You're listening to microscope a series of interviews with people of interest in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington monetary -- and in this next weekend is the 31 annual bio Oregon is August 8 through the tenth at waterfront park in downtown Portland. And the vital -- is a benefit for special Victoria today on -- scope would like to welcome Franklin LD he's the marketing manager for the vital organ. And timber extra chief development officer was Special Olympics Oregon hi guys on the go and are you doing great thanks so the -- is a coming up this next week in busy time for you guys. Yes were -- the homestretch here preparations and we're very excited the 31 annual by the word. And it's happening and more from park as usual. Yes sir August 8 through tenth but I waterfront park crates down there in downtown Portland. What can people expect in the come to -- this. Well we're expecting it to be bigger better than ever. We've expanded our -- stable which is our most exciting. Fetched for me this year I've partnered with all of the organ agricultural commission. And the usual entertainment -- beer lying and now all the other great things about in outside the end organ summer waterfront park. This has been that thing -- otherwise one of the best Summers we've had no one also the -- hopefully the weather hold for next week and I think it will. Yeah we we have extra pick that weekend that. Is. The most likely to not brand that we saw that it didn't really work or some troops in July so remember -- -- -- the -- the so drink or use -- -- you cook. I have not but I work with a lot of -- scenario instead that created so I I. I've met in which could live home but not professionally. And the right to set up as this as a fund raiser in support for the Special Olympics organs are correct. So can you tell us a little bit about Special Olympics organ and held their overall connected with a -- Absolutely Special Olympics or -- can serve the largest disability population in the state to protect individuals with intellectual disability is affecting one in the fight organ family. We currently served 121000 participants but there's approximately 100000. Other individuals -- -- -- could benefit from our services. So we hosted many different events at fundraisers with the bite of organ being one of them so funds from the bite go to help support our program to. Because none of our participants have to pay to be involved in Special Olympics organs of your round programming. Let's some really great it's -- what a what a nice tie and. Absolutely. It's a lot of -- that helped us spread awareness of our mission as well as raise money. What are some of the benefits a -- participating in the Special Olympics. For for some of your -- the people you serve. It there's 20000. Benefits for people who participate. For all of us who got to -- sports or be a part of that group when we were growing up. We understand the importance of what that means you learn rules and regulations. You have people that depend upon you and you have to learn to depend upon other people. It -- confidence. It's motivating and the Special Olympics brings both opportunity to individuals who might not be included in mainstream. School or -- opportunity if they are able to learn all of those same things. And oftentimes. They might be included in high school but their friends will go off. Get jobs go to college. And for them. A lot of those people overweight and they lose those friends that they happened -- through Special Olympics they're able to. Engaged more with their peer group and developed friendships that -- from throughout their lives. I would imagine very lifelong friendships absolutely. -- -- with the -- -- dusting sports seasons we just have these summer Olympic Games was I correct in Newburgh. That is correct over the summer games which had over 2200 delegates from across the state that came together to participate in track and field. Across -- -- -- and gulf. So that was a lot of fun and we think are big supporters Ajax or. Bringing the games to Newburgh that we can have those opportunities. And it very shortly here will be moving into our fall sports season it's. And fall off heard that the volleyball aquatic bullying. And -- occur and we're very excited to announce stats this year is to return a powerful state games. Thanks to the timber and Providence and these teams will be held at Providence park. It's a really exciting opportunity for athletes to be able to play on the same page that the -- from the current scale. So that's exciting -- very much. So how does the -- to help support Special Olympics organ. Again the funds that come through this all go in directly into our programming note tickets available for people purchasing food it's. -- craft beer and wine and all of the proceeds from that go directly into our program. So get that support those regional and statewide competition opportunities that we offer throughout the year. So are -- volunteer opportunities with the white or with special -- organ. There are always volunteer opportunities that we're still looking for volunteers for the bite of origin as well see you could go onto the web site you can go on Q. Special pick -- and let's -- which is it. -- OR dot org and click on volunteers and sign up for -- for the -- of or against there's lots of different things you can do. You can work up to -- you can help serve -- -- you can do you think stating maritime things. And then as far as volunteering for Special Olympics or again we're always looking for volunteers. We have 8000 people year around the volunteer Q. Helped bring all of this programming to use these thousands of individuals. And anyone can sign up to do something that is. A daily event for example you could do score keeping -- bought cheap. Or if you really love sports fan and want to take on coaching -- volunteer opportunities -- but still available as well. And there's opportunities throughout the state is that correct. Absolutely 100% or in thirty different counties across the state both with the local programs so everybody can compete in their own community. So they're always different thing that they -- for. -- we're always looking for people with medical background. People who can help with local fundraising. Or just helped you run the team and make sure everything goes very swiftly. Some frank let me ask you the other theme for this year for the vital -- is organs bounty could -- about the -- where that came from. That really came from are our. Partnership with the U or -- cultural conditions so this year works we expanded inside look featuring commissions including. -- Blackberry raspberry. Blueberries potatoes secret organ. Organ beef council organ Gary commission. Oregon charity and northwest cherries and the idea -- each organ onion growers which quite a mouth hole. And I want to acknowledge all of them because there are fantastic partners and truly -- me that. -- to sensible spirit to our events this year and so we have it would -- -- missions. Are all working with. Eight CLA yes Kurt showed Dorgan and other local feature Shas. Actually represent. I'm all of their. There are products. Are shut table which are true culinary -- -- dollar. A small plate fights that really. -- -- -- on oil but what spirit and organ Melky. And the Kurds coming back this year. Well that's popular with regard to back this year -- we've expanded battle calling it car land here and we're barely stayed out of what is that particular -- -- culture street's big culture I should say. Are bad. About some -- organs Beers and -- Yes one yen were work but we're showcasing all of deep craft beer. Revolutionize that -- -- Portland and ignored him and will they've really really nice selection that organ -- -- from around the state term all of you eat should -- -- And we're really saying about that as well. How can people get tickets can get tickets in advance or do you just -- mitigate. We also you know we are selling advance tickets. You can go by -- -- dot com. -- result and find out institute think volunteer opportunities. -- all the little further too much instead and and heard -- a ticket buyer or the dot com we also have some really cool -- -- -- that he -- -- -- -- we've got a big night package that gets you couple. Two -- from the chest able to line and so -- screening and we all the family pack. And mother packages their third grade and their that seem to be really popular we introduced that last year I feel again what we call Boehner I and that is a way as. Really interacting with our -- our fans and teacher and that's the instead you can only. Get. Bonus -- privileges if you buy an advanced secure -- ticket package. He'd buy tickets you opting into our opponent by Ferdinand and then will be spending plan. Contact Matthew do you want onsite cheered go get -- streets -- -- community stayed secret word or you can meet its celebrity chef or you can. I get something really ugly really nice -- like worthless now -- giving away eight tailgate it's the orange ducks -- state game this year which were really excited about I think it'd be a big hit so there's all sorts of really sonic saying things did do you want here -- our. They're that's fair -- there and now we've been taken it to one step further what the voters -- And that I see here that it's free admission for anybody who's participating in the province -- -- Yes. Started last year and bridge can all happen thoughts on day. And we are sending reentry all the participants and vote -- what is really wanted to opponents. Equally exciting events and slightly silly green and our culture yourself. But I we partnered up with the -- bridge fell and you finish your bike prior -- all the bridges. And comes kiosk sort of buy it and enjoy all the -- sound -- that we have to offer. -- about the -- of organ which is coming of this coming week in August -- through the tenth the waterfront park in downtown Portland. And the vital organ is support. Fund raiser for Special Olympics organ he converts from with Special Olympics. Wondered what does it cost to participate in Special Olympics. It doesn't cost anything for any of the participants and their families. And so they get to participate in the sports training and competition tricked out a year in fourteen different Olympic title compiled important. And we also offer medical screenings for all of our participants so if they can't afford to go to a doctor and get a physical we provide that for them. Including its eyes and ears. -- -- I'm healthy year eating habits enhanced protection from the elements of their outlook fun it's. And all of that is done at no charge also by professional help people. And that all costs money -- as a funding come from. We are very very fortunate that we have a great support throughout this state we found a wonderful partners of such as -- -- -- -- -- planner I talked a little about about the key members of the foreign to Providence we also have the trailblazers. And a lot of those sponsors helped to put on all of these sports competitions that we have throughout the course of the year. And an individual was well donations make up the bulk of our money and -- people who just decide that they want again. You know anywhere from one dollar Q whatever they can afford and every every dollar that comes and helps -- to support that mission. It cost approximately a 150 dollars per athlete purse sports defense. So every dollar that we get frustrated that programming and really help us to make sure we're putting on quality experiences for these individuals. And with three distinct sports seasons that's that money ends up pretty quickly. It definitely does -- and getting the opportunities for Oregon and across the state is what takes up the majority of those cost. I only wanna make sure everyone has to equal access -- and so when you get into some of those further areas outside of the metro. It becomes a lot more costly for those athletes to participate there's a lot more travel. A lot more lodging. And in some instances it more difficult for those local programs to be able to have access to facilities. And so we are working to offer all of those costs to make sure again that we provide quality experiences and everyone who wants to participate doesn't have that opportunity. And you're telling us earlier that one in five Oregon families is touched by an intellectual disability. Absolutely so if you look around your neighborhood there's going to be family as to how somebody who it doesn't have an intellectual disability and it's again it'd affect affect salient fact I believe that that family is able to. Participate in the thing but again the rest of us might have taken for granted when we were growing up and so we're very happy to be able to provide. As resource is not only for the individual but those three sources for the family members so they feel like that they've got all of the tools that they need to. The winter sport season where -- those of you will those. Where those defense held. We have our winter outdoor season which is in bad mount bachelor is the location at four. Downhill skiing cross country skiing snowboarding it's -- -- And then we also have our winter indoor games which are also being reinstated disappear. Those will be in March in Corvallis and that is basketball and how realistic. Ha. Special Olympics organ offers year round sports training to -- them salute -- besides the distinct sport seasons it's it's kind of all the time. It is absolutely people are always a few minutes. Like the Olympic athlete or every four years or maybe they just think that it's it's one big cities banner that we just do worst summer games. They don't realize that there are three sport seasons and the training really does happen year round. And so again if it's if it's not necessarily sports training and there are all of speed. Health and wellness opportunities that we offer. And we're very excited to be launching or didn't he moments which is Blake -- sports training. It's eight we could nutrition and fitness for our participants. And so they get to learn at home exercises that they don't need any equipment for that are safe for them to do. And the -- to get to participate in their own nutritional programming. So they'll learn about healthy choices. Maybe making some changes -- -- once per week removed. -- you've been replaced with fruit or something like that. And again giving them the opportunity to learn more about nutrition and what it means for their health. And we're very excited to be watching that as a new program as well. How the general public help out with things like -- be coaching or can we get involved and and in some -- Absolutely we would love for everybody to come out and participate in our game. Again if you four hours to spare you could certainly help out the day of competition. By age -- -- score keeping or helping to setup. And again that's what it's -- smaller time commitments or if you want to coach -- being assistant coach. You can certainly do that as well and all of that information that our web site it's on its. Ford dot org so that is -- OOR dot org and at the top of the page OK a couple of different ways he can get involved including donating and volunteering. And one great way to get involved does display attending the byte which is -- this week in that water from park the 31 annual vital organ. -- and only what is some some of the new stuff we can expect to -- this year. Well. -- you're bringing back the boy out of band quarter flash this year oh yeah that's pretty exciting mates lots of people all scored Iranians who recognize quarter slash as one of the big pop. A band would be eighty so we're really say about that well they say -- about -- mused out a partnership with the -- each one collected at the really exciting urban why -- over in southeast Portland is going to be screening their urban wiry experience. I sued by. And intimate and special wives specifically for the by -- and set -- the southeast wind collective Juan Barrera are that. And like I mentioned the organ agricultural commission the next -- ask him also I think one of the other things that need that much much also is. I think people are gonna find there are footprints a little different this year we coyotes. Reorganize the way he owed to lay out wire from our. Back to make it a little bit more acceptable and out there -- traffic control those heaps of people kind of becoming going up and down the north and to the south that. I don't think you were really see a new by your mortgage for 31 year. You're expecting quite a few people to come through the gates. We're expecting 60000 people have retreated. It's a big summertime partied out there since it's always a great time that's -- Absolutely we're we're really say. All of our our friend back into the bathroom Special Olympics or. How much -- the iron meet soldiers we're really doing. Oh yes iron resolve this would introduce last year. Has an extension of the Iron Chef or in competition which is -- -- a big one of the most. Highly outside actors speak to her for her or shut stage schedule also higher -- solid hit. Bartender vs bartender where is that ingredient that their that they're not known to them or they get up onstage and they have come up with eight true craft cartel that. Is basically -- unknown ingredients. It's it's again another really uniquely Portland saying he just -- cartel and and bartenders. Are are. -- really kind of emerging here and as an extension of shots in Portland so -- we -- that will be a very very exciting. A competition and one that I personally will not let. Maybe you can drop some names for us this sounds like there's gonna be about eleven restaurants there were one of the restaurants involved. We had a -- and ribs their back which here they are. Been -- -- for a long time one of the most popular. Restaurants you have we have him do -- not be -- create time I -- why don't you do your pocket. -- -- -- European -- Now Angel stopped and another real popular. One of my spirits of our restaurants. You weren't trickery. Nicholas that is Russia over round it out in Portland that has been around so long time answers needing -- -- Middle Eastern couldn't. He certainly didn't -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Rebels. You coincidence and that's another delicious. He cleared and then of course road gal and that that's -- just it's a sample of our restaurants through 2014. So it's only do a little something for everyone. There is a little something for everyone you didn't come through the restaurant row and then over shots cable and hopefully. Knock it seemed all too quickly we always encourage everywhere that it would take small -- But the -- spread it out again enjoy at all the Chara started yet we like. What the but the so let's remind everybody again how he can get tickets and how to get in the number everything about the -- Well you can get a buyer organ dot com and urges advanced tickets not get to the bone the play centers. And then it's August 8 ninth and turned down our -- -- We also. They like sent special Friday cheaper one century its -- why this. Come over from working on get some lunch. And but we do encourage -- -- ticket purchase. You can get all the bonus by privileges. Yes -- the kind of an exclusive club like that. Yeah I think it's getting more popular are we seeing a lot of and hired -- itself this year which is very excited. And the -- Oregon is a benefit for Special Olympics organ Kim are you excited for the for the -- Oh absolutely. Absolutely it's it's a really fun time. It is again I greatly -- supports special Pixar again and it really helped us get the awareness of our mission out there. And so we'd love how adamant about books. What is on your favorite things to do with the -- Well Ichiro the development. Staff full well all of us to do the fundraising we work account I have to be one Glasgow and he can come down and purchased -- -- -- commemorative wine glass. And all of that money benefits Special Olympics organic solids let's find actually be down there beyond played be working to see all the people get to interact with everybody had a great time. And frank was on your favorite things about the -- I'm Liberia thing is that I imagine this just give all I I have the chance and -- there at. They can stranded all that -- so that they keep sliding anymore plates. Glad that you might sustenance Gary brought on working. For the weekend but. I mean surely I loved -- then I thought except that they're really get a little bit of a true everywhere -- you know even families with children there's that kid area since it is the -- stage with all of the demonstrations. I also mentioned that we had the liberty shot you know Louis this year from linkin restaurants uncharted tavern. We got quarter last curfew through the old school music -- in Portland and it's just that they had happier than her really did cause. Special Olympics organ that such amazing work our community and we are so proud that could turn out that I've been bought a it's. On greater.
