You're listening to -- go through a series of interviews with people of interest in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington I'm your host Ted Douglas at this point we've all heard about the overwhelming disaster in Haiti we've heard about the earthquake itself. We've heard the job dropping numbers on casualties the newly homeless and the dollars lost we've heard about the multitude of ways you can donate to the cause but one thing we haven't heard a lot of our first hand accounts of the day of devastation. Well today I have with me someone who was there on a mission of charity with the lifeline Christian mission when the earth moved it Cheri we've been talking already I'm the first segment. About the experience of being in the earthquake itself and we were just starting to get into. Know what you were all doing to help out. Afterwards and you mentioned we know we shoes in a helping people pray and things like that but when you're looking at these. Massive devastation in front him what's the process of prioritizing. How do you determine what's next. No fly another day and I know Lila life Feinstein right now is that they have brought community. Leaders from Graham log into there are community into their compound and they got a plan you know the first step is to go out much to read the debris left to assess the building -- and see what. Need to be just -- taken down -- what can we salvage them and that's really the first neat this is the only get their homes up and running. But beyond anybody's more than others tons of medical needs seem right I mean that. Now and a life plan has several doctors have come in now and other places organizations have sent doctors enemy in. Injuries car is summit that happened here in America wouldn't be nearly as life threatening you know something very simple broken. Blade becomes very life for any mechanics at that infection. And stuff so. In you know as far as going forward from here the first anything happen -- have their their home's assessed and figure out how they can go far in that area. That they have the medical needs and then the food needs as well they're -- there needing help with the food and I'm on a lifeline -- -- process as well. And Lou we spoke a little bit before the show about you know looking at all the charities that are out there there is certainly in question when dealing with a place like Haiti. Where the money is going. And that it's important to find it charitable organization that kind of works independently of the Haitian government right because a lot of times those the funds are. Misappropriated lifeline for your mission certainly do is one of those organizations. Red Cross but you wanna be sure when donating they years do a little bit or research for guests and make sure that somebody that is working independently and going in there has had their own army of people Tulsa clam which was certainly -- -- case with -- What were some of the highlights were some positive song and when I say that and I mean if you're out of helping of -- your experiences there. And guess the -- that I McCain that I got to witness to they would have gotten to witness without the earthquake. Is that hard at the Haitian people can -- you know I got to -- resiliency that I'm not pilot of recognize are very resourceful. And there the men our our translators and guards at their heart was stress you know we we have taken on some criticism that we came home. And we income -- earlier than we earnestly planning on any way that people thought it was not too wise and possibly the country when -- in that -- it. The Haitian people they they knew we had homes and families to go back to him. Even though their need was great they had their heart was stressed building a backed terror our homes entire family isn't. Am latest phenom for referred -- end and these men didn't even know any of us that they immediately took on the responsibility of making sure that we are always protected them and no harm attempt to us. And so that was the highlight just -- this year nation people on a way wouldn't have been. And really didn't see the hand of god imminent when you do we really works -- has got it really protected. Am when you look at the devastation all around you see that you got to really protect and SM and kept us from any harm. The analysis amazing Atlantic Council Islamic Triplett said. That she really wanted to come away with a deeper understanding of who god is -- And she beat me obviously does you know and a brand new design yeah I know she even said to me you know I I had doubts about God's existence you know what you're really there. And yet she says I have none of those doubts now can she could seek. You know maliciously on America goals of the -- the earthquake a little four year old girl actually died because of her injuries and I am. But then hours later babies being born in the middle of the field you know I read them there are other birth to -- -- experts beyond that in on just. Them just seen that you know god that gives -- that takes away an -- and and he just took care and all of our needs every one of them. Well and if people that criticize folks -- that left from there who were there before. I think the credit to begin an outweighs that criticism because you were there. I mean certainly didn't foresee her earthquake everybody you were there you guys were on the front lines of helping out -- I am -- first people there can be immediately helping him you were there are. What happened and certainly another -- armies and armies of people flooding into Haiti to help out now and lots of money coming -- they're certainly not enough -- but. It wasn't like you left them -- without your without any help at all right that's why you were there for almost a full week. Yeah we're there we we came on the seventh of January and we early scheduled to leave on the sixteenth of January so it. And the other -- and we all excesses you know we weren't equipped to do I need to be done. You know and I am and we are taking up valuable space include you know there are generators run by. Graham I get -- -- they can conserve on the you we're taking up stuff and and supplies and resources that they could use for my other people elected do more. Well plus you were not prepared now to deal with the nurse -- he can have the resource right there I mean you're there to be. Humanitarian help right certainly playing but he. It is so you were there with back -- to dig below often the rubble in my you know -- you were there to do we could. Make some room for the people who are coming in with -- sound like help out now for for that specific -- -- speaking of getting out of there there were a lot of people suddenly. Wanting to get out of eighty I imagine that was -- confirmed a bit of an America how how old were submitted this to -- things are getting out of there. EM BR the lifeline wasn't working very diligently at home as well as in Haiti trying to get so some way home and they'd run the gamut of a private chat since 20 private jets she had been. A airlifted to having them mean they look at the possibility actually having a ship coming into -- while there's no port there that there's a little bit of an access point them. If -- were all over the boards and they had told us. Thursday night that that we would be leaving Friday morning be ready. And then that fell through and the and we shot the one gal that assist the seriously and -- that need to get out there and none of us you -- and we did not wanna leave before she did. They want to get her. Out and so the decision was made that bad they're gonna put her in this track and drive -- -- -- and try to get a flight out ten. And that was just like minutes from happening when it's up -- -- out when I ended after all and so they end up scheduling an -- for her that -- and then I was never so glad to see an American flag on the arm of one of our soldiers he does. Amen and got this woman and I am I don't think she even know what's happening with like boom boom boom she's up on a helicopter and taken to a ship her ram to be assessed and to be helped and -- was -- Debian Friday after -- Kind of late -- dusk and then them than it was decided the State Department said -- best I was just ahead to the airport in they would do their best to get us out sell. That's really get the first few days so we couldn't -- winning -- I was open deport immigrants and then the other thing is that flights weren't coming in are -- out -- I heard found out later once we got their press talk a demand from the State Department. And the -- -- -- just not even being managed it was just helter skelter and watch that I am. Our military came man and they didn't have to actually they had to enlist the authorities in Haiti to get under control but there was a very very strong American presence when we arrived there. And then we just -- -- this you know we checked and -- our passports at all that and then we are just to stand. And way to make in the building was not safety could just tell it you know -- was cracks and everything am who almost fallen down. So we had this to stand on the tarmac but no -- end and them wait and they spread out you're gonna -- and out up and I am -- going now I you know I just -- up but now we -- we started -- only saw cargo -- -- -- some little piano with I am right in now what about two weeks have gone home and while it was a cargo plane as C seventeen air force cargo jet -- Him he only just it was just kind of way how are you not immune elites. And in Magellan data mean didn't. Is -- like in the movies is just the seats along the -- Add these plug on this idea at all I have there's no beverage service see that I was very close your health yeah no movies we asked all those questions -- AM. And yet they just had a shed on the bottom on the floor itself and they took one of those cargo belts right in -- distracted across our laps and then why in the ratcheted and they said. And is sinking in with this really do anything Amy it's a right to happen and then when they took off as I said okay -- -- -- -- pulled on your belts and so we did. Yeah I think it's less about safety more not just keeping you from tumbling down that play out and you don't really didn't just get us out of there -- -- -- the -- wasn't a whole lot of options there -- an American Airlines is who we're supposed to fly out on -- they had packet can't solve all I assure them turn -- so. There were just there weren't a lot of options and they were able to -- 200 of us on that plane -- which was also and in did you fly -- to -- nearby airport of -- -- while we'd like was that -- -- from Tamiflu to homestead air force base in Florida and -- phenomenon -- -- delicately rolled out the red carpet for a -- only. Word you know ready for a 100% I can they're so organized obviously they know how to do that something that Red Cross is there and madam me and they just a process sister immigration and customs and goddess so the Miami airport part especially kids so that some of us had flights glioma women stars almost gonna -- -- -- -- step so. The light plane Christian mission has been there -- -- easy for thirty years and Haiti has not had an earthquake in what he's into an entity that so now. I -- do they reassess. What their mission is. Yeah I think they are mean and that process right now they've always had worked teams come down to build a house for this person asked about person. Hang -- now it's gonna be a whole different focus you know let's get this let's get this village back up and run Maine and much to Karen that people they -- very organized because a -- respected. Because city officials are willing to work with them and so they have. And I forget how many cams they had in that area that they have a very organized that BM -- -- -- that camp may have a system the passage outside that it's orally. And -- dots -- that was their first goal is still a disk everybody fat and now another second goal is to go through and assess what need to be done gone clean up what you can clean up that told the Haitians and then and America all common -- the -- -- and decide what to do from there -- south. You know beef and on the other they're -- every I think everyone of their twelve schools has significant damage done to itself. You look at that rebuilding project needs to happen them another compound itself there are ready turned to rebuild the security walls and yeah and then that's why I and I wanna just to state that the Haitians were never riotous our area they are -- -- -- slot. And the when you have not seen you know EU will go and take whatever you can take you know so the security laws are more -- just keep the stuff. From going into people's hands that do it and they improper way -- lifeline has a process for everything and they need help they're gonna get the help they just need to wait for. While we just joining us you listening to match your scope a series of interviews with people of interest northwest Oregon and southwest Washington I'm your host have Douglas. -- speaking today with -- Swanson who was in Haiti when the earthquake hit as part of the life playing Christian mission and we're discussing the ins and outs of that day and -- how they got out of there. Ended the mission itself. So the -- Does a lifetime. Actress mission to date now also do it they were doing before with these new duties laid on top of it or has it completely shifted over to -- and helping the immediate. Yeah I think I'm I think it's gonna shift a little but I know that you know -- they usually did get distribution four times a year for the right -- that are sponsored. And I am I'm sure that's grip on the back burner in fact they've passed house sponsors at this point not to send -- -- -- and -- money for a year for your family for -- sponsor a child and what makes -- money gets another Hammett. So more practical suffering I usually they -- That's the sponsors will send. Practical stuff as well as CL fun stuff for they and they kids some a lot of sponsors are supergenerous and provide things the entire family you know. Them the right now that's what the biggest need is so I know a life plan is asking people to send money more than then them. Materialistic ushered out so how do people go about helping out yellow and if you want a partner of lifeline that Christian mission just got a lifeline dot org. Oh -- he's in half and mound there's -- -- there website full of information. And you can donate online this is a -- -- can do there them. I think. I mean my -- with lifeline just because of the history you have with Haiti can write you know them well let me say it's C wanna make sure they you're donating to a -- bread is establish exactly and -- and -- -- trust -- -- -- trusted him from Americans -- are tested by the -- govern any immense south. The other Haitian government knows that that life -- does get. And they're willing to -- recognize that not that they help much but they recognize it and rest. That said if you have a favorite organization you -- and and and it's helping on Haiti please -- is generously as generously as you can I know. We're having a rough financial time here in the states is this but what we're experiencing is nothing. Nothing -- I think yes you know I want and it said the foreign nine and on the show that you know we can -- You know and that's you know I know that sometimes -- feel like I really do anything when you do that let you know we we found. My -- my husband my -- our team that I definitely -- and the very latest will be going next January when they do another lady stay. Mark there wouldn't would you go specifically back to Haiti or would you possibly get 2% to one of the other countries that no I would she is usually they get one Honduras as well as Haiti and I which -- -- 81 -- I fell in love with those people to your honor I mean the kids are just beautiful and love seeing them they're just the -- sat in church for three hours with children all -- they just. Claim on yen and you know just sloppy they just what they truly love be right now and like you say when you see of people faced with. That kind of challenge to have sent in -- brings everybody together used really truly see the heart of other people -- daily and enjoy they have such joy minivan. The night after the earthquake once say kind of calmed down her allies to world was -- ending and they are singing praises and -- -- home and joyful and have got pictures of children before and after NEC the same joy in their faces. Now. Yes won't be you know when facing that devastation you've got to try to get either put on a good -- her or give into it right and certainly have somebody there to help you along it in keeping. The good face on narrative to keep your your spirits up is is of utmost importance -- turn off. Thank you for being there and helping them and helping them do -- -- was my pleasure. If everybody did that the amount -- help would be astronomical. An American -- isn't very strong and Haiti.
