This is metro scope and Entercom radio public affairs program for the Portland metro area. My -- -- Watson and on this episode of microscope. We're going to be learning how you can become a better cook. And help out the Salvation Army at the same time I'd like to welcome major Nancy dealer with the Salvation Army can guide cleansing a -- with the taste of home cooking schools -- fiscal hi there welcome to the show. Good afternoon. So let's first get started with with Nancy with you telling us that maybe a little bit of history about the Salvation Army I think we've all heard the Salvation Army but maybe slow brief history. Well interestingly enough the Salvation Army is getting ready to celebrate -- 350 year. And 2015. We began in London England armed with a man who is a visionary. William Booth and -- don't hurt and the poor and the destitute men and women on the streets of East London. And have a compassionate heart for them and he's started. Under Salvation Army where there would be a place where they can come and be comfortable regardless of whether they. Looked bright -- -- on the right close personnel tried but it was a place where they can come and be. And be who they work. And this Salvation Army continued stop for that service sun streaked across the content around the world even today. Then we say Salvation Army how does how does the army part of the command. Well you know we are acquired by military system. We have soldiers who are members of the Salvation Army we have officers who provide leadership. The soldiers to stay in this city and they provide a local support to the Salvation Army in its activities. And the officers are live from location to location according to their guess. And skilled than according to companies to the Salvation Army. So you couldn't come have an appointment. In Portland today and be in Texas tomorrow or in Hawaii next year. You just don't know -- -- subject in this according to the needs of the Salvation Army. And how long have you been with the Salvation Army. 32 years -- congratulations. Thank you -- I've found I've served in Hawaii and Washington and California and Oregon. Who -- -- -- -- -- it is time that the wonderful play. I think most of our listeners are familiar with the Salvation Army thought family thrift stores and of course the kettles in the bells at Christmas time but the Salvation Army does so much more details about what you guys do. We do with each community has that opportunity and the privilege to base their programs on the needs of that community and still won the community may need. You know shelter for the next community doesn't and so each community have the opportunity to develop that according to their needs. In Portland right now we have athletic programs we have afterschool music and arts programs for kids. There's a domestic violence shelter there's a large drug drug and alcohol treatment program. We have a phenomenal summer camp out and boring -- actually open all year -- that we focused on Maggette inner city kids go to this summer camp. Where that program in north Portland -- -- -- to provide parenting skills and opportunities for. Girls can have to have babies teenage moms to get back on track and they continued school it's. -- dealing with some of the complex issues that they -- -- so there's just a wide variety of different services that the army provides. -- come at the needs change throughout the years. He is what. We have certainly seen an increase in the number of people that are asking for just the basics like food and shelter and supplies. We do a large I'm back to school program for kids because. With certain economies that schools are expecting their kids to provide more of their family to provide more action and the families are hard pressed Stephen to keep. -- kids -- and so we're doing more and more with back to school supplies. And we're doing a lot of afterschool under NAFTA in our programs it's just something to make sure that the kids they're well nourished and are not hungry. If someone is in need of help from the Salvation Army how to they go about getting. All you have to do -- called it Salvation Army closest to you and tell them what they needed and they will make sure that you they can get together right -- -- -- We have Q oppresses them right in Portland won in north Portland -- one and northeast Portland. We have a social service office in Gresham and one in Hillsborough and that's a great place to start. And they can follow you according to the need county where you need tend to go. -- many people in the metro area does the Salvation Army help out. Well in 2013. We provided just under 275000. Meals and snacks and I'm in addition to that and that social service processes about 22000. Food boxes were handed out. We're grateful for the partnership with organic food bank that allows us to provide. Food and many many more people than we would -- be able to do just turnaround. And didn't. Interestingly enough network and who think now it has made a real priority for nutritious food and so. A lot of -- Fruits and vegetables and we're just really seeing and feeling really good about the opportunity to partner together and know that we're getting out really nutritious food. And one way -- listeners can help out in the very near future is by attending the taste of home cooking school. And I'd like to once again re reintroduce guy cleansing he's a show for the taste of home cooking school which is happening October 15. At the Wilson to -- the -- guy how are you. I'm grateful and thrilled to be a part of the show and but you know the Salvation Army this as a poor part of the show while. Now how is that Salvation Army going to benefit from the taste of home cooking school. Well they they're really kind of in the situation where you know people who. Operated a -- of her approach are going to get through the first 200 -- so. Bring some other currencies hurt -- actually you don't. To go -- penalty. For the distribution true solution army are going to get to a preferred seating so we're there rotating for a few of those folks and it looked. You know aren't -- official charity -- sister per we're eight you know let's say it's a potential home cooking schools are just on. So residents in your work going to be presenting recipes so. Our recipes for all the co axial people who cheer for their films provide for the moment in -- -- the system through donations include current. Israelis aren't overly wonderful extension little -- solution -- little organizational. But we're just really can't -- -- There when someone comes to the taste of home cooking school which is October 15 what can they expect. Well it's it's really -- part of -- on its own they'll be allowed in to expose what the senator quote show prior to you don't. And I think those two little girls -- the clock. In the short so Kuznetsova and look and it's a book on. Will be convertible total cooking school that we -- -- open at turtle in your church the -- -- show. In an era but he -- that's coming will receive but he couldn't believe the struggle can't score stop on the tour. There's increased subscription that you want to go to church and church is already seeing untrue offers so superimposed on from the -- that. That is really probably more valuable -- ticket that helped the show. And then. I'll be present its own recipes step by step in herbal water topical trust he's a little to do that's included in the economy. You know war pope's first step -- power prefer those sorts is. A war would surely and so histories so will that approach science Curtis Sumpter some trucks actually a total people's time in the kitchen you'll -- more efficient. They're in the war on because you can total caucus deliveries social currents. Folks come with their friends and neighbors couples multi generation families. Aren't -- and so and so. So that they took Urquhart events especially. On the list that tiny -- facilitation -- like this it's early break her -- Well before we get started with the interview today Nancy asked guy what is your favorite thing to cook -- can you tell us about what's your favorite things cook -- You know probably eight people -- Italian big stick in the Olympic athletes are recipes on stage in her opponent -- -- for racial hopefully -- -- personally. And one you know -- who you know probably my favorites kind of buried at least a tour. Oh there we mixture or recipe to literally -- appetizers entrees stocks. And literally you know him he really kind of partial to these -- the year purple. Or making a soft you're like Burberry external -- -- And we're showing people to limit the so -- -- trust the pro tour. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- After the war that's been your favorite how ridiculous -- actually -- -- you -- yeah. -- I think you need an Oprah and I think that's would be appropriate for us that. -- the taste of home cooking school is coming up at the Wilson bill Holiday Inn on October 15. Tickets are just fifteen dollars and available -- taste of home PDX dot com if you are one of the first 200 people to show with a bag of groceries to donate to the Salvation Army. You get to oh score special -- the first five -- And you watch all the culinary action will be greats and answer what does this mean to have this tie in with the Salvation Army in the taste of home cooking school. What we're at a time of the year where our pantry carrier that flies doesn't it and I'm -- weird. Really feeling the need to have a kind of a reinforcement. This'll give us a great opportunity to again provide a variety of different foods. I'm and we just -- so grateful for the opportunity to partner together and for a public who are so willing given the support for people that don't have as much as they do. So I -- As the best things to come and to bring would be and I canned goods and of any kind of beans can vegetables fruits any of those kind of things. That really provide kids sustenance for people. Rice and bread and produce those are great things to come -- to bring him. Again we're so grateful for that -- opportunity to work together and to be able to it can't provide for people in our community that are really struggling and are really working hard sometimes because it -- make ends meet I just can't make it to the end of the month. It's increasing at the need for food has increased. Significantly. And as you know we went through -- really -- time with the economy just a few years ago and are beginning to see a turnaround. But that change comes slow doesn't that it takes a while to get caught up and it takes a while to get your feedback on the ground. And it what we're seeing is that. He even people who have been able to get them to share in the path to that because that's how difficult it's been in our in our. City. It is that it's it's taken them awhile to get their feet back on the ground and so that people who have been donors in the past are recipients of service now. And so we just you know just have to look at more and more people to provide sound. Out of out of the resource is that they have for a larger community that's hurting and needy. What sort of feeding programs are available through the Salvation Army. There's -- number of different programs we do offer food boxes and then an opportunity for people to choose their own food into the food boxes. We have -- a senior program that provides senior meals that are standing office. Unless there's homeless feeding program and the -- often. And in the -- often they do if -- box distribution and the senior feeding program there as well. Do you care only the ones that are dropped and each we have that Delphi facilities that have clients that are held generic short term and long term. Where there's ongoing need for for food -- domestic violence still church. Again we talked about the parent can program for teams that drug and alcohol treatment program for man. There's of that -- that that provides services to vets and their families where they defeating. -- seven days a week. So there's lots of opportunities to assure that student different programs programs in different ways. But he did mention some nonperishable food items people could bring do you also accept perishable food items like -- RX -- We do we can take milk and dairy products and fresh produce and that's how we can turn it around really quickly and make sure get into the hands of people that need it put. And again one of the best ways brewer may be one of the -- unique ways you can get involved and help out the Salvation Army. -- by attending the taste of home cooking school if you're one of the first 200 people to show open the bag of groceries to donate to the Salvation Army. He -- special seeding in the first five rows and you want tallest all the culinary action from guy. And -- got this really you're gadget guy. What are your -- But you know I I I have so many gadgets and up. Troops on and on and -- actually talked some social launched storms and hope that. It's this and I'm always on an additional optional took her pregnant. Some marketing and shortening Ervin I think I kicked -- waist and on -- and incorporate all. The -- -- compatibility useful channel that. Openly on this Torino -- spiritual -- like he'll. -- special west uncle -- familiar political and it's kind of a cool earth -- that -- special. -- two of the truly great early exit of salt RE. Of course look like only he ripped a triple altitude you virtual border. And another contraction her because -- and chocolate for -- and hopefully you know what you're working the final on -- Here and burn in -- how difficult it is important -- think it'll it'll break up to meet their pedestal so. Her approach you're sharing the local or what it will Simpson church since so many years. Group -- that we you know. And you know this is relates to -- closer to total cooking school in his. This country's largest cooking complications from -- subscribers. We do or 200 cooking schools you're a country. From you console you open 24 states over 200 children think in a political content totaled the people who want to initial boost food. There -- -- great simply do permanent calmer in these recipes culled from home cultural over the country. It's somebody's criminal -- recipe. And at the ignorant and they suddenly -- so we trust her constituents or the obstacles we put that are cookbook so literally it instantly it was sort. Don't specific quotes senator -- it would be alert for. So you know this could certainly special course peace or go to remote we think the goal. Spending time with her family is about sharing experience teaching her orders that are. Looking I don't know for sure. Her foolish human flu. This is cool earth just a forty. You don't agree virtually everything is on a traditional. Organ flute so it's a little overly excited rock and my first trip to bolster legal and illegal. The Portland area. Well we welcome with open arms. Yes we do you know it's a win and when you do come here on October 15 area -- you're gonna kind of focus on a lot of seasonal recipes are correct. You know go the wrong here it's forwards that you know cooking this from Europe and also oracle and commercial order through the vocalist and temporary assorted greens and literature in accordance with bushels we'll just because. In on your own kitchen and -- -- -- music Carolina fits that sometimes. In hooker preparing meals for you know especially for a -- and we won't work. And so who were on trying to -- The -- you know where the wait is that your curled into my kitchen I sure hope so -- -- -- which can't even when you're older you. Or maybe something particular property of their own kitchen and also talk a little Gerber. And we tradition that you know you mentioned they -- that the -- burger or they have a collection -- error -- donation earlier so terrible problem. Parishioners and and I think you'll have a tradition sort -- been in my feeling is an example and I don't know these very spiritual. Tradition of her curse under -- -- certain mules are certain issues. Didn't you know alternative don't corporate parents like her motor particularly. Over the kinds -- -- -- like two sure votes short ball. Well it is really hard to believe that the holidays are just around the corner -- to believe that. And of course the Salvation Army is out there ringing their bells at christmastime and Nancy what else to get to around Christmas. Are we -- -- kind of things that we have an Angel keep tree program we do two plays and the reindeer run. Making sure that every child has at least one or -- -- under the tree. We do provide Christmas food boxes so that each family can have a Christmas on their own end. Then for those that choose to not be a part of a larger group there's Christmas meals that are offered in different locations around town. Lots of exciting things happening in the north Portland office they have a candidate haircuts for kids that they need to be stepped up and don't can't afford to get a haircut. They have hairdressers that volunteer their time in command an offer haircuts. So all kind of fund does that happened that at Christmas just to make the most of the holidays and to and I give people opportunity things that are low low cost but high energy and high fun. Well literally fantastic. The one thing I didn't realize that this is at the Salvation Army has summer camps. -- -- -- ten minutes straight that we have -- we have about in this in this particular camp. About 250 kids a week and then. And are just rolled into a residential camping experience where they. Under the high road course helps them work on self confidence -- I'm Taylor together I'm working together as a cabinet how to be a part of a group that have. You could have killed intercom communicating and being a part of that group. Like -- come to camp that haven't sat down around the table and had a meal together as a family they eat in the living Roman by the computer table. -- teaching. The guilt about eating and table manners all kinds of really positive thing to happen it and it and -- an amazing -- -- for in a kid's life it's summer camp. There's nothing quite like summer camp nothing like it but the -- somebody wants to get involved in the Salvation Army -- do that. The best way to do it -- two on it if they're connected on line is to hit militia army Portland got. Or can -- give -- entry interesting fact about the Salvation Army import lunch. There's a mechanism there for a pure interest in volunteering to get beer information and they'll make contact with GO. Under somebody's got comfortable on the computer great number -- -- out their divisional headquarters and we will gets you to the right places based on where you live out. The numbers of title 327943200. And we still live in and exempt because those faithful volunteers who supported. Because as you know the cost Tenet in the businesses and employees and we want to employ people. But in order tech -- kept the margin we have to do as much as we can look volunteers and to work. So grateful for a generous public for not only gets from their pocket but book they give their time and energy as well. Really great stuff. And again you can support the Salvation Army by attending the taste of home cooking school and be one of the first 200 people to show open the bag of groceries. The guy cleansing is going to be there is a -- for the taste of home cooking school now guy -- do you do this -- right you do is live everywhere ego. And so. These things don't happen. Who there was an opening -- retreated because it's a bit more first early bird that's a perfect description of a typical -- school. It's so very economical tickets. Were going to be during the current troop or will it get away from the start. -- and you are being immaturity. It's always -- even if such and such for the approximately where they're. -- and so what you -- an embarrassment. I think the return people lapidus when it -- habitable or looked like such -- Am expecting those silly similarly terrorists they're sitting there are little distributed because so little little explosive Russians logos. Well little currently notebooks and we're gonna watch the show. Sound like -- or. And really does selling a lot of fun so they're good the rest easy you cook of the case of home cooking school they're they're pretty you -- everybody into right. You know there are reported that the desire for them cook so. You know if -- -- going to go -- -- from the true local worker in. It'll be making -- in the sea cucumbers or some crazy ingredient here. I want the potential material -- and these -- recipes that you're gonna look at our. We know -- are research that are currently starters earlier that you -- -- the 1000006 of these recipes -- -- The that they experience that the shuttle so that's great. Opportunity to experience that you're only solution for the -- is real isn't -- -- worried -- -- wanna -- make this week for over three. And so -- are pretty late to work. -- exposed to something recipes you know I think that will be demonstrating that step but it -- They'd be able to perform in the -- for the peace forward with the so first ever. It's can we talk again about if somebody is planning on bringing food to the case of home cooking school what sort of items are you looking for. So did the best thing I think that we struggle with the most of sources of protein for people that would be. Can't have been. Ten. Peanut butter is a great. Protein to get out what we needed something that we can -- to people in their living on the streets they're able to anticipate -- Opener be able to make it take it make it work for them for dinner. So -- -- and means. Vegetable. Fruit or anything like that really isn't a very valuable commodity test because that's something that that people need that's really healthy for them. Really great and if you are again won the first 200 people to -- but the taste of home cooking school with a bag of groceries to donate to the Salvation Army. You get special front row seat truly great tickets for the taste of home cooking school are available that taste of home PDX dot com for just fifteen dollars. And anything else -- you need to add -- to entice people out to the show. I just think it's going to be an takes an amazing opportunity to see a new kind of experience. And a fun opportunity to be a professional. Chelsea I have to tell you I'm not a great cook myself I wish I could be there and learned from him like I found the experience to gadgets and all the good and I think it's going to be a great time. To not only enjoy the evening have a good time but -- know that you're able to help other people on the process. That's exactly right and it's it's certainly seen the -- lucrative recipes. -- -- -- truly earned just you know being in the kitchen -- an era of.
