You're listening to -- -- -- the series of interviews with people of interest in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington I'm your host had -- my guest today is in and -- for an organization that I'm sure a lot of people have heard a lot about especially this time a year when the March of -- holds their annual march for babies. It goes on all over the country and it's coming up real soon here in the Portland area at -- rose -- comments people -- seventh registration starts at 8 AM. The start time for Milwaukee is 9 AM and you can sign up and march for babies -- -- -- -- -- all that a little bit later in the meantime let's meet our guest Amy Patterson sandy how are you. I'm good thank you how are you. I'm doing very well so before we didn't go in on the March of Dimes slits a kick things off to let our listeners know a little bit about yourself and how you came to be involved with the organization. There are routinely -- not that the -- -- when our twins clean enough that were born thirteen weeks early and then -- -- years old when the babies at a hospital of -- -- our web site and other information kids learn more about her baby's medical condition and then we also got involved at the march have been me through learning about it his mother parent to have premature babies. And they're participating in night and really kind of -- of community and support with them actually diet -- -- -- -- -- and I think learn more about the organization and the -- -- they've supported and that technology they've supported you helped premature babies -- became the became yearly event are the only. Cool so they didn't do if we haven't gathered by now the general idea behind to march of time this is. You who help moms have full term pregnancy is that correct just in general. Yet that their mission is to help our moms have healthy dreadful term pregnancy and and the convenience that are boring pick our case and it can provide important services to help those babies and family. Very cool and of course they do a ton of research all year round have been doing that for. Boy how long now. 75 years and after it's really exciting being ambassadors as scared as fit in their 75 anniversary. So and merchandise and -- heavily involved and I'm. Accordingly picks and the -- -- like get mentioned but they've started Alec and supporting the research. That created the polio vaccine. Because it cannot and help eradicate polio or so from polio to premature -- Merchandise with American help mainly the BB. So even if you -- not touched directly by the March of -- if you're having a child it's a good bet to think of it as though they have had some hand in it because all their research and such is certainly played a large part in. All of that goes into bringing moms to full term. Yes exactly exactly and you imagine Q a couple of other things I'm actually I'm done. There appeared that they really focused sign on the need for -- act said preventing them -- can be fat can be mean I was feeling and you know thick and I'm dancing -- health and they've also done other research that a help with brain development and being eased and I'm turning green elements. And over all of a good nutrition and good prenatal care for moms and it supported things like on smoking cessation program -- Pretty much all around and I think actually I've just been involved in helping babies be born healthy. Very cool so you're involved in their annual fund raiser here in the march for babies and you guys have been doing this since your twins are part cracked. Yes that's who we play here but -- here -- almost every year and they're part we have been very involved and -- the marriage should be. Mickelson to what is the march for babies. Well the -- -- is much -- premier fundraising event. The biggest fundraising event for the whole year I'm like you mentioned earlier it all over the country. And iron and is on April 27 coming up and a couple weeks pretty much you've read my knee and he never talking to friends PM me. This is something neo that we were able to get consistent sponsorship or are keenly teams. Which is really a great. It's a great way to cannot let businesses that we were equipped -- for example we've talked whereas our pediatrician and our pediatric dentists. I have regular dentist. And even my husband's employer in and they helped contribute -- in nineteen Philip it would -- -- new program in America and has been I think it's been really effective then. Helping to raise money so anyway it is a really fun event it's the only orient and my -- -- is a part because they have the twenty mile walk and which black folks still and then they had that the only unlocked and not so we can't we bring -- head we bring friends who bring their head and solid global Larry now. Little -- -- an ally in its its Geary Claxton but the land than it. Music and and good it is and everybody marching in you know walking around the -- quarter and that and I area at Q -- -- beanie. -- at any premature raising money up until that big event. And and then everybody participate can you think you haven't. You bring your money there and in -- drop in the kitty India -- Exactly -- -- cool there isn't anything they create -- celebrate can accomplish and. And just let others know if you're not -- super close to the Portland area near within our the reach of our airwaves here. There as well also Clark County event that is on 8 April 27 as well that's in Esther short park the same times AM and 9 AM. And then in Salem. Also at the C Salem health is where that kicks off. -- -- all this information in March for babies dot org which is also. Where you go to sign up so obviously you have taken on this role as an official ambassador for. March of Dimes what does that mean exactly and how does that fit in with your family. And I think that question I'm. This. Is so I am an ambassador keenly. I believe that far back and that organic chocolate Washington -- there could certainly like spokespeople from March of -- who are out there telling people are story. Raising awareness about the work in March of Dimes because helping to facilitate fundraising could imagine for BD. This kind of being out there and friends and as ambassador -- -- and radio interviews and -- -- and -- he has and that's been special and raving about it and my children have that it -- special event that's. School handbook for the entire school and for -- -- says about their role as an ambassador and it's been really great because. A lot of people had no idea -- and are born prematurely. And the consequences of that and the work at the merchandise that's that's been. It's literally like a father around distant and raise that Atlanta had to get more people involved and having more people support action that is. Well this seems to me that it's a natural conclusion that. If this is you know a -- kids there are six years older twins Lehman Elsa and her oldest morrow who's eight and you guys are still involved with the March of Dimes that with the hope and support that they give to a -- goes beyond just the time of birth. I have bleeped out and it gave us Perkins actually the media and their parent Kelli and I -- that our current thirteen weeks premature. -- -- there's some lingering health that he -- and we actually went through three years of early intervention service says where we had speech and occupational therapy and physical therapy. Special education apparent setback and I think they've graduated from about which is great but it does go to show that EST do you need that continued support. I can't -- and grow and a merchandise and provide that kind of sense of community is important mentioning a singer and I'm actually looking at at the plane you know we feel that we directly benefitted from the -- March of Dimes has died helping me baby is and we wanna give back. We want to do what we can't help continue the research. Continued fighting so we can figure out you know. Why these babies being born premature let queen do to prevent that and how quick -- -- help those that are born prematurely. So in the greater scheme of things how did this premature births affects your children's lives up till now. Well early on -- it was pretty -- mile an outdoor garden pretty spec. They had severe breathing issues they had a hard -- fact that they had Anemia they had apnea and break -- idea which apparently got very low the needed help with. Breathing and feeding campaign. I need is that I'll kind of monitors anywhere in the hospital and for quite some time I'm -- in the hospital for 69 days while he had -- While it's all you wanna do that you saw you just wanna get the moment take care of them. Oh my god yes yes yes he had also been -- 63 games. In the end so we went to do what we like an effort has been that he roller coaster where they would start doing well and then they would do really -- and they -- would -- well again and you know you never knew when you went into the hospital to -- -- and kind of let your morning. You know managers -- a day or bad days. And he had and Bakley. And and that openly analysts few days old we are out of given a 5050 chance it has to tie the students. Which is just. And I'm actually heartbreaking it's yeah it's even an he had been called a pulmonary hemorrhage which says as a result of his heart defect. -- had that -- had to leave an entire week have to see if he would be strong enough and survive and -- to have like didn't territory so ballot early start. I am very -- and I. They're very long and very heartbreaking and I think it's bad and then they finally came home around Christmas time the holes which is unbelievable. My two year old daughter my act. But I -- able to meet an unprecedented. Well sure it is as she can't see -- kids can't see the babies doesn't turn us. -- -- -- at the time the -- there and that did not have an event show you could not allow. Some children of that age and you know while and -- -- -- viewing and out so we'll bring her home -- the baby's. But honestly a lot of attempted and luckily they'll -- -- are hooked up to -- machines. And they were so. Ian skinny and you know I think you can look what lake what you would deter opinions aren't that it was really hard from our understanding he had had but I'll -- you let. That and -- When we you know after pleading Arab Mark Sweeney at the hospital and also the first -- Mellman. Can outspend her cart C. -- captain and -- sleeping and my attitude and my family is holding Mara and things you carry I didn't. You remember that but keep holding Barak and Mara goes to kick the -- -- sister for the. Personally I'd do that that's the best yeah and we'll never. Yeah I have I have 22 girls myself and four year old and into natural and for -- -- happened to -- commit. And -- that moment is some else. This -- and I can only imagine after having gone through everything you guys went through -- extra special there. It and was it was then and just now you know my intent that the archdiocese and the -- that they have contributed that help might be need to get to that point. You know it ever did so grateful. But then you know so he came home we started all the therapy they talked about senator had said BP newborn twins -- -- just about six pounds when they came out. He had made. Here we -- starting -- about every. -- else. But this something else packing up my you know my little babies and I can hear all that -- into the -- -- go away and it's it's pretty wild and had. Led by the blessing -- he have a two year old they're usually very calm and just will gladly just sit there are nearby and be patient and helpful yeah fifth. Luckily I -- I -- I am I'm very looking at our I had the most caring compassionate -- Karo and her house hopefuls. -- -- The best thing that scares especially big sister premium plan that I could ever imagine. Yeah I have very lucky in that department took -- she went what that's all people appointment he had knack. It's amazing how intuitive and empathy empathetic -- those little ones can be. They picked up on a lot more than we think. Yeah. If you're just joining us you're listening to match -- a series of interviews with people of interest in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington I'm your host Ted Douglas. My guest today is Amy Patterson sandy she is in -- ambassador for the March of Dimes and we're talking about how the March of Dimes is certainly helped her and her family in their situation she hit too premature. Twins about six years ago and now they are quite relatively healthy and -- for -- all the great work commercial dimes does end we're also talking about the march for babies which is their big annual fundraising event. It is coming up here April 27. At the rose quarter comments there also locations going on in Vancouver and and in Salem so it is certainly go to march for babies dot org to find out information there registration starts at 8 PM on that day April 27 and the U. Walker begins at 9 AM so certainly yeah I could see why you and your family are ambassadors for the March of Dimes you -- surely went through quite an ordeal with your kids and have come out. Relatively unscathed on the other side which is wonderful wonderful and of course without the the help of a March of -- in the racers they put in that may not be the case that makes total sense and use the march for babies coming up here is as they set a fund raiser. So how is that a fund -- how is this thing making money for the March of Dimes. -- -- eighteen which I'm part of keynesian need to and let that thank family mean sure and I am so that -- had -- hard the much that I -- my can be without there are the -- teams -- but we also have corporate sponsors and corporate -- different businesses that have their own team than. You are registered walker and and then the -- without Gladys and and -- -- -- your online. Which is a really attractive way to raise finance. Or just asking a person are. Holding fund raising events like we have done a good team and all that money and then it goes for March of Dimes and 75 cents of every dollar. Goes to support mom. To have help people campaign scene and make it an extremely in the beanie should be be people aren't stick market and sell it. You have really great way to know that -- healthy babies all across the country and specifically an art and the flop. If you finally you go to these marches a year or -- and -- walks that you're fighting that day the people involved are. People who have had similar situations to your own or are they from all walks of life that just one -- support. You know I I do you find that a lot of them have had an experience what I'm -- any -- had a baby. I was not born healthy but there all of our all walks of life there on the people you think you care about -- I think he's older and be serious -- my good doesn't care about babies to look at. I don't under the integrated. -- and anyone that -- -- -- our children you know can get involved at that it may have had some really -- Andre Perry did you know that the money is being used attractively. And so many different ways to support children being born healthy -- -- -- what better way than to give babies a healthy start. Sure then you guys have a goal purchasing new -- -- freely what you're looking to raise for this event. Yeah I actually think you know what we have -- -- -- I hadn't yet learned to -- establishment volume here he had and we kind of gone the other night this year that we have raised about when he 500. Hell that's our. Yeah I think I did today. The diet and the overwhelming support that I have felt by our local community and stepped. It's different -- action on and it meant a lot Turkey vehemently we had. You know local businesses that have helped sponsor commercial I'm raising -- -- -- -- -- and hang out what does that sound Hamburg and at the profits from one night went sparking a late -- one all yeah I have. Fantastic. And found that translation I can't thank them and what Glen post and it has been that pollute which could get a couple weeks ago. We raised about 500 dollar about morning where men are instructed donated their time and we had that women from Oliver lesson plan and -- area coming and you help the fourteen Indiana March -- -- though. It it's been really great and even displayed -- the leaking out in explaining our story to people lie and and that the sport has gotten back has been just wonderful. Yes quite inspirational. So do you go when you donate this money when you go to do with the you walk then -- where does that money go how does that use but departure times. Well I actually had that in great information because that we could save money that's spent nationally even sure. A lot of -- is going to hear every September premature birth and how to prevent premature any but at some of it goes. Bikini -- right here and Oregon and southwest Washington. And he's getting grant help I know when we get prenatal care. Held -- and preterm birth prevention programs. Smoking cessation program also the -- I -- outside -- in our region about 35000 families Sierra -- alcohol than none. The benefit to taking college I could get before pregnancy and during pregnancy. To help prominent cigarette and tobacco use and the importance of good prenatal care pediatrician and newborn screening but they do market in the area. The merchant bank help lines and -- family support program. And this provided support and comfort are feeling to have the BB in the -- And they've reached about. -- 2200 families a year and they also rate here in our area are spending a million dollars. And research dollars. On how to prevent preterm birth. And brain damage to new market it is diagnosis and treatment of feelings and growth failure and more so a lot of blood money being spent right here are gonna help they need. Then that's fine you know we -- as many people as possible to get out to the march for babies and appraisal little money if a whole bunch of people raise a little bit of money adds up to a whole lot of money in fact the March of Dimes is looking to raise with the march of babies this year. One point two million in organ and -- Washington and a 111. Million across the country. That is crazy. But quite doable. -- quite an ideal lighting like he's mad -- everyone gets -- -- aren't together and actually we get the job done. Anyway it never did that is not to make it started -- too great speaker fat. And EP just go to www. March for babies got word. -- can start thinking right now piano and even if you raise a few hundred -- he had that money is gonna be you know -- spent on helping. And be viewed companies and then here locally and art and. Earlier you mentioned that you are an ambassador for the local chapter and this is broken -- to the chapters across the country. What does that local chapter do you specifically for this area. Well I think that mentioning a little earlier that the local chapter does Ekene -- access -- education and yeah I and that -- support. -- -- money indicted means and right here. Very very cool so it's all stand right here in the community and then of course that your son of a -- and it goes to the the national efforts. To make sure that you know. The ladies out there are bringing these kids a full term. The happy great wonderful and you know it is a father of two young girls myself so I am really couldn't think of a better charity to to support well we we are coming up here on the into her time with Amy. But is there anything else he would delight to cover. I -- yes I I would I just gonna wrap up by saying that. You know aren't feeling -- -- babies because her apparent working militarily. And nationally one and nine babies is part of immaturity. -- prematurely that's a half a million -- at the air at 5000 can have babies and organic chocolate Washington. And so you know playing a team that it's not too late to sign up from average for babies that are. Or Fontana locker that you know or check out our team. Web site and we are easy and eat. And that WWW. At that march for babies on the word. Back last. Team. -- last -- being. And sandy is SA ND. I I ES. -- about that yet it -- at the end DIE series breaking CNB bank you can learn more about our story you know I ended the great work that the March of -- does but -- -- -- Consider explaining or purporting you know our team are another team. He had being part had that tripped up merchandise bank does every year with much -- BP's support. Babies being -- parent and being born for -- being born healthy. Fantastic contesting and of course you know if you and do not have the time to go to the margin and participate. Or you don't know anyone who has a team you certainly donate. To -- team. -- terror mart and babies dot org. Slash teams slash -- Or you just go to -- in March for babies start their record and donate there's also just donate button. -- -- you can donate any time without need to participate if you don't have the time to do that. But we do encourage you to get out there and again the event the march for babies is happy April 27. The rose -- comments. And you go to march for our baby -- or to sign up registration is at 8 AM that morning start time is at 9 AM and there are also other locations in the region Salem.
