And with that in mind we want to invite you to something we have going on can be a very soon. It's an electronics recycling day here at the radio stations of Entercom. We're having it on Saturday October 6 from nine until one we're teaming up with a green sentry electronics recycling and all you have to do is Phillip your car or truck and bring all of your electronics to be recycled here at the radio stations we are located at 0700. Southwest Bancroft street in Portland and all of our intercom Portland radio stations are involved including 971 Charlie FM 1051 the buzz. 995 the wolf. Maybe 23 kgo and 947 FM and 1080 the fan so now be a good time to be looking around in the garage or in those spare drawers and final those electronics or you're no longer using it and bring him to Entercom radio Portland to be recycled. Again it's Saturday October 6 from nine until one and you can bring it all to 0700. Southwest Bancroft street in Portland. And on metals go this time we're going to be talking to green century electronics to find out exactly what you can bring and will be diving in to find out more about electronics recycling on the show this time I would like to welcome Heather Graham. Operations at green century electronics recycling hither Heather thanks for having me tell me more about what you guys doing green century electronics recycling. Where are two certified electronics recycling facility here in Portland. Owned and operated for about ten years now globally. We handle business and residential chop off some pickups all kinds of. So anything electronic. Comes your way I play computer screens televisions. Yes pretty much anything has a core earn our way to contain a battery we can recycle and and how does that recycling process work do you break it held out there you treasury use a lot of great. Yes. As we all know you know electronics and technology today is being upgraded rapidly as we move through. You've new iPhone user and ends processor and our computers. And so we take anything that's viable and restated for refurbishment to anything man is times. Still marketable. You know to the people we turn to refurbish it everything we souls quarantined as fresh installs and windows ten. And were able to them provide it to people who. You know I don't at a much lower costs on who would not necessarily be able to afford it you know out of big box store. Small businesses we can set up in a whole offices you know for minimal costs which is really nice. So do you have a store on site at that how works or other people how to people buy stuff from me that are brief purpose. Now we do we have a small thrifts are re child lead at our northwest facility. And we also have an online presence. We spirits or Michael will call situations there are built computers they can comment and both can test out. On the we incursion contact our technicians directly and get them cut their wish list price point specs what they're trying to do with their machines and then we build them custom. That's so cool because if I can imagine there is just. Literally tons of electronics waste that would just go to the landfill where we would normally go in Uga is do you get to break it all down or re use. Literally times yeah. And it doesn't you go ahead a lot of it does get recycled but. Lot of major organizations aren't enough in the market to refurbish it in us a lot of things that would potentially be able to be re purpose and continued their life on. Will just get scrapped. Do you think about it okay assume me personally I have a laptop sewing and it's not workable anymore something like that I can bring it to you. Or business maybe is re doing their entire office of computers and that would that's compared to my one laptop. Having hundreds of computers that are being redone that's. That's a huge amount of electronics waste. It is and it's it's comforting to know that when you bring your laptop or an organization brings a whole DS tanner. And two or through green century. On the data destruction we'll have been automatically without any question. All hard drives are either over written and or their physically destroyed. EU as a consumer can literally witnessed that and re able to provide all that to everyone free of charge. Go to measure that's probably the biggest concern of anybody dropping off sale of a laptop or something like that is what's gonna happen in my data certainly kept Everhart Checketts told. And then you know if if applicable if companies are comfortable with and it and satisfies our internal protocol. Were able to operate that data. And repurchase those chats in how do you guarantee that to somebody who brings an immigrant. Well you know we have an amazing appliance on board. Tax. Riva custom tailor the overriding procedure. I'm to meet their needs and whether that's a one passer three past then it's applicable to all different types of drives and when you have. He holds I DE drives are SCSI Jack answers faster as they summon me. Speaking a foreign language to prepare for and food. Yeah I didn't they test the health of the drive to see if it's worth refurbished saying. When they're not able to be quietly just physically destroy them typical machine and literally punches a hole through the platter. And say everything is just straight and then it's scrapped it it's not able spears purpose and even if it's not viable he would still getting recovered for the mile okay. The other me that's my next question is if it isn't reaper possible that a word. If you can't read purposes what do you do with it how do you break it'll them. The penning amateur at times but essentially everything gets break broken down on disassembled. Into downtown Vincent. Basic components and then all of the different various types of materials are sorted out appropriately. I medal tying it she obviously plastics. So your board's going to ones fox and your cords and wires and power adapters are getting sorted. Ayman downstream. Is is vetted vigorously. Because of our two certification. Who's and then it's been sent to the appropriate. I'm facility that processes those types of materials essentially. Everything eventually winding up the smelter. The metal has recovered well sort of middle types are in the electronics. Oh gosh are kinda soon primarily goals here copper your palladium silver. So you couldn't the cold while sore yeah jewelry out of it you can. How exactly. Fancy chip or jewelry but I'm sure there's someone important in doing that out there who think something good something well Portland person when do. Toledo a what is what do you mean they are to put is that our two certification. Aren't sue. Is a stringent guidelines. CU. Opposite of sustainable process of recycling. It requires an organization to establish written processes and procedures for every aspect. Of their of their daily operations. It's one of the highest in our industry and higher standards right along there with he Steward. And oversaw overseen. By a series which is sustainable electronics recycling international. Avaya. Are there some part of part of our mission and help us navigate. Compliance issues and they really have a common sense approach which we appreciate. And we answered faster cache eight or nine years now. Well and is in the giving us certification is that difficult. It is very cumbersome. Yes yes as flawed paperwork spend on it nearly a third party auditor. Comes through annually. We conduct internal audits throughout the years well. And basically they they bear fired eight compliance they come through and they make sure that we are. You know it's hearing choose the processes and procedures that we have set out as you know as our business plan. I mean it's. You know there and they attract my downstream naming each and everything and send him taking yen is going out and everything is being sent to the appropriate place and that those. Organizations. Are also certified. And doing what they say they're doing so nothing it's illegally landfills are shipped overseas. There's no wary of small children just assembling things on each somewhere. That sounds like it's really important. It is it is you know the expression papers and it's definitely worth the end result which is knowing that. Anything that's not being her permission is actually can be handled in an environmentally sound way. And assuming there are two certification is probably the gold standard right I think South Africa. And greens entry is right there we're talking today with Heather Graham operations in green century electronics recycling. Don't ask you what what's the weirdest thing you've ever seen come through that one that to be recycled if anything that stands out. Well maybe some of the oldest things you mentioned some some weird formats. We definitely get some inquiries. You know vintage or museums found quit mentally you know we have a lot of really cool. You know old obvious hero Max in the popular something people seek out. Old typewriters. And sound you know audio equipment display the most fun. If you get to see all this. The various types of speakers in south that are just beautiful you know and so well manufactured. In constructed is whereas nowadays a lot of the census. Not as terrible. I don't I'm not in the medical field but we do not recycle items insurer seeing medical equipment so that kind of itching to see. You know what those laboratories us are using to accomplished. You know health care for us that's kind of on. So. The shorter list is what you don't recycle but what to list some of the things that you do. Take care of besides the obviously some of computer monitors and keyboards sure you any kind of business class that surely you've seen all year. Computers your monitors keyboards mice prayers telephones says times. Cube back up batteries are really important time IDC data equipment so a lot of servers and switches and. I see here. But presidentially you know we can pretty much take anything that you guys we take value you know you're in your audio equipment you're EG. Console appliances. You know we also double and universal wastes which is not my favorite but they're light bulbs in your household batteries which they're a nemesis to many. We do those things have a fee associated but to see them a lot in your remote controls and. In light fixtures. So we you know as a courtesy we handle those two. And. We say appliances you mean like toasters and things like that so alerts are not a refrigerator. We do you know refrigerators for some of our business plans it's not something that we processor at these so I do intend to direct people to it downstream handles it. Appropriately but certainly if I am. Astor place of business and you ever figure I'll be happy to handle it Korea and do my best are really had to take care everything's so when my team rolls and you know I want them to clear everything counts that you're left with. A clean slate you know when you can set ear office or your server room packed up you know crash. So when somebody brings something to use to drop it off that's free they drop off for free that's taking care of. Yes absolutely Monday through Saturday we are free public chop off but are not test facility. Our team creeks you at the ramp and unloads everything for you were having an out. Everything's free of charge twenty stepson the light bulbs batteries and media. That I mentioned to. And you know eyes and I think I mentioned if you have hurt has told you can actually witness just to strand them right there at no costs which is really good piece of. Mine gasses blamed these for sure because it could be some information on there you don't want health or you just don't know who got her eight years it's almost that sold LO what's the Serb. Well something that's coming up the beginning of October October 6 here at Entercom radio. All of our seasons are getting together with greens century electronics recycling for a gigantic electronics recycling day. Skin be really fun I mean. How did you hear our parking lot very excited about it Shia here is enough let's heartland so we're we're inviting listeners he anybody listening right now can come and bring it but. A carload of stuff. Humor is much material as you can have managed. Guess if you have any old computer monitor is there anything like that didn't sitting in the garage it's time to clean it doubtful the car. From breed under the radio station were located at 0700 selfless Bancroft street. In the in your self waterfront import the event's going to be happening from nine until one. And if you want information on on what you can bring go to the station's website that's a good place had to get information to give them a whole list of what you can bring. Maybe a list of what you shouldn't bring. And also love directions or anything like that to scope of the stations bounce. He has done this type event for the event before. We do these events year round it's it's a lot of fun new breed of. Posts sound empty uniquely announced. Fundraisers for schools and churches. A lot of and highrise buildings sounds sound property managers bowl offer that to their tenants which is really nice sound. Just given his service for them. But yeah it's it's great tune we'll have all the junk tour is full of cords and wires and T had time to really purge and who doesn't have that junk drawer where that. That corner in the garage as the slick Keating's stack higher pattern play out confront. Time to clean it out bring it to Entercom radio. Saturday October 6 from 9 until 1 o'clock. So Heather how does this all work and in where do all these materials go there so many so many components to electronics it gets old broken down a little work. There really are. You know it depends immaterial type of course. Presidential material we are part of a program called organ. By the manufacturers. And overseeing two via DQ. So when presidents chop off their TV scenes those literally gets power ties and sent directly to a processor. And tracks for that program. So not a lot of reais that older equipment. But businesses. Those that those materials after that do searches performed obviously. Our broken down choose their basic components so. You know we're we're basically handling the matter recovery for the words. All of the different various types of metals and food to things. Components. Plastic saudis they get dale olds. Downstream and cents for recovery and new plastics and turned into union commodity. I'm at our facility were basically handling just the dismantling and sorting out bomb material. As they meant send the vetting of our downstream vendors is very is very vigorous. So all of the I'm processor that we send material to our certified. And our hands playing. All types of materials from the most efficient way. Is the seed Oregon more vigorously in any other state or duke or they're more requirements and in the state. You know I think we pride ourselves on being part of the ground work for recycling programs nationwide. I would say that yes. Port planner or again and California of course. Are you know that are there. In the forefront of that industry and so a lot of material does pass through here so that it is handled environmentally. So one thing the greens entry does is it you don't only just to break everything down into its smallest components you. Kinda refurbish it and make it usable again right. I was there and then you can donate you can donate a lot of of this computer equipment back out. We do have a number of really great programs were able to give the facts of the TD that we were quest. A huge number of schools yesterday sent tech. Technology programs in the schools teaching children how to. And disassembled and rebuild computers for their futures. We are Fergus materiel. Cell phone program we donate to renting a house on occasion and we've donated a number of laptops. Destination imagination and and then there's some schools nationwide that we've done as well as internationally which is pretty cool. Well that's Corey anybody in the phone thing that he gets probably people are just I'm tired of this even if it's a flip phone I'm just tired of this phone and I think it can get that recycled. But you can reuse it in donated tomb to various charities. And a branding angle house program I am I really need to reach out to them this week it was really great because there. They're a great organization and hope peeing on survivors of domestic violence and ironing in our area. And our city. And it was really cool to know that I'm some of these funds that are still viable you know people are upgrading. And so women leaders are able to. Get their hands on technology that is her hands and viable for their use in data today and you know helps keep them secure insane. That's really important let's say that's a great thing to do when Menino you think oh I'm tired of my iPhone 5. Cover somebody can really is that yes absolutely so what makes you continue to do the work you do and how did you get involved with electronics recycling. Well as a pro am resident in Europe sixteen years. You know it it's been ten discouraging. Many are curbside recycling the current climates is this kind of melancholy. So it's it's nice to know that we had some control over certain ways streams. And you know knowing that has as it as a you know homeowner. Are resident's that you can. You can literally take something to our response organization. And and knowing that Archie certifications there and they usually limited to bring in Ireland that what's gonna happen to and it's all gonna handle it handled responsibly. You can nor were pretty small industry so we're one of them it's just a few key players and our city. So it. You know that had no fist secular type a stream. You know one of my favorites as far west the American quantum. My goatee is for plastics and was as well as other committees. And knowing that that seem bringing Israel to those organizations. And there are actually recycling and whereas Tillerson skepticism right now with. The Hubble. Inability to acts for large fines of material to chime two to the national sort act. But knowing that you're walking years. Material on green centuries and recycled or your walking your sire phone found actual accident scanning you know energy recovery is happening there. Is really peace of mind. I that you also. Don't remind listeners again to about our electronics recycling day we have coming appear at Entercom radio. All of these radio stations that are in this building which include. Maybe 71 Charlie FM moral fiber on the does. Maybe nine viable navy Q3 kgo in 947 FM in 1080 the fan we're all getting together with green. Sentry to electronics recycling for big electronics recycling day. Is coming up on October 6 from nine until one. In his right here at the radio stations we are at 0700 southwest Bancroft street. Who insult waterfront in Portland and we've got late the perfect driveway right. Is going to be and really it is straightforward turnaround situation. Dry answer so fossil come down towards the waterfront beacon poll and our team won't reach you that at the end at the entry. Well unload all of her goodies for you and you know literally drive on through. A gunman killed stay in the car which is a highly recommend we do recommend. I really don't let's go wandering around. They're gonna take care of everything for you and and people can bring you a cart load of stuff the truckload of stuff certainly we can handle any volume of material. If you'd like to cause before hand because you have a enormous amount of material we know he's meet whose newsletter docked to. Where you can we just like green century online dot net or feel free to get us a call 5037649963. I'm Tony questions or concerns about the volleying are the types of material that your bringing. But Jeff we welcome all credit also some material on Saturday October 6 921. You have be greeted with a smile on everything will be handled quickly and efficiently. And latest news we got the perfect drive where you do stride then it's kind of a loop he does drive in the drop stuff off primary back out. We'll have to go car if there's going to be here the people here to help helping to take care of everything for you. Let's talk about some things that people can bring book what can no what can people bring to our recycling event on October 6. Well certainly you're computers in your lap tops your cellphones. Any kind of electronics that you ninth time in your household or office on viewer. Your speakers in your stereo is. You're printers. I'm we're not except team ink and toner at the events nor are we accepting light bulbs batteries for media. So that media refers to any kind of floppies beneath him discs CDs dvds. The tests are cassettes are you can recycle those serve us we're just they have a fear associated so we're not handling them chairing the event itself. But certainly not any kind of metal or her electronic components like I said anything of the corridor would contain a battery we can pretty much recycling for you. That's so heavily glimpse. Sir yeah floor lamp definitely object ball offers a. So just about what about an air conditioner deputy C and it's. While you understand everything you're pressing and I mean people continental hub and a curling iron. On how to dishwasher via we can pretty much handle at all. Ya was the weirdest thing you've seen come through that it that there isn't played a traditional electronics again but I think your curling iron from that would surprise me. We Edison media server acting came through that was somehow water cooled a word had cool Internet today with it was pretty impressive. And a radiator with cooling system is run through it whereas just Iraq essentially that held servers that. Have you seen any antiques come through like somebody has an old antique radio or something like certainly. Well there really any old audio clip meant. That's. Yeah and in eight tracks obviously and cool stuff from from our youth that's. OK I see all the stuff I do it to you need to sort of museum. We send them off for. The there isn't deathly some interesting components and now we do had been set aside you know we're related eventually when they have something units and be able to folks. Company had its pretty going to say you know. Clean hire guys you wouldn't believe it to try and what about like car parts of of that certainly true like say you've looked like your old car stereo something like I mean Newser early nighter engine leader tires but. The electronics in your car can be to those who know absolutely so a lot of car stereos. You know an Assange like anything medals in if you have carper it's simply accept those two mile loop chief fiscal Q do everything. He track down and this the Saturday event on October 6 92 wants to be a one stop shop load up the car clean up the draws clean up those drawers. Bring in all 20700 selfless Bancroft street in Portland Saturday October 6 from nine until one. It's going to be great. Entercom radio's tuneup of green century electronics recycling whether this has been fun it's been my pleasure to trap Amy can't wait for every day. I can't think of him on the show thank you.
