and I'm. We he. Take whatever you know what ever state there and whether it's you know their hospital room and we bring all of our. Gear to Dahmer expertise and we transport and then in post processing into whenever something that there. Photo shoot that's right so for example we just today Harry Potter shoot and when it's less hassle so much fun and a ands that she was taken in a parking lot outside of our warehouse shooting space. And see the pictures seen around there and diagonally and talks mean and hard courts then you know they're not in a parking lot and though it's a lot a humvee post processing and Photoshop and and being able to make it look. Re opened they look completely authentic thinking a bad it'll orchids it's tough it's not easy. And so it it takes a very specific skill set skill sets to. To make something like apple work. And but the kids may not the whole experience we it's so much more than just a photo shoot they get to play and interact and play fight and jump. We did one ninja issue where the kids are actually jumping off a trampoline into a phone it. And so we're able to take those pictures and transport and until this big ninja downtown city scene where they're fighting other Ninja's then. And I was all like Photoshop but they still. Were having so much fun while doing it and that's the whole experience he know it doesn't look like the end result. And during costume when they are how we provide all the costumes props hair and makeup with needed to and sometimes you bring in character actors. Or we bring in her own children also shoots we had a little. He knows little twelve volt drivable sleds mean we have won the we painted to look like a frozen. Little flag and she just she drove around the parking lot like a man man for the seat he was having the time of her life being health threatening. Her sludge. You know what what kind of reaction to the kids have once they see the finished photograph it blows their mind is that is they have no idea what's coming. You know we tell them and can show them pictures of what we've done in the past and explaining you know this is not what it's gonna look like. You're actually compete in Erin Kelly you gonna be here and metropolis are going to be. Wherever but it's. Until we actually see it quite got to meet you see here. And they it has blows there militants and it's. It's funny bit the actual shoots itself has really funny kids actually ran the ball but then. That's all they're a piece of it when they actually see the pictures and they get to keep and we give them this big twenty by thirty metal print. And as long as we have funding for defense and secure than the metal at prince so much better transverse from cost the warranty you. House and you know they keep so much better but. And they they just cherish that thing and is one of the most prized possessions and again it. I can't imagine what that would be it hadn't won a magical moment to see yourself as does Harry Potter and we act and it's it's unreal. And discuss we. We try to pull out some fun treks. But they're not expecting. And tents blown tournament. So. Tell me about the the process of of families getting to have a photo shoot how how is that process completed chosen so there's a couple of different ways people can actually nominate a failing so if you knew somebody that would qualify social and how special means. Or someone not had a serious illness and it doesn't mean terminal can just be something that child will live web for. And on the roster a lot of that affects their childhood. And you can nominate them on our web sites are very easy easy former line. And we essentially if they are approved. Contacts them on your behalf and say hey congratulations your Frank Gehry has nominated you for the amazing photo shoot experience and tell us more about it and then to go on to planning and or if you know you yourself. What applied for a shoot that in your your child you just go on and fill out your application to an end super easy and so we would be in contact with you and get the planning started it and get your one of our shoot days and and we go. In view of most of your shoot a pitcher warehouse space. I'm mostly Arcadia floors and how was an amazing flooring remodeling company and tired and they generously gifts in a studio spacing us in September of last year which. Was in massive game changer. I'm you know before with being an org and we have to rely on the weather and Scioscia to talk to be scheduled resettled and rescheduled until it was sunny and and is with these kids thus you know being medically fragile or you know not wanting to take the mound in cold it was really important to have somewhere we can do endorse so and we have a space to restore our costumes and mostly we do that shoots in tiger. And we have an indoor outdoor area with and are we have a new mobile Dresser or a network in the process of revamping. And such all kind of in within Turkey a force and home. But we also do you. They shoot at the hospital or do you them advocate house or you know whatever not actual or a specific it means that's. Really an important point for parents because they maybe think well I couldn't do something like this because my kid can't leave the hospital and you come to them exactly how we can as long as the parents' request Esther com. I'm hammer coming as visitors to got specific family and and how we can come into the hospital. Welcome restrictions to the hospitals have suffered earlier the cooperative and they are there reliance some so there's a lot of red tape and such kind of tricky. And coming in for specific feelings offense coming in for all the family friend. And now the hustle play and our super support and then look what we deal aren't as just it's a difference. It's different gender I would imagine there's probably to some restrictions to react. Working with potentially medically fragile children and that frontal children and a solemn. The politics behind and move. You know this is gonna complicated. So this should can be anything we kid wants right absolutely and tell me about some of the ones you done. Oh gosh. So we. There isn't done that we dead in Denver it was by far the most challenging shoots that we've ever experienced and it was my favorite. And as for a little girl and her name's Lily and we. Had a new story. I'm only did the shooting Denver and that came in covered. The actual shoots themselves and and they aired later that night and so and the Staley saw the issues that we don't on the news and says she called me. And just impala with an hour event airing it was like oh my gosh is there anyway that you know you got leadership for my daughter. And here's her story and it's it would mean the world to us and so early calf but let's do this thanks so we got in contact with them and we did her shoes and think just the next day and and Lilly is an incredible you know court after the doctor scholar she zero. And because she is the only person in the entire world to have all night effort diagnoses. And they actually they have no idea how she's breathing and how she's alive well and play you know that's the power of the human body and her body is figured out how to. Live with half a brain. And she was not actually starts to make it past a year she's seven. And so I talk to our board members as we never met this girl before and hadn't really talks are aliens up about about Lillian. We showed the different diagnosis like what what can we expect deserved one of the board members as general just. What can we expect and we do that shoot. And just like honestly I don't know issue probably be kind of unresponsive. And she probably blown tire of a big range of mobility. And I honestly don't know and so we end up doing issue is really random and the apartment complex and then lobby. And work got everything set up and she locks and and just immediately runs straight over to it and goes. Oh my passion for me. While this is the most energetic. And joyful bright little girl I've ever seen a Ashley does a runs organs and as that country think you so much to. And it it just blew my lot in and then she was instantly terrified but something so just something kind of clicked and she Allison didn't look like anymore. And then it kind of became a game and she started running around and then she found the apartment engine. And finger in the Sudan because she is obsessed with working out there who. And so she goes this Jan and and so funny because there's this sweet old man. Sitting there on the exercise bike and he's just laughing it's tough because I think he's watching this little girl was NASA unicorn Tutu on the elliptical. And just going as fast as she can and has this girls in us and any day in tissues is just the funniest thing. And should not get off. And so her mom ended up kind of toying with her a little bit and she responds really well to competition. And shoot and kind of taunting almost. And so I picked up on the kind of like you know Lilly. And hopes they can get her to come off but to exercise equipment if that I that you don't know how did you plot X. And as you don't know how to deal like less. And so I do too high dungeon that I accept the challenge to an end to that we have the full. Lesson on the floor but I bet she can do it looks like it's a that you can do like that. I've that you can't put your hand on your hand like this and you know trying to get her to be in the position and I was hoping to get her and and has been the image that I had to remind it was her potentially laying on the ground resting on a big in important. And so that was but the one image I wanted to with her laying on the floor connect cans in her head in her hands and and so we got. And despite playing with fire and she. It was incredible to see because her. Her months burger. Just dumbfounded watching this interaction with her because Lilly doesn't. Respond to people. She doesn't attach to people. And she doesn't engage with people. And to watch Lily just completely attached onto us and you know it turned into this mass of tickle. And she was just having the time of her life. And her mom's or just decide themselves. Watching this interaction with her daughter and watching us with her one. And watching you know the patients in the compassion and the experience that we are giving her was something that she never had before. And she's never had photos taken of this little girl before. Because they can never get her sits along and fruit and for us it's not about getting the cents a it's about getting them to laugh and getting into smiling giving enough fun. And then trading photos of him during. So it's as that was by far one of the most challenge. Sure it's because and I end up running on a treadmill for twenty minutes next door with my camera taking pictures which is a joke and a half fit. But the thing about it and say I just it was a loud Brian and Allen and when we walked out the car. We isn't possible plot and my glut on our defensive end. But if he'd known her story and her. Just the shoot in the pictures that came of that and the experiences more and I'll never forget. We're talking today with Kelly cult founder of the keeps and keeps and crowns foundation. Which takes a very special photography of of kids who really could use a boost then what kind of special skills do you have how do you how him. How do you do that. Well it in her photographer I am. It's a very special skill set skill set towards. As a very special skill set is that he's cancer and I know very and that is required to do something like this and we are very small team because it's been a very difficult journey and finding. Volunteers are not are capable of doing this with me. Content and now we've got a good you know sellable team and who I'm totally confident their abilities to do this with me and so we're essentially. Let me I think there's about six of us that are going to be going around and doing pretty much everything an ass again volunteers who come on in great. But until we find the right people are scanner you know do it all and get it done and it's a very. Very unique skill such as because the photography aspect of not. It's so much more than you know Phillip photography earned our maternity or babies are weddings and. To be able to creates. An AuthenTec. Image of a child dressed up as a superhero in a place that they are even didn't. I'm meant to know how to Photoshop. Correctly in a way to make it look like they're actually bear. Now all the pieces. You know. And typical piece of time in itself and defend their so much more not as well here working and pretty challenging situations and it's definitely it's. It's a very emotional but very heartbreaking V. Things that we witnessed a sense. It takes. A very special kind of person to do something like best you. On a daily basis you know put yourself. With fees gambling is fun and to be a walk alongside them as they're going through an interpreter available for growth through. On and to be able to have compassion and empathy and Hughes. No the right things to say in the right things not to say. But then patting the emotional stability yourself to be able to go through this and cannot melt into a -- every time and then. I'm going to be so it is it's very heavy stuff since. To be able to put her love life and keep going and not let it. Can encroach on your personal life is simply impacts all of the time I will never be the same after all of us. And which I'm grateful for Reitman but to know how to compartmentalize and move forward. And not you know kept stock in the past but to be motivated by all these kids that we've mats. And enjoy the are bringing to their lives right the joint or bringing and the impact they're having army families that's. Again in artists so much more than a photo shoot they are so many. I'm amazing. Point of impact. That these photos. Tell me about some of the good things that the parents CPU during and after. Well. One thing I've I've noticed quite a dance and it's. When that went all saddened Diane and good families talked to us and our daily reviews are faced a change our. Or whatnot and we become feeling a little obviously weighs in on us. When you walk alongside a family losing their child or going through something really difficult to me. You know your. And so. The house of sand you know we just had our calendar and two weeks ago and we had three fairly common do you know personal testimonies and that was the recurring theme was that. The ladies behind this organization you know its. There's so much more than just photography the way that we've kind of impacted. And ministered to their lives. On that. You know we've. We go in the hospice photography so we go to their house and we take pictures of armed with their daughter with our son and when they take a body. And since you know as they're. Turning would say you're just is due to Europe with. With the family in perhaps the most difficult time of their life down in your. Photographing. Yeah we we can enact a final and photograph those you know those last moments the other. I'm goes really sweet tender moments and then being just with each other. And moments of their gonna wanna remember. Death photos and looking hard to look at sometimes they don't wanna CN burlap now and then but you know five years from now. Dot is going to be huge yeah. And then for the memorial service to be there you know you wouldn't really think of hounding someone photographing memorial but that's the last thing that are gonna play it for their track. And having these photos. It gives them closure. Closures are a little white right word but it hopes from he'll have done and Norton. I had multiple families say thank you so much for being there and photographing rest and we do video to sometimes. Herman because they it's a simpler for the and the car remember any minute and and to be able to go back. And listen to all the stories and listens Hume. You know on the testimonies and things like thought that that is so important for them in the healing process and just can't. So remember for years. We were in the process of building albums and books for the fairways other memorial services. I'm just another way they can actually access it. Then whenever they need to him when the time is great for the ignorance and other family members that can go back and say I'll look at her as also. Exactly how frozen up that was a magical moment what a great member you know we we recently just in a photo shoots and for little girl in holly so we deter shoot back in no. I want to you as they didn't. February and early with the notion of February and her memorial was an April. And when we photographed the memorial. Her photo shoot the pictures from her photo shoot birth everywhere. I thought memorial. The program cover the you know display photo displays. And you know that was. You know from the daily testimonies. That was the last time that they were able to see her look like her easy and it's very shortly after and you know her health declined fairly quickly and and for them to how fat is huge. For sure I'm Derek you know about some in the know remember forever and to see her smiling. On that day and that's something that is never gonna leave me. I Wallace remembers hearing these families talk about how. These photos. Back in uncle saying this was the first time I seen this child this is the first limiting my child's smile sends explains eaten or they haven't. They haven't had fun like this for months. Or they you know thank you so much for giving them the Socrates is being kid you know it's not think about hospitals and treatments and you know for the curious to be there until the first pierce and I'll be thinking about insurance payments ands. You know everything that's coming but to just be even dare not moment with their child and their sibling who happens to be there's a feeling that's huge. But wonderful piece to a we have a lesson that we have to let us know how families and come photographs taken word ho economic event. The snow up to honor web sites which is capes and crowns dot org. You can go on and nominate or apply it. And if you know someone that you own lives not in Oregon. They can also check up a lot of science all of the national tour information on the appear soon. And that's very easy nominate or apply on the web sites and you know if this is something that's your listeners our interest in supporting and donations are really the only way that we're here. And donations and sponsors the shoots like I shutter pretty extensive. The average it costs about 300 dollars once the dolphins on and just precautions and props and printing. And so for more help we can get the daughter ever to ever single dollar helps you can make donations on the lips that yes you can't.
