You're listening to mr. -- series of interviews with people interest in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. Hasn't mentioned before on this program I am a dog person and it seems like Portland isn't dog town thugs everywhere people looking after -- charities for dogs all of certain things. There is also an outfit out there looking out specifically. For cats and thank goodness they are 'cause believe it or not. We have more cats here than dogs I have with me Kathy Kobe PR manager for the cat adoption team how are you can't think I am grade. So you have this organization called cat adoption team or just cat is the acronyms yeah let's give everybody a little bit of background on yourself and what you do for -- Well I die in the PR manager -- any time you hear about -- about -- something that I've been able to get. Get out there I get the lucky guy that spreading that the good news this. It and the animals that we served Jihad is the largest. Cannot only animal shelter in the Pacific northwest. -- was founded in 1998. And has grown. From the geek speak about do you adopting out over 3000 to have every year is wild huge need. -- -- so right about dogs in Portland at Portland appeared dog you're live in the life of Riley who did everything to do with your dog. Cannot not as much although we are definitely making headway and that's something that cat specializes the end. But he's really been around for twelve years we specialize in cannot. We've adopted out over 24000. Cannot then we've opened up and be a little or. -- and they're still a huge need out there still acute need. Absolutely absolutely age is a you know he we have yet your humane society which course a wonderful wonderful organization and you've done work with them well. And they kind of specialize in pretty much any -- Yes I'm from god says to catch to rabbit -- my favorite rap. Bright right now we're brats say the last time we spoke about a year ago. You mentioned to me that rats for an ideal pet for children yes so why do you think that. Well first of all they're they're small second and and it's a -- found kind of kind of bad they don't live very long. Right I -- US commitment is not quite as you exactly exactly. But they they clean themselves just like you cannot you can train them my -- was trained to go into his aquarium I used to -- -- with me to work and people even in a shelter environment were not -- -- with Iraq but what I would come walking through the lobby everybody had a -- -- -- and you listen to the social creature. It's adorable little thing it's a better pets than you would -- yes yeah yes but don't count still are my number one -- well sure well we're gonna talk about absolutely. Now you guys have a kind of a central location yeah -- out ensure woods yet but that's not the only place you work out of. That's right here insurer way do we can how the test two and 5300 cats here. In our shelter but we also have off off -- adoption centers. At PetSmart all over the city and pet because and even at the padlock -- -- avenue. -- you're out in Hillsboro -- clock and that down and will the bill. Or even -- are close neighbors here in tiger and equality and you can find -- for adoption inside these doors. And yet it does help that can get more cast out there to show up. And I have had a dog hasn't sent a dog person I've had a dog pretty much my whole life who one -- another. And I have always had rescue dogs always gotten them from the humane society and I know -- humane society has have been fairly extensive adoption vetting process for for matching up -- with their owner either have to go through the interview process so I think it's it's not unlike adopting a child in this. Which it which is a very good thing any you guys have something similar. You -- we actually use aid scientific program I I I -- united is very scientific it was created by the -- I ASPCA. That national organization that based in New York City it's called meet your -- can't we use the feline portion of it. It enabled the count to tell us a little bit about themselves. We have done that civic interaction that we do with the -- within a day or so after they're brought -- traditional -- He did a real clear picture on how gregarious or social they are confident they are. Is it it and it'd be a -- cat that would do well in a household for the lots of activity or one now would be better off with a quieter home. I am with an -- I don't understand what in the cat goes and hides under the -- -- we kept -- the keys we get there meet your match profile and they're kind of color. All color -- because when you come to a shelter any shelter what you're looking -- daughter -- even around it. -- he -- this film many available. How do you make that decision does it meet your match program help the adopt her find a cast that better meet their expectations. By going through this process -- Dr. Phil about this great little nineteen question. I call it a Cosmo like service is -- we do have a link up to our web site and you can click on it. Answer the questions and built for you and tell you week feline personality would best work -- sorry for your expectations of a cast. And that website is cat adoption team dot org yeah pension. It's really helped people get over there I guess -- misconception on and on cap personality based on color. Mean. If Turks. All right I had a a tabby cat when I was growing up the next -- let me do. You'll let me address the Bob -- taken on the wagon and in which was the -- every not every calorie -- going to be and. We all know that orange striped cat statement -- -- -- yes that's true that's -- BA did. Don you know what specific breed characteristic. -- dared not end this. Think that he get a cat that is the tiny hill let me talk a little bit morbid still going to be a -- Where you may get a yelled a Labrador or a pointer and you know those dogs -- be high energy working dog right now. They've done meet your match per and it didn't really of the great way. Are -- the people who go on the web site -- the survey there aren't they can print it out bring it to us and walk through that shelter and look for. Their color and they're still a lot of Catholic -- from. I would imagine so I -- you take that Vanessa sure what did you look at all the different Alex you have around the city. There's probably many many many many many many more than the 250 to 300 -- has there. Yes yes Kelly -- the -- right now is the largest population of animal in the city that needs help we did you know chemical called every single day from people. And they found a straight toward positive banning cow or they have to give up their cab because they they lost their job and we can move so cats really are in need -- a lot has a lot of help from from not only shelters but from everybody else there. They guys also going to be speaking of you kind of keeping the population under control. Is that certainly has. I would since the biggest issue with cats the is that that the population can swing wildly out of control he'll at a yes sue you guys are doing something about that you have a new a spay and neuter program. Yes yes -- -- it's kind of didn't -- we we -- both ends of the candle if you will head to try to get down to the middle we wanted to adopt as many as we can't. Into loving home. And we also want to prevent the birth have as many as we can't hack and I and a lot of other organization pier in port land. Are all train aged ten dollar feline to fix it called the bay and saved program for people who are receding. -- public at this then they may qualify to get their cat or kitten Bader neutered for ten dollars -- it is really good -- all. Fourth something that everybody knows will not only help the over population. But it'll help their kitty there's absolutely keep -- out from brain keep your -- and getting pregnant. Again that last stop the yelling stop the raw means. And they are neutered doesn't cause some of the things a lot of people might might expect. There's another myth out there that you get your -- debate -- then you can you go from a six pound cat two twenty. Does that there's been a -- Walt -- cause weight gain excessive eating well. Once you -- greater neutered they'll they'll be healthier the are not at risk at getting. If certain conditions there there is done some things that you -- I can get if she's -- fertile her whole life and believe they're not. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Really if you don't get cute female -- she will go -- -- teach her entire life. While things also happen quickly on the other end I believe last time we spoke you said that -- -- pregnant as early as five months. Yes they they certainly can't think cap can come up to three litters and maybe even eight kitten did not live there. We can see that that the population -- -- skyrocket to half has a goal this year. Sixteen. Almost a thousand then cats or kittens that are owned by the public -- while we have a -- 976. They engineers for the public in this. This band -- program is not only get help us reach our goal which will help. -- is over population that will help. Help everybody out there. By getting their accounts they -- neutered then they know that they've done the right thing and they don't have to worry about whether their cat gets out in my house my pet kitten that they're gonna have to place. Now without the -- save program typically any year how many cats do you fix. Well we can pick up Ford about some -- personal everything look at that come to our shelter. Is -- -- -- right if they need to be spayed or neutered some of the adult -- come to a already. Sick that we we average about true thousands and well over 2000 cat that we won't kick in a year Waltz. And they like at the that include the catch here at the shelter. Sure sure sure. Never gonna say please enter your goals -- -- in 2000 -- you say that's a pretty lofty goal but I guess not. Yeah well it is pretty locked because the only way we can make a dent. In and in the numbers of stray and on one account that are out there is to really ramp up the effort. Last year we did just under 400. Outside. They then you're just BetaNews forum for Catholic owned by the public so we are really increase in our number making a real big meet again. Uptick on it and the other other organizations that are involved in the program are as welcome -- that is the only way that we're gonna get a handle on this. So when you're saying that you wanna fix -- around -- thousand doesn't closes the outside capsules -- the ones coming into the program not the one -- are actually your own their own stats and trying to say yes you don't cans. Got phone catch an apparent catch coalitions -- the part that program though they. There is an outlet for people that are caring for -- cannot -- or if you have a population of straight out. There is the way to get them -- as well. And what's the best way to schedule one of those appointments. Definitely calling the cat adoption team you can you can reach us. And all this information is on our web site cat adoption team dot org that you can reach justify those three. Nine Q five. 8903. We scheduled appointment for weekdays only and will provide everybody with all the information they need on how to care for the cat before the surgery and then after the surgery. They maybe the best thing would be to go to cat adoption team dot org and click on that. They -- discount button which is on the left hand side of the home page. Is give everybody all the details on this day and -- program how to qualify for the fans they program this ten dollar Beilein fix. And the other programs that are out there that offer low cost. Or reduced cost spay neuter. I think you don't qualify for the ten dollars they -- you may qualify for a low cost. And even those Serbs are really good discount as well in a Catholic four under under fifty dollars. And in the long run. Totally worth it yeah it's gonna cost you a lot of decisions with your -- exactly and then also should be say they that they need to be able to bring their hat to you ensure went. Yet get please we need for people to be able to come to us. Group with their -- and then be able to pick up their -- after the surgery we. Unfortunately right now don't have any way to come out to people the working on it right that that would really really be the key is if we can't. We get to have a meeting place down in Hillsborough one out and in forest grove one you know one and quality from a weekend -- it. And at the cat -- they are people bring their kitty that we. Another little surgical tents yes a little better it'll match that's right yes. Step late and there actually is a model for that type of a program that we are we are looking for. If you're just joining us you're listening to -- go to a series of interviews with people of interest in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. I'm your host -- Douglas my guest today is Kathy -- the PR manager for the cat adoption team. The largest -- only adoption program in the north west so we just talked about this disband neuter program what you guys are also have other programs you're involved with for instance the cat food bank. Yes there are Kathy being kind of goes hand in glove with our -- service because validity in 2000 an age when the economy really -- That's and quickly here in Oregon needed it really has not lifted itself up out and rest. The bottom of the barrel but we knew that we can get something to help people because we think hundred tons of news reports coming from across the country. People needing to relinquish their pet dog and -- Q animal shelters I mean the numbers were skyrocketing. Because caddie is an adoption center. We can't take every -- that it comes to our door as we adopt out then we can bring -- the end though. We wanted to make sure that we can help our partner organizations mainly be animal control agencies. By trying to -- -- the number of cats that me need to come sit down because somebody is struggling financially. We opened up the first pet food bank in the area say -- -- bank in do you have 2000 an -- and I November. He had just skyrocketing we give out 300 pounds of food in here and we gave out over a thousand pounds in November. And this year since January -- a month we have consistently given out over 2000 pounds of conduct 2000 pounds is the content yeah. We are open -- two hours on the first Sunday of every month. And we help. Upward 230. People every month feed their -- so that they can keep their account with them right in the hall. Because as you said earlier one of old and large reasons people get rid of their cats. Is financial. Yeah exactly exactly. Now over over the 27 months we've been openly given out 45000. Pounds Calhoun. And 111000. Cans of wet suit. We do you about later as well. They believe it and how we run out of glitter which makes me happy to share that day more people are keeping their captain's side. Now we also work with two meals on wheels centers thanked us so that's it is going to help homebound seniors that owned kiddies in assists through the -- in patient program. I forest grove and right -- can talk to the floor yes believe we've guide once a month drivers we'll take cat food and -- -- we have it. And delivering TV cat owners that are on the route that once the itself we're looking to expand that program adding another center hopefully by the end of the year -- working with Washington county -- the -- -- project and and it's been a real great partnership for everybody because I mean the mission of our cat food bank the right helping people keep their -- That's fantastic -- -- people -- if you are -- and it is and you are struggling under the cap and bank the first Sunday of every month. Information is on our web site had a dot Centene dot org right in on the left hand now I've got a link for the -- Bank. If you want to help our cat owners in this community. And even people who don't necessarily. Think it catches the top priority on yelling their life -- maybe they're not account lover. You can understand that people love their account -- want to keep their -- to him by donating. About a kid about that litter the campus is it to our -- bank you're helping your neighbor keep their -- With them. And we all know the benefits of having a -- absolutely struggling young got to have somebody that pleasure having. Content and you bet yeah now you've mentioned these programs -- like money to. Reach out a little further than you guys already are -- to do that you need help you need people you need volunteers. Yeah if someone wants to volunteer their here in what we're talking about they think it sounds great cause and they want new give me some time and or money does that done through the -- -- as well. Well he isn't that a marvel Hendry thinks can be done. Its Internet yet. The cat adoption team dot org really has all the information about everything that that is cat adoption -- -- we guided a link so people can make any easy secured donation to our organization. Can be a one time donation and we also how monthly donation options as well we called -- me out team you can set up to make -- -- 1015. Twenty or thirty dollar monthly donation for years the gaining new organization. -- should be mentioned you guys are 501 C three. Yes we are 501 C three which means that you or your donation and his tax deductible and approved by law are -- -- -- -- Don't count is that we we have a very small -- we only have 28 people that work here at this facility we've got about 400 volunteers says that help -- how so we are we are great -- that they -- and we're also very good stewards of the money that does come to us we really spend it wisely and and I would say. The large. A portion of it goes directly to the care of the cast -- does not goes toward frivolous things that also heard. The company parties. -- -- I thought that that definitely not -- -- they get donations support is in very key to a nonprofit. They people also can volunteer we have got a lot of volunteer opportunities crimes helping at the front desk. Tune cleaning up after the cat -- they they are animal recognizable can be a little messy is -- look at -- is. That once stood out to me the last time we talk it had Cutler seems like the most amazing job ever. Well you know you feel along think. This all there is no place to live. Right regardless of how wonderful it is and how much we we care for the animals the -- and the great treatment we give them. This is not a home -- if those volunteers coming in and they spend quality time with the individual cap they hold them they play with they brush. And all of this helped improve the -- outlook also helped us know what's going on with Italian only move. Is the key -- getting depressed not gloomy not grooming him or herself properly -- need to be -- -- -- those types of things we can find out -- -- -- what are -- comes to -- I. And I imagine also pick up on personality traits of the animal to help put the whole match program. Exactly exactly. Says we have blocked the volunteer opportunities even found that people can do from home. We've got event that people can be a part of we get toasted our five K run and we had about a hundred volunteers help without without you guys are big island live auction and you -- Coming up in November and we definitely need volunteers. To help out without as well so -- lots of opportunity. There people can help by adopting. The Euro because that's -- -- may not seem like like a way to help but it usually is that they think how did that. We're an adoption center so as people adopt were able to bring more TDs in from our partner organizations which of the animal control agencies or from the public though the more can easily find homes for the more kiddies we can help. As well though if you're thinking about adopting it. This really is a good time to come down to the -- -- we've got lots of great -- Haiti's young kiddies. I kittens teenagers. You can adopt 12. If I did I cats are a social creatures who adopting -- this is a good thing as well. -- absolutely and we're we are coming up on the universe time but I also wanna mention that you guys have got Melinda the social media world. Oh yes yes man please friend us on FaceBook. Tweet with us on Twitter we have MySpace is we have a YouTube. I think another count people posted videos of their cannot it's it's really delightful I thought. That's pretty much own YouTube yes they seem like there's a new hilarious cat video everywhere each. Yes yes you all -- think they know no bounds. Threat detection and then of course also you're your blog on organ like dot com. Yes I I knew I do have a blog I am I right mainly about how can honestly about the organization. But about count things that things that I find that come across my -- gory things that come of interest to me or my own kiddies. I also blog about rescues that I -- to a guy and a member of the technical animal rescue came in just recently we were able to help an eight year old doberman and that just could not make it down off of Mount Hood they all land that timber line trail which is about forty some odd miles and it got a point the dog is what I just can't do it right I gaining yards from the injuries on his on -- -- -- really helped him come down off the mountain which was found.
