-- intimate just -- a series of interviews with people of interest in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. I'm your host. And Douglas -- as -- -- any family -- before. With the -- hi if I can understand how people are having a difficult time Eckstein properly on a reasonable budget it is very easy to eat a lot on -- full budget if you're -- terribly but to eat well not so simple little -- bit more to task not only because of the good foods tend to be a little bit more expensive but. Also if you've noticed but people are really be educated on how to eat right so much anymore when I grew up it was all live for -- groups and feeling you got a lot more information and growing up but dammit we don't see that's much anymore so there's an organization out here that is so trained to help change that. One of website click at a time and that is -- a group called a food hero we're gonna find out all about it from our good friend Loren Toby -- -- -- -- Hi grape fed thinks they're -- me. Absolutely so before we had talked about food here Alyssa little and learn a little bit about yourself and how you came to be part of this group. -- -- though I AM registered dietitian and nutrition educator and also have a family and try to cut and the Kelsey so you know you can't please them or get. Oregon State University extension for about six years now and before that I was -- University of Illinois extension has allowed. So. An extension bill that is -- in the US the delivering -- information on healthy eating and cooking and so this is part of our nutrition education program city here is. Excellent excellent image of that assistance and help people learn how to even better and how to feed their families better and keep put in budget Howell what is true hero. Right so food here is actually a social marketing campaign which. Really does mean that -- is marketing. To all the lake any -- for example fast food restaurant would do the same but we used them to have created social good though it's so hopefully. Encourage healthy eating lower obesity -- And -- -- -- marketing campaign has many channels but one of the main channel is our web site C hero that orgy but we're also out there in the community at promoting his heroes though. Some of the listeners might have seen us on billboards or rarely have nearly a hundred educators around the feet teaching in schools and we have other ways to -- -- -- -- Who is in other ways -- -- -- together by the web site but yet. Glad they could greatly -- trying court seven. Yeah has its true hero dot org. And I'm so how was it created. So it has a long proud that we get glasses and really interesting needs assessment through phone surveys throughout Oregon and also focus group. And believe it started outlets simply. Bullet that says that she's social marketing to increasing vegetable intake for oregonians. And through matter research we found out that over 50% of those we surveyed said that where they currently fine. Information healthy eating it on line and that's also where they want to find it and so we never thought we created web site but. Did you read to him and I want to I don't think -- -- now -- all it is it is only mean alien as. -- the father or family of four and Medicaid does lose the majority of the grocery shopping. It is really difficult to you know how to feed your family best. And there are so many different theories and ideas. And instructions out there on how to do is such a thing. But he -- a lot of them you know don't agree with -- each other and. It's true and they know we heard that and are in our focus group in our surveys we heard loud and clear that. Her moms and dads everything you know what we believe that we already know we are you know he'd eat fruits and veggies and they don't really understand. All these guys think he'd tell us so we know that we just want to -- to do it you know needed to tell us more about how to do it. Like get seven during the day or around computer put more guidelines so it's interesting that you point that out. Right right thing is is so expensive like you leave the good news. Is spending it's really easy to buy is some chips 'cause there are you know it's -- nine cents for drive back to chips. Ready and we did ask you you what are some barriers to eating fruits and veggies and definitely cost. People felt cost of the barrier. Especially for freshly committees and we also learned that we're gonna end and our survey they really felt like fresh with about. But you really can't use canned frozen fresh dried or even non veggie years. Reduces do you get in all the pretend that you need but certainly perishable. -- is -- perishable -- -- bad. So that's another part to worry about your budget. So you recommending going more for the nonperishable stuff and -- in bulk. Yet considering considering all of them what can -- then what you're feeling like the heat. A lot of the recipes on the heroes they really have an option he could either canned or -- Fresh but it certainly anti hero -- where we have lack of examples -- recipes that do you show you how to use canned. It and they really did taste good and well so you're healthy food. Right right right yeah I was browsing through the web site earlier and just saw some very simple things you don't. Especially for snacks that seems -- the hardest things I have two young children two year old and afford a half year old. And of course there always wanting snacks and treats and daddy this I want us. And it's like -- that that's what meals before you have a meal and then maybe give us accurate good he's -- good. And that is so hard to find some -- To snack on that is good demeanor have been trying to get them. I'm very into you know -- grapes and oranges and things like that they seem to like that as a sweetening -- taste like candy to but I saw like just to have very simple just a little orange drink there was nothing more than -- period oranges good teaspoon of Vanilla and some cold water. Yes that's one thing for sure a lot of merit it is so easy and they really taste good you kid glove committees. We really have Lionel outside educator about they're they're always giving paid. -- -- And then we really find that with kids they just -- committees. That we do have lots and lots of Jenkins committee recipes found there need to protect them pancakes he can even make them ahead and just keep them in -- refrigerator. Or we italics those small English muffin Pete says it like those -- get a few more minutes. I think that the tools section on our website that was allowed you can find some -- -- the key leaders who work for snacking now. That's great because I -- those are those are the things that when you become apparent especially that you know -- did you do that stuff you've got to get out on your own end and me who got help if you go hit the Internet usage takes its destruction. Eating they need to question people are always asking -- about. Yeah -- and virtually my my wife is incredibly picky -- and adults so my children and the parents have. That's up from her which is great it's like no don't give them four options for dinner -- we're having and that's that's. One other recommendations. They can play and to be good role models that's. This is gone and I'm gonna play that back far shall -- -- at. Good -- Malulani. So you have those tips and tricks you have led the recipes on the website what else we find there. We'll look at the main thing that the things we know about backpack. Practices that make it web sites these days -- to keep a real simple the people donkey competed and they know where to go. And the though there really that humane thing now one other thing you can find them there is something called the hero monthly. Which is if you want some information monthly can get in -- and backs. We have I wouldn't call the newsletter had it's a monthly kind of more like a magazine is it just one page front and back and also has been a great recipe on the back. But really actionable. Hit. A simple thing you can veto. -- meanders on there yes and interesting referred for helping a budget for food. Which anticipating that people just don't realize how to do and they even this year but a pretty good -- their money but in doing my taxes for last year has gone through all my bank statements and categorizing things and -- to what we spent on food and where we spend our money on food and he'd be if you are wanna make it crystal clear why you should just go grocery shopping and try instead of restaurants as much as possible try to win that. -- -- whenever our goal -- primary -- to get people be more fruits and -- come and that's just simply by having all of her recipes including fruits and -- But the other one is to get people eating more home -- to feel comfortable and confident in copying and treating me and and we've known none of us have a lot of time. So also making it so that you can maybe -- coming on Sunday they'll last the whole week or maybe only shop a couple times. A month. We talked with Haiti some time the other is the budget proceed tip that it has for a simple steps that will give you an idea then of how much you're spending. Well that really helps is when he when he gets around to trying to buy healthier foods -- healthier foods are more expensive and if you can. Budget and the rest your food spending and out a little better like usual the more by the healthier stuff. Yes and I mean some healthier foods also that he will depend what the feeling fine because sometimes we'll work with families -- -- spending a lot and something immediate and a healthy. And then we can show them you know if you do especially with -- -- -- to consider all the different form. And what can feed them they might be something that is affordable. Bright bright red depending on the on the timing your your mind then they can be more expensive. And what form -- so -- you know one of the Hershey's tour that the special that's a key and corn we -- a lot of recipes that we'll have canned corn in the Arab frozen broccoli. Then maybe getting -- couple extra bag -- seen what recipes match. A special that we can come. Right usually find yourself wasting less food -- -- suffer way. Etc. that's very. If you just join us you're listening to masters cup in a series of interviews with people of interest in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington I'm your host Ted Douglas. I guess today is Lauren Toby cheesy program coordinator of the organ state university extension nutrition education program and they have a website called food hero dot all work. That easier to help you learn more about how to feed your family healthy healthier foods how to budget out you're your your food budget a little better but mainly did the did the teaching you how to how to -- better give me some recipes. And various information about what kind of food is out there and you are nutritionist yourself what exactly does that mean. Yes I'm registered dietitian which means that I data to create an accredited university and then at university of Illinois and then to have CD that you take and national exam. From the American Dietetic Association turned out how the academy of nutrition and dietetic. And if you pass that then you can become a registered dietitian and then every five years you need to do. Several hours the continuing had to keep up your credentials and then I'll have graduate degree in nutrition as well. You've been busy I didn't look this is yet I loved nutrition and healthy eating out look you're much work. I love the you're required to update every five years -- -- because certainly -- just you know I'm forty years old -- did all the times that they flip flop on -- milk is good or bad for you -- -- how much you should have enemy does that. Seems like it's always changing and always finding out new information. Yes the pretty young field. Certainly they're glad everything is still going on and then things are changing and we're finding new new thing. As -- -- so either and there are a lot of recipes on this website true hero dot org how many do you guys have on there. At least 200 we might be now we actually -- we had rescued all the time so a lot of educators to Wear down. People come online they've suggesting -- lets you add new recipes on the -- The schools who's kind of this and -- place for all of these. Yeah I went they've definitely alive it's not just that they can that they newly created and -- and we never update so we're always updating recipes and then the potential of some actionable. Tips on how to hook you -- plan and and create the recipes they also are being added to all the time the -- them. That's great -- so do you have any favorite son there. Well IA could -- -- -- time and I have lots of favorite the one that -- make a laugh at how. The one that then I'm prepared people recipe travel program that called cowboys Fallon. Which is a great recipe it also has -- an infraction. With the C then you cannot change how you make it but basically. Again. A lot of people said that it kind of what you may come old school recipe. Beans and tomatoes and -- you can put in there and some linemen vinegar and you can use that in -- anyway if he can either in the filed just to dispel it. As even with chips butter crackers time to make a healthier meal by adding though that even our meal again. So that's one of these hundred pancake recipe is on there. One -- make a light at the end of the month when in my DNA -- and I think it -- favorite pancakes. You can -- they've -- things that but it -- let -- so fluffy integrate them. Yes and I just made the other night pumpkin that's held the whenever a newer ones and David's amazing it might be my favorite new recipe on the call -- Pumpkin stuff shallow and he can't keep the pumpkin but it kind of interesting but the other delicious. So -- -- you need the shells that -- like imposter -- talk show. Outlook mean asks us to -- -- very. Good and see if I'd been hit -- made this weekend and it was. So interesting it's the most simple recipe average -- three I've been with some tomatoes and onions and I don't know I was thinking I can't feedback good and it was amazing this is so easy and to strengthen -- of America. Yet to colonel I think where we're all used to eating that all these -- have been so you know treated with with salt and then kind of dead in our -- a little bit that when we get back to Justine some of the basic food and -- like oh these are real good just by themselves. Yeah and we try to make all of her recipes -- healthy well they all have a file is being mentioned fog so they'll have. 600 milligrams -- lack of sodium loans and 35% or less than Islam. -- but we also make sure that the only have a few ingredients they're easy to make a reasonable time CNET getting married now for -- hours cooking something. I haven't really try really hard to make our recipes. Really accessible. Yes and and I'm in a position where I get off work between 6:30 and 7 o'clock but the timing at home screen 7730. And you know if mr. Cooke and right then. You know my -- only -- nine. -- -- -- -- bean -- and you know it took me like. The five minutes but the Camden. And can being -- tomatoes and -- -- and I made some mom. Keep -- stuff with Perez and a little bit achieved on the side and the military in. I think like Tony Tony prominent. Love us and -- it. I have -- that they can -- love -- kind of food that's. Well I think another cool thing with having some of these simpler recipes that don't have to quite as many steps is actually could. Involving kids. Let my kids really enjoy and they loved -- -- we make spaghetti MA spaghetti suspect it will stand up on the chair and help them stern all that's up. So this sounds like a great idea of like you will hear some very simple ingredients they do you know they're learning their numbers or letters they can help reduce the recipes that can help count out what they need. And then help make it. That -- yet but we really try to promote that we can figure a monthly rate now. For the last year we have a section on what kids can do in the kitchen. And so you can look back on those species as well but we really try to promote kids getting indications -- that we don't. Have a generation of kids you can't -- a lot of us. Notice home McEnroe no longer and it's it's I'm learning how to -- and maybe the parents don't have time to cut down. At that YouTube. Yeah united I think it goes on the last generations to get home match in high school -- even then we treated like you jokers like or are ditching class whatever this is a and allies like -- really wish I had been mentioned. At this moment. In this school you know we are in school Obama every day with our program metal out of the -- don't even have those kitchen that we can use. -- -- -- not even in the school letting Mark Phillips so important to get tickets Kenya are recipes I mean even if -- -- simple like letting them throws some veggies than a fallible or something in that seat that the first step it's so important. You know we we've made a point in my house of my kids to not have the ninety minute something we're excited about like hope you know the wants a blue moon we don't get stakes are sometimes or wherever else. That we don't make them into a big deal for our kids like boot tonight stake terribly excited because that's that's kind of like I had real good your food issues -- -- Doug super large -- -- anything but it. I have had no problems with with the type of things -- -- because I do associate them with a good time rather than just. Putting nutrition in my body. So I get excited about a woman I have this in this great giant plate of salty goodness. And that is -- remain. So we we've been really trying to look like how owed to our kids think about food going forward their life and and -- we want them to enjoy food certainly but not. Not really fetish as soon I guess this kind of thing dad because instant -- Denny in my may have had their issues with that fits this. Does getting MM bottoming you're doing great with that and you know negotiate Sergio and menu planning that only when when they're so you don't let them pick out of fruit -- in the store or. Let them pick -- a recipe. Could be as simple as that. Yeah yeah very good very gets up. How how is the website bending going to how many hits he is getting a look all that stuff. Wolf are most of them because with social marketing campaign we have specific times of the year only really push and promote -- let's say so. And order campaign and so we're getting about 22000. Hits a month as well so he it's really growing and we're have a very targeted campaign and so we don't promote -- how much just -- iron to certain specific channel where we're trying to find our target audience. And those pretty exciting minutes and that many had. Well that's very very cool salute them the message is getting out there. Yet my fishing areas do we know we did also hear from -- not only did they wanna learn about it could get online but they're currently learning a lot about recipes and cooking tips from their friends and family. And so well -- social media platform has been really a popular way people and connecting. I didn't unfit parent dot org especially FaceBook in an address so I think our photos maybe I'm expecting people. It's nice LAF photos of -- seem to be fairly popular on the Internet. Yet people are hearing them like crazy and and keep the good well we have a great community talking about it. Recipes so that's been another interesting. -- way to learn about healthy eating I guess. Sure -- we've heard some viewer of your recipes the what are the ones that get the most hits. Oh look so if you want says he would has not -- he can I go on homepage voted to let everyone know we do have seen every single month. There's a little back. On the home page it says what last month the Iraqi People -- hello I fired as the chicken broccoli and she's skillet meal. Has been such a popular. Recipe I think he has eighteen or 191000. As they call them pinned on contract. And the chicken and dumplings casserole is the other one that continues to be. Getting tons of hit. Who doesn't love chicken and dumplings. Well any other thing it's interesting as chicken. So would take any would have noted earlier most popular ingredient I think -- consistently we have left the chicken recipes coming up as as those with a -- it. Yeah that was one of the big things we did Lou -- and made this kind of shift as my wife and I had her forties and -- just kind of shift -- healthier. It was going to a whole lot of chicken so we certainly love to hear about all the different chicken dishes. -- elected again to -- also have a lot of their recipes where am. You know they don't have -- they have like the beam villain kills this well which about the greatly fear budget to stretch your food dollar. Miss some make. You time. -- -- -- them up and like Nino back and Atlanta -- other way to get your protein I'm afraid this conversation is over access to the Atlanta. All right argument shots and you come with recommendations. It is. Oh man we got to go out. And I see here another popular one is the the -- -- particles. Yet no one knew -- and another on the list reflects so you know this early or again yeah. Be making a -- obstacles they really popular and that tuna casserole. Nobody tuna -- she develop so we're talking about things when you're getting -- any -- at a time. Felt there really quick one -- Very very cool yell very quick all very easy and not all that expensive so definitely worth checking out food hero dot org -- especially for got a a failure trend hit a budget.
