This is microscope and Entercom radio Portland public affairs program. I'm Gary blocks and it's a pretty staggering statistic that only four out of ten working age adults who have disabilities are employees of the good news there is some help out there we're gonna talk about it today. I'm welcoming Melissa Miller employment solutions director and Nicole Vincent. Employment specialists both with the UC Pete walked into the Schilling's. And Giguere yes thank you very much Gary so I think we probably should get started today by explaining to our listeners what is UCP must all ask you what it is you CPR. You CP or again formally known as united cerebral palsy. Serves adults and children with any type a disability to live work and correct create in their community. While so that's do you guys do some amazing work you've been around for a long time yeah we have we're in our sixtieth year. And you just say you want Roland run yes we did it was a very successful those just couple weeks ago right yeah a lot of fun now yeah did you bull participate in the walk Roland on this or. I guess I did Gary and let me tell you it was quite a challenge I and they're planning for the entire event that is a lot of fun we had to. A lot of folks out there just supporting the cause and just interacting with each other sharing each other on great event that we had. And the weather was pretty good that we cannot tell it was perfect awesome awesome. So you both work in the employment solutions department of UCP tell me what that is. Yeah I implement solutions is a department at UCP or again that helps adults with any type the disability to sit here. And maintaining employment in community based jobs that pay minimum wager better. What kind of jobs are those. Oh we support it's done its job seekers to acquire what ever job. They want and are skilled for so our jobs range from any type of setting that you can imagine. From a bank to a grocery store. And we've supported individuals to work for nonprofits. And for profits of any kind size. Small medium or large. That's some pretty great thing because important employment provide so much to an individual right. What does that mean to the individual. I think that's really great about. Gary is employment ever seen as a gateway to full citizenship and that's kind of the motto that. I think that you CP org and really really hope stared at its heart. And I think that just hiring people who have proven adaptability and who. Can merely creative and Brady Berkeley situations is really really fun to be a part of you hear from the employers as well as the proud employees this is just really. And beyond employment it's just basically got first step to being a citizen and being part of this community that we all live in market. We'll have jobs right. And we are still pretty proud about the fact we have jobs yes and a person with a disability wouldn't feel any different right exactly absolutely. What's what kind of employee. Tell me about the employers. I guess what what are they looking for. Well employers are looking for who job seekers who want to commit to the company who want to be with the company for the long term. A lot of that businesses want employees who become part of the family. And and they expect employees to show up for work to show up on time and to be prepared for work. So and has a supported employment provider of these services. Employment solutions assists both the job seeker. As well as the employer. So we are there to provide supports. We call ourselves and extract. Trainer for supports. So we're not there to replace the worker. But to actually help the worker training their new position and to help the employer to support that person however it is that beanie. I am and tango that gets a little bit here and employers might be a little hesitant to hire somebody with disabilities that correct and why of why he's. Shouldn't they be. You're right. Historically. People win if significant barriers to employment. Have really not had a chance to prove their skills and abilities. I am. So that's what we aim to change. And the truth of the matter is the unemployment rate for people with developmental disability in particular is 80%. A that's a staggering number eight out of ten individuals. In the disability community are unemployed or underemployed. So we're working to change those statistics here and natural a natural area. And and we also have job development happening in hood river Washington can any clock miss Carol and Multnomah County. What are some of the benefits. To society as a whole for having people with disabilities employed its it that there are some benefits that we don't think about. Right yes. That's something I'd like to cover a little then I moved to receive Portland area. Back in the beginning in January and one thing I've noticed with support employment in particular. Is that are really gives these employers the ability to help build their company's brands in the community itself. And also when your hiring and diverse workforce the people in the community see that diverse workforce. They see themselves as part about employer and so they wanna go back they wanna frequent those businesses. So I think really it's just a way of connecting people and building relationships. And the assistant. Something that we wanna do. As a charity work is something that we all do because we think the people we work with. Are successful and have a lot together we work with individuals who are incredibly motivated. And it's such an honor to work with someone who wants to work and I think that with employment we have a lot of African. What are some of the benefits to the job seeker once they get placed into a job. What kind of changes have you seen enough and that individual. Well that's a great question. So each job seeker is going to be unique of course and their career goals are also unique some of the people we are supporting are just getting their first job. Others are looking for their long term careers. And the benefits as you can imagine are very similar to how you and I benefits. Employment allows. Adults to have more buying power. There's a statistic that states that the disability community of people with disabilities. Across the United States and their family and friends make up a one trillion dollar. Buying power. So when people with disabilities are making money from jobs they're also paying taxes. And so there and contributing members to the citing a variety of ways. And honoring. An example of that is a woman named Kristen Miller. Who. For most of her adult life was working in a sheltered environment she was making less than minimum wage. And had no career opportunities. With this company. She hired implement solutions to help forget it John. And she said she wanted to get out of the house for 25 hours a week. And that's how much work she wanted. And and we have dedicated ourselves for the last two and a half for three years helping Crist and obtain. The jobs that she is needed to get herself out of out of the house for 25 hours a week we still have not met her gone we will never stopped trying. But she does have three different jobs. And they are at them on the dome arts center imam moment village. Rain or shine copy shop. And Schwab which is a clothing exchange star on which stack and I'm Chris stemmed. Flourishes. Now in her social life she flirtations with having to try aid. That she contributes to society that she has a job to go to and I went to the rain or shine copy shop and I bought a coffee and I say hey I'm here supporting your coffee shop because you've hired Crist and and that owner kind of its embarrassed me a bit because she said it's not anything special that we did it's the thing that we're supposed to do. It's a thing that should be typical for every business. So as a little bit embarrassed that I was playing enough to be an extraordinary thing and they owner was like no it's just the thing that we do and she's a part of this crew here. It wasn't at a cool feeling though he can build that support from of a business who's to saying hey we're all citizens here Rupert. We should be doing the right thing. Yes absolutely and plan part of that community building aspect I am to get our realignment deeper sense of purpose and really again connecting people and. I've driven by readers and coffee a few times and Alan Cohen and that's that's great now that I know that I wanna go out please do around southeast sixty S and division Gary there on the corner yes and that's that. That's spreads and we need to spread that to me that's really fantastic ranks predatory listeners were listening right now with. We're talking today when Melissa Miller and the colemans and with employment solutions with UC Pete don't you provide some services. Employment solutions provide some services to both employers and to job seekers to me about those. Yes so on the job seeker hires us to help them. They typically come through. A service called vocational rehabilitation. Evoke rehab as a partner that we have. And spoke rehab uses taxpayer dollars here in Horry again to help fund these services. So no money comes out of the job seekers pocket. And we spend significant amount of time with the job seeker. Supporting them to identify their skills and abilities we work on interview prep. We've that the different jobs that they want to make sure they have that Indy have the skills and qualifications for the job that they want to. So we get to know their skills and early eighties and then we begin to support them in applying for jobs. We work when employers and business owners to identify and they're hiring needs. Many businesses have a job openings we will apply for them directly just like any job seeker would. Other businesses may have hiring needs that they're not sure that they know about yet and we get to that by giving needs analysis when an employer. And on our job is to connect an employer with a pairing need to a job seeker who has skills and abilities to contribute. So we put those two together and we get out of the way and we sup port. In the job seeker to die and start performing the work at the place of business with the service recalled job coaching. That's early actually need Melissa to see that practice because when your looking. Businesses. Who have these means that they don't necessarily realize. When they how that employee come in and start to fill lean those tasks in meaning those on that. Hasn't really aren't. Then no one really has time for essentially it's really cool to see because of businesses are actually save lean on their labor costs are increasing their revenue. And in turn they're helping someone become successfully employ getting getting that first foot in the door to citizenship so it's just really great to see. Actually worked as a job coach for about eight months I'm currently in employment specialist. About the chop coach I got to seat. These employees who were just really proud to be a part of the workforce and he'd always find that motivation and so I think it's really really important. That we honored people who want to be out there working and that's why the CP organ does such great work because we can get people. Through those stores up might not otherwise be opened for them. But it's like once every one sees what this vision of support employment looks like it's about success and building a successful life and a full citizenship. Suddenly. Everything else becomes clear in the workforce I've seen training programs Sowers started for just. One employees that we supported. Asking players and this is a really great training Paramount actually any assists for every one. I'm in fact I remember treating a picture diagram for. Customer and it's different individual I have worked with. And so I brought that back to his entire team and they're actually thinking about implementing not for the rest of their backers. I knock music business named because we're still in negotiations as far as what that might look like. But I think it's really cool that we can provide some unique training aspects that they can bring to everyone on the employment team not just customers we support. And so it can actually really help make a more efficient workforce as well. And you know over a bit of a celebration coming up that celebrates. Employers how their right to me about the in the awards onto him coming. Yes the ability aware awards luncheon is coming up in a couple weeks it's Friday October 19. And it is going to be a plated luncheon and awards ceremony. So what we've done is we've sat down together as a team and really examined. The last probably 200 placements that we had I PCP and implement solutions. And we are going to give a low grades to some of the top stand out in employers. Who hire people with disabilities. Son. Are we think so far have nominees for companies such as Nike. Can't compete Fred Meyer rain or shine copy shop only chest CU and Nike to name a few. What are some of the qualifications for for being oh awarded. Well we have six different alerts we have an award for longevity for example so that would be an individual that disability who's worked at their place of business for ten years or more. We have an extra mile award. Where the business interests receiving an extra mile award has gone above and beyond the typical college elite when it comes to honoring. Their employees. One of the businesses for example who has been nominated for extra my own. I'm. Engaged. And partnered with evoke rehab. And a company called assistant technology is. To get a computer system so that their new employee he could make membership calls using a computerized dialer. Which assisted them to be a 100% independent in their job and instead of relying on the job coach or human being to make those calls for him. It's cool stuff hypocrite when is a once again yeah I it's Friday October 19 that checking and starts at 1130. We are really encouraging community members and business owner as people with disabilities anyone who's interested in. Supported employment or employment in China realm. To please check out our web site he's CP or again dot or it again that's you CP Horry again dot org to register for the luncheon. And while you're there check out our family support conference which is also happening the weekend of Friday the nineteenth and Saturday the twentieth. And I like to add as well I know it's not always easy to get on the Internet if anyone has additional questions or like to register and doesn't have access to the Internet we do encourage you to call. Or phone numbers 5037774166. And if you don't have access to the Internet you can just give us a call or sunny additional questions that's 5037774166. It should be really fun of and we actually had a super difficult time in trying to identify. Which employers would win this year that's what we want we want every year it be just a little bit harder to narrow it down who's the winner and our future goal is to have this award program not even exist because we live in a world verse part employment is just a thing that every employer offers. Yeah that's a super positive thing but it went in thanks piece of encouragement yes. But let me ask you what you say to a business to encourage them to have to hire somebody with a disability. Why I would definitely. First of all wanna know what their needs are as a business on the foray approach any other aspect that I would want to offer them. My turn would try to analyze what's working for their business what's not. An and I would really take a look at that take that information back to my team back to the motivated job seekers. And try to determine if we have a good fit because really it's a system of matchmaking and isn't necessarily about selling one employer. 21 job seekers about making sure we also have a good fit. And so if I do fine I have a good fit I'm gonna come back to an employer and say hey look you know I've been analyzing your business we've been building us relationships for awhile now. And here's where I think he can really help you out. I'm so again I try to not think of this in any way is trying to sell something because if we look at it in not respect and we're not really honoring what this sport employment is supposed to be about which is again making people successful so. I would really wanna make sure the conversation I'm happy with the business would be that there where were. There to help meet their needs as well as provide a super reliable creative and independent complaint. Yeah employment solutions and they get really a real necessity for a bit. For them for the business have brought peace of mind with moving forward on hiring somebody with a disability. The right yeah thank you come. I really encourage it does or says if they have any questions or concerns to contact us. You can find my contact information again on our website at UC people worried intact or it. We have worked and partnered with hundreds of business in businesses in the parliament Cho region and I'm. Many of the businesses that we partner with would love to talk to other businesses. HR directors executives and owners about their experience working with us and supported employment so we would love to connect. Businesses to you know and like that that's absolutely how many are willing to we have many testimonials. And many businesses who want to talk to our businesses hiring people with disabilities. What a great service that is. Defense there's nothing better than getting a testimonial from somebody has been turned on the right. Yeah and we want this to be an open conversation about what it looks like so bad you businesses are encouraged to speak to each other that I think that's fantastic and ends and. Could you talk about some misconceptions about hiring a personal disabilities. Yes I say that. We here are some concerns about pairing people with disabilities. That. Turn out to just be statistically. We're not accurate. I'm a long term DuPont surveying. Of employees with disabilities found. That most employees with disabilities iron quite loyal they want to stay with companies for long the long term. Most workers with disabilities were found to be quite safe on the job site so very few accidents on the job site. Quite in line with the typical. Employee. I'm employees with disabilities tend to be dependable. And they tend to value their job and and be loyal to the company that hires them so we find that many of the concerns that our product can really be overcome. And and in that twelve years that I've been in the field upset supported employment. We've served hundreds of job seekers to secure jobs many of them have worked at their places of employment for five to ten years now. And arm I'm just excited to talk to any business who has any concerns and wants to discuss them with fast. The other way or hearing your yeah we're here to help absolutely. What how how things changed over the last twelve Beers and you've been with PCBs and in placing them employers and employees rather. Well. There have been changes they're spend changes in the legislature. And a lot. Which has really helped to advance supported employment for people with disabilities. That changes in July have certainly helped to open the doors to more people with disabilities and breaking into the workforce. They're at and some lives around. Supplemental income which will enable people to earn more money and maintain their medical benefits for example. On the fairways and which the government. Is working to try to get more people with disabilities into the workforce and try to remove some of those previous barriers that were there. So on route and the Portland match oh region in general has become a how are we more open mind dead and more more accepting. In general but as we say it's one person at a time he and every job seeker who hires us to help them has unique career goals and aspirations and so. We just work to work with each person and I'm. Tried and meet their career needs such as sweet as to where quick. And the unemployment rate in this. Pretty much the United States is pretty low right now hasn't had any effect on what you do is do. I don't believe that. So I've not really seen that trickle down. And personally don't have the statistics in front of me but I think the last. I heard a month or so ago is hours still hovering around the same. Unemployment rate for folks experiencing disabilities. And I think it's just part of our mission again just sort of equalize the playing field in the prospectus well. Samir we should say the people listening out there you have help wanted sign your window call you see because they can help you out. Yes I resolutely well let me share this thank Canada it isn't your business needs. Yeah we have prop approximately sixty. Job seekers right now that we vetted were aware their skills and abilities we have the resources to support. There employment experience we have job coaches available to support them on the job site. And arm. These individuals are ready to work and every day we get referred more individuals were ready to work so I mean. Yet you have a job that we need or you want to explore your job needs please do give us a call we're excited to work with Gil and to me once again when the lynch and his that's coming up recently yes Friday October 19 at second starts at 1130. Doors open at twelve. And we highly encourage you to. Check out our use CT or again dot org website or call our phone number and I was three. 777. 4166. Like to add if I could I just have really cool feature gonna have this year. Is we have Aaron Hobson he's going to be are featured vocalist. Aron is someone who isn't part of employment as a successful and proud employee has worked. After safely ASEAN people fired for almost ten years looks nicely put. Well great that he's a small world seal prior recognize Aron had that I will I he really has a lot of joy when he is working his job so who becoming an engineer really need aka palace I guess we record books to register and sign up and also get some great stories and some great seafood gala cap you at that. This is a place where somebody who is a business owner can come and get more information about how maybe how they compare to speak to. Yes absolutely. Our featured speaker this year we're very glad to have for is recounts salon then. She is said diversity and talent. Acquisition manager at OH a CEO. And she has led a group. Of community partner is for the last two years. To sit at a table and figure out how OH IC you can increase. Hi hearing people with disabilities and she's on her second year of running this program and they hired natural people with disabilities. And they're hiring many more accurate though her written message is if OH IC you can do this every business can do that so we're really excited to hear what she has to say. That's a luncheon. That's great and going to choose those colorful largest employer in the steel boring and I think yes they're big look so great to their reach out and doing the right thing.
