You're listening to microscope a series of interviews of people of interest to northwest Oregon and southwest Washington I'm Gary blocks of the Saint Paul rodeo gets under way this week it runs Tuesday through Saturday. And cowboys are pretty tough but they do get injured on the job and that's where the Justin cowboy crisis fund comes in. Today unmet Crisco for sticking with Cindy -- and hold Cindy is the director of industry outreach for the professional rodeo cowboys association. Cancers of the program manager for the just in public crisis -- highs in the orient. I'm very great -- doing very well thanks so it's it's just about the fourth of July and that means the Saint Paul rodeo gets under way this week. Absolutely sure that then well it's what we call cowboy Christmas then the rodeo world the only rodeo across the country yes. -- -- -- -- -- -- Well I did a great time for rodeo and saint -- one of the best one of our million dollar tour rodeos within the professional rodeo cowboys association and everybody that comes whatever it was gonna do the best of the best competing with the best livestock here as. This in the 79 annual Saint Paul rodeo listens been gone for awhile. Yeah add in a lot of our rodeos that tradition. Of the community involvement and generally that's how they started that the community celebration and armor and I got together about 79 years ago and and now they have one of the largest radio in the country over the fourth of July and fireworks -- -- something for everybody in the family so that there's a great community tradition and a great place thank all. What can we expect to see the symbol -- this year. Well as in all of our appear these banks are ready -- you'll see all the standard event but I'm events but I don't burping and here are playing and barrel racing for the women and obviously there's going to be a lot of ball writing and pare back Redding and Al propriety. They also have a great carnival there are lots of good food of course. And for the nighttime performances ballots have really amazing fireworks so that's a great place just in your fourth of July fireworks six. -- it's the enjoy fireworks every niners just on the fourth of July. They have them every night of the rodeo when it's nighttime -- absolutely. Yeah that's fantastic. We were so you have a little bit rodeo experience your past. Human. Absolutely. I'm I'm mr. Imus riding horses but has now worked into the professional rodeo cowboys association. I end up traveling all the time working class. The not a bad job. Traveling around to rodeos then fundraisers for the just think Catholic crisis are -- And meeting great people. Especially out in the northwest where you guys have some really great areas like saint pollen. So I -- -- competing a little bit but -- it's. More are stable money how to -- Cut cut cut cut cut cut -- yeah a little bit more something you can rely on. So you don't let me briefly hinted at the just in public crisis when you can you tell some of that. Absolutely -- -- already -- came to me about four years ago and wanted to raise money for the Justin Catholic crisis one which is that. Under which is the I want C three nonprofit. That is brand out of the offices of the professional rodeo cowboys association in Colorado Springs. And what we do that we have injured rodeo athletes that apply for assistance and we provide need based financial assistance. To those cowboys while they're out injured as we know and rodeo or not. Some if you're gonna get hurt its plan and how bad. So when these guys are -- like NBA guys they're they're not getting paid and what they're competing. So we try to help them with their living expenses. While they're injured -- not able to compete. So clearly fantastic organization because that together you're gonna get hurt. Then -- scenario. And it doesn't matter whether it's the time it and further. You know the more -- bull riding or the -- back writing which can be really hard on the a person's body with that you know dated eight. Jerking -- that type of thing. It it is a dangerous sport but they are athlete safety trainer there. In really good shape and that helps them. I keep from getting injured add that the Japanese sports medicine program which also being at Saint -- that kind of teamed up with the Japanese public crisis -- -- He cowboy -- -- And I can down and take them up and have doctors on site and all that type of -- that the Japanese it company is very committed to. That helped rodeo athletes. So what is so unique about JC CF. Well the main thing that's the most unique about it is a 100% of the donations go right into our front that helped send your birdie -- -- None of the -- administrative costs to come out of donations which does. Very unique for a charity and that is because of the commitment adjustment as they pay all of the administrative costs. He then appeared PH came up with them throughout allow apps to run it out of pure chaos says then. That's -- -- thanks so it's very unique yen since 1989 it's been that way. No donations have gone for any type of expenses for the. We're the most donations come from. The donations come from a lot of different places the rodeo community is very generous. We have a lot of fundraisers across the country rodeo committees like Saint Paul choose to give back to athletes that can put on the shelf for them. We have a lot of memorial donations we have foundations that give -- grants. Our largest fundraisers and while they get those you can imagine at the Wrangler national finals rodeo we have a. Are already illegal women's fashion show which is the rodeo community coming together. And they've raised over one point three millionaire in the past 26 years ago. Yeah I did a great run in the fact that we don't spend money to may make money because the rodeo community. Comes together just a different hall where they've designated. July 2 on Wednesday as beyond the -- -- and they'll be a lot of different fundraising events going on Matt Light test. Raise money for the Justin cowboy crisis on. Which can you tell us how to help in the monies raised it to be on the boots thunderous round Wednesday. Absolutely they will get one dollar for every ticket for everybody that comes. And then also have one of the front 5050 drying where. You can buy a ticket for a dollar and all the money goes into a pot and they give away half the money. So it's not as they're drawing for anything about half of the money and then half the money got the correct on. And they also have what we call the tact group believe there at Saint Paul it is when that voted one of the top twenty cowboy bars in the country such you're over 21 and you do that the front -- ago and they have celebrity bartenders then there. I'm not sure directly everybody -- be there this year -- -- -- Amy -- have been -- had passed since the radio personality. And all the tips from there. Go to the crisis on the weekend locked up front giveaways for them just get out their patrons in the -- -- That's fantastic do they donate their tips just just from that night correct. I'm not sure I think they don't I -- through the whole time and from what I've asked for -- from what I understand the whole time. Further rodeo so it's. It was significant donation is all of the money raised at that it was over 151000 dollars last year so lived. So it's a really great. Waiver. The rodeo community to give back and it's a lot of trying to. We have two big when you're having a beer. I thought that the move beyond the roots fund raiser is Wednesday need to get tickets at Saint Paul rodeo dot com correct. Absolutely and already -- dot com or bared their phone numbers. 1800 to 2375920. -- so. I'm looking at Saint -- rodeo dot com right now it looks like timber Joey won that the you know 5050 raffle last year. Yes he'd dead he's got over fourteen heard all of I think. But but that's great -- we're doing is good guy's been around town for awhile. -- -- so how many -- -- rodeo athletes who have been helped by the fund. Well thirty years but back then we started in 1989 and actually got our 501 C three nonprofit status in nineteen in 1991. Which helped over a thousand injured birdie -- athletes and we are coming up on seven million dollars -- Assistance. To those athletes and bat and that this comes and that they could be injured going to a -- rodeo or injured during practice or at the actual rodeo. And it's not just contestants we've had. You know the pick up -- that helped the cowboys they've been injured at the rodeo clowns and they get injured but all fighters. Any number anybody that makes their living in order rodeo is is eligible to apply them and see if they qualify for assists. What sort of assistance is is given by the just in public crisis fund. It differs from case to case and -- in May be just a lump sum payment can help that person they may be out a couple of months. Or if it's. Person with a family that you know doesn't have another career. And make their living in -- would be a monthly assistance site and which would. Cover all of their monthly bills rent car payments insurance follow that type of thing that. That -- it's -- really fantastic organization. Well anyway if it came -- the like I said in the late eighties when agents shoulder and realize that. And he's you know one of the greatest tabloid -- that there were a lot of cowboy that were injured and could never come back to the sports because. You know they used up all their savings -- everything they had to pay their bills while they were injured -- Mario. So he worked together with John -- and and the mother executive at the Justin boots to come up with those and it has been going strong and you know I'm privileged to be able to work with. Nolan Ryan you on the border Charlie Daniels is on the boardwalk -- and working board members that support what we do as long as well as. You know the commissioner of the PRC and we actually have the women's professional rodeo association involved also and we have to help. Helped women that have been injured so it is a great organization and it's a lot of contact go around to places like Saint Paul and visit with people want to support us. -- seems very important because the link you said earlier when cowboys are right and they're not making any money. Yeah I and that and unlike. You know other sports where they might get a salary to actually expand creepy you know a truly can't -- show up and get on that that they entered speak so. It was important for the sport of rodeo to do something to help their loans. And that's what people like about cowboys -- their independence spirits. And a lot of times it's very difficult for cowboys staff for help. But. They understand that that's why people get to the pundits. To give them what we call a hand up not a hand out. The Saint Paul rodeo gets under way this coming Tuesday runs through Saturday it's that it's a fourth of July tradition in saint Paul's really fantastic. And have the same bull rodeo get involved with the Justin -- Christmas Fund. Well I just got a call from Cindy met there and Saint Paul and her son had -- out in the past stand and been injured so she understood. The importance of the fun. And everybody in Mac community really rallied around and and the committee that absolutely. We want to support our cowboys. And to -- we got involved and she's the one that really had that followed this. I'm fundraising end. They also didn't how to get away at their trail ride that was a little while ago. Trying for the crisis -- to help raise money. So that's kind of how it started and it just continued to grow and that the whole community has. Gotten behind the cowboys fan -- crisis -- Says the only rodeo in the state of Oregon that says that's involved. I don't actually and Pendleton Oregon they have a golf tournament and they have had for many many years McAvoy memorial golf tournament. Back. Raise the money for the Justin -- crisis armed and that's the Monday before Pendleton. And just recently it mr. gore again right at the road at bay. Had a bowl dodging what they called Bulldog and shoot out last. Bold order name Alex Robert then had been injured and we help him and he had been putting on the ball blogging fund raiser. For a few years. And after we helped him he decided to turn it into a fund raiser for the crisis and and the testers rodeo committee allowed him to have at their arena east haven't had it out but he -- So he lived it and at this are very arena. And output hundreds of what I disarmed so we have you know quite a few fund raisers for with birdie there and organic good place to support traveling. That's great so it's kind of statewide like to see that absolutely absolutely. Can you tell us more about some of the events that are happening at the Saint Paul rodeo this week. Well I start off with. Hall of fame barbecued and that's on our Monday July 30 what you. Tomorrow and everybody can come the end preview of dark shadow and. See some folks that have contributed a lot to. The Saint -- rodeo get inducted into their hall of fame and have a good barbecue dinner and then the next night following that they have professional -- -- College nights. And college students get a discount then everybody can come people writing and the carnival opened on Monday also. And then. Tuesday it and the Wednesday of course dissect into guard beyond -- big night and then third -- -- That's still a third party they have -- rodeo it's 730 and then onsite support they have. Two performance that is why he for the family at 130. And then adding a nighttime performance and then at all I'm wraps up bombs. Saturday July 6 at 7:30 PM so and -- fireworks and all that I've been saying we're not they have a whole schedule unless they have everything that's going on. They're the patriot night there's the college nice family days I'll kinda different ticket specials and -- on they've already got a dot com. There's something for everybody this is the big event. It is the really big event and it's it's really fun for the first time someone -- and make the like. There's one flashing light in this town and then they fill up the stands and their people from all over any. The whole community gets behind the event and -- -- that's certainly hasn't put pressure hurt their travelers association make. Community should be very proud of of what they've been able to do. -- he pulls another very Big Ten. Knew it not so I thought let's -- but that -- how many people -- the details of that. Wow you got that somebody on the rice is there I'm not sure that I can't hit it about 101008 so run. They made it pretty -- you're getting -- from all across your part of the country to come out there to -- And the same ball rodeo opens this Tuesday runs through Saturday that's it's too -- really fantastic event. Absolutely Front Royal family. And let's talk more about the -- on the boots which is it is Wednesday. How can people help donate money on Wednesday. Well they can come and they can buy a raffle ticket -- 5050 crying or they can go on the attacker and saloon and they're 21 and over him and tip the bartender there. And just by buying a ticket you're helping because of that committee generously give that dollar for every checked yet. And I would encourage them to kind of look. Around and he did just that sports medicine team trailer there also -- and that's another heart as. I'm while they're not raising money for that that they've already wanted to raise awareness of the Japanese sports medicine program and how important that is Betty. People concede that trailer and kind of take a look inside. And and see what's going on with the Japanese sports dynasty team and how they help keep our rodeo athletes. Healthy especially in the fourth of July -- some of them walk out past eight to ten rodeo. Through that we can. They'll be pretty sore he needs some icy -- and -- attacked the bank and the trainers beliefs and positions will be there are ready to help as he hit. -- they kind of like EMTs on site. Say they have PNC's regular reality is that professional rodeo cowboys association requires that and then not see him keep -- there. And this team. Goes above and beyond that they work in conjunction with GMT. But they have. Sports medicine trainer that I understand injury -- rodeo ever computer system in there that track all the cowboys that commands. They know what has happened to them in the past. They have their medical records. And they'll have volunteered. You know in the box there that then orthopedic surgeons then sport that the trainers from the area that will come and help. And make sure the cowboys ever everything they need so it. It's a really unique program to the border rodeo because our guys you know there are going to be at home to see their doctor. And this is the place they go to. Get the health care they need and it they need to be referred obviously but. It. Helped get them a place to go most of -- not -- Murray. Sounds very unique and any mention volunteers other other volunteer opportunities for the Saint -- rodeo. Absolutely I would encourage anybody that wants to get involved to get on the web site you know would be awake to contact the -- a committee because that's the backbone. A professor rodeo on the United States stands unlike other sports almost all of our rodeo committees that put on our 600 birdie goes. Across the country are volunteers and raise money for charity. And Saint Paul not only raises money for the crisis fund and other local charities. As do most of our where he has I think we have about 26 million that's great cost the country -- -- -- And it's all done because people want to get involved in the community. And let's be honest everybody wants be a cowboy right. That's what -- put the. I'm be a part of the community events raise money for a good cause and. And and be around cowboys and the cowboy spirit. How important our fundraisers such as those occurring in Saint Paul this week. Well. Crisis fund could not continue as we do we wouldn't be able to give out. And it buried 30400000. A year -- we wouldn't be able to give -- the money we never had to turn away any. -- -- -- Because of the lack of science and without communities like Saint Paul we may have to. Spend some of our money raising money but at -- it is. No money goes towards fundraising in -- but has. Communities like Saint Paul and others like San Antonio on Pendleton and I you know all across the country. So it's. Very important and you know we'd like to end the rodeo industry take care of our own and that and that's what they've done -- all. Looks like some celebrities have gotten involved in the past to look at the website in the reserves and Qatar from George Strait ruffled off. And a fiddle from Charlie Daniels those ruffled -- there any big being raffles this year. I am absolutely George has been a big fan of the doesn't have a crisis front and he's adept and did -- Dorsey. So any time you buy a pair of George Strait just been bits. A portion of those proceeds every year come at a crisis started and he has. He has given. Items in the past. Do. Raffle off. In Saint Paul they they changed over -- just doing a 5050 trying to catch everybody balked at such a but and Charlie Daniels actually served on a curb our board of directors did you vote on cases that he's always donating items are. Auctions across the country he's a very active board member as is -- on -- and they are. All they've been there since the beginning. And they come to meetings they've brought on cases then it's it's great to have its. Celebrity endorsers like that that are really great down to earth people and really care about the cowboys and our business. Absolutely how does the 5050 raffle work. You -- you buy a ticket for a dollar or you can buy more obviously. And they've -- all the money in a spot in half of the money goes for the justice -- right a -- on a name and half the money goes to the winner. So is it. Is -- money that's raised throughout the whole Saint Paul rodeo time or is it just for one thing to. Just the one night to the element that the one night sit down there at -- on Wednesday. That's great. -- is disagree with you raise money but he likes to get is a great way to raise money and yet some people and I want you know ticket to an event -- sign -- hope but. Everybody can you able to capture right. -- -- -- -- -- How did the just in public crisis when it started. Well you know as -- -- it was quite a few years ago when and Jim's shoulders who has passed away recently but he was. A world champion cavalier realized that you know there was really a problem with rodeo athletes. Not being able to get back to -- after they were injured but has they had use up all their savings and sell everything you. To pay for their bills while they were out so he got together with John Justin who's really hit a great supporter of cowboys and but just who that company has been even as -- -- and I'm -- -- -- And they decided that. We needed a and then they work. With a professional rodeo cowboys association and the women's professional rodeo association. To formally create a 501 C three nonprofit. That takes all of the donations are coming in and get that act as. -- cowboys and cowgirls and they have to qualify they have just a lot of four page application and we have to get additional information that. So that's how they were injured. And they have stated so you know that they do need some assistance with their living expenses. And then all of that goes to the board and they. And they vote on how much assistance would give each. Each person and that's been as -- -- over a thousand cowboys and cowgirls we've helped since the inception of the fun. They're very important organization. Absolutely we. Are very grateful for all the rodeo fans. And various committees like Saint Paul that support it and very thankful that we're able to help our own and keep our -- financially healthy hospital. And a good way for our listeners to help out with he just in -- crisis fund is the beyond the roots fund raiser tonight which is Wednesday at the -- Paul rodeo. Absolutely they can also go to www. Justin. -- crisis fund dot org and donated stated they are unable to make it -- birdie no orders read a little bit more about our fan how it started. -- some of the cowboys that we helped the most Woodson.
