This is a microscope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program I'm Gary blocks of on microscope this time I would like to welcome a dynamic duo brother and sister team known as Brenda Ferris and bearing Robinson's. They are help team remedy guys ultimate scope think hero. Thanks so much for cabinet I'm excited but let's let's get started by First Lady you're really know what orchard or your brother and sister but what's the story here wonder what's going on let's help team Brenda. Well IA we both grip on her wrist then. Thumbprint Richard the only new gene I raise my failing in Salem and I'm new to the coast. She won them and you Jeanne. And we decide to do something kind of bugs into a rest together back in January we can get them more element layer meant. I was wasn't just the two of us I guess dynamic deal Clinton how we have not assuming for the sun. But I'm Brenda Ferris lives and their Mesa, Arizona and a couple of years ago she found some pretty devastating news which I think actually compare from her than from me. For anyone to share your story that's. Yeah I cavaliers Nadal IA found out that I had breast cancer. Which anytime you get cancer and you get that that note that this is terribly devastating. But I found in an audit. Way AF LY odd situation that I had cancer and I felt like that would be pretty healthy lifestyle. I had excited eaten well all I didn't have cancer in my in my family and so I felt like he was particularly devastating do you find that out. And two to figure out what to do about it. And I'm before I had cancer my husband I have bolt research a lot about cancer I mean boring knew I had cancer. Regarding research a lot about cancer and I thought. About it to somebody in my family it's probably are right scope implemented gonna need the information age and that little bit I know the person if you need Whitney. We lose regardless I knew I had. We're winning our heads pampered and I was able to put some of that information you've. Got everybody get down when his diagnosis again. We end up 2015. So about two and a half years ago. I found it had breast cancer and I did have a mastectomy at the beginning of the next year they have with the radical mastectomy and kept the limped out to go with it. But the lymph nodes had already broken open a bit. Cantor is traveling through my body it's going to believe this experiment and if you're aware of that then you know about the lymph system is altered a whole body but once that gonna get into that if he's traveling and traveling. I've got that traveling through my body I have to fight it every day. I also found out that my cancer is not receptive to chemotherapy. Cell well knowing I don't have chemotherapy is an option and I get cancer traveling through my body. Then I really needed to buckle down and fight it every day with all the resources that I have I have a very slow growing. But aggressive cancer test so when it comes back. With a vengeance. I need to be prepared to keep the rest my body healthy to be able to fight its. So are you on a medication right now. I'm not on any medication in regards to like chemotherapy I do you take an estrogen blocking drug. Which they do frequently put breast cancer patient on. Hemming and taking a lot of supplement feminist and I every searching extensively. To help with my specific type of breast cancer. I probably take about fifty fight till the day mostly supplement to help me with all would be cancer challenges that I have. What what is your life like been since her diagnosis. At first apart it was highly challenging it's would all knew I was not a person had done that very up and I have to live differently if we pain free life without a lot of physical challenges and so for me I really had to buckle down and realize this just something I have to fight I asked to. Grab this fact that this is going to be my life because. I do have cancer no we don't have cancer felt right to our bodies but normally are immune system takes care of it but for me. I'd you have cancer and I have a everyday and I need to fight it all the time. So I changed my life I L I N and other chemical in apparently healthy lifestyle but I gained extensively and then. I exercise every day expect very important to. Open up the pathways. For the enzyme that can go ranch and shut down cancer. So I exercise every day. I religiously follow. My diet regime which type of research extensively about it looked unbeatable beneficial from my type of cancer. I did get my supplements again we've reached her heavily and none of this is going to be the best tight. I get sunlight. Because vitamin. So that's kind of a whole new regime and I had a I find time to fit that in. Well really sounds like you dollar research and doing the right things that's great good for you or deletions. They have to thank you don't think you and I at half and I just felt like that's my only recourse I don't have another option so I need to reach surged and then you gotta follow through with it. And your knee I I want my motto is is is she your heart. Every bite they put my mouth I neither repeating my body. Aren't feeding my cancer. Everything that I need to. We don't say that I need to feeding my body or impeding my depression I need feeding my body aren't feeding my ADHD in my body argument multiples that the whatever your challenges. That is something that your and a feeding the which one you're gonna spend time feeding. I also find it harder to exercise everyday to eat right to. Yet some vitamin C to take the supplement 65 supplement the days and hard to do that yet but is it hard to have cancer. Maybe not live that long Havel the payment book which could have a problem not be able to enjoy my grandkids. Yes so my motto is huge or heart which party can lean toward everything in my apart which when he an acute. That's great model and you you actually missed my fear motto Brenda are you said Jun 09. And act arrogant about that and I appreciate it and that's exactly what they think I'm really not afraid to die I just don't want it to be my fault too. That's my thinking right right it's. Is that it we're all gonna help lead this rock somehow and I'm not afraid of that I didn't want to everything I can't he keep it from being my fault if possible. So I'm indignant supplement I'm gonna eat my good food I'm gonna get my exercise because that's gonna keep that hopefully if all goes well for being my fault thumping out of gonna take me down. But I'm praying that's not it. And it wasn't a Spartan as bargain to get down. I think that's right hand me down or don't want for the Spartan. Side of the Cahill to get into this now let's see if we're talking to new brand of Ferris and bear Robinson the brother and sister. Sister breast cancer brother's health announced tell me tell me the story of how you guys that started doing these amazing athletic achievements. Well we're McCain of visiting. Christmastime. Last year so the and it doesn't 17. And I am a senior for awhile and seen her since before the cancer. And so she shows of the airport and F I knew it was her as she comes through their PD expect. She looks different I mean is you can tell us even exercise and and diet and all things and in my first thought was you don't see just looking great you know fit and so during the whole Christmas visit we're talking about what she's gone through and in everything she flew home. And it was like a first week of January. Friend mines wearing when he's a warrior dash shirts which sound like fun had never done when his own front. So like your F 54 years old why not why not if that's why I I wouldn't say that. I'm good. I would say why or why. So I called friend and I said yeah I figured it really it seemed like doing this together and she said is she checked in her husband they talked about it and she's a jerk. But I realized she didn't plan on coming up in May you know I mean their budge is pretty tighten cancers such a money pretty had absolutely so I'm she said yes and I went trophy. Aaron let me interrupt you here for a second wondering red jacket my head unit because of the challenge I have with my cancer physically with feet. With the surgeries that that I already had whidbey. Changes up my body that it occurred because of the thirty day because the cancers like that what you think about that is that something that you feel like. My body is ready to do when you're comfortable with me challenging it in that way. And I get your blessings and you'll understand what kind of challenge of my body has not taken a beating up from the surgeries are hurting up three or four surgeries for their support senator Reid and I checked with him and he they galloped ahead right. In the end they want to deal with a warrior dash website they have videos and you gotta get an idea what you're going to be getting into and right so they checked in she said sure. I'm Georgia friend of mine and you know tens planes into Mason said I'm I'm just trying to get a little money to help pay her plane ticket to get up here. And when I explain the situation to some by the testing because he had me check for two dollars thanks that's cool so I suddenly what I'll put a teacher together so that we'll have a team Brenda. Handle which a logo on the back of the shirt. That was January the sixth. On January 8 and went to my job at Costco and and a friend in my that I work with host on somebody says kinda with Gil. Like all the other team you'll treatment too so at that point team Brenda was formed on January did. By January this is so conceived by two weeks two weeks later we had 25 people that said. They want to join us who in two weeks and now they're just like that sounds like fun and they want to rock and nobody knew Brenda. They just need to so it's fine they want to rally around when I was doing. By the by that time I realized made an accident or go home with a little money because she meant anything to fight so what's Dixon. 500 dollars a month out of pocket not covered by insurance and for settlements so much for guess there was some money. And a good friend Omar said we'll do a go fund account. Okay eleven and again who knows about it. So I guarantee of his website nice and a little thing office that I differs story. And they said. They called mechanism what Tracy very relaxed you a story. I did expect some very good start and let's also. So at the inland and yes a bit of a Florida legend Tracy Murray is awesome we and a very wonderful conversation with Tracy very. So the end of February and we she said let's get together there in Salem where he has worked out to two or three other people plus myself. And if you go to our FaceBook page. He intended recap this whole story I'm telling you tempering the story on that he could help team Brenda and FaceBook you can actually blank. To that area is still on there and so we did you on the day of the interview we had seventy. People committed to do this. Two weeks later when they were now at the end and we were up 206. Foot hole from so the first of march and a 106 a verbal commitments it is with us. But I also this Kara on the rare scene when the story broke on TV. People came to this that I have no desire to get money but I would like to support you and Andy and selling these shirts. And I saw on my gosh I'm in the teacher business with her husband threatened by all of the sudden all of sudden you. But from the sound asserts I've been a William Brennan. And poly or thought I over a thousand dollars and I'll send Brenda from the song served awesome and I and that's kind of how help team Brandan began. To form. On May nineteenth when we get the lawyer Nash of those killed 42 a match he followed through paid the money showed. And we and we had these very bright pink T shirts in very muddy environment thought. Everything you did the warrior does herself to right. And Brenda you Gloria de Su. I didn't worry about yes and it was exhilarating and one of the reasons I love doing it. Is because I can hand. You know they had two hander didn't take me down and I would hate of all of doing that run. Now with exciting you need to realize that comes replace my body was able to do that. Well let us that's great and the and the best thing of being supported by 42 other people all wearing a thinking teacher. Many of them had everything I mean majority had never met me I think they're probably only that one or two of those people and they were there to support me and that was exciting and in there there's what caused a breast cancer specifically but it was exciting to realize. They were willing to support someone that never even mad that they knew Barings enthusiasm was true and that he cared about it. Sister in at this that the top. What a beautiful gift. It was fun absolutely had a percent in one of our favorite pictures by the way that the posted that we gave you dozer we have somebody day in pages all along that we previously cool posters but. When they were pictures as a Brit I swore that as we left the storyline. We would do the course together. We across this land the other and there's actually a picture of us completely covered in mud with our hands on the Erica has across Islam and that's actually their path that is so great. And it's that stand together helping editor at absolutely in the warrior Daschle was just the first rate if this continues to drive so. We get back there where Daschle one of the guys that did the word ass with us his name is Casey McAllister. And once again I would Joshua go to rise up with Casey dot com is his story is true in me in as well he's done twenty Spartan races. But he would never have a word acts so we contacted him he says. Sounds innocent okay as I said I talk with a game. Commandment Casey but I had no idea doesn't do I do some reason the war doesn't mean like. So I I told him later or whatever obstacles I mean it even flinch scary it's blamed and I'm like this it's hard. And he knows it well it's any money. But I'm really hard. So then had to go to the Spartan brazen like OK now I understand why said that he thought that the so we got. We had now with the word ads and out the group and most of them didn't want to train. For the spartans because. I would tell anyone if you don't mind getting money and you don't brine mine running three miles you can do the wired actually not that difficult now. When the Spartan that's a different creature that I have had to have happened so I of the 48 shield. One. Besides myself Santa Estes Park and then one of the Gerlach costumes and I want to wish you well we had. Nguyen tan. So are reasonably easy win ten that did that Spartan with us on health team and it's not quite as anything teachers of the Spartan. Because it's a way different as a lot harder so what tell me until I mean how did you guys do. It's it's I saw some scrapes and you're when you're underneath their baron be as good as they just letting us but well now. It's three and a half miles. We had kind of made this mental goal to be done in two hours. But we stopped and took pictures and promoted our FaceBook page and saw the videos and they just took some time. And we faced under three hours. The one thing with that with the Spartan is if you don't complete an obstacle. You have to be thirty birdies. You know and I look if you thirty other pregnant or find out if any under any duck and that and I would give Brenda a huge credit because he at least try to. Every obstacle awesome I I didn't try to rope climb what I can do their plans I estimate the labor peace. But a so what is next for team Brenda there's there's something else coming up because it does not stop and no we. As we get going I'm a begin having conversations with people about bring this situation with cancer and now what she and I talked on the phone and I said. You know we're actually helping people and you start out with her and having fun and supporting her bet so we're kind of helping people here and so slow this is developed into foundation and in the help team Brenda foundation. Which is based in Mesa, Arizona even though probably 95%. Of its core base is right here in Oregon. An and I tell me all they help team Brenda Foundation's mission is to support all of those who have fought or are fighting the good fight against cancer. And educate the masses on how to limit anti cancer lifestyle with some simple as eating real food and doing some movement. Outsmarting you only to have balance movement but you can't leave her house and walk on the blocker we you know walk out my whatever. So as we look at our core statement. What we said we've lost a lot of people. To cancer and bone as idea and no word as all of my training in Canada Spartan all that was for Brenda. And it's amazing what you put your body through. For somebody else. So I just gonna meet let's let's do a little five K walk. And for someone you care about. So the city assail or he has this plan and we talked to the parks and our people their onboard with the it's you firmware from park in Salem across the bridge still Wallace marine park in the back it's a three case right. Their flyer says bring an odd bring your stroller just block so who worked harder the love and that we're called the love and run. And the fire they gave you kind of describes it if the word that seemed to money in the Spartan race was too restraining then just walk for someone you care about. Let's listen when the wind was later October 6 at the Saturday. And what we say that is that if you email help team brand NG now. For 25 dollars will take you you'll take care vigorous chase with the city and customize this shirt so it's specifically for the eleven run. And then hearing at those little heart shaped thing goes over your heart. And you'll write the name of somebody you know that is battling cancer. Tonight an idea for Brenda. It and referred to with important and you know those are however caught eleven run that's that's awesome. Did you is everything. Opinions. Go agreements are you gave it that bit and cancer a fact. Everybody absolutely what are you have it whether or let porn habit what are your spam amber has that we all know someone has been affected by cancer. So let's do a little something to help. Spread the mission statement make the movement go further. Do something for yourself eating real food dude the movement to come on out joined the cause. Beat part of the change be part of a solution that they want to spread the news about. Do you guys obviously. Before Brin is diagnosis this was not part of the plan so what's not what's. Motivating you to keep going. I'm only you only had to go and first this because my stroke a little longer insure. OK you are legal let me hear. And and again kind of goes right back to the point that again it cancer affects everybody my mother in law died such a challenging day out. A bladder cancer and she was aided by search and I have so much help me be the cancer. What's that disease have a lot of and I thought. Really what do you do about all. My mother in law that horrible that they seem odd that the people at the challenge of I've I've definite cancer how can you be same as she and they want to explain that usually aren't really to locate the source someone finds out they're diagnosed with cancer entry dates are. At forty later they'd have to wage they usually. You've got a little bit behind you a lot of time to be able to research and find out what you can do for yourself. But there is some time between the diagnosis and the time that this person's gonna pass away if that's what's gonna happen to them because. And that's the time of the gift of beloved because you have time. My mother in law within my house and we spent time together we log on each other we reminisced we looked at photo books should I pressure hair we talked about experience that's from the patch. Now with a connection that we never would have had this. If this situation hadn't come about. Contrast that to my friend that told me that's the cantor is the gift of luck but it beat a lot actually. Contrast doubt heard her sister died in a car accident. She was there one day. And that she wasn't the next two. There was no time to chat there was no time due Rehman net cash there was no time to let each other make up for challenges etc. and she told me that story I realize that is true. Almost always with cancer we have time to spend with our loved lunch and we wanted to spread that news to people we wanted to say. Let's kick this cancer where it belongs. And let's spend some time with those that we love so that's kind of what our mission is not an order eleven right as. But also. There until we what keeps you on the couple minutes. Why we did a clinic just a few days ago. And the clinics hasn't cost to mom and I realize that if I'm use that type bias of the cost than the distance from Brenda. So I just try to find a variety of sponsors. And I went to this gentlemen is what I was doing and immediately some connected. I learned later when was that he gave me a check for 500 dollars which paid every gonna cost this clinic of and and I now has several left over shirts from the warrior dash that I sell and I still have some in my car and I solos and telling you run out of those. And us so everyone who sponsors I'm like you do ever but some and a couple T shirts in an effort and he said. Yet there property management real estate company and and so I went he said you see that Gallup that one to ask him and I said yeah and he says. And she is two time cancer survivors TV cancer twice. And and I walked he says he's earnings Michelle and I walked past I don't know what size it was like and three teachers as I walked back in and I said you don't know me but your boss just called me get this team and she Burson two years. And realized. We celebrate as underwear so I would do this to rest my life for those kind of reaction because. It's the massive back in the church and Jesse your radio viewers that. We got this very cartoonish looking donkey in kicking position with the and it says kicking cancer in. And you can feel you know that. I don't think I get the image area right Brian Dawkins I don't yap at the brakes on the donkey has you know Nike has a Swiss women donkey. I thought nothing wrong but I watch this lady's reaction. And then this same gentleman since being attacked when we clay says hey there's this other lady that he knows he wants he's the vice president US bank down there in Salem and he says take one and her and again I never met this lady I knew I had a look to find her. And it was truly out for an income god moments that she's rarely at her desk. I was lucky to get to this one day. In a lack NSA you know you and owning and this guy can just and I guarantee gators are tour and again she says I don't know you make an eight yard. Her and she had just she had just finished being breast cancer. And so you know those two moments solidified demean it. I don't know what's in store for us but apparently were the voice for something happen so when we get our clinic Friday. I just recently ran a quote. By president Lincoln and the Gettysburg address like Gaby that program on the back that program is actually direct quote. From the Gettysburg address every you know it's four score some years ago we all know that quote from grade school we don't noted in the middle of the Gettysburg address. President Lincoln is trying to rally the people. We just lost 101000 people a very. Bad crappy little battle is very. Horrific and the people we're done with the civil war but it wasn't done. These are trying to rally the people he said we not need to honor the dead on this field by keeping the fight going forward. An interpreter is present Lincoln there but I stood there in front of this crowd we have at our clinic. With this list of two point nine names and I don't and one week in emails and I said these people can die in vain. We have to honor them by keeping the fight going toward their house to be a better way of fighting cancer. And and you know we are not trying to battle not into it doesn't work they do or the same that there are lots of ways to live an anti cancer lifestyle print. I'm in one of the most simple Brenner discovered. Was that broccoli has a chemical called soul for a fine and it. And key in cancer hits a forum. So guess who is a lot more direct feature probably got that. Yeah eat your broccoli vast right and it's a little little things that you can do for yourself just like that that you may not have known and they're easy just. How polo probably house them blueberry. Put Sony's supplement into your life. He is doing such amazing things. Coming out of of a very dark place you're very bright light both of you will think you're wonderful thing for her. We do that so tell me where people can get more information please go page premier place to go in basic cable give you the whole story and it's really simple help team brand. FaceBook will bring you can fight the good fight okay. Ankiel had it been a powerful learning lab bench. And I think I'm here to touch of the people's lives I hope that might story can get somebody else's life because every single person's story. Made a difference for me I gleaned from what I can each type caps a lot of other people and hopefully something I'd said in the past or now she can help somebody out through their journey each. She and I'm delighted to hear anything that I learn each item I'm not a bad oppressed rational that's just something that works from each. But if people wanna contact me on health team bring down underneath but. Or email address I'm perfectly happy to share whatever I have and I pray that we'll let her life. Well this is awesome thanks again be on the show and kill rate for I answered every right right. Mitchell's bill is an Entercom radio Portland public affairs program.
