You know listening to -- of the series of interviews with people of interest in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. I'm your host Ted Douglass my guest today is simply returning champion to the show. His name is John McCallum who's the president of prime time sports were gonna get into everything. They do to help our schools and then though a lot of the programs therein as well as we're gonna talk about a big big event they have coming up -- less Schwab bowl presented by express employment professionals. Won't get into what all that is and how you cannot attend have a great time and help out schools yourself -- John. Great Ted thank you bring you having me on microscope and -- com radio for doing this. -- -- Absolutely it's our pleasure. And let's start off by and let our listeners know a little bit about yourself and how you came to be with primetime sports. I don't care. Actually yeah. Started prevent -- forced back in 2005. With another employee came from previous company. And that put on that these these events and an ideal circumstances around it kind of left -- That company kept -- less Schwab event with. Kept those -- from -- cholesterol bowl or. Intellectual invitational presented by -- put professionals and how well has created great relationship with Nike. And are doing a lot national event with those guys. So we just keep all that and trying to give back a community with each and every that we do including those Mikey wants -- -- -- I gave just got a real high -- whole idea of what you guys do -- of primetime sports let's get a little deeper into aware what is the purpose of your company when he -- -- All of the main parties can really focus on. He'd lead you. Effect so that -- -- sporting event. Mainly. I -- could go more to high caliber type the all star urged the high profile teams have -- profile athletes. So whether it put Paula girl dirty we have coming up the state organ. Or the election -- invitational which are bringing in nationally ranked team historian for. The Nike usually used -- about all the Big Apple event technical account we have an -- be eaten coming up in July. -- all focused on the high level. You lead athletes better -- up in that period reportedly put on. And is it just high school AG get in college. Yet mainly due to high school. Know that you can really see it but this state -- and high school athletes. Dorsey around basketball blue TM going onto the NBA maybe being based on -- some magical -- -- college. Whether that's. -- supported her and -- sure. So the don't. There really make -- a name for ourselves you know starting about -- your soul -- -- outspoken basketball football itself. Fantastic self the less Schwab mole is the the current event for the upcoming event here you have going on we should mention everybody that it is Saturday June 23 at the Hillsborough stadium in Hillsborough. Gates open at three of the kickoff for the games at 6 o'clock. I didn't get tickets at less Schwab dot bull dot com. Just look up -- -- spelled weird you confided on Google sister didn't come close you'll find it. -- and dad of course is presented by express employment professionals who I believe you had on -- the last time you're on the show that's a really great organization. And cool that they got involved in this as well. Yeah he did they are medium businesses are second year according to a let's all -- and he of the they're just a great overall. National. You know franchise system around helping people find jobs that really here. Locally we've got a great presents a lot of great local owners can really get behind. Stuff we do it in. And for the good of the community. Yeah I hear -- their -- -- with a high school and there are also up and how the jobs and couldn't. And they they really are they really do have a lot of jobs available so you check them out. So let's talk about what this game is less Schwab bulls. Sounds and I mean that stadium is awesome kind of -- many -- pro looking stadium. Pretty cool and let's about the game as -- who's in this game. Yet it what it did it's it's the all star football game from the state of organ brother graduated seniors. And you know whether you call that claim her last high school game error or maybe their first college game. You know it really to showcase. Those football players and what they achieve -- -- -- the -- -- in the -- in on -- first 2000. You know competition on the field and really -- -- -- bragging rights and -- part of the state has the best football players. Awesome awesome so it's kind of an extension of the invitational you guys do in the fall. Where it's the it's bringing in the team from all over the country to battle against each other this is all the best players from around the state. Drew Mickelson had -- out of the teams split up. But -- can do is put up by pretty much did geographic location until the north -- Canada the Portland metro area you know all the schools around there to kind of bigger. That I get more popular schools -- says that south as you know from Foley from -- committee heard -- east the panel and Tommy armour and has -- playing minutes over the rest restaurant week help. He can Nehru really -- -- you look at this caliber teams he's the big hospices and all right throw around he built. Receivers to -- gathered at city -- -- coming in and there are an important for authorities. All plays itself but it's really an interesting dynamic on the US team that you'll face off. That's great you know a little fun dynamic dramas big and so you guys have. Have been evolves -- for a long time of the game has been going on this is the 65 year. Wow wow so -- how did this kid had as we don't start -- -- begin. Well it did its thing you know again carried out 55 years ago like you just said you know it is trying games have been different China confident. This game is very popular that pulled out the old multnomah stadium which later turned into -- stadium has more. Older Portland people like you -- probably know holes. You know analysis done all the way too late eighties at. But however in the early to mid nineties the game started going downhill little bit lost money in the players and coaches did want to be involved. Really tried playing the game down in Corvallis new team that never really caught on popularity down there. So the organ athletic coaches association who's been. Involvement selection process as a coach and the players. Really decided they wanted to rekindle event then bring -- back of the Portland. Like metro area this is about nineteen. I remember -- -- You know the coaches are tired doing their due in two weeks of practice. The players in one participate. Around it so they're about 1988 which have been the first year -- that I got Paul. What that the good came back -- you -- stadium in with the latest bloody awful sold. You're kind of returned from there have you you know little -- change literally the same exact event. -- we kept on the practices and you -- a week if they don't from two weeks and then we came out fun to be oriented financial players at night. In the knowledge of the game got a big marketing boost. In the game -- I don't want to less -- right around more promotion and people start to come back and watch the game again. Well let's try was one of those companies that is such a big part of the community -- just it's kind of missed the stamp of approval of the way. Sounds funny to say that about a bit of business you -- their their tire business but they they have that reputation there involved as so many different charities and and really have -- given a lot back to the community. He had no we did you have Microsoft does get him they support this event you know like you said many other -- all communities. You know so we -- campaign -- good thing about them. Right rent so does that then mean that that's probably why you guys did you go after -- -- did they come to you heard that come together. Utility actually recreated their relationship from our -- -- battle tournaments I sit around and so what we're approaching this immediately. We know we knew there for a plot young customer service. We don't be creeping to learn from it is the players and games the early help you. Yeah exactly that's exactly what we wanna -- this game coming back I -- players involved and it don't we needed somebody to. Look up -- you don't pull up remarks brief side but also from the players' side. So we knew that he -- from. Billing them for two years -- it was a great great fit. -- element in the thing what some other great partners like you mentioned current employment professionals Nike. Which provides all you want -- cleats and everything the players and even this year record company sent in decking. Jumped on board because they wanna be affiliated with the creek community event like this one and you know what can hardly -- or. Friend Brad yeah I have certainly if if you're a business in town -- looking for somebody involved with you see less -- already involved chances are that's a pretty good group. -- If you're just joining us you're listening to match scope a series of interviews with people of interest in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. I'm your host -- Douglas my guest today is John McCallum he's the president of primetime sports there an organization. That -- helps out with dead -- fund -- with them. With high school sports teams and the and such they've they like to get together with them. The best of the best -- put on events and lots people come to them they give the money and then not that money goes to very very good causes. We're talking about the less Schwab bowl which of course coming up here Saturday June 23 at Hillsborough stadium I gates open at three kickoff is at sixteen go to less Schwab bold dot com. Do you buy tickets in advance which is highly suggested so let's talk a little bit about where this money is going this time around. Here you don't. The players they're a great job that we do is get a -- -- ticket to game. And add in the game program and these proceeds goes to the notoriety -- differing -- organizations. It over the years the game is supported. -- moment athletic foundation to pay to play program. Why anti tech -- at least. Every year we give them a way to initiate a scholarship fund the other school granite state that are in need. Give money and there's other non profits now that all the -- that you have available give the proceeds deal. They'll depicting it as. The only -- it everyday expenses that we keep the players and -- to -- they claim a game. They're being showcase capital we want them to be involved to give back community as well. Right yeah it's it's a little bit of a harder sell feel like you know what we need you knew personally you're gonna be the one that's gonna go out there and do this. It's like wow that's okay that's a lot of pressure on a -- bring in this match but when you have a whole team of people and then beyond that whole community in these businesses involved. Don't like an army of people doing it. And you could feel a little better about you know what I did my part I got side by my little bit there went into the air became part of this larger hole in the U you can feel ownership of that big amount that was made. Exactly exactly don't let the players obviously there. Very good ought to do on the field you wanna get out there into their own community that would they're known in me going and I -- come support the charities that. The game and -- back to come to pour me -- how much easier sell and everybody feel good about it. Now that's so cool so IA SI hear my notes that there was an article on high school All Star Games a couple years ago that. Put less Schwab bowl presented by express employment professionals. There was ranked in the at the top five for attendance of high school football All Star Games that's pretty incredible specially when you you mentioned earlier that you know in the eighties it wasn't doing so great -- and now that's quite a bounce back. I'm what do you think is so different about this game from other games of -- sort around the country. Yeah I heal it it -- you're staying in blue you saw that note that good by the magazine from your -- you don't look at it sideways as well but. -- a football game RTE he would. Promote market because usually played. Summertime doesn't normal football treatment for. You don't look like we talked about the idea was to get the players the bald -- ticket -- he could not all of the state. So we -- people are coming from like you could ariston penalty and rose -- -- burden no wherever these players are from. The other coming here to watch the game. You know this increase is enough tickets are being told really you had all the protein -- direct our back it and we don't use organizations scholarships. Would that they did you know everything we do we have a lot of other activities to be a big game for people enjoy that's just the main game itself. It also -- -- they have fun and football family that's never very good Georgia ports are outsiders helped to do. Right yeah that's great and speaking of that. Not just the game the door -- the gates open there three the kickoff until six leaves. Good amount of time they're for other things happened what else is gonna happen around the cement. Seattle will be donated brick custom -- index you're putting on a fan fest so everybody come to 3 o'clock you'd go down on the field. Over the game being played and it's going to be -- done -- morning -- kind in the field can be created so. You feel like no players felt good down there will have inflatable executed into the -- -- -- little obstacle courses tools -- a lot of football activities -- And grows and he -- different obstacles to run through to -- to make it a fun time down there. We don't and all concession and you know they're Gardner and it'll be open during that time so Tiffany agree gaelic -- for the last four years will be a fun environment. I couldn't knock on wood meant to actually -- His kid you never know the content that. They'll usually passed you know once we get past July 4 then the weather tends to improve. -- and -- -- German -- accomplishment for the super before that soul. Leo we'll hope we'll hope we'll hope. And I think that but yeah I imagine did you -- kids there who you know are probably just start to -- about football. -- learn about sports and everything that goes into that. They go to his event they get a they get a -- easy do these events before and -- get to see this game played. That has all the excitement around it of a college program. Yeah exactly video that -- -- vessel to be it. Come and help build it off the field to the when the players are gonna become a -- up you know everybody have a chance to be right Carol watching you really. -- bay hill club and -- can hopefully they had those kids. I -- -- BA guy here -- 567 years old -- they are old and you know the ultimate goal point two gamecube. Share yeah how cool -- -- -- sort of mentioned we have we hadn't talked about the -- is is a very affordable event for you and your family reserved tickets in advance which are even beginning and get it less Schwab old dot com reserved adult tickets fifteen bucks reserve student tickets are senior tickets twelve bucks. And then the dating game. Eight bucks there general admission or six bucks for students. So that's that's very very for low and I've excuse me I mentioned under three is free and and students is anywhere from 4018 years old so very affordable day lesson don't know -- so good this. Usually you should -- be there from. Created 10 o'clock to seven hours the. And even those reserve prices they -- fifteen bucks that's that's still less than a three movie and this is treating its own game in 3-D. Actually that's that's exactly. Now the reserve tickets is that better -- you get a closer. Yeah it's between the forty. Cool you don't have them have backup that you got your seat the whole time they get up and go help so there definitely did beat the premier seats and you said that. -- Canadian and click on many -- athletic pro stadium out there are still there and not a bad he. The. Yeah if you ever seen that stadium if you listen to this it's pretty incredible if you drive out highway 26 you can see it from the freeway it looks like a mini stadium it's -- very very cool. Until they wanna replace these kids get to play so I imagine in all the time that this has been going on especially since you've been involved has got to be a lot of memorable games memorable moments just like any kind of pro series. Tell -- if there is. We -- ended which one of the best. This is hard to say that -- fifteen years and -- so many good players come through current a lot of the playing field multiple multiple want to call it was their division one Q3. Junior college you know we had the last three years in a row to get drafted -- up -- draft each while. So a lot of good players have come through a lot of good games. They opt out my head. I would have to say the first football bowl in nicknamed many it was a good one -- -- north to south on the very last play of the game and with a touchdown pass but there's and demagogues do from grand canal place -- Detroit Lions you know if you're a great one very high scoring trick plays a big moment but however you. Polish open according to what intestinal for the northeast of the 320 pound running back this no lull between me and don't. So they hold those who saw last year's game. Was try to create these game that we ten -- fifteen years -- out of them by four touchdowns at halftime the north storm back the second half of I'm winning then the final minute. So exciting -- every -- you talked about these -- the all star players from across the state so does these are all. Great great great kids. We are very great kid noble character and -- wanna come Saturday -- propellant on there ready to go and they put on show up. I don't well I think that's also a big part of it and this is the all star game so they are not just come and play hard but they're coming to put on a show. Their comment to let's let's while orbited imagine especially the kids are coming from out of the area are really want you know show the city -- what. The exactly you know and then the best part about it the coaches also understand that -- -- -- they wanted the fans of the -- loud you know what they're athletic ability not gonna keep. Had he run the ball great time here he can't throw fifty times. If you don't get older athletes involved there's so many good ones so they -- it is great entertaining football. Now it is a question just from myself. Do you deal so much with with high school athletics. I'm wondering if over the years as some of the state funding for high school sports has has been trickling away are you seen me -- are more kids that are really serious about the name get involved because it actually ends up. Costing them something to be a part of it. Very much -- okay well it's a hard one to use because. You know some comedic and they have more of a means to support -- -- to -- home. Don't -- and so you don't put everything we do you like to talk to our -- tournament you -- back in this. Member of the tickets that they get the school called -- keep. No hope until split here when they go and so these tickets this game to do that also helped fund. You know what they do now but also other communities in the future with the giving back and -- that aspect. Writer because I mean I remember him when I was in high school many many years ago. I was you know I've played lot of sports coming up through school I played the soccer basketball baseball. And when estrogen into junior highs are getting into -- high school you know it became a little the -- -- -- -- dig a little more seriously if I wanna continue to do it because you were suddenly have to go to try outs and it wasn't just you don't. I wanna play out a game on the weekend dad and I wasn't Italian -- -- that I hadn't really been taking it seriously enough to. Get into the high school level sports junior high it was involved that. And high schools I can I don't news. But but the one that was available for me to do you know that they kind of let anyone -- to do was track and field. So auto ended data still lives still like to be involved in sports and a pole vaulting into long distance wasn't great -- any of it but I did it and it was still it was fun it was a good time. But now to do that stuff it would cost my family a lot of money to do it. At that time it was all funded by the school. He helped don't know that it's very true but he didn't -- it. The new format technically aspect he told her she used to yell and obviously who were very lucky -- -- have thank you took a lot of support you don't in the bowl backyard -- early. You'll -- stuff for us. For the athletes so they have to go to those expenses that would duplicated. You know and now you're seeing a lot of kids that all. I specialize in that in a sport they know they're playing club sports year round -- the data every sport athlete is certain no waned because of competition so hard. New guitar playing basketball baseball football soccer. Reckon you'll cross country wherever it is you're rail. Help from it and you know it's just outplayed in the school even bothered to do above and beyond what that they know they have multiple kid and family could very very dependent. Yes share -- cam era rather my senior year the guys I don't know if it's still going -- and -- tonight. -- -- -- -- but at the time there're some guys from the semi pro rugby league in -- -- a bicycle -- And they came -- our school and then snapped up gifted to play that's I'd play that with a bunch of our friends and you know I was his wiry six -- 440 pound wiry kid that basically played rugby on a dare. That's. You know ended up being really I I had sharp elbows with matches. And you know edit eight -- of them you know a good a good wing player was out of the fat on the side and I was fast. But -- -- my -- quite a bit of Monday that there was no funding from the school and that it was it was all on its own. And I can imagine you know now that that's the way it is with most sports. Whether it's school sponsored not. You know it it's it's it is it's very sad because I think the lesson that it's important he couldn't whether it's. Club rugby cricket field football basketball baseball we don't even -- in just cheered. Pain and then wire bill -- think there are. Big character builders you know can get a perform in front of people. We know we have to learn how to get on a team that everybody have to work together no matter what you're doing on it. And you don't with the the putting -- you really really -- the opportunity. The other router -- the kids. Yeah I know and I was involved with band two -- one of the weird kids there was a man and sports and when I think back to high school and I think back to my social development. More than anything I think of those organizations and I was involved in in the sports teams in the -- the band. Because it was it was either it was it's -- either way considers sports to be a bit of an -- as well. There's just something to kind of expand. Your view of the world and and give you. You know the idea of teamwork and camaraderie and all that which was so important in -- Help to me like those lessons learned help me much more to pick had to say then algebra. You know I'm. And I was good student -- that two bit and led you know than those lessons that I learned from those programs. Made such a huge difference in my life and to see that there. It's hard to get those things funded anymore makes an event like this so so important in any event that can that can help to fund. He is an arts programs -- sports programs all these extra curricular. You know I served stamped and then thrown away it's -- it's not extra -- it's it's a part of the experience and then never watched it to do that. Yeah you're exactly right you know we've. We do college coaches to provide schools bed you know they're not ever gonna be. The top paid guy if you don't already view her gal uprooted do you put that they are doing it because. The important at. Is that the sport for teaching orbited gave back to them. You know when they are younger you know we do what we do here because I think someone bitter person. This sports you know the bad guy can do all the things made a difference to me how to get along people how to work as a team. You know when the going gets tough forty do you around you know I don't think you're drill learned that from a textbook he can. He's out there and in -- what people could put our world doesn't. -- -- an athletic events you know I had all the extracurricular activity he talked about are really worried where you learned. Those type things that are developing really when air pressure and high -- from it even -- younger now what other teams and you support the law. You know. Yes not to mention parents out there who vote listened explicitly say it also helps you kids stay out of trouble. It really does so many in my friends they did get into trouble I was there with them to that was a practice a rehearsal or whatever. And you know not to do my own horn of as a goody two issues -- still yell -- them I just wasn't with them at the moment they got in trouble. And this is something that helps. Doesn't know a lot of these coaches and people have parameters -- you know what there. Did you outside of school in field of departed back in part timer this time it is still haven't changed. Login here and keep in that sense of pride in and keeping yourself in shape keep yourself together to be a part of these programs is. -- important well enough to my soap boxing. Let's give back to the game one Letterman -- know where we're coming up here on in overtime I don't wanna hit one more time. Deal less Schwab bowl presented by express employment professionals is Saturday June 23 Hillsborough stadium there in Hillsborough.
